Abandoned since the early 1950s, the North Shore Branch ROW on Staten Island most recently was proposed to be reactivated as a bus rapid transit corridor, speeding up many bus routes throughout the island as they route towards St. George. Much of the ROW has receded into the harbor or become reforested, but the viaduct section (built as part of a costly grade crossing elimination project) remains mostly intact. The westernmost section is active today as a freight railroad transporting residential waste to the mainland. Trains travel across the Arthur Kill Vertical Lift Bridge (the only rail connection from SI). The original Arthur Kill Bridge was the only bridge connecting to Staten Island when it was built. #statenisland #northshorebranch #statenislandrailway #railroad #busrapidtransit #abandonedinfrastructure #nyc #traintracks #history #infrastructure #cities #northshore #urbanplanning #transportation  https://www.instagram.com/p/CbsURe5ONTH/?utm_medium=tumblr

When snow accumulates, the MTA gets to work clearing platforms, stairs, tracks, and especially switches (in many spots, "heat" is turned on to keep them from icing up). Snow isn't supposed to be shoveled to the street from elevated stations, and snow removal along open cut lines can be especially challenging (as well as on elevated lines with concrete trackbeds and nowhere for snow to fall below). There is even a need for snow removal underground when snow makes its way through the grates, and ice can create problems in tunnels too. Many trains are stored underground in case operations at aboveground yards become challenging, which means some express service sometimes gets canceled (if trains are stored on express tracks) and crews need extra time to report. Trains operate more slowly too, since it can take longer to brake on icy rails. There are many impacts and complexities with running a 24/7 railroad during inclement weather. #nycsubway #subway #metro #underground #mta #nyctransit #nyc #snow #ice #winter #snowstorm #nycsnow #snownyc #noreaster #weather #snowday #winterwonderland #snowremoval #train #trains #trainstation #railroad #trainspotter #publictransport #publictransit #publictransportation #cities #infrastructure #railfan #foamer  https://www.instagram.com/p/CZXcJZTOL2L/?utm_medium=tumblr

The BMT subway underneath Flatbush Avenue is arguably one of the most complex sections in the entire city, with so much interlining -- to 6th Avenue and Broadway (via bridge and tunnel) in Manhattan (and potential for Nassau Street Line service, but only via the Montague Tunnel and not the Manhattan Bridge since the Chrystie Connection), and to 4th Avenue and the Brighton Line in Brooklyn. All this merging, to and from local and express tracks, can be quite challenging, especially during incidents when multiple lines can quickly become impacted and delays can cascade throughout the network. The NYC subway is unique with so much interlining and express/local service, 24/7. The BMT and IRT also share Flatbush Avenue towards Grand Army Plaza, one of the few locations in the city with 6 revenue tracks (not yards) underneath a single street heading the same direction.  #nycsubway #mta #nyctransit #subway #metro #underground #dekalb #Brooklyn #history #nyc #urbanhistory #urbanexploring #infrastructure #cities #trains #tunnels #secrets  #urbanplanning #urbandesign #design #transit #publictransit #publictransport #civilengineering #engineering #subwaystation #flatbushavenue #bmt #irt https://www.instagram.com/p/CZFTt9rOKLc/?utm_medium=tumblr

The abandoned BMT Myrtle Avenue Station underneath Flatbush Avenue was taken out of service in 1956 for track capacity improvements. Only the northbound platform partly remains, as the southbound platform was demolished for construction of a flying junction (so tracks could be grade separated). The station was below the BMT Myrtle Elevated Line (demolished in 1969), and now features Masstransiscope, which consists of 228 panels creating a moving image for passengers looking out the train window. Containerization, begun in the 1950s, quickly transformed the industrial waterfronts of the region. All along the Hudson River, East River, and most of the New York Bay, piers and docks were omnipresent. Manhattan, Brooklyn, Queens, Jersey City, Hoboken, Staten Island, and elsewhere had busy and vibrant industrial waterfronts (as well as more ferry service, prior to the construction of bridges and tunnels). New intermodal, standardized containers, which did not require loading and unloading, and could be more seamlessly shipped via ship, rail, and truck, required fewer workers and larger container facilities. Today, the NY Cruise Terminal is the only remaining Manhattan location for large ships (other cruise terminals are in Brooklyn and Bayonne); the US Army Corps of Engineers forced the City to blast through Manhattan schist, rather than lengthen piers further into the Hudson River (Chelsea Piers, where the Titanic was supposed to dock, was also built over dug-up landfill which had once extended Manhattan to 13th Avenue).   #portnewarkelizabeth #marineterminal #portnewark #portelizabeth #newarknj #elizabethnj #nj #ny #panynj #nyc #nyharbor #containerterminal #port #dock #pier #freight #industry #waterfront #supplychain #bayonnebridge #panamax #expressrail #conrail #csx #ns #railroad #containerization #intermodal #shipping  https://www.instagram.com/regionnyc/p/CYAVqdwsrLg/?utm_medium=tumblr

