"You have a date?" Sunny repeated as she walked along with Alvida to Buggy's tent. "Here?"
"I do, she's from a nearby island." Alvida told her, arms linked with Sunny as she patted her on the arm. "I thought you'd like a distraction so I need your help picking an outfit."
"Oh, well, I'm not really good at that, I think that's more Buggy's thing." Sunny said as she followed along. "But um, I'm happy to help."
"Honey, you'll do fine." Alvida assured her as she led her to her room. "I'd like to practice my makeup on you, if that's alright. It makes it easier to see what I need to do."
"Um, sure?" Sunny just went along with it, not really understanding what Alvida wanted to do. She didn't like wearing makeup, her husband preferred it and often brought someone in to get Sunny ready when they had parties and he wanted to show her off. She appreciated Alvida asking for her help, however, as it was nice to do something different.
Alvida had her sit down on her bed before she went to pull out a few outfit choices. Admittedly, Sunny felt she didn't know Alvida that well, but when she saw the outfit choices coming out of the closet, floral dresses of different styles and patterns, she wondered what this girl was like if Alvida was wanting to change her style.
"Can you try this on for me?" Alvida asked as she held one up. "I'm not sure if it would look good on me."
Sunny took the dress and held it up with a frown. "It's not really your size, Alvida. It would be too big on you, but if you'd like, if you put it on I can see where the adjustments need to be made."
"No, no, I want to see if on you first." She insisted, directing Sunny to the privacy screen nearby to change. The blonde frowned at the captain but did as she was requested, wondering why Alvida preferred to see it on her than on herself. Sunny took a few minutes to remove her own clothes, her favorite overalls always on with a fitted crop top underneath. She had been working out in the garden again and found the overalls had the right amount of pockets.
When she was finally done, she stepped out, looking a little sheepish as she finished buttoning up the front of it. "I think it looks okay, but really, it would be better to see it on you."
Alvida looked her over, gesturing for her to spin around a few times before nodding in approval. "That one is perfect."
"Yea? Okay, I'll take it off-"
"No, no, keep it on." She insisted as she pulled Sunny over to her makeup vanity and making her sit down. "I need to figure out the makup first."
"We look completely different, I don't think it's going to look good on me, Alvida." Sunny said as she watched her pull out various shades of lipstick, blush, and eye shadow. "I don't know..."
"Come on, just a little?" Alvida asked as she picked out the lipstick first. "Pucker up, sweetheart."
Sunny sighed softly and let her play around with her face, trying out different colors and shades of makeup before deciding on a look. Alvida gave her a thumbs up before holding a small mirror out for her to look at herself. Sunny took it, frowning when she saw her reflection.
"Maybe? I still think it would be better on you." Sunny said as she reached for a tissue to start wiping it off, but Alvida stopped her.
"Let me play with your hair next."
"My hair?" Sunny frowned. "What's going on, Alvida? Why aren't you doing this to yourself?"
"I like having a model and Cabaji wasn't available." Alvida told her as Sunny took her pigtails out. Alvida grabbed her hairbrush, running it over her hair carefully to smooth it out. Sunny sighed and let her, making a face the entire time. At least Alvida was gentle, previous people weren't as kind, often pulling Sunny's hair to put it up just the right way or applying the makeup so heavily it irritated her skin. She barely noticed the makeup on her face and she couldn't help but pick up the small mirror again to look at herself.
"I just need to take this off before heading home." Sunny said. "I don't mind it, though. You did a good job. I can't wait to see it on yourself."
"Mmm, of course." The pirate captain agreed as she gave Sunny a look for. "Now, for hair styles..."
"Maybe a crown braid?" Sunny suggested, looking up at her. "I think it would look beautiful in your hair, and if you're going to go with this floral dress we could even stick some flowers in it."
"Flowers? That's perfect!"
"Yea?"
"Yes! I'll have Mohji get some when we're done in here." Alvida made quick work of Sunny's hair, gently twisting it into a braid around her head before securing it. She gently tugged a few wisps at her forehead, not wanting the style to look too formal. It needed to be comfortable and casual. "So, what do you think?"
