So you know how there's this debate about how to pronounce the name of the planet Uranus? How there's the tee-hee "Yur-Anus" camp and the tries-to-be-dignified "YUR-a-nus" camp?
I'm here to propose that they're both wrong. The name comes from the Greek god Ouranos, the primordial god of the sky and the father of the Titans. Uranus is the one non-Earth planet in the solar system that got named after a Greek god rather than the Roman counterpart of a Greek god. So, the name is of Greek, not Latin, origin.
In Greek, the god's name would be pronounced "oo-ra-NOHS," with no "y" sound before the "oo." So far as I know, there is no such "y" sound in Greek, at least not ancient Greek. So, I submit that that should be the proper pronunciation of the planet name. I suppose if you want to be more phonetically correct with how the last syllable is spelled, it could be "oo-ra-NUS," but that's quibbling.
Anyway, yeah, I'm off to write a letter to NASA or something.

@suratan-zir
I think she's adorable. :)
As per the request from @a-little-rat:
Tumblr media
Everyone, meet Rattina! 🐀🩰🌼
Tumblr media
This prompt could have easily gone in a nightmare fuel direction and maybe for some it still is, but I think rats are very very cute and I think this Sim is very very cute.
My inspiration for her:
Tumblr media
Are you kidding me?! You can't get any cuter than a rat in tiny tutu aldjfalskjfa;shfahgashgashg LOOK AT HER!!!!!! 🥺
Tumblr media
You see the resemblance, yes? Hehehe.
Like all rats, Rattina is friendly, intelligent, and neat. Yes, you heard me. Pet rats are very clean and groom themselves regularly like cats.
Tumblr media
Look at those impeccable nails!
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Rattina can be a little silly at times but she's often quite shy around new people. It takes a while for her to come out of her shell but giving her a bit of cheese or even a strawberry does expedite the process quite a bit.
Tumblr media
Rats are highly trainable and Rattina is no exception. She's been taking ballet lessons since she was a child and although she's no prima ballerina, she loves nothing more than showing off her moves.
So what do you think? How'd I do? Does she have the essence of rat?

While I'm here, have some pics of some cool creatures that I found on various planets in No Man's Sky. Because I can and because, frankly, I've been spending far more time in that game than in TS3 lately.
Bad simmer! Bad! No biscuit!

Use for the Transmogrifier mod #864,351:
Tumblr media
Turning a regular double bed into a dream pod. Don't know why I didn't think to try this before because I kind of like the dreaming function but really don't like the actual dream pod bed, but it dawned on me as I've been organizing more modern/futuristic-looking CC that I should try this. I wasn't sure it would work, but it does. The only issue is... Well, this:
Tumblr media
The sim sleeps above the covers (not really a big deal, in my opinion) and the dream pod's mist and forcefield effects are there, which is a bigger deal. There isn't much to be done about the former, but I'm thinking the latter might be addressable with the No Effects Mod Maker. I'll fiddle with that later and see what I can come up with.
Anyway, yeah. I'm futzing around with sort of rebuilding Oasis Landing, and I really don't want to use the Dream Pod bed in every house. Because it's oogly. Now, I have options.

I mooned you! :D And it's only a "little bit" photoshopped! *cough*
Sorry, I've not been around much again. Honestly, I've been playing lots of No Man's Sky. I just haven't been in much of a Sims-playing mood, and I've been playing No Man's Sky instead of scrolling through Tumblr. I know, I'm awful. :)
BUT! I am looking to do an Ultimate Overhaul™ of Oasis Landing, which I can keep on hand to use whenever I go there in a save. I always add lots and stuff to it, and I'm tired of doing it every damn time.
And then I decided to also make an even more elaborate version and mess around with playing Oasis Landing as a quasi-homeworld via the Traveler mod. For that version, I'm demolishing all the stupidly-big EA residential lots and replacing them with more smaller lots, on which I'll build my own things. I've been gathering CC for that project version, since I'm not a fan of most of the Into the Future or Store "future" stuff, and there's not much in the way of furniture and fixtures that's passable for a "future" look in the game otherwise. Some of the Late Night stuff will do it, but otherwise it's slim pickings to use to furnish a whole world. But CC means downloading stuff, looking at it in-game to see if it meets my quality standards and is also sufficiently maxis-matchy, making collection files so that I have a prayer of finding what I want while building, etc. It's time-consuming and not very Tumblr-sharing-friendly, so...Yeah. That's what I'm up to when I'm touching Sims at all.

