Honestly i understand how frustrating that probably was for the fandom, idk if he’s my guilty pleasure, I don’t completely understand putting him against Percy though they were not rivals

My thing is that he’s not Percy, him and piper aren’t percabeth and they’re not supposed to be??

I found him interesting mostly bc he could’ve been more but never got to be, he never got a chance to live for himself.

His mom abandons him age 2 and literally leaves him to be wolf (Lupa the goddess) food while she promises him to come back. We’re starting early with this betrayal train, and also learns that he literally can’t show weakness in any way or it’ll be his doom. He somehow survives Lupa’s training which most people go through when they’re idk NOT toddlers, tries to lay low and desperately doesn’t want to be a leader, he wants nothing to do with the position he just wants to live life. That doesn’t work and now he’s surrounded by people but never equals or genuine connections that aren’t one sided.

His memories are manipulated by Hera/Juno forcing him into a mostly loveless relationship. His fatal flaw the temptation to deliberately, he’s scared of deciding who he is and what he wants in fear of disappointing everyone. It’s what stopped him from being so great tbh.

It’s also what probably made him boring, he was too honorable/bland bro never had anything to say and was very apathetic to most thing (in a his reactions were never strong kind of way) he had every reason to wreck shit up (Think Thalia) and just didn’t which is pretty underwhelming.

But he did kill a Titan barehanded and called Zeus out without any remorse so he’s my little guilty pleasure.

bro, i need to know your opinion of Jason Grace from Percy Jackson. I mean as a character, I had never understood the hate train that went in and on about him though I do feel like Rick undervalued and underutilized his overwhelming potentiel.

Like it was all laid out man, the backstory, the relationships, the personality all of it, but Rick decided to just insert all of his character development at the worst times and introduce him in a way that set him up for failure. Then TOA came out and the whole population went crazy bc of his little… ‘accident’

Point is that I loved him so much and his sorry really broke my heart, I feel like he never truly got to explore himself, nor live for himself…he was 16.

What Hera took from him is my Roman Empire (pun intended)

I am a little older (stupid to say at 24 but the Avatar fandom are babies), so I had aged out of Percy Jackson (if one can) by the time of Magnus Chase and the Apollo series, so I've actually never read them. I was deep in high school by that point, I read mostly like... Stephen King and books for English class. Idk maybe I'd like him better if I read them??

Personally, I think the "hate train" for Jason stems from The Lost Hero. You cannot fully imagine how pissed we all were at that book unless you were excited and waiting for it for a year and then were slapped in the face with Jason. Like who the fuck are you, leave me alone, where is Percy? It felt like watching Pretty Little Liars: Original Sin instead of Pretty Little Liars. Like, I'm sorry, you will never be the Liars stop trying. Jason and Piper will never be percabeth and that's how we felt reading that book in 2010.

I was much more open to Hazel and Frank by The Son of Neptune, because I was getting answers about Percy. The effect softened with time and more character interactions, but it definitely hurt Jason and also Piper for a chunk of us. There could probably be essays about how Leo escaped that a little bit. That after effect has definitely stuck with me, and with others for sure.

I also personally always found him the most boring, I really think every other character has a cooler story then him. But to each his own! I'm now very interested to see if I like him a ton more rereading them as an adult. I enjoyed rereading the first book so so much, I've got to reread the others.

I didn’t mean to insinuate that, at least not that she held less sympathy than Quaritch of all people. I didn’t think of it that way because even in this “rewrite” she doesn’t kill spider. To me that already says a lot, I thought of this scene as a visual of how deep her sorrow actually was, after everything she’s been, after everything that’s been taken away from her, there came an opportunity to take control.

For once to be the one take take. Not just for her son, but for all the people she lost at his peoples hands. This comes in form of Spider. While I personally don’t doubt that she might’ve killed him had Quaritch not folded, I think it’s also clear that she’s not revenge hungry woman which I think necessary especially considering the indigenous point of view. This is the only situation I could see her doing something like that and she did what she had to do.