"I think it looks wonderful." Sunny chuckled as she turned her head to look. "Are you able to do this on yourself or do you need help?"
"I'll be fine." Alvida said as she pulled Sunny to her feet. "Now I need you to come see the set up and make sure it's romantic."
"Oh, I'm sure it's fine-"
"No, no, I need another woman's opinion." She insisted as she led Sunny along to the main area of the tent. "If I asked the boys they'd either say it was fine or that I needed more. They're not helpful in the slightest."
"If you're certain..." Sunny frowned and followed along. She wondered how much Alvida liked this woman to need Sunny's help like this. It wasn't really her kind of thing. Whenever there had been parties, it fell to her husband to figure out everything as he wanted it to be perfect. She was just there as decoration. It was nice of Alvida to want her help but it was a little much. "I don't know much about this."
"Nonsense." She said as she stopped in the center ring. There was a little table with two chairs in the middle. Poles were erected around with a string of lights strung across them, providing a soft, gentle light for whoever sat there. A striped table cloth adorned the table while a candle in a bottle sat on top of it, wax dripping down the neck, collecting along it.
Alvida led Sunny over and pulled a chair out for her, beckoning her to sit. It was... weird, were they going to pretend they were on a date? As long as it wasn't Buggy, maybe Crocodile wouldn't be mad if he found out.
"Stay put." The pirate told Sunny before she headed off. "Let me get you a snack."
Sunny didn't know what to say, left alone and hoping Alvida's date didn't show up and get the wrong idea. It was a nice setup, reminding Sunny of a little cafe on the island she had apprenticed at, one she never got to go to before she was married.
Someone cleared their throat and she jumped out of her seat, heart in her throat when she saw Mihawk. She didn't know how to really explain this, but since Buggy wasn't there, it would be okay, right?
"You have twenty minutes." The swordsman told her as he stepped aside to show Buggy standing there. He was wearing the same outfit from the party when they danced. What was going on?
"I'm sorry, there's... a misunderstanding." Sunny said as she moved away from the table. "Alvida asked for my help with her date, and... and I'm sorry, I'll leave."
"No, Alvida tricked you to come here so the two of you can talk." Mihawk explained as Buggy approached her. "This isn't a date, just a small get together, understand?"
"R-Right..." Sunny wasn't sure about this. Buggy looked nervous, glancing back at the swordsman as he left, heading back to the entrance of the tent. She clasped her hands together, unsure what to do, before turning to Buggy. "I'm sorry."
"Sorry? For what?" He asked, scratching his cheek as he looked away. "The damn swordsman tricked me. Asked me to show him some fun tricks for training. Should have known it was a lie."
"Dressed like this?" Sunny gestured to his outfit. Buggy crossed his arms and huffed.
"He said to dress up or he wouldn't take me seriously!" Buggy shot back, frowning at her. "What about you? You... you look nice." He paused for a moment, still frowning as he looked her up and down. "Actually, you, uh, look beautiful."
"Oh, um, Alvida asked me to help her get ready for a date... which... I'm realizing now was her way of tricking me to dress like this." Sunny laughed nervously. "I feel ridiculous for falling for it."
"You're not ridiculous." Buggy told her. "You're... very sweet, okay? And I think you look more beautiful in this than Alvida would have anyway!"
"Oh, no, she would look lovely in it." Sunny smiled. "I guess... she planned this since she had several dresses ready."
Buggy took a step forward, looking her over again, before reaching up to fix the top button that had come undone. Sunny let him, breath caught in her throat, casting a nervous look behind him to make sure her husband wouldn't show up.
"Relax, he's busy." He assured her. "Mihawk said some birds got into office and disrupted all the papers in there. Croc's going to be busy taking care of that."
"Oh, well, I should go back and help-"
"But do you want to?"
Sunny hesitated and shook her head. Buggy grinned and clapped his hands together. "Wonderful! We can have our get together then!"