Yet another stupid arboretum lot. LOL My initial plan was to make the bridge arched...but then I didn't feel like messing around with CFE, so...Yeah. Flat bridge. Lazy!
Also, sorry I disappeared again. No Man's Sky got a fairly beefy update last week, and I've been playing it a lot, so I had nothing to share here. Plus, I'm bad at allocating time to sit and keep caught up here, especially since I don't use phones and shit. I am a bad, bad simblr. I don't know why anyone follows me. LOL
But anyway! Arboretum lot! I used @omedapixel's decorating tools a fair bit on this one, to lower plants and rocks into the ground because most of them just look a lot better that way. (And it makes me feel like I'm building in Planet Zoo. LOL) I just wish we could use the tools in Edit World, because every time I place a tree in the world it sits awkwardly on top on the ground instead of looking like it's actually planted. Plus, I could fix those fantasy acacias in the background so that they don't sit on top of the ground like they do. But, at least I can sink on-lot trees a bit.

A few people said they were interested in this insane thing, so…Here it is. This is for those three of you who might like to play using realistic life spans and want your seasons to match, including more realistic weather patterns.
As always: This is a preset for use with the NRaas Tempest mod. General info about this project as well as installation/use instructions are here, and here is a link to the tag page for all the presets I’ve posted so far.
This one is an expansion of the non-default 12-day-seasons version of this preset, based on Bar Harbor in Maine in the US, so the basic description on that preset applies here, too. But this one has a 336-day-long year consisting of four 84-day-long seasons, each of which is further broken down into three 4-week-long months. So, it will not work properly unless you use 84-day-long seasons. Each week of each month has a slightly different temperature range than the previous or following one (so that autumn, for instance, gets slowly but progressively colder) and slightly different chances of various weather patterns (so that "April," for instance, gets progressively less snowy). That said, I've expanded the possible temperature ranges and amplified the chances of "bad" weather in the middle two weeks of both "January" and "July," so you have the possibility of a "heat wave" and/or stronger thunderstorms in midsummer and a "cold snap" and/or prolonged blizzards in midwinter, which is something that isn't really possible with the shorter presets I've shared.
Because you must use 84-day-long seasons to use this preset, you'll need a mod to make that possible, because the longest seasons you can have without a mod are 28 days long. You'll also want to disable the vanilla seasonal transitions because they are far too short for seasons of this length and because proper transitions are built into this preset. You can do both of those things with this mod.
You may or may not also want to play with super-long lifestage lengths based on a 336-day-long year, but if you do you'll need to fiddle with your save's Options.ini file because you'll need lifestages longer than the max for the vanilla sliders. If you've never done that before, instructions are here. And if you want to do that but you'd rather not do the math to figure out how long to set your lifestages, I've put the numbers I use behind the cut below, for your convenience. There's also more babble about the preset that you may or may not care about as well as some mod recommendations that make playing super-long lifespans a little better/easier back there. But here's the download link first, for those who don't care about all that stuff:
Download the preset here.
The overall weather patterns in this preset are similar to the original Bar Harbor preset. They just change more slowly and realistically over time rather than being mashed down into 12 days and 4-day-long "months." So, I'm not going to go into all the details. But generally:
It's pretty rainy year-round and can rain during the day instead of snow even in the coldest months. Generally, the warmer months have longer possible stretches of no precipitation than the colder months do, but chances of precipitation are generally always high, usually slightly greater than or about equal to the chance of no precipitation.
