Prompt 28: “Care to give me a back scratch?”
Queens: Catherine Parr and Anna of Cleves
Cathy looks up as she senses someone in the doorway. Having the room at the end of the hall, she wasn’t in the habit of closing her door like the other queens were. She smiles at the queen in her doorway. “What’s up, Anna?” she inquires, giving Anna her full attention. “Are you alright?” She continues, sensing something is off. Anna nods, and the second she opens her mouth to speak, Cathy gets an answer as the smell of alcohol permeates the room. “Care to give me a back scratch?” Anna slurs. Cathy sighs. “Anna, how much have you drank?” Anna shrugs. “Too much? Not enough? I don’t know” Anna informs Cathy.
Cathy thinks for a minute before concluding. “Right, come with me” she instructs Anna. Anna follows her down the hall to the bathroom, not questioning anything. Cathy pushes the drunk queen into the shower and turns it on. “Crap” Anna gasps “what was that for?”. Cathy rolls her eyes. “I had to sober you up somehow, Anna. You were barely making any sense” she informs the now drenched queen. “God I’m freezing Catherine” Anna complains. Cathy stands back, allowing Anna to move. “Next time you go and get drunk on a weekday, think about how much you drink”. Anna sighs and pulls off her wet top. Cathy watches this unfold. “What’s up, Anna?” She asks, handing Anna a towel. Anna shrugs and dries herself off. “Come on, Anna, go find yourself some dry clothes, and we’ll talk about this”.  Anna smiles faintly and tells Cathy she’ll be back in a few minutes. Cathy nods and uses this time to return the bathroom to order before heading back to her room.

Prompt 13: “I’m sorry I’m not what you signed up for.”
Queens: Jane Seymour and Anne Boleyn
Anne curled up in the corner. 2am had been and gone, and she was reasonably sure no one would be awake anymore. “Stupid, stupid, stupid” she mutters under her breath. Tears stream down her face as she finally releases all the pent up emotions from the day. She’s so upset she doesn’t even hear the door open. “Anne?” a voice whispers from the doorway. Anne jumps, not realising anyone was awake. “Yeah,” she replies, wiping away her tears in an attempt to pretend she’s okay. “Annie, are you okay?” the voice questions. Anne nods and whispers “yeah- no I’m fine- I’m fine”. Jane reveals herself to be the voice. “Annie, what’s the matter?” Jane whispers, spotting the tear tracks running down Anne’s face. Anne shrugs and whispers “It doesn’t matter Jane. Go back to bed. Wait- why are you even awake?” She quickly adds, desperately trying to distract Jane. Jane shakes her head and sits down opposite Anne. “Anne, I can tell something is up. You’ve been crying, and it’s obvious so don’t try to deny it,” Jane says, observing Anne. Of all the queens, Anne is the most likely to run from her emotions, sometimes literally. But Anne does not attempt to run this time; in fact, she barely moves at all. “I’m sorry I’m not what you signed up for” she whispers, tears streaming down her face again. “Annie, what do you mean?” Jane queries, making her way over to hug Anne. Anne immediately accepts the hug, sobbing into Jane’s chest while Jane strokes Anne’s hair and lets her cry. Something about having someone to hold is strangely comforting to Jane.
Minutes pass and Anne calms down eventually. Jane cautiously poses the question again. “What do you mean Annie?”. Anne curls up. “I’m sorry I’m not what you signed up for” she repeats. Jane looks confused. “I’m nothing like how I used to be, and I feel so bad that I was so mean to you back then, but I don’t know how to express that, and I don’t know who I am, and everyone seems to have figured themselves out, and I don’t know what to do” Anne blurts, not taking a second to breathe. “Okay, Annie breathe please” Jane starts, stroking Annie’s hair. Anne starts to calm down and relaxes a little. “Sorry Janey, I overreacted” she whispers, slightly embarrassed. “I get it, Annie” Jane responds “none of us knows what we’re doing. We’re just muddling through. I forgave you years ago Anne, and I spent time with Henry, I know what he’s like, and I can’t hold it against you”. Anne looks at Jane in disbelief. “Why don’t you hate me?” She whispers in shock. “Even I hate me”. Jane shakes her head. “Annie, I don’t hate anyone. I’m not going to hold anything that happened in the past against you. I did things I’m not proud of too, but this is a new life, and I intend to treat it as such” Jane tells Anne. Anne doesn't look convinced, but she’s not crying anymore, and Jane acknowledges the progress. There’s a long way to go, but they’ll get there.