"That's what we're going to call this then?" She asked, smiling a bit. "Because it's not a date, it can't be."
"As Mihawk said, it's a get together." Buggy grinned. "No dating. We have twenty minutes." He wanted to say more, to help Sunny feel more comfortable, when the sound of an accordian caught their attention. One of his men entered the ring, looking nervously at Alvida who stood beside him with her arms crossed as she watched Buggy and Sunny.
"What's going on, Buggy?" Sunny asked.
"Beats me." He shrugged before turning his attention back to her. "Look, do you want to dance? I think that's the best idea right now, y'know, because we missed out on several songs back at that party."
Sunny hesitated but Buggy was already taking her by the hand, placing one on his shoulder, putting his hand on her hip, and taking her hand in his before he started to spin her around. She was caught off guard, stumbling into him before he steadied her. She turned red, letting him take the lead as he spun her around to the music, dipping her, pulling her back up, causing her to laugh.
She was started to relax, smiling at him as the music changed to something faster, more beats, and Buggy kept up with it, holding Sunny closer, squeezing her hand gently.
And she allowed it, even as the music slowed down, looking up at him. It was hard right to not kiss him, he seemed to think the same, because she saw him started to lean down only to stop himself after a moment. He sighed and pulled back but Sunny just gave his hand a squeeze again.
"Thank you."
Buggy shrugged, pulling his hand from her waist but holding onto her hand. "So, uh, you in love with me yet?"
"What?" Sunny asked. He ran his thumb over her knuckles gently, glanced over at her.
"You told me the other day that if we had one more dance you might have fallen in love with me." Buggy said as he started to grin. "Well, we just had several more dances, so I need to know."
"Oh." Sunny felt her face grow hot and she glanced over at Alvida. The pirate just gave her an encouraging thumbs up so Sunny looked back at Buggy. "I... maybe. Slowly, I suppose, but I need you to be patient."
"Patient? Really?" He huffed. Sunny smiled and reached up to put her hand on his face, running her fingers over his stubble. He caught her hand and held it against her face. "Is this okay?"
"It's not kissing." She chuckled. "I think it's okay."

There's no race, no ending in sight
r rating. title comes from "two of us on the run" by lucius
(I had to write this one several times before I was happy with it. The next chapter will be fun. This fic will end happy! Also I enjoy how everyone calls Sunny something different yet Buggy is the only one to actually call her Sunny. Croc calls her darling, Mihawk used Miss Sunny, and Alvida is sweetheart and honey. It's kinda cute.)

"He's miserable." Alvida sighed as she freshened Mihawk's glass before helping herself to a piece of fruit. "Mopes all day, his makeup is sloppy, clothes are wrinkled. I think something needs to be done."
"She's not any better." Mihawk replied as he leaned back in his seat. "I don't know what was said between her and Crocodile but Miss Sunny isn't her usual self."
The two were sitting under large umbrellas near Mihawk's home, enjoying fruits and cheeses paired with wine. It was something to do in between meetings and other work that had to be done. They would talk about what was going on on the island, any sort of drama to watch out for, though currently Alvida's favorite topic to talk about was the sad clown and his foolish attempt at talking to Crocodile.
"It's too bad they can't be together. They're so cute when they talk about each other." Alvida sighed. "I had Sunny over again last night. When she wasn't crying over her marriage she was absolutely gushing about Buggy and his "pretty hair"." She used air quotes and all, rolling her eyes. "I'd rather they just kiss already and be done with it."
"Miss Sunny won't. She takes the marriage vows seriously." The swordsman said as he helped himself to a piece of cheese with blueberries in it. It was tart but tasty. "Even if she is miserable she won't act on her feelings." When Alvida gave him a side eye, sipping her wine, he continued, "She told me everything yesterday in the garden even though I didn't ask."
"Did you give her any advice?"
"What advice is there to give? We both know who she's married to and what her husband is like." Mihawk replied, raising his glass up. "Unless Crocodile ends the marriage she's stuck with him."