It will start to snow in "November" and might not completely stop until "May." (As in, there is still a small chance of snow in the last week of "April," but there is no chance of snow in the first week of "May.") The temperatures in winter are generally going to be at or below freezing, so snow that falls during that time will be sticking around until it starts to warm up in spring. (So, if your game lags when there's snow on the ground, you might want to think twice about using this at all or maybe only use it in small and lightly-populated worlds.)
Fog can occur year-round but is most common in the late summer, autumn, and spring.
Rain/snow storms are generally set to be shorter (2 hours max, per occurrence) but moderately-intense, but in the mid-summer/winter weeks, storms can be much longer and heavier. And, of course, the game can choose multiple periods of rain/snow in a row, making for longer storms.
There is a chance of hail during the heavier midsummer storms, but it will not hail otherwise.
There is a 2% chance that hail will kill any harvestable plants and a 10% chance that hail or snow will revert any ready-to-harvest harvestable plants back to their mature but non-fruiting state.
Aside from the heat waves/cold snaps I mentioned, the highest temperature you'll get is 80F/27C, and the lowest is 13F/-10C. Nights are generally chilly, at best, year-round. For instance, in the summer, the nighttime temperatures are going to be around 55F/13C, except during the midsummer weeks. During the midsummer/midwinter weeks, the temps can be significantly warmer or colder than the "normal" high/low, up to 95F/35C in the midsummer weeks and down to -10F/-23C in the midwinter ones.
One thing: The preset only has the standard once-a-season holidays even though the seasons are very long. If you want to add more holidays to be more realistic (or if you want to remove them), instructions for doing that are in this part of my stupidly-massive Tempest tutorial.
Finally, the lifestage lengths I use for 366-day years as well as some mod recommendations that are useful when playing with super-long lifespans:
Baby: 252 (Yes, it's shorter than a year. I'm starting toddlerhood when the kid is 9 months old because, for one thing, babies are boring enough as it is. And for another, 9 months is about when kids are crawling competently and often figuring out walking.) Toddler: 1,092 Child: 3,024 Teen: 1,680 YA: 4,032 Adult: 11,760 Elder: 5,712
Kitten: 336 Adult Cat: 3,024 Elder Cat: 1,680
Puppy: 336 Adult Dog: 2,352 Elder Dog: 1,344 (I wish there were separate settings for small dogs and large dogs so that small ones could live longer than large ones, for realism purposes, but alas…)
Foal: 1,008 Adult Horse: 5,712 Elder Horse: 2,688
If you're going to attempt this sort of insanity, I would also strongly recommend that you use NRAAS Relativity and use the option to scale the time required to increase skills to the lifespan length. Otherwise, you're going to have Sims with maxed-out skills before they're an eighth of the way through childhood. Or earlier.
I also strongly recommend Consort's Age and Grow, mods, so that your adults actually age, visually, and your children/teens actually grow up. Since you're stuck with loooooooooooong life stages, at least your sims will visually change slowly over some of the longer stages.
And that's all I've got! Enjoy? Or something?

I hate April Fool's (and pranks and shit like that in general, any day) with a passion. My sense of humor runs sarcastic, not stupid/slapstick. So, my blog is safe in this regard.
reblog this if your blog is a safe space on april fools and won’t have any jumpers, screamers, or anything scary or anxiety inducing

Y'all post too much. LOL
I've been away from online stuff for a bit, between going up to Denver for the monthly visit (which is almost worse than when I used to get periods, dammit), and being busy and, frankly, spending time compiling the data for and, now, starting to put together a Tempest preset.
Unfortunately, the latter isn't a preset I'm going to share because I highly doubt that anyone would want to use it, given that it's designed for a 336-day year with 84-day seasons, meant for matching life stage lengths. So, basically simming in (sort of) real time. But hey! Maybe someone would be, and if so, yell at me. It's basically an extension/expansion of the Nova Scotia/Bar Harbor one. I'm making it because I feel like having a save with really long lifespans in a world that's basically a rustic fishing village. No, I do not know why. It isn't as if I don't have a hundred other saves to play. 🙄And yet, here we are.
Anyway, I don't have anything simmy to share, and there's no way I'm going to be able to catch up with about a week of posts on my dash, so...Yeah. Hey, mutuals! Consider all your posts from the past week liked. LOL Hopefully I'll be able to catch up with stories, at least.

