Shazam was actually such a good movie holy shit.
Like kinda ironically but also totally sincerely. It was stupid but in such an enjoyable way.
It had a diverse and endearing cast of characters who all had a satisfying arch in some form, the villain was actually threatening, the jokes were genuinely funny... I could go on. Despite having a pretty predictable plot (underdog gets power, doesn’t think he needs help, is only able to succeed with the help of his loved ones) there were multiple moments where it genuinely surprised me. I thought it was going to be more... kid-friendly than it was. I guess if you know the rating going into it (unlike me) you might have a little better idea of what to expect, but even for a PG-13 movie, it had it’s more adult moments.
I think my favorite part was the realistic portrayal of what a kid who was suddenly an adult would do. I’ve seen that a couple times so it’s easy to follow the same track as the rest, like “oh, he’ll watch an R-rated movie or whatever.” But no. This kid buys a whole case of beer, tries it, hates it, and buys a ton of candy instead. Then, he goes to a fucking strip club. That’s right. This isn’t some plucky young innocent.
Of course, there are plenty of things that missed the mark a bit. The plot was a little over-stuffed with sad backstories, and some of the lore wasn’t totally explained, but these things didn’t really take away from my enjoyment of the movie. It can get away with these things because doesn’t take itself too seriously. It had a clear sense of the story it was trying to tell. It wanted people to be able to enjoy watching it as much as the writers probably enjoyed writing it.
But who knows. It’s 1:00 am and I just saw the movie an hour ago, so maybe I’ll wake up and decide it was inexcusably bad and my initial reaction was just a result of delirium, but right now I’m saying that Shazam is a very good movie and, in my personal opinion, an instant classic.

Hi!
I made this blog because no one in real life wants to listen to me talk about queer literary theory. Those who did are sick of it by now. But because I can’t quit my bullshit, I’ve decided I need an outlet. Tumblr seemed like the best place because people love gay shit on here. Also, I can post big blocks of text and some crazy people might actually read it. So yeah. Hi.