Alvida leaned back in her seat. "Do you think he would end the marriage?"
"He may have if Buggy hadn't acted like an idiot, now he'll keep her around to spite him." He told her with a sigh. "And Miss Sunny won't do anything, she'll stay miserable. She will keep playing the role of wife for him even if she hates him."
"That poor thing." She shook her head before taking a sip of her wine. "Too bad there's nothing we can do."
"You're right, there's nothing I can do since I work with both of them." Mihawk hummed as he took a sip. "Pity."
Alvida glanced over at him, eye row raised as she lowered her glass. "I suppose you're right, there is nothing you can do in this situation. Your hands are tied." She reached for a piece of mango and leaned back. "I, on the other hand..."
~
Sunny took over pulling the weeds in the garden while Mihawk watered. She nearly drowned several of their plots already by being distracted so he no longer trusted her. She said nothing to him, not sure what to even say as she yanked on the weeds and tossed them over her shoulder.
"Hey."
She looked up to see Buggy standing at the gate to the garden but he wasn't looking at her. His eyes were on Mihawk. The injuries Crocodile inflicted on him a week ago had healed, but his refusal to look at Sunny hurt.
"Croc said there was a meeting. Told me to grab you if you're done playing in the dirt." Buggy said, gripping the top of the gate as he kept his eyes on the swordsman. Sunny eventually looked away, turning her attention back to the weeds. There was no point in talking to him.
"I completely forgot." The swordsman sighed as he walked over to the gate, shoving the watering can into Buggy's arms. "Finish up for me while I freshen up and don't over water them or else."
Buggy huffed in annoyance, glaring at Mihawk as he walked off. He looked back at Sunny who was focused on her own task before he stomped over to where the soil was still dry, dumping the water onto it.
"Don't drown them." Sunny said, glancing over at him. "I kept doing it on accident which is why I'm on weed duty."
"Yea?" Buggy snorted. "It can't be that hard to water some damn plants."
"Mihawk will know which ones you watered so if they don't make it..." She trailed off and went back to her task. Buggy looked in the direction Mihawk went, wondering if he was going to suddenly show back up and fight him over talking to her. He rolled his eyes before going to refill the watering can back up.
"So, how's life?" Buggy asked as he filled it to the top before going to the next spot. Sunny sat up and looked over at him.
"It's life. You?" She sighed. "Look, I'm sorry for what he did to you."
"What, that? Please, babe, I've had way worse." He chuckled as he moved to a spot near her. "He just knocked me around a bit, it was nothing."
"Okay." She sat back and looked up at him. "Did you really barge in there and tell him you were in love with me?"
"Yep."
"Why did you do something so stupid?"
"Never said I was smart." Buggy shrugged as he dripped the watering can near her, splashing its contents onto her hand. She jerked away and stuck her tongue out at him. "Woops!"
"Idiot." She muttered, smiling a bit as she wiped her hand on her pants.
"Yea, so, how are you? How's he treating you?"
"Same as before." She shrugged. "I told him how I felt about him."
"And how did that go?" He asked, moving to another area. "You look like you still have all your limbs."
"Well, he is keeping his promise to not hurt me." Sunny told him as she watched him. "Now he just mocks me because I said I liked you."
Buggy looked over at her in surprise. "Oh?"
"And that I want to kiss you." She pointed to another spot. "Over there next, Buggy."
He didn't move, looking down at her with a now smug expression. "You *want* to kiss me? Really?" He left his hand with the watering can and crouched down beside her with a grin. "We could kiss now."
"No, we can't, I'm married." Sunny reminded him as she gently pushed him back. "I made a vow."
"Against your will!" He exclaimed. "Did you ever want to marry him?!"
"No, but I had no choice, okay?" She shot back. "It wouldn't be right to kiss you while I'm still married to him!"
"But you don't love him!"
"I don't love you either!"
He stood up suddenly and went to grab the watering can. She swore softly and got up as well, stumbling through the soft ground until she grabbed his wrist.