🎵Another one bites the dust And another one gone, and another one gone Another one bites the dust, yeah🎵
Like Ken Buck in the original post on this, Mr. Gallagher had already announced that he wouldn't be running for re-election, but now he's also decided to retire early. He'll be gone as of April 19, which is likely strategic because, from the article:
There also won’t be a special election for Gallagher’s seat. His resignation will happen within a window in Wisconsin law that dictates the seat be filled in the general election.
Which means that seat is empty until January. BWAHAHAHAHAH! Nice going, Mr. Gallagher. This means the Republican majority will now be down to three or four seats, which, because of the way things work in the US Congress, means that the Republicans can now only afford to lose one vote, which basically means the House will never be able to get anything done without compromising with the Democrats.
OK, I'm sorry for posting about politics. Truly. I'll post something sims-related later to make up for it. But for me this is local politics, and Ken Buck -- a man with whom I vehemently disagree, politically, but whom I respect for his commitment to democracy and his stance on the 2020 election not being stolen and for his continuing denouncement of the January 6th insurrection despite things like death threats made against himself and his family by MAGA loonies -- has made my day today. I have literally (and I mean that in the true sense of the word) been spending my afternoon/evening periodically chortling from sheer schadenfreude, so I just have to memorialize this and hope that I don't have to eat my words in November.
For context, or for non-USians, or for just the (slightly) shorter version if you don't want to look at the article....
Lauren Boebert, a super-"MAGA" fascist, is, depressingly, my current representative in the US House of Representatives. She only barely won reelection in 2022 despite the fact that, while I live in a very blue, hippie spot of it, the district has historically leaned heavily conservative because most of the district is made up of very Christian rural ranchers, who are conservative, yes, but in their case, generally speaking, traditionally so. They're mostly not the weird, Trump-flag-waving, MAGA-cult breed of it. So, Bobo only won reelection in 2022 by a few hundred votes and, since then, Adam Frisch, the centrist (which, by non-US standards, is right-wing) Democrat who opposed her and is running again, has only gotten more popular, as the House has proceeded to get absolutely nothing done, despite having a majority, precisely because of the shenanigans of MAGA idiots like Bobo.
So, Bobo decides that for the 2024 election, she'll instead run for the district east of mine, which was Mr. Buck's and which is even more conservative. She announced this decision right after Mr. Buck announced that he was retiring and would not be running for reelection. It was obvious that Bobo figured that that district would be a much easier win than the traditionally conservative district she very nearly lost.
But just today, Mr. Buck announced that instead of staying in Congress until this coming January, he's out as of this coming Friday. Which forces a special election in his district to fill his seat until January. Our (Democrat) state governor announced that that election will on the 25th of June, which is by law the longest delay possible, thus leaving Mr. Buck's seat empty until then, thus eroding the Republicans' majority until then. And if Bobo wanted to enter that special election, she'd have to resign from her current seat immediately because you can't be a sitting congressperson for one district and run for and be elected in another. Bobo has announced that she's not going to give up her current seat. And, for various reasons, all of this means that her chances of winning Buck's district in the regular election in November are now worse. And, she can't change her mind and run for reelection in the regular election for her current district, even if she wanted to, because the deadline for entering that election has recently passed.
So basically it's (probably) bye-bye Bobo! (And probably hello, Mr. Frisch for me, and while I'd be happier with a progressive, I'll take a centrist over a MAGA idiot any day.) And also? Mr. Buck, who has publicly stated that his party no longer aligns with his values, has not only screwed Bobo with his well-timed decision to "spend more time with his family," but also Mike "Christian Nationalist Fascist" Johnson, the Speaker of the House -- who, as the icing on the cake, was not informed of Mr. Buck's decision in advance of the announcement of it -- as his parting gift to MAGA.
Why? Because the Republicans now have a majority of just four or five seats, and, from next Friday until July, when Mr. Buck's (most likely Republican but perhaps not MAGA) successor will be sworn in, they now have one less, with the next election only eight months away and at a time when the Repugs need all hands on deck, so to speak, if they have any hope of getting anything at all done and, therefore, of having anything "positive" (by the conservative definition of that word) that they can talk up and run on from now until November. I'm pretty sure this big "screw you" was Mr. Buck's intention before he announced even his original retirement plans, so...Well played, Mr. Buck. Well. Played.
The question is: Will other House Republicans with integrity (there are a few left) follow Mr. Buck's lead? Could we see the House change majority before the 2024 election? It's not likely, but it's possible! And either way, this one conservative man dealt a blow to the MAGAs today, and I, as an extreme leftie, am here for it.

