i saw someone point out that the trio aren't acting like actual kids and i really agree i think there's way too much healthy communication going on between them for this point in the series and we're missing out on percy and annabeth's pointless bickering driving grover up the wall

I'm surprised no one's talking about how much the cinematography of the new Percy Jackson series just... fucking sucks.

Like boring ass shots. Barely any camera movement. The actors don't seem to be moving that much either. The special effects look fine, but it's like they can't afford to do anything creative with the camera while we have that CGI.

Like take episode 4. We're in the Arch, and Percy is fighting the chimera. It just walks. He walks up to it. It takes like two swipes at him. He dodges once then just falls through the floor. That's basically it. I don't care if nothing more than that happened in the book, when you make an adaptation, you need to adapt it to fit your new medium. Which means you can't rely on writing style to create tension, you have to use the camera, the acting, the music to create that tension instead. It doesn't feel like there's any sort of urgency in any scene at all.

I was hoping they were going to go more Greek with it. Compose the shots with more of a Greek vibe to them. Put the characters in the center. Frame them with something around them. Make it look like something a part of the scene is actually a part of the framing. There was so much they could do. There were so many opportunities for creativity now that it's not in a written format, it's in a video format. We could have had so much, but it's so obvious that no one working on this project is excited for anything or has any sort of affection for the series. It's bland and dull. And I would say disappointing, except that would imply I had any sort of good expectations.

The biggest problem with the live action Percy Jackson series is the fact that in an attempt to make the universe more sensitive to modern and more accurate versions of Greek mythology/history in general, they make Annabeth look way worse than she ever would be. Like, I fully believe that Annabeth, while a child with skewed views, at the end of the day, is for the girls, so the fact that she gives Medusa NO GRACE, feels out of character, and the fact that she is so insistent about the purpose of the Great Arch, it’s frustrating, because Annabeth is not inept, she can understand multiple perspectives. I guess on the Medusa front, you can argue that agreeing with Medusa in any way would get her out of her mother’s good graces, but either way, I feel like her violent aggression toward Medusa after the story of Medusa is explained more truthfully is out of character for her. I dunno, it just doesn’t sit right with me. OTHERWISE THOUGH, This show is literally so amazing, and I can’t wait for the next episode!!!

i will refrain from making this list unnecessarily long so I’ll give u my top 5 but man there are SO MANY good ones & honestly i read too many it’s kind of a problem

check please ( @omgcheckplease on tumblr) - obviously y’all already know this one was going to be my all time favorite. ngozi’s characters & storytelling are some of my favorites and it’s such an uplifting story that i’ve read it over 5 times no joke

ladies of the knight ( @ladiesoftheknight on tumblr, also on webtoon) - did someone say wlw & knights???!!! @fionacreates sure as hell did. this story is still relatively new (only a couple chapters at this point i believe, but i think i have some catching up to do) but i absolutely love the story so far & the art style is just *chef kiss*

long exposure ( @longexposurecomic on tumblr, also on tapas) - this one i just read recently and i fucking love the story. i would call it a lowkey urban fantasy & there’s cool ass superpowers & a ton of even cooler characters!!

heartstopper ( @heartstoppercomic on tumblr, also on webtoons) - okay this one is so well known but i couldn’t not include it because i absolutely adore all the characters

manu ( @manu-graphic-novel on tumblr, also on tapas) - this one is also pretty new but damn if i’m not sooooo intrigued by the story! i really can’t wait to see where the story goes with this one