Because of this I’m glad this scene was changed as many people have either twisted it the wrong way or learned nothing from it. Neytiri isn’t cruel, she’s the daughter of a Tsahìk and with a big heart that doesn’t get to shine as often as it should. She may not care very much for him but she still values life, even the one her greatest enemies child.

In the final shot you can see the moment of realization when she pushes Spider behind her(in the movie). She didn’t keep him there longer than she had to and as soon as Kiri was safe. Also when I said I wanted to incorporate it I meant in a way of self reflection and intrusive thoughts,

“What if I/she did it?”

“What if he didn’t her go,” and other such thoughts because she’s a person, people do things they don’t expect from themselves a lot. It doesn’t mean you get to dehumanize them.

Outside of the blatant mischaracterization, I found it very insightful on how much Jake actually cares for Spider, for the first time we see him pleading for someone other than his wife and kids and I think that also says a lot.

The Parents from hell one had me on the edge of my seat I was so scared even though I know the outcome, well now we know that Neytiri was definitely going to kill, not even to bargain for Kiri but for revenge and that’s just ughhh i can’t wait to incorporate this in my fanfic

I gotta say, I do fundamentally disagree, at least about the parents one. It's not so much of a deleted scene as a full rewrite of the scene. If Neytiri's goal was to kill Spider and take revenge over saving Kiri, why did they do with the version where she lets him go immediately? I don't know, man, to me it seems like they filmed that and then decided it didn't work with the character or for what they had planned. It definitely makes sense to me that they chose not to go with that version. Even the name, "The Parents From Hell," it makes it seem like it's a dark alternate universe.

But yes, scenes that were missing and not included I am all for thinking of as canon! But this is a full rewrite. It's not canon, because it's not what happened in the final version. I think the reason they chose to change it is more telling than the fact that it was filmed in the first place.

But of course, I am mad it exists. I wish they never released it. I don't like what they seem to think of Neytiri's character. I don't like the framing of her as less sympathetic than Quartich (even though a lot of idiots still took it that way which is still on the writing team as well), but I'm glad they understood they had to change the scene. I'm trying to withhold judgement until I see the full arc they intend for her, but as of now I'm not very pleased. She should be the heart of this series if it is to stay it's course as a true love letter to indigenous communities and what has happened to them. I hope they don't forget that.

Hi, I remembered your HC about Spider with cystic fibrosis and I was wondering how you think this situation would affect the Quaritch recom? I mean his thoughts and feelings, maybe he would pull the strings to get Spider new lungs?

ohhhh my gosh, i definitely did make a post about Spider having cystic fribrosis,

to recap this au, spider has CF, he lives on Omaticaya land in a local clinic created basically for him? When he was around 2 years old they found out and Norm pulled some strings to get not only the materials but the needed personnel to take care of him. Mo’at weaved a bag for his nasal cannula which is always on his hip. He grew up in the clinic since they deemed it too dangerous for him to be outside too much. He met the Sully’s while still young, Neytiri was of course hostile at first, but how long can you go being angry at an innocent, chronically ill child before you feel guilty?…. for Neytiri, pretty damn long but she got there. he still loves to climb and do superhuman shit . At first he was extremely reckless bc he undervalued himself but some scoldings and tears for the Sully kids after his actions caught up to him. He started being more delicate about his health.

Now for this ask, this would be him having CF in the canon universe. Oh boy. Lots of neglect on that part, adults always willing to scold him for being reckless but never willing to step up and look after him. especially being on Pandora where getting a lung transplant literally isn’t an option…not for the faint of heart. He came to accept his own mortality, had he been on earth, he probably wouldn’t had gotten a transplant due to overpopulation(longer waiting list) but he would’ve atleast had treatment. Here? i’m a world where he had it constantly push his body and organs to keep up? yea it’s not easy.

The recons at first thought he has using the cannula as an alternative to the mask. A visit to the lab and some blood samples later they find out that it’s not the case. Quaritch feels oddly guilty, he knows it’s a genetic condition, meaning the he was partly at fault for it. The other numbnuts don’t really care if i’ll be honest. They’re shocked Spider survived as long as he did, and lowkey respect it but that’s it. Not much pity or sympathy, it doesn’t really affect them since none of them carry the gene.