Originally a wetland, Newark Bay as well as the Arthur Kill and Kill van Kull were massively dredged and turned into an industrial waterway. There were similar plans for Jamaica Bay in Queens, mostly now a NPS wildlife refuge except for JFK Airport, to be the main shipping facility for the metropolitan region. But without a freight railroad tunnel underneath the harbor, the facility made more sense in NJ, connected with ease to the national freight railroad network and not as isolated as Long Island.  #portnewarkelizabeth #marineterminal #portnewark #portelizabeth #newarknj #elizabethnj #nj #ny #panynj #nyc #nyharbor #containerterminal #port #dock #pier #freight #industry #waterfront #supplychain #bayonnebridge #panamax #expressrail #conrail #csx #ns #railroad #containerization #intermodal #shipping  https://www.instagram.com/p/CYAU_nlOtJT/?utm_medium=tumblr

Port Newark-Elizabeth Marine Terminal is the largest container port in the eastern US. The largest of all the Port Authority of NY and NJ's container terminals, this facility in Newark Bay (in Newark and Elizabeth NJ) is conveniently located near Newark Airport, the NJ Turnpike, Northeast Corridor, and many freight railroad lines. If you live in the Eastern US, it's very likely your goods arrived here.  #portnewarkelizabeth #marineterminal #portnewark #portelizabeth #newarknj #elizabethnj #nj #ny #panynj #nyc #nyharbor #containerterminal #port #dock #pier #freight #industry #waterfront #supplychain #bayonnebridge #panamax #expressrail #conrail #csx #ns #railroad #containerization #intermodal #shipping  https://www.instagram.com/p/CYAT_LOOAdL/?utm_medium=tumblr

It has been more than 55 years since the Panorama was first unveiled at the 1964 World's Fair in Queens. The City's built environment was vastly changed from the 55 years prior (in ~1910). But today, there is actually less railroad infrastructure than there was after WW2 and the last major bridges and tunnels began construction by the 1960s. 55 years from now in ~2075, will the City still basically have the same transport infrastructure, or will it be unrecognizable (in a good way) to someone from the present? Will we at least have a completed Second Avenue Subway?  #nyc #queens #queensmuseum #panorama #cities #infrastructure #governance #buildbackbetter #politics #urbanplanning #nimby #yimby #transportplanning #transportationplanning #publictransit #publictransportation #history #urbanhistory #development #urbandevelopment #subway #bridges #tunnels #roads #streets #worldsfair #construction #engineering #design #architecture  https://www.instagram.com/regionnyc/p/CXl8BlOO8kY/?utm_medium=tumblr

(2/2) Other R211 features include wider doors for shorter dwell times, WiFi, USB outlets, digital screens and displays (for station-specific ads/announcements), flip seats for customers using wheelchairs, and many other technical improvements. (1/2) R211s are coming before you know it! The most exciting feature would arguably be, for some train consists, open-gangways (for more capacity), which are already quite common in many other countries (including Canada). Gone would be the days when you knew you had to be at the back of the train for your exit, but caught the train at the front, and couldn't walk through the entire moving train easily. Maintaining the fleet with this new feature would be a new operational challenge to be figured out. #nycsubway #subwaycar #subwaytrain #underground #metro #subway #train #trains #trainspotter #tech #technology #emu #r211 #cities #infrastructure #history #urbanhistory #kawasaki #ntt #stainlesssteel #levelentry #traction #acceleration #deceleration #gauge #cbtc #publictransit #publictransport #urbanplanning #transportationplanning https://www.instagram.com/p/CXO-cEBueRO/?utm_medium=tumblr

There are two North River Tunnels (shown) between NJ and NY Penn Station, but four East River Tunnels between NYP and Queens. Four tunnels were originally built between NYP and Queens (unlike the 2 between NYP and NJ) because planners envisioned more commuter rail service coming from Long Island. The LIRR had been bought by the PRR and began operating directly to Manhattan instead of to ferries across the East River, but the PRR thought most of their own commuter rail (non-intercity) service would continue to terminate in Jersey City at the now-demolished Exchange Place Terminal (customers would then take ferries or today's PATH train to NYC). The PRR also massively expanded Sunnyside Yard in Queens, so many non-revenue trains also needed to use the 4 East River Tunnels for servicing and deadheading. (There was no West Side Yard for the LIRR either, as that yard was a NY Central yard later connected to today's High Line). The Gateway Program would allow for 4 tracks here, meaning more speed (reliability and frequency). #ny #NJ #amtrak #usdot #njt #njtransit #panynj #gateway #northeastcorridor #northriver #hudsonriver #pennsylvaniarailroad #pennstation #nyp #nypennstation #trains #train #railroad #tunnel #tunnels #railroadphotography #trainspotter #regionalrail #commuterrail #traintracks #history #urbanhistory #infrastructure #cities #buildbackbetter  https://www.instagram.com/p/CW6DTWbr4Fv/?utm_medium=tumblr

The Gateway Program would double capacity along the most congested 10-mile section of the Northeast Corridor, including rehabilitating the two North River (the Dutch name for the Hudson River) Tunnels from NJ to NY Penn Station, and building new tunnels as well. Other improvements include bridge replacements and the Bergen Loop at Secaucus Junction, allowing for more direct NJT service to NYP. #ny #NJ #amtrak #usdot #njt #njtransit #panynj #gateway #northeastcorridor #northriver #hudsonriver #pennsylvaniarailroad #pennstation #nyp #nypennstation #trains #train #railroad #tunnel #tunnels #railroadphotography #trainspotter #regionalrail #commuterrail #traintracks #history #urbanhistory #infrastructure #cities #buildbackbetter https://www.instagram.com/p/CW6Cx2QDqrR/?utm_medium=tumblr
