that ID post you made sounds so mean. making fun of the "no spoons to id"? saying to just wait? thats like telling someone to wait until their disability is disabling them less. Which doesn't just happen.

Some people can't ID. And they shouldn't have to feel guilt about it. You can raise awareness to accessibility issues without being a dick to other disabled peoples issues.

this is such an incredibly interesting ask because I don’t think you actually took the time to read my post so let’s break it down.

1. you’re assuming I’m either not disabled or this is something I also don’t struggle with. newsflash: it is! image ID is the main reason I take so long to post.

2. I’m saying to wait because… if it’s a matter of spoons, you should do just that? spoons is a metaphor referring to the amount of physical and mental energy someone has for a task. they vary from person and from time to time. if you know you can have some, but now you have NONE, it is wise to wait until a period where you have more mental energy to do a short description. the reason why it bothers me is because people take the time out of their day to make a flag, a whole post with dividers and decoration, etc, but can’t put it in drafts for a little while until that energy is restored.

I suffer from severe executive dysfunction where on some days it is impossible to perform basic bodily functions, as well as chronic fatigue. Physical and mental illness is dependent on person to person, but personally I would and rightfully in fact feel guilty if I decided to post something without basic accommodation needs simply because I was having a bad dysfunction day and did not merely put it in drafts until I had the strength.

There are so many people in the community who are willing to help people with alt text and explain it or even do it for people. I’m in multiple public mogai servers where people who cannot do their own alt text often due to physical or mental illness ask for help from others.

The amount of you that advocate for disabled people but will fight tooth and nail against the statement that there isn’t really any excuse to not being accessible to other disabled people is fascinating.

if you don’t know where to start, here’s somewhat of a guide. it will follow: base, colours, symbols

BASE

the basis for my flag ids is typically ‘a flag with [X] horizontal stripes’. this could, of course, be vertical. with more detailed stripes, you may want to include references to certain patterns. for example.

‘the two outermost stripes have a scalloped edge pointing inwards’

‘a flag with five wavy horizontal stripes’

‘the stripe in the centre is thicker, and there are drips of different lengths on various different stripes overlapping the stripe below’

see? these will vary from complexity but ‘a flag with [X] horizontal (?) stripes’ will be your go to usually

COLOURS

some DONTS with colour: do not use specific hex codes. if you struggle with colours, you can use a colour picker, but do not paste into your id a string of letters and numbers. very specific colour names like vermillion or chartreuse may also be unhelpful.

DO: stick to the basic colours of the rainbow. you might want to add things like lime green, magenta, mustard yellow at your own discretion. you could also say green-yellow or blue-purple. Do not overcomplicate this. a list of key useful words: light(er), dark(er), desaturated, pale, bright, neon. examples:

‘A gradient from light blue to purple to bright magenta’

‘Red, darker red, blue, green, lighter green’

‘A gradient from black to red, then the inverse’

‘A gradient from white to pale pink. The outermost stripes have a light blue zigzag pattern’

SYMBOLS

symbols will be the most annoying part. the best advice I have is not to overcomplicate things. more complex symbols can be reduced to basic shapes. try to refer generally to colour, position, overall shape and direction. here’s three different examples

You may or may not have to use this much detail depending on the size of the symbol and its relevance on the image.

As someone who has expressly stated I hate discourse and I hate drama on this account, I do not HAVE to SPEAK on ANY situation. The only reason I ever said anything originally was because the account was, at that point, sheer impersonation and nothing else.