Spider let’s his guard down and mentions how he’d never be able to get new lungs in a moment of vulnerability. So Quaritch mentions the possibility of new lungs to one of the lab guys bc he’s a bit of a softie but mostly also wants to use to his advantage. Get the wild child to live you by giving him everything g he desires yknow. But of course, the general hears about it through the grapevine.

General Ardmore tries to bribe him with new lungs, it’s cruel. It’s something Spider had wanted since childhood and now it was so close but so far away too. He’d never betray the Sully’s but it still hurts to turn away everything he ever wanted. Quaritch tries to get him to accept which leads to a huge argument with Spider something like this,

“Fuck off,”

“You don’t t know anything about me, you I’ve been living with this for years, you think I’m that naïve? Fuck you, your general— and your lungs.”

“Get away from me, stop trying to be something for me. You were made in a lab, you’re not my father— you’re the reason I’m like this anyways.”

The words hurts more than Quaritch wants to admit, he realizes that he cares for the kid, his kid.

Summary;

"I saved him." his voice is strained, and cracks at the last syllable.

"What?" and the way Lo'ak looks at him, his eyes are dead, voice empty, he repeats himself, "What did you just say?"

"I saved him - Quaritch, I saved him" The swords seep from his lips like poison, Spider prepares himself for the worst, any reaction is one he would accept, he expects screaming anything. And when Lo'ak's big hands gripped his arms so hard his bones ached, Spider momentarily believed that this would be the end of him, that this was his punishment for saving that monster

"We're not going to tell anyone about this, Spider. Do you hear me? No one can know. Not Kiri, not anyone."

Shock and disbelief hit Spider hard and for a moment all he could do was look at Lo'ak. Loak had his eyes wide open full of something he can't begin to understand- as though he wasn't in his right mind, which was much, much scarier.

"Lo'ak, what are you saying?"

"Never repeat those words ever again, this dies here with us Spider. He says those words with a determination that makes his heart leap out of his chest.

Lo'ak wanted him to lie, about this?

chapter 2 of TG is coming as soon as possible, i rewatched both avatar movies last night a bawled my eyes out, i felt like i had to take a little break to find motivation to write but also to characterize the characters properly, even the ones i despised watching, like Quaritch. There’s also a big research aspect to it because i use Na’vi words, phrases and cultural concepts that aren’t discussed/used in the movies. It’s a lot left to the imagination all while you still have to stay truthful to whatever information you have in canon.

i’m proud to say that i have a better understanding of all the characters now, watching the movies back to back makes you notice the little things, Jake’s perspective on things, how he views himself, his thoughts on humans and relationships with the other characters.

As a person of color watching A1 really helped me grasp how Neytiri feels. The betrayal of her lover. The murder of her sister. The loss of her father but also the loss of a leader along with the destruction of everything she loved. As well as how all of those things accumulated into Quaritch’s character and her distaste for Spider. Her switch from a soft hearted and fierce warrior to a mother who’s lost too much and not enough room room in her heart to forgive or let anyone in (yet).

The kids were very tricky, we haven’t gotten enough of the Sully’s interacting amongst themselves outside of immediate danger so completely grasping their dynamic was hard, but possible. Being a teenager myself it was easier to tap into it. The loss of Neteyam broke me so baddddd. Y’all are gonna be so mad at me when i write his funeral good lord.

Thoughts, lots of them

Jake sees Tommy in his dreams, alsmost in the same way that he sees Neteyam in the Spirit Tree

I think this would because his body is his last link to Tommy so through dreams they commune

He never tells anyone about this

Spider and Mo’at are besties but are very slick about it

Aonung bottles all of his emotions up, like all of them he just ignores them until he just has a mental breakdown out of nowhere

Aonung thinks his parents don’t care for him as much as they do for Tsireya, he never lets it get in the way of their relationship even if it hurts

Rotxo’s heart melts whenever Aonung lets his tough act go (he’s a softy deep inside)

