Went to Mohawk Bend to watch the USWNT and had The Big Mohawk. A double Impossible with fixin’s. It was amazing. I should’ve added tomatoes though. Also had a delicious IPA from Beechwood, the Amalgamator. The idea was making vegan Jamaican beef patties. But, I got the wrong pastry. I bought phyllo sheets, when I should have gotten a puff pastry (should’ve made my own). So, these are nowhere need a beef patty, but that doesn’t matter because the filling is so good. And the phyllo is dumb flaky. It works. Potato balls from Portos were my jam…but I don’t eat dead animal now so I haven’t been able to indulge for a while, until now. All it took was a little imagination, starting with a beyond meat patty, half of a red bell pepper, one habanero pepper (should have used 2), 1/4 of an onion, tomato paste and vegetable broth made up the filling. Mashed potatoes and seasoning make up the outer. Salute to Bossa Nova, a Brazilian restaurant here in Hollywood that has traditionally been one of my favorites. Before I stopped eating the meats. But, its a Brazilian restaurant, so you wouldn’t think that you could find a great plant-based option, but you can… and unlike a lot of restos around here, it isn’t just a bullshit plate of grilled vegetables and rice. It’s actually a proper meal. The time is really up for all of these places that think they get a participation trophy for just having the obligatory “vegetarian menu” but they need to start offering real full ass meals that are vegetarian and vegan. I’m lucky where I live that this is pretty easy to find, but not always. Real restaurants with real chefs, heads chefs, should have incredible options that have nothing to do with dead animals.