Prompt 26: “Your bedhead is really cute.”
Queens: Anne Boleyn and Catherine of Aragon
Anne looked up as Catie entered and mumbled a quick hello. It was too early for her to be planning something like a prank and she didn’t want to cause an argument right now. Catie looked a little surprised at Anne’s words but politely responded with “good morning”.
They quickly lapsed back into silence as the minutes passed and it wasn’t until Catie sat down at the table to eat that either queen spoke again. Anne dared to look up as she asked Catie who was in charge of the shopping this week. It was usually Jane, but sometimes someone else took control, and Anne would readily admit to not paying attention when they decided this. Catie puts down her drink and subtly rolls her eyes. She responds politely but bluntly, telling Anne she is in charge of shopping this week. Anne bites her lip, contemplating her next move. Deciding it was necessary, she quickly asks if Catie could pick up some more orange juice, quickly adding that it’s for Kitty and not her. Catie looks slightly confused but nods and adds this to the list.
“Why didn’t Kitty just ask me herself?” She wonders out loud. Anne sits quietly, eating her toast and ponders whether it’s worth answering that. Eventually, she decides it shouldn’t cause an argument and calmly informs Catie that Kitty is a little scared of her; in fact, all the queens are. Catie looks surprised at this new information. She sits and contemplates it for a few minutes while Anne keeps eating, taking way too long to eat a few pieces of toast. Both the queens are lost for what to say, and the tension between them is obvious. Catie looks up and hesitantly makes an offhand comment in an attempt to break the tension. “Your bedhead is really cute” she announces casually. Anne perks up in a way vaguely resembling a meerkat and smiles faintly. “... thanks?” She whispers hesitantly. “Just an observation you know” Catie responds. Anne looks a little confused but accepts it. “Wish it was as easy to untangle as it is cute” she whispers staring into the space behind Catie. A brief silence takes over before movement catches Anne’s attention. Catie moves over to the sink and stares out the window. “Do you want me to help you untangle your hair?” Catie whispers, almost too quietly for Anne to hear. Anne looks over and responds, loud enough to break the tension up completely. “I- yeah that’d be great Catie. I really should tie it up like Kitty does I just forget”. Catie nods although her shorter hair rarely tangled the way Anne’s was right now.
A few minutes elapsed as Anne ran and got her detangling spray and hairbrush. Ten minutes later, Jane walks in. Expecting absolute chaos, she’s shocked to find Catie brushing Anne’s hair as they talk. Anne glances over and smiles at Jane. “Morning Jane” Catie chirpily announces. Jane responds and also addresses Anne, who answers. “Y’know when Kitty said you two were in here alone I wasn’t expecting to find this” Jane admits. “What were you expecting to find?” Catie inquires, genuinely intrigued. “Honestly? Chaos, destruction and maybe a dead body. You two aren’t exactly known for getting along”. Anne chuckles and informs Jane that sometimes she can behave. ”Especially if it means someone does my hair for me” she adds.

Prompt 45: “All due respect, but that’s a bunch of crap.”
Queens: Jane Seymour and Katherine Howard
Kitty screams as she wakes up, sitting bolt, upright and struggling to catch her breath. Within seconds the door is open, and Jane has entered the room. “Ssh Kitty you’re okay my little one”. Kitty is already in tears, and unlike usual, she backs away from Jane. Jane’s face changes, she’s used to Kitty having nightmares, all the queens do, but she’s never reacted this way before. “Kitty it’s just me. It’s Jane okay I’m not here to hurt you” she whispers hoping that will bring Kitty to reality. But instead, Kitty backs away yet again, tears still streaming down her face. “Talk to me Kitty” Jane whispers, keeping her distance in an attempt not to upset the girl more. “You hate me,” Kitty whispers, not looking up. “What? No, I don’t Kitty Kat. I could never hate you” Jane replies in shock. “You do hate me!” Kitty insists. “You think I’m weak and stupid and a child and all I do is ruin your fun” she continues. “Kitty that’s not true at all little one, not at all” Jane whispers, almost in tears. Kitty looks up slightly. “You should hate me, though. Why don’t you?” She whispers, curiosity breaking through the fear and anger in her voice. Jane gestures to the end of the bed, wordlessly asking if she can sit down. Kitty nods and holds her arms out for a hug. Within a second, Jane has Kitty wrapped in her arms and is gently rocking her back and forth. “Katherine Howard you’re like the daughter I never had” she starts, but Kitty interrupts her. “You should be glad” she whispers, half smiling. “Look what happened to Catie and Annie”. Jane pushes a piece of hair off Kitty’s face and nods, acknowledging that she had, in some ways, been luckier than the queens preceding her. She continues, “you mean everything to me. No one will ever replace my son, but having you helps more than you’ll ever know”. Kitty smiles and whispers “I would never want to replace Edward, but I’m glad I can help a little”. Jane sits for a few minutes, just stroking Kitty's hair and rocking her slightly. Kitty remains silent, knowing Jane is reminiscing. After a few minutes, Jane speaks again. “Do you wanna talk about what happened Kitty? Don’t tell Catie cos she won’t like this, but I will not hesitate to kill anyone who bothers you” Kitty shakes her head and whispers “it’s in the past now. All those men. They kept telling me you didn’t like me. That none of the queens did. That Anna hated me for taking her place and that Anne hated that I took attention from her beheading. I just felt like they were telling the truth” Kitty curls up, mostly out of fear. Jane sighs and ponders her next words. “All due respect, but that’s a bunch of crap. I love you, and Anna loves you, Anne adores you! We all love you! Cathy might not have the words to say it sometimes, but she loves you, and I know she does” Kitty snuggles into Jane and whispers “you swore Janey. You don’t do that” Jane shakes her head and whispers “I don’t swear, but it’s true Kitty. Nothing they say is true. I hope you understand that now. And even if you don’t, I will always be here to remind you and so will everyone else” Kitty nods, somehow already falling back to sleep. “Sleep well, little one” Jane whispers, laying down with the young queen on top of her. “Mmm night Janey” the young queen mumbles, already asleep.