"Buggy, let me finish." She insisted as he turned to look at her. She hated how he was looking at her, the hurt in his eyes while he was trying to force himself to smile, trying to appear more amused by her words. "I... Would like to fall in love with you, okay, but I can't in my situation."
"Say no more, babe." He chuckled as he pulled himself out of her grip. "We know it can't happen, so maybe it's stupid for me to keep trying."
She hesitated, reaching for his hand again. He eyed it cautiously before looking around, making sure they were still alone before he allowed her to take it. She gave his hand a squeeze, smiling at him. "Just shut up for a second, clown."
"Excuse me?" He tried to look offended but she giggled, holding onto his hand.
"I feel if we had one more dance that night I would have fallen in love completely, you know, but instead we had to stop." She said as she smiled. "I wish things were different, you know, because I think I'd be happy with you."
"Really?"
"Really, Buggy."
"So then let's-"
"Buggy." Mihawk was back. Buggy cursed him while Sunny squeezed his hand again before letting go. Mihawk pretended not to notice. "Did you finish watering the plants?"
"Yes! I finished watering your stupid plants!" He fussed as he pushed the watering can into Sunny's arms. "Your dumb plants are no longer thirsty 'cause I gave them lots of water!"
The swordsman narrowed his eyes. "You better not have over watered them."
"Over watering is the best so you don't have to do it again tomorrow, okay?!" Buggy huffed as he stomped over to him. "Let's go to that stupid meeting already! Can't keep him waiting, you know!"
Mihawk looked back at Sunny. "Did he over water them?"
"A little." Sunny smiled. "I kept an eye on him."
"If any of these die, it's his fault." Mihawk muttered as he opened the gate for Buggy and let him out. "We will see you in a few hours, Miss Sunny."
"Have fun, you two." Sunny waved at them as they left before she finished up the task. Hopefully the plants would be okay.

A few days after Girl's Night, Sunny was bringing her husband his lunch. She hadn't seen him all morning, which was fine by her but often he made at least one appearance throughout the day. She knocked on the door of his office, listening for him to bid her entrance, but she instead heard a cry of pain.
She didn't wait, throwing the door open and rushing into his office.
Buggy was there, head swinging from Crocodile's hook as his body lay crumpled on the floor. This wasn't the first time Sunny had seen it, but to hear the pain he had been in startled her. Buggy looked at her, face bloody and bruised again, and she just stood by the door in shock.
"The clown told me he was in love with you." Crocodile told her as he tossed Buggy's head aside. It rolled away, still crying in pain, as Sunny took a few steps into the office. "What do you say to that, darling?"
"I... don't know why he'd do something so foolish." Sunny said as she set the tray of food down, watching Buggy as his head returned to his body. "That was dumb."
"See, clown?" Crocodile chuckled as he grabbed her by the hand, pulling her into his lap. "I should double your debt for that."
"You'd never get it back." Sunny said as she looked up at her husband. "He wouldn't be able to pay."
"Are you defending him, my darling?" He asked as Buggy started to sit up, holding his hand to his nose as it bled. "Don't tell me you like him."
"He's a good dancer." She shrugged. "You didn't dance with me at the party and made him do it. How could I not like him when he was so nice to me?"
"C-Can I leave?" Buggy whined; Crocodile kept his attention on Sunny while pointing the hook in Buggy's direction. She wouldn't look at him, keeping her attention on her husband. She couldn't look at Buggy. If she did she was afraid she would start crying for him, feeling guilty he was injured because of her.
"Stay away from her." Crocodile warned him. "Do not talk to her, look at her, or even think about her, clown. Do you understand?"
Buggy looked at Sunny; she wouldn't look at him. He hated this. He didn't want it to be like this, he wanted to be with her, but this was impossible. There was no way to fight for her and win.
"I-I understand." He did but he didn't want to, he wanted to keep seeing her, even if it was just to see her smile at him and never said a word. It wasn't fair.
"Get the hell out of here."
