to be honest, you should have expected this. i mean, what did you think? that after all this time - that he'd come back and tell you the words you longed to hear? that you were all that he needed, and that he was wrong about everything.
yes, you indulged yourself in daydreams like that, images of oikawa tooru: teary eyed with dark circles lining his eyes, rushing up to your front door, holding your hands close to his chest as he mumbled out an apology.
maybe that was wrong, but could they really blame you? you spent the last few years of your highschool life supporting the man in every way you could, not knowing that the relationship helped you too.
you first met him as you walked down the school campus at an hour far later than you'd like to admit. the sky was dark with the stars peppering the night, as you recited the points you wrote down in your paper.
"paleomagnetism is a field of study where-", you mumbled, catching yourself as you tripped on a rock. you were about to continue your way going through the points for your presentation before you heard the thumping of something.
you looked up to see the volleyball court, the windows displaying you a silhouette of a tall boy, hitting a ball repeatedly. you were sure that no one should be out at school at 1 am (apart from you of course.)
you gripped the cold metal doors, a small 'maybe you should just leave him here' whispering out to you in the back of your head before opening the door.
"uh, i think you should really go home now?" you said uncomfortably as the boy, oikawa tooru, whipped his head to face you, his sneer quickly replaced by a forced smile. "the security's going to be doing his rounds soon, and i was almost caught last week." your voice echoed in the empty court, bringing goosebumps to your skin. "yeah? what you were you doing last week?" he said, throwing the ball to the side of the court as he rubbed the collar of his large shirt on his face, wiping the sweat away. "uh, it doesn't matter," you said quickly. "school stuff, anywho, we should be going right now."
a few minutes later, you and oikawa were walking down the streets in silence. to be completely honest, you never expected to see oikawa tooru practising late in night, or well, early in the morning. you'd always heard of him as a star player, someone who always seemed to have everything in control. sure, you'd never interacted with him much, or anyone in any sports team really, so what did you know? but the thought of the star volleyball player working hours after everyone else brought some sort of solace to the student who was working hours after school everyday for their research paper.
that was how the relationship started. it wasn't really a proper friendship. proper friends didn't go for days without talking to each other and then have conversations about the world and how everyone was living out someone else's desired life. at least you think they didn't. maybe that's what made it so easy. it was much more easier to tell a stranger about your secrets than it was to tell someone you knew anyway.
so while you talked to him about your dilemmas of choosing two extremely different fields of studies, he told you about plays he'd been working on. he never told you outright about his worries or feelings of course, but after a while, you seemed to pick up on the small details. the way his eyes didn't scrunch up when he smiled, or when the ends of his sentences were mumbled out. that was when you told him more about yourself. of all the stupid little things you've done, bringing back a little spark in his eyes.
you weren't really sure when that little fire decided to make its way into your heart, but as soon as you noticed, it made everything so much better and worse at the same time.
you were always left with tingles when he came a little too close, your breath hitching. it seemed wonderful really, you loved the excitement it brought you until you saw him with someone else, pressing a chaste kiss to their lips. your heart sunk, the smile on your face melting away.
maybe that should've helped you move on, but for some reason, you never seemed to. you continued your life as always (which was filled with studying for the most part, to be honest), watching the boy you liked wrap his arms around someone else. it definitely should've stopped once you left school and entered university.
it did- somewhat. you were occupied with school, internships, assignments, and your crumbling social life. it definitely wasn't as bad as it was before, but you always caught yourself drifting off to him, sighing as the memory passed. it wasn't long before you heard he'd gone to become a professional volleyball player. and you were happy for him, you really were. you could tell that it was more than a mere sport for him.
and so when you were faced with the familiar face in the street, dressed in a blazer as you picked up a drink before your important meeting, you smiled slightly. the anger and resentment from all those years were long gone, replaced by a slight twinge that you couldn't really understand. but it didn't really matter anyway.
"oh- uh hello y/n," oikawa whispered. his voice changed, it was deeper, a little less joyful than you remembered. or maybe he was calmer than he used to be. "hi tooru. it's been a while, hasn't it?"

ANNOUNCEMENT !
Tumblr media
tldr: this blog is now archived!
yes, i'm archiving this blog bc i just don't feel like writing anymore. i think i've fell out of love with writing fanfic and i just don't feel as motivated to write anymore? writing feels like a chore instead of a fun activity to release stress.
i will be trying to finish the collabs i've signed up for, but no promises!
i loved writing here, and loved interacting with you all! i've just been feeling a little drained.
but, dw y'all (🤡) i still have my spam/ personal @ri-takes.