Rotxo cries easily, especially because of his bsf, Aonung once made him a loincloth and gave him trinkets from his collection and he still cries a little when he thinks about it

Kiri lowkey regrets letting Spider and Lo’ak meet, she wants her monkey boy to herself

Kiri and Spider have take naps together on the forest floor or their hide out

they have a hallow tree that they use as a hide out, it has dried food, water, blankets and a flashlight

Spider and Lo’ak have a bunch of secrets taht will forever stay between them, their trust in one another is unshakable

Tuk adores Spider I think she had a bit of a breakdown when she realized she might never see him again

Mo’at loves fries, something about them just does it for her and for that fact alone she’s always asking Norm if he has food with him

-Neytiri can’t decide if it’s better or worse that Spider lost his parents before he knew them. She had time with her father and Sylwanin, time he never got. To love someone is to accept that chance at heartbreak and loss, but neither she nor Spider were given that choice.

AO3 Etiquette -UPDATED

Based on both decent and not so decent replies, I have made some changes to my original post below.

It would seem a whole new kind of AO3 reader/writer is emerging and it is becoming clear not everyone quite understands how the website community works. Here is some basic guidance on how most people expect you to go about using AO3 to keep this a fun community archive that funtions correctly:

As well as likes, kudos is for when the story was interesting enough to make you finish reading. If it sucked or was badly written, you probably left. If you finished it, you liked it - so kudos.

If you really liked it, you should try to comment. It can be long and detailed or a literal keysmash. Writers don't care, we just love comments.

No critisism unless the author has specifically asked or agreed to hear it (so use your notes to say if you want some constructive feedback). Even constructive critisism is a no-no unless an author note tells you it's okay. No, posting it online is not an open invitation for that. Many people write as a fun hobby or a way to cope with, among other things, insecurity and just want to share. Don't ruin that for them. I've seen so many authors just stop writing coz they can't handle the negative emotions the critism brings, and it's only meant to be a fun thing shared for free (pointing out tagging errors is not included in this).

Do not comment to ask the author to write/update something else. It's tacky and off-putting and will probably have the opposite effect than the one you want.

There is no algorithm, it's an archive. Use the search and filter function to add/remove the pairings/characters/tropes etc. you want to read about and it will find you the fics that fit the bill.

For this to work, writers must tag and rate stories. This avoids readers finding the wrong things and missing the stuff they want. I don't care how cringy that trope is in your eyes - it gets tagged.

The tag exception is if you don't want to tag a million things or spoil your story, you can rate it as "chose not to use warnings," and maybe tag the bare minimum.

Don't censor tags. How can someone exclude a tag if the word isn't typed out correctly? There are no content bans for terms so don't censor them.

If the tags are mostly content/trigger warnings, especially if they are things considered very fucked up or graphic, you might want to use "dead dove - do not eat" to ensure people know that you're not messing around with tags and what they get is exactly what you've warned them about.

Character A/Character B means a ROMANTIC or SEXUAL relationship of some kind. Character A&Character B is PLATONIC, like friendship or family.

Nothing is banned. This is an rule because banning one thing is a slipperly slope to banning another and another, until nothing is allowed anymore. Do not expect anyone to censor for you. Because of the tags system, you are responsible for your own reading experience.

People can create new chapters and sequels/fic series any time after they "complete" a story. So it's considered perfectly normal to subscribe, even to a finished story. You can even subscribe to the author instead just to cover your bases.

Do not repost stories or change the publishing date without an extremely good reason (like a complete top to bottom rewrite or an exchange youve written for going public). It's an archive, not social media. No one cares what's the most recent, only what fits their tag needs.

Instead of deleting a story you wrote if you hate it - consider making it anonymous or orphaning it so others can still enjoy it, without it being connected to your name anymore. If you still want to delete it, fair enough.

It's come to my attention that metaworks ARE allowed on AO3, which is something I wasn't aware of. So if you do post an essay or theory, please tag it as such so others can choose to search for it or exclude it. Art is also allowed.

