im in the process of reading the Raven cycle right now and it occurred to me that blue sargent and Neil josten are on opposite sides of the same spectrum

Blue spends multiple novels trying to convince herself that she doesn’t love gansey so she won’t be too heartbroken when he dies

while Neil spends multiple novels trying not to form connections with the other foxes/ being glad Andrew “hates him” so that they won’t be sad when he dies

FINALLY SOMEONE WHO RESPECTS THE FACT THAT NEIL LIKES TO COVER UP. ANYTIME SOMEONE ACKNOWLEDGES THAT IT MAKES ME SO HAPPY!! 😭😭🖤

I noticed that Neil's body positivity in Fandom is focused on him being sexy and showing skin and wearing crop top, skirts, and skinny jeans, rather than on his personal comfort. I think this comes from the newer body positive concept that one has to be sexy to feel powerful and one has to be fuckable to be worthy.

Neil is attractive, but he is no longer conventionally attractive. And he likes it that way, because with the face mutilation, although people stare at him now, he doesn't look like his father.

That being said, he still doesn't want to show more of his scars. He can't hide his face and wear mittens all the time, but he can still wear long sleeves when he wants to or even just wear baggy tee shirts and looser jeans.

The scene where Andrew bought Neil clothes for Edens, he made sure they were actually his size, but still fully covered his body and would be comfortable. They're black cargo pants with many pockets and are practical, the long sleeve shirt has rips but has fabric underneath, the boots are heavy and practical and Neil thinks about keeping them. Andrew didn't dress Neil up to objectify him at Edens, he gave Neil those clothes because Edens is an alt club and Neil learns when they get there that he definitely would've stood out more without them, and Andrew dressed him conservatively compared to the rest of the club attendees.

I personally really don't like the idea that Neil has to overcome his truama by putting it on display or prove that he's not bothered by his scars by showing them off all the time.

As someone with scars on my torso and back, the truth is? People will look at them and make comments. I've gotten a lot of comments over the years about it, anywhere from "I mean... They're kinds cool if you think about it!" To "wow your skin looks like a ballsac". I've had ex roommates ask if someone held me down and did it, just point blank. I've also had people assume how I've gotten them and I've also had people just openly ask about them, curious. Its not unusual for me to wear a tank top and notice the person isn't making eye contact with me 50% of the time because they keep accidentally looking at one of my scars instead.

And the thing is? Medically speaking my scarring is considered very mild. Sure, there is a lot of it, but its mild. Neil has severe scarring, neil asks the FBI if he even still has enough face left for the press to recognize. When I see people play down Neil's scars or try to write them off as "actually attractive and add to his features" or "interesting" it annoys me. I also see neils scars reduced a lot in art, which also I personally find offensive. People are allowed to do what they want, but as a person with scars I'm not a fan.

If people with scars want to write about him finding them sexy and showing them off, or getting all those steroid shots and creams, or not having keloiding? go ahead project how you want, it's just not for how I see Neil and not for my personal taste in body positivity.

I want Neil to have more scars than me and my friend. We were always the most scarred people we knew, him more than me, but it was still considered pretty mild from a medical perspective.

Personally, I want Neil's scars to be bad and objectively startling and "unattractive", not "interesting" and "actually make him hotter". Because Neil doesn't want his scars to make him hotter, he's just greatful he looks that much less like his dad now, and that he's still alive. Neil doesn't care about being fuckable or hot or sexy, so why would his body positivity reflect those ideas?

Ok genuine question and I really don’t want this to come across as hate. Do you recognise that Andrew is deeply flawed as a character? I saw your post about him being a comfort character and to each their own but I really don’t see how he can be one. He is a horrible person. Once again not hate I’m just curious

hi there Anon. so I debated answering this question for a little, but since you clarified it wasn't hate twice, I suppose I'll bite.

to me, andrew minyard is a fighter.

we all know he suffered immensely throughout his entire childhood. not even a week into the world he was shoved into the foster system by his mother, who then decidedly went back for aaron and left andrew to fend for himself. his formative and fundamental years were tainted and marred by people – by adults – that he should have been able to trust. he was sexually abused for the first time at age seven. he went through twelve different foster families, all of which abused him in the same sense, only to end up with drake.

this person – this fucking child, who by this point is burdened and untrusting and petrified of human contact, finds out he has a brother. a brother that drake immediately threatens. and andrew cares, he cares a lot. nobody has ever fucking listened to him before when he attempted to tell them something was wrong, so what would he gain from trying again? he decides to take matters into his own hands, gets himself thrown into juvie. but he protected aaron and that is the point. when he meets aaron he promises the same thing, that he’ll protect him, always – from anyone or anything. when he figures out tilda is abusing aaron, andrew offers her a chance. he is entirely clear about what will happen if she hurts aaron again, but she hits him anyway. so andrew does what he believes he has to do to protect aaron. because he will do whatever it takes to protect his brother.

a few years go by and his family has grown a little with cousin nicky. nicky gets violently attacked by homophobes and andrew has never cared about consequences to his own person, he just cares about keeping his loved ones safe. again, there is only one thing that has ever worked in getting the job done. so he almost kills the four attackers and as a result gets put on prescription medication that he does not need. they say the attack was abnormally violent, but andrew thinks violence is the only method that is effective and he know’s it will keep himself and his family safe. of course it is his go to option, he has never been taught or offered any other perspective.

I imagine the rest of the story does not need telling, we all read the books.

each and every member that was added to andrew’s found family, was another person andrew felt the need to protect. andrew, who has experienced every inch of cruelty a human can offer, who does not want the people he cares about – the people he loves, to go through the same thing he did. he never threatens anyone without purpose and due to the lack of guidance in his life – throughout his childhood, he has no reason to believe his actions or reactions are unjustified.

to andrew it is simple; an eye for an eye. you harm this person that I care about and I will make sure you suffer in the same sense.

and yes, his acts of protection are violent. they are not conventional and on occasion I can see why people believe they are immoral. but to critique andrew and his behaviour, you must take into account the plethora of trauma he carries and his purpose behind every action, too. it works as a means of explanation.

andrew is not horrible, he is not a monster, he is not un-worthy of love. he is quite literally a nineteen-year-old boy, who was never treated with love or care. who experienced zero nurture, who did not have the liberty of developing a moral compass when every aspect of his life was a fight. andrew is emotionally, mentally and physically scarred by his past and I think some people take that fact a little too lightly.

do you know how difficult it is to claw your way back up after every single person in your life has beaten you down?

andrew is broken, but he is healing and he is learning. in the books, the journey of his growth is just beginning. to deem andrew horrible is to disregard every inch of trauma he experienced, before reaching the place he is at today. to deem andrew horrible is to endorse the idea that he cannot grow from mistakes and flaws that are born out of unjust treatment and cruelty.

when I look at andrew, I see someone on an uphill battle to being better, doing better, allowing himself to indulge, letting people into his head, chipping away at his ice cold outer layer to show that he feels and cares and loves. someone who is slowly developing knowledge that comes naturally for kids who grow up in the right environment.

I see someone who has every right to be be bitter and consumed with rage. someone who does not care about himself, but cares about those around him. someone that has been let down by everyone so many times. someone who despite it all, is trying anyway.

I see someone who deserves a second chance at life and someone who deserves more than being reduced to the label of horrible.
