i hope you know that this absolutely happens with the Tenmas as well, except not only are VBS, WxS, and L/n scrambling to celebrate all of their birthdays (because their Tenma teammate would be sad if they didn't celebrate the other two) but all three Tenmas are teaming up to celebrate the third Tenma's birthday party and its just a whole mess that somehow works out

My headcanon that An and Nene's birthdays being less than a week apart wasn't that much of an issue... At first. But now VBS and WxS are so close to each other, instead of preparing for one party for their own birthday girl and maybe a little thoughtful gift for the other one, both groups have sort of a birthday marathon where they try to organise both simultaneously.

They also try and fail to keep some things secret because An and Nene are invited for each other's celebration while also being included in the planning as well and An would absolutely not be able to keep her mouth closed about any kind of surprise for Nene around Nene.

Also you're fine don't worry, I don't mind. On a serious note, things like that always came naturally for me, so I don't think I can give substantial advice besides like...

Read/watch stuff more, especially high-quality media (something that is universally agreed to have good writing, anyway). Write down your thoughts and predictions and theories about the media over the course of reading/watching it. Notice which things you've guessed correctly, what you didn't, and why were you incorrect. Read more media/literary analysis, both internet essays and published analysis too, if you want to get real good at it. Learn about writing methods as well, because understanding how writing a story works from the inside and the methods writers use will help you better understand the intention behind certain things, which leads to a better understanding overall. That's probably the gift of it.

But I'm seriously not always right as well, so don't out me on a pedestal haha. I'm just hyperfixated on An Shiraishi. Admitting your mistakes is a very admirable quality if you dabble in literary analysis, you literally can't avoid messing something up even if you try.

Here's what I think people fail to realize about An's arc, and also why the producer's note makes me a little bit apprehensive; envy or jealousy in any form wasn't even hinted at to be An's feelings about Kohane until Kick it up a notch, because it wasn't that.

An was never jealous of Kohane's growth, it's openly stated in Bout to Be Beside you that it's not what makes An worry. She was anxious about Kohane outgrowing her and leaving her behind as a consequence of that growth, but not of the growth itself.

Anxiety is the most prevalent word that best describes An and Kohane's arc. An is always anxious about not being a good enough partner for Kohane, which results in her initial overprotectiveness in Singing in Sync and then the fear of being left behind in Bout To Be Beside You. An is insecure about herself as a person, but not about her skill; any sign of that or her being jealous doesn't appear until Kick It Up A Notch.

The timing of that is important, too; we've just been introduced to Nagi and the fact that An always wanted to be like her, and almost immediately after Kick It Up a Notch and Kohane solo happens. That is the catalyst towards An's feelings. They weren't present in An1 and An2, it just wasn't a thing.

An's arc isn't just one issue that drags on for a year, it's different issues stacked on top of each other, intertwined, but ultimately all stemming from the same root. An's arc isn't stagnant, it shifts and changes subtly while her overall conflict remains the same. Just because the surface of the water is still doesn't mean the bottom of the lake is.

It's so easy to miss that fact completely and take the surface impression at the face value, but that jealousy is not An's constant character trait. It's just one of the things she needs to figure out how to deal with, and is over all not even all that important to her character arc in the overarching narrative.

you, because im thinking about it: why do you think colopale hasn't really talked about toya and kohane's relationship at all? from my eyes, they've had very little interaction outside of group events (and really even 1-on-1 in them; the ones off the top of my head they actually talked to one another instead of in the group are an1, val3, and their vbs archive). do you think there's a reason behind this, or am i just missing their growing relationship?

I'll be honest with you: probably just bad writing + event format holding them back. I'm not exactly looking to be negative on this account but Sega have kind of written themselves into a corner with Kohane and she's not been getting that much development in general (compared to the others), and Touya has been pretty abandoned as well.

The First Concerto has redeemed Touya to some degree, so one can only hope either An5 or Kohane's next event will tackle Kohane's lack of deep connection between her and Touya, among other things.

well tl;dr: vbs' training arc isn't interesting compared to the others (and i like vbs), the writers like to sideline vbs' writing for a while i feel like (gestures to toya1+toya colofes not being addressed until toya4) (in this case, vbs realizing they want to surpass the WORLD, and then apparently just. forgetting about that.) and im sorry i like to ramble