I'm sorry, but this just sounds bizarre to me. I have a bachelor herd of 3-6 bucks that have lived on my property for a long time. They are so used to us that they do not run from us anymore, and there've been times when I haven't been paying attention and have opened the front door to find one of them right there, looking at me, and then when he sees it's just me, he goes right back to chewing on the bushes. And it's a constant battle to keep them out of the garden. And then in the autumn and winter, when the elk come down from higher elevation, they're all over the place, too, with the bulls making an unholy racket during the rut in the autumn, and woe to you if you run into one with your car because your car will come out the worse for it.
Now, I live in very rural Colorado, so this isn't entirely surprising. But, even when I lived in Manhattan in New York City, you didn't have to go far outside the city to see deer all over the place. So, I cannot even comprehend never having seen a deer....

Here's me reblogging myself again! :D This time, it's because @nornities kindly informed me that some anti-virus programs don't like .7z archives and will flag files in that format as malicious. I was not aware of that at all, so I apologize if anyone's had any issues.
I'm 99.875% sure that any flag on this file is a false positive, and just to be sure I've run a bunch of scans on my machine here and nothing was detected anywhere. But, just in case anyone can't or doesn't feel comfortable downloading the original file and wants to, I've also uploaded a .zip-format file, and you can download that here.
A Couple Quick and Dirty ('Cuz They're plants, LOL) Defaults….
Call me weird, but I hate the over-saturated and just too damn green foliage of some of the EA outdoor plants. So, I finally got on my ass and adjusted a couple that have been doing grievous damage to mine eyes for a long time now. Thought I'd share in case anyone has the same weird preferences as me.
So, I give you less-saturated and less-green texture replacements for the base game heather (without flowers) and the bulrushes from World Adventures. Here be the heather:
Tumblr media
My goal with this one was to make the foliage sort of match the buckhorn trees/shrubs that I use everydamnwhere. Because I often use them together, and the buckhorns are a nice yellowy, not-too-saturated green while the heather…well…isn't.
The pic above shows the buckhorns, the non-flowering heather being defaulted, and for comparison, a flowered heather with the original foliage.
And then we have the bulrushes:
Tumblr media
With the bulrushes, I wanted to make them blend better with the "Desert Debris" "shrub" grass that came with….Lucky Palms, I think?…because I often use them together. I also wanted to make the bulrushes blend in a little better with the clumps of swamp rushes that came with Ambitions because I'll often use the bulrushes to "fix" it when part of those rush patches are floating in the air. They also have the same sort of yellowy-green as the buckhorns, so those blend in, too.
So yeah. There they are. They're in one .7z folder but not merged. They're texture defaults because I don't want to learn how to clone shit, so there can be only one, but if you already have a default for either of them somewhere in your massive merged files but you like this one better, you can plop it in your Overrides folder and everything will be groovy.
Download them here.

When are we going to get rid of this stupid daylight savings shit? My circadian rhythm has been completely messed up since I had my surgery in September, and I've been trying to get back to my normal nocturnal self because I just feel all out of whack. And then one of my precious middle-of-the-night hours just gets snatched away and....ARRRRGH!
It's almost enough to make me move to Arizona. Almost.