Buggy got up and left at the command, only to look back to see Crocodile pull Sunny to him for a kiss. She allowed it, putting her arms around him, running her fingers through his hair. Why, why, why did this have to happen? Why did Buggy have to fall in love with her and tell her husband? Why did he think Crocodile would be understanding and show him mercy?
He stormed out, flinching at the pain in his side where Crocodile had kicked him earlier. He was going to bruise from that. Everything hurt and the only medicine he wanted was the alcohol Alvida had stashed in her room.
~
"I think you were too harsh on him." Sunny said as she laid curled up next to Crocodile. He was on his back, hook gone with his left arm behind his head and his right arm holding Sunny to him, letting his hand stroke her arm gently. "He's an idiot."
"Then why did he barge into my office to tell me he loved you?" He asked. Sunny shrugged, running her hand over his chest slowly, tracing faded, lingering scars along his skin. He shuddered when she did that. "He's lucky you came in when you did. I was about to gut him."
"Ugh, it'd get all over your shoes." She reminded him as she draped her arm over him. "I'm glad you didn't."
"Hm." His hand stopped and he looked down at her. "What are your feelings for the clown?"
Sunny sighed and closed her eyes. "You want to ask me that after fucking me? I don't want to think of him."
Crocodile moved on top of her, pulling one of her legs up to rest over his thigh. She swallowed heavily and looked up at him, biting her lip gently as he looked her over. Her body was covered in his bites, leaving red, angry marks all over her. The ones on her neck and throat were the worse, he almost broke the skin on one spot. He slid his hand up her thigh, watching her for a reaction, but she just looked up at him, waiting for his next move.
"Sunny, my darling, let me ask you something and be honest with me." He said, taking in how she shivered under his touch. Sunny nodded, closing her eyes as she moved her legs further apart for him.
"Ask away." She said, wondering what he was about to ask, hoping it wasn't about Buggy again. She had tried her hardest not to think about him while Crocodile was on top of her, making her moan and cry for him, nails scratching his back as he fucked her through multiple orgasms.
"Are you in love with the clown?"
Sunny's eyes shot open and she stared up at her husband in shock. He actually asked her that while naked and on top of her as she spread her legs for him. She didn't know what to say, shock clearly written on her face as her brain raced through possible answers to give him.
"I-I- where is that coming from?" She stammered. "Why are you asking me that?"
"As you say, he's a good dancer." Crocodile told her as he moved his hand to her stomach, sliding it up her body slowly. "Now answer me."
Would it be better to lie or tell the truth? Either way, someone would be hurt. Why should she continue pretending like everything was okay for them? It never was. She had never been happy in this marriage. This was her out, as awkward of a position she was currently in, she had to say something even if it ended in her death.
"I'm not in love with you." She told him. "Ever. I was never in love with you, Crocodile, and I don't think that's going to change after twenty years."
He looked down at her, an unreadable expression on his face until he started to laugh. That was not the reaction Sunny expected.
"I've known that." He chuckled as leaned in close to her. "But that's not what I asked, darling. I asked if you were in love with that clown."
Sunny huffed and pushed him back just enough so she could sit up. "Why would it matter how I feel about someone else? I'm married to you."
"And? I asked you a question and I want an answer." He said as he loomed over her, pulling her back under him with little difficulty. Sunny huffed softly, crossing her arms as she looked up at him.
"Fine. I like him." She told him. "I like him enough that I want to kiss him, Crocodile, but I won't. You can trust that I won't because when I married you I promised to stay loyal even if I was unhappy, and I am not about to break that over some pathetic clown."
"That so?" He reached up to stroke her cheek as she nodded. "Such a sweet, lovely little wife I have. You've always been so good to me, haven't you?" He leaned down to kiss her, enjoying her gasp, how she put her arms around him to pull him down closer. He broke the kiss, biting her bottom lip gently before smirking. "I'm lucky to have you, aren't I?"
Sunny couldn't stop herself from glaring at him. She hated this, hated him even. He was mocking her, enjoying her misery as he asked her a simple question and she told him the truth. She wanted nothing more than to leave, to not deal with him or Buggy but to go elsewhere, away from all this nonsense with pirates.