Women Executed by the Tudors
Joan Boughton was an eighty-year-old widow who was burnt at the stake for holding views associated with John Wycliffe. This is the same execution that Thomas Cromwell witnesses as a child in the Wolf Hall series.
Elizabeth Barton was a servant in the household of Thomas Cobb who began prophesying that Henry VIII would die if he married Anne Boleyn, and even stating that she had seen the place in hell where he would go. Elizabeth was arrested in 1533 and hanged at Tyburn, with her head being put on a spike to be displayed on the London Bridge afterwards.
Tumblr media
Anne Boleyn was the second wife of Henry VIII who was executed by beheading on false charges of adultery, incest and plotting to kill the king.
Tumblr media
Mabel Brigge was executed for committing a “black fast”, which was fasting in the belief that it would cause death to Henry VIII and Thomas Howard, 3rd Duke of Norfolk. (I’m not sure how she was executed, but I assume she was hanged).
Margaret Pole was sixty-seven-year-old woman who was executed by beheading for corresponding with her son, Reginald Pole.
Tumblr media
Katherine Howard was the fifth wife of Henry VIII who was executed by beheading for allegedly committing adultery with Thomas Culpeper.
Tumblr media
Jane Boleyn was a lady-in-waiting who was executed by beheading for allegedly assisting Katherine Howard in committing adultery.
Anne Askew was a writer and poet who was burnt at the stake for holding Protestant viewpoints.
Tumblr media
Jane Grey was executed by beheading for agreeing to be placed on the throne, when most believed that Mary I was the rightful successor.
Tumblr media
Mary, Queen of Scots was executed by beheading for being involved in a plot against Elizabeth I.

Prompt 60: “I know you lied to me.”
Queens: Katherine Howard and Anne Boleyn
Kitty tip-toed past Anne’s door. Her cousin seemed to be asleep, and Kitty intended to keep it that way. But her luck ran out, and as she made it past the door, a creaking noise alerted her to its opening. She froze. ”I know you lied to me”. The dark tone makes Kitty shiver. “What do you mean?” Kitty asks, feigning innocence. “Don’t try and pretend like you don’t know what I’m talking about Katherine. The evidence is right in front of me” Anne responds, looking Kitty up and down. “Anne, I don’t know what you mean. And you’re kinda scaring me” Kitty whispers trying to back away. “You’re wearing my jumper. You told me you didn’t have it and yet you seem to be wearing it” Anne responds. “Oh,” Kitty whispers. “Did you want it then?” She continues, going to take it off. “No Katherine I just thought I’d ask about it and do this now for fun. Of course, I want it! You have your clothes so stop stealing mine” Anne responds, her voice getting louder till she’s almost yelling.
Kitty pulls the jumper off and throws it at Anne, backing away as she does. She squeals as she comes to an abrupt stop and then relaxes when she realises it’s Cathy behind her. “Grow up Anne,” Cathy says, wrapping the pink queen in a hoodie. “Cathy I’m 519 years old, and I will act however I please. Especially when she steals my clothes” the latter part of this is aimed at Kitty who is now cowering in Cathy’s arms. “Kitty go and get the cookies from the kitchen. They’re in the cupboard above the sink” Cathy instructs. Kitty scampers away, avoiding Anne as much as she can.
“Anne Boleyn you know full well Kitty borrows our clothes because it helps her anxiety. If she lied to you, then it’s obvious that she needed that jumper for some reason. If it’s this important to you then maybe you should’ve spoken to her about it like the 519-year-old women you claim to be rather than terrifying her” Anne is backing away at this point, unused to seeing Cathy like this. Kitty arrives back with the cookies and hands them to Cathy. Cathy accepts them and throws them in Anne’s direction. “Take them and go and think about what you’ve done. When you’re ready to apologise, come and find us”. Anne kicks the floor and mutters under her breath as she skulks off. Kitty snuggles into Cathy and follows her to her room to watch movies.
