READING 8/3/24 - THE COMPLETE FATHER BROWN STORIES - G.K. CHERSTERTON
BBC ANNOUNCES SERIES 12 OF FATHER BROWN
This morning I read that the BBC are making another series of Father Brown. My husband loved these and was forever watching them on iPlayer. He had bought me The Complete Stories of Father Brown several Christmases ago and they have been forever next to the bed with me dipping in and out of them slowly.
They have not been picked up for awhile but I have been thinking about them fondly because of my husband. I am half way though The Secret of Father Brown. This week I was further thinking about them because I am reading Brideshead Revisited by Evelyn Waugh and The Wisdom of Father Brown is referenced (Lady Marchmain reads aloud from it).
This morning’s news from the BBC made me smile. My husband would be delighted.

PLANNING 5/3/24 - THE COMPLETE POEMS - EMILY DICKINSON
FOR QUOTE OF THE WEEK 11/1/24 - EMILY DICKINSON/TAYLOR SWIFT
One of my friends sent me the Guardian article today re the Taylor Swift/Emily Dickinson connection. This rumour has been circulating for some time primarily because of Evermore:
I can’t decide my focus - Taylor or Emily.
If I go with Taylor I like the idea of:
‘If I can’t relate to you anymore
Then who am I related to?’ (Dessner, B.D, Dessner, A.B., Swift and Bowery, 2020).
If I go with Emily the obvious is:
‘I spilt the dew -
But took the morn -
I chose this single star
From out the wide night’s numbers -
Sue - forevermore!’ (Dickinson, 1975, p.13).

READING 29/2/24 - THE LONELY LONDONERS - SAM SELVIN
This morning I heard A Good Read on Radio 4 and The Lonely Londoners by Sam Selvin was discussed. I bought this book as one of my comfort hardbacks. My inscription reads:
Tumblr media
For the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee - on the Big Jubilee Read book list.
I’d never heard of it when I bought it but will read it after hearing the discussion.

PRESENTS 9/1/24 - MISS MASHAM’S REPOSE - T.H. WHITE
My friend and book group leader who I visit every Friday afternoon gave me this book for my birthday yesterday. Her daughter delivered it to me in the evening singing Happy Birthday on the doorstep.
My friend was 90 last November and this summer is 20 years of book group. She is a great fan of children's literature and reads it at times of stress. When my husband was first diagnosed with leukaemia at the beginning of last year I chose three children’s books from her collection to help me:
Jenny Spring - Ruth Clark
Four Plus Bunkle - M. Pardoe
The Borrowers - Mary Norton
William the Good - Richmal Crompton
I have heard of Miss Masham’s Repose and know it to be a favourite of my friend’s but I never knew it was by T. H. White. I remember the Christmas my mother gave me The Sword in the Stone and how I devoured it.

COPING 8/1/24 - CHRISTMAS AND BIRTHDAY PRESENTS FROM PHILIP
Today is my birthday and apart from lunch with a friend I am home alone (yesterday my sister and brother took my daughter and I out to lunch).
After lunch today I bought myself a couple of books.
I already have the Christmas books I treated myself to in memory of Philip. These are four Agatha Christie hardbacks: ‘Five Little Pigs’, ’Dead Man’s Folly’, ‘The Murder of Roger Ackroyd’ and ‘The Mysterious Affair at Styles’ plus the interactive edition of ‘Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland’.
The Christies are in recognition of Philip’s tradition of getting me crime fiction plus our mutual love of Poirot portrayed by both David Suchet and Kenneth Branagh. ‘Alice’ is because Philip bought me a couple of these for Christmas 2022.
These are my birthday books:

I had been eyeing them both up in December. I can well imagine Philip buying me the ‘Watership Down’ (we liked the local connection and would walk on Watership Down) and even though I have several editions of ‘The Wind in the Willows’ this one is in colour and Philip would approve.

PRESENTS 3/1/24 - FROM MY FRIEND CHRISTMAS 2023
This excellent mug was a present from my friend who had invited me on Christmas Day. There is also a book mark.
Christmas lunch was excellent - roast salmon with vegetables including a variety of squashes. (My friends are South African).
The mug is too good to use so it is sitting on the desk.

PRESENTS 3/1/24 - FROM MY DAUGHTER CHRISTMAS 2023
My daughter always gives me the trendy fiction I ought to be reading. ‘Tomorrow and Tomorrow and Tomorrow’ by Gabrielle Zevin is no exception. I have seen it in book shops so was pleased to unwrap it.
The ‘Tarot Bible’ by Sarah Bartlett is interesting. I am superstitious enough re religion to be wary of tarot but maybe I need to embrace it. I collect playing cards so obviously the cards were a must.
My daughter lives in Hove Actually and the tarot strikes me as a very Hove Actually present.