Crocodile chuckled as he pulled away from her. "Get yourself cleaned up. Go play in your garden with Hawkeyes if you want. I'll see you at dinner."
He got out of bed and went to collect their clothes, placing hers on the bed before he started to get dressed, putting his hook on last. Sunny watched him, waiting until he was gone before she started crying.

What is your dream job? To heck with money and qualifications - the sky's the limit here ✨
AND where do YOU get inspiration for your stories? 🩷🩷
Ok absolute dream job would be living on the grounds of an old cemetery to be in charge of the upkeep. I love going to old cemeteries (the oldest headstones in my state tend to be about mid 1800s) and would love to maintain one!
And my inspirations... My brain doesn't stop. Ever. I just sit around and something comes to me so I think about it, make a post, and then from there start writing it out. An example would be the SunnyxCroc/SunnyxBuggy fic because previously I've mentioned Sunny and Crocodile getting together and how I would never do that, and yet it kept coming back so I decided to see how it played out and makes me glad it's really SunnyxBuggy. She needs the clown. 😭

twenty years ago
"I'm sorry, what?" The nineteen year old looked confused by the demand. Sunny had only been at the job for five years, she still had so much to learn, but this customer came in, one she had seen frequently in the last year, making adjustments to their clothes when it didn't feel right in the arms, the chest, hips, and length.
"I said marry me, shop girl." The cigar smoke was awful, lingering in the air as it dissipated. He was grinning at her.
"M-Mister Crocodile, I can't. I'm only half way through my apprenticeship and... and we don't know each other very well." Sunny tried to reason with him. Why would he want to marry her? "Besides, um, I'm not... ready for marriage."
He chuckled, reaching across the counter to touch her cheek gently; she shuddered, his touch was dry and coarse, like sandpaper against her skin. "It's not in your best interest to say no to me, girl, not when I can show you everything in the world, all the riches you could ever want, the prettiest clothes you could ever wear."
"I don't-"
"Saying no to me means you care little for your friends and family, you know. It won't be hard to destroy their livelihoods in an instant." He continued, tilting her head to look up at him. He was so much taller than her, larger even, that she was scared. Was he threatening Miss Pins and her parents? Why? Why did he want her out of countless others?
"But-"
"Just say yes."
Sunny's eyes widened. She didn't know or understand what this man could be capable of but she feared him. She couldn't risk her family being hurt or her boss. She didn't want to die either, not yet.
"Promise?" She asked as he studied her face, raising an eyebrow at her question. "Promise... you won't hurt me o-or my family. And... and I'll marry you."
His face split into a grin. "Good girl. I'll make sure you're happy."
~
Sunny didn't understand where they were. A man taller than her husband greeted them as they arrived on a new island, calling him "Croc-boy" which Sunny found kind of funny. They'd been married three months now and while he would call her darling, she hadn't thought of a pet name for him yet. Nothing seemed to work for him.
"Who's this sweet young thing?" The man asked Crocodile, giving Sunny a look over. She stood beside her husband, trying not to stare up at either of them. She felt so small beside them even without the height difference.
"My wife." Crocodile said as the three started walking along. "I decided to get married before coming to you."
"Hello! I'm Sunny." She said, not wanting to be rude. "I, um, like your outfit."
The outfit being a one piece leotard with very little front, showing off his chest and stomach. Despite working with clothing, Sunny wasn't quite used to seeing someone that exposed but she shook it off. Her parents and boss always taught her not to judge someone's clothes or how they presented themselves.
"She's cute." He chuckled. "My dear, I am Emporio Ivankov, but you can call me Iva if you please." He didn't hesitate in pulling Sunny away from her husband, having her walk beside her with Crocodile behind. "So, he's finally settling down. I hope he's treating you well."
"He... is." She said, glancing back at him. "Um, he's kind to me. I appreciate it." She looked back up at Iva. "Why are we here?"