The only reason this archive works is because NON ONE PROFITS. Do not link to your ko-fi or patreon or mention monetary gain in any way or you violate the terms and risk having your account removed. If anyone does link, it leaves the archive open to people claiming it's for profit and having the whole thing removed.

I KNOW there's plenty more I missed but I'm trying to cover most of the basics that people seem to be struggling with.

I invite anyone to add to this, but please explain, don't berate.

Ok so I have 3 projects thats I’m working on right now and I need to pick one to focus on and post first so I’m making a poll.

With You I Am Free- She is a child of Eywa, blessed with the ability to see a persons true essence, and an open mind to everything. She's free, as well as the daughter of a brave Tipani warrior and one of the most renowned craftswoman and palulukan makto of the Anurai clan.

She lives to enjoy the small moments and wonders of her planet. She is young, yet she's sees more than the elders who've lived cycles longer than her. As the new Shaman of Songs she travels and tells the stories of those long gone to all those willing to lend an ear. Meeting Lo'ak doesn't change that. It does however force her to face feelings she didn't know she could feel as she finds herself infatuated by him.

Take This to the Grave- What if Spider told Lo'ak about what he did? What if he and Lo'ak vow to keep it a secret? No matter how much they have to lie or who they have to deceive. How will they navigate the all the lies they will have to tell? How will they handle deceiving their entire family? Will they grow to resent eachtoher? Or will this shared sin only make their love for eachother grow to be be unconditional?

Spider, Out- Spider keeps video logs over the years, starting from age 6, up until his death. (he dies earlier than everyone in this one, after all, he’s a human and I would imagine it’s the same way as how athletes retire very early, except he doesn’t and that leads to his demise at the age of 27)

Headcanon time

Neytiri goes back to the old hometree whenever she updates her song cord and sings it with a little more added each time

Neteyam named his ikran seze, not knowing what that meant to Neytiri, so now she takes extra care of his ikran, the kids have no idea why

Spider cries when he's mad, like blind rage mad there's definitely some water wakes afterwards, mostly because he doesn't have an outlet for that anger. Especially if he's mad at a Na'vi, first of all it's an unlikely victory and if he does fight then it'll give them more reasons to hate him(being human and all)

Tuk cried to Kiri about how left out she feels due to the age gap between her and her siblings which is why Kiri always defends her when Lo'ak gets a bit mean

ngl i wanna see this, Lo’ak and Spider formulating a plan for whenever Quaritch shows up again, never say anything. Like we’re gaslighting to the max here, even when alone with Quaritch he never ever admits to what he did. Just like in court, anything you say, can and will be used against you. These guys have no way of knowing that Quaritch is telling the truth, hell, Lo’ak and Spider can just say he’s a clone.

Is this immoral? Absolutely. But who cares?? Like this is a secret that they will take the actual graves. I want to see how this would deepen their relationship, the guilt, anger everything would would get turned up a notch. Like this adds such a sense of gravity to everything that could happen moving forward. There’s room for romance? You could go the blood brothers route too. This would be like Lo’ak helping him cover up his crime(sort of) they’d be lying to everyone, especially if Quaritch is here for the long run, a burning sense of unease.

Imagine the impending threat because they know Quaritch is coming back. The accusations, the lies, the covering up. Jake realizing that Quaritch might actually not be lying???

When Lo'ak's big hands gripped his arms so hard his bones ached, Spider momentarily believed that this was the end of him, that this was his punishment for saving that monster. He was going to die at the hands of his best friend, his brother.

Shock and disbelief hit Spider hard and for a moment all he could do was look at Lo'ak. Lo'ak, who have their eyes wide open and he doesn't seem to be in his right mind, which is much scarier.

“Lo'ak and, what are you saying?”

“Lo'ak, you are not making any sense!! Jake needs this, Neytiri and...”

Lo'ak shakes him with such a frenzy that his brain slams into his skull.

“You are crazy, skowng? Are you crazy or do you have a death wish? They will kill you, or banish you! Forget! This stays between us. Did you understand?”

Spider can't answer anything.

Spider blinks a few times and after analyzing his brother's face well, he responds softly.