"Oh, he didn't tell you?" Iva hummed softly. "Figures he wouldn't, but won't worry about it. You'll only be here a few weeks and then you can continue on your way."
~
A few weeks of Sunny staying by Crocodile, making sure he ate while checking his bandages with Iva. The marks on the side of his body looked fine, they healed quickly, but the ones on his chest would take longer, according to Iva. He couldn't use his abilities to take care of that.
Sunny didn't ask questions at first. Her husband wouldn't answer them anyway, but when she was making lunch for him, she finally had to ask Iva.
"I don't understand what you did or what happened."
"Oh, honey, your husband just wanted to be himself, that's all." Iva told her as Sunny put the bowl of soup on a tray. He looked her over again, a grin on his large face. "You really don't know your husband, do you?"
"No, not really." Sunny sighed. "I don't know if I even want to."
~
Sunny only saw her husband naked once before his visit with Iva. It was the only time he seemed uncomfortable around her, his unwanted body exposed to her. She was kind, not saying anything as she kissed him, unsure of what to do, but she told him she thought he looked so handsome, that his body was beautiful, being mindful where she touched him. She meant it. Sunny never wanted someone to feel uncomfortable around her.
After the surgery, however, he didn't have any problems with nudity around her. He seemed happier, more relaxed when he undressed around her, smirking at the way she stared at him as her cheeks reddened.
He was gentle with her the first time, knowing he was much larger than her, not wanting to hurt her or make it a horrible experience. It was a uncomfortable for Sunny but only because she didn't now what she needed to do for him. He insisted she just needed to let him do everything and that she just needed to enjoy herself.
~
She was allowed to visit her parents a few times. It was awkward introducing her husband to them. He really didn't care to meet them but he put up a front of loving husband, gifting them jewels, spices, and other things from around the world.
Her parents weren't stupid but Sunny insisted she was fine and that she was happy with him. He took good care of her and loved her, never raised his voice at her or threatened to hurt her. Everything was fine.
~
She didn't like Alabasta. It was too hot, dry, and she hated spending most of her time at home. Sometimes her husband would bring her to his casino, and sometimes she'd put on different clothes and sneak out to walk around the town but it wasn't often.
When that boy in the straw hat showed up and defeated her husband, allowing him to be arrested by the Marines, she finally felt free, even after interrogation after interrogation, she insisted she knew nothing, that she thought her husband just ran a casino and everything, she had no understanding of what he had been up to or what Baroque Works even was.
Which was a lie, Sunny knew more than others thought. She had listened in on some of his conversations when she'd bring him lunch and he'd hold her in his lap, giving her a kiss on the cheek while having a meeting over a transponder snail or in front of others. They didn't make any comments about his wife. They knew better.
~
Her freedom didn't last long. He managed to track her down in a little village far from Impel Down. She wasn't sure how he did, but seeing him again after time apart was heartbreaking. She didn't want to return to him but he maintained his original threat when they got married: he would never hurt her but the same couldn't be said for her family.
~
"I'm sorry, a clown owns you money?" Sunny thought that was the funniest sounding sentence to her and she snorted. "Why did you loan him money in the first place?"
"There was promise of repayment." Her husband replied, stubbing out his cigar on his plate. She had made him breakfast, one of the few things she enjoyed doing for him. She took a sip of her coffee and frowned.
"Huh." She grinned. "Good luck getting it back. Maybe he spent it all on peanuts for an elephant or something."
"I don't see how this is amusing, darling."
"It's not, really, but the idea of a clown owing you money is funny to me." She shrugged. "Have you talked to him about getting it back?"
"Not yet." He sighed. Sunny nodded and set her coffee cup down, sitting up in her seat.
"Can I go talk to him?"
Crocodile looked at her, raising an eyebrow. "Why would you want to?"
"Something to do." She shrugged again. "I'll talk to him and see if we can come up with an agreement about paying you back in a timely fashion, how does that sound?"
"We'll talk about after lunch." He said as he got up. "I have things to tend to."
