Hi, sorry I been a bit busy to respond at the time I wanted to but I'm pretty sure I explained the white supremacy and the sexualization of Terry as a trans man enough but I also wanted to say here that like.... Terry's skintone is horrendous too, like yes black people can have less saturation in the skin but with Terry it makes him look extremely ashy and the artist is not very good at drawing afro-centric features which is objectively bad when you are drawing black people 😭

genuinely thank you so much for making that post on Baxter's whole Thing. i was genuinely kind of worried i was the only one who thought that it was kind of fucked up that baxter's whole upbringing and its consequences isn't really ever explored and just kind of brushed aside as "oh they're silly little bigots don't think too hard about it".

honestly i have a lot of issues with Baxter's DLC and some of his character to an extent, it all just feels like... undercooked i guess is the best way to describe it, like Kab didn't think too hard about the implications of having an LI be brought up by white supremacists and the kind of things he'd be likely to internalize from that. genuinely i can only hope that Kab's learned from this and is going to try her damndest to do better because i genuinely love the OL series and its characters despite them having some pretty troubling flaws and issues that go unexamined, the games have been a source of comfort for me recently and it's kind of worrying for many of these issues to just kind of go unadressed in a pair of otherwise pretty good games

And it sucks because personally I really liked what we got from the wedding dlc of baxter and I made a lot of mcs of color to romance and befriend him but when I read that I was like "I cannot in good faith put my mcs around him" because it was so explicit bout the bigotry but so vague in the implications of what he'd internalize and it never got brought up if he unlearned all that. Which took me out of his character so hard

Like OL helped me cope with losing all my belongings in a house fire and i love the game but people act like critiquing the game is horrible when criticism is used to help devs like Kab to get better and take that criticism so it doesnt happen again in the future

You are so lucky I got the time to correct you because someone politely asked what was wrong with Terry's design and I fully intended to answer them before you came in with this. Saying this is a bad take about a post critiquing racism and transphobia by a trans black person is to be frank, the most braindead and ignorant take I have ever fucking heard. If you took more than a few minutes to process this, you would notice that Terry is literally wearing a women's fit with clothing folds focusing on accentuating those features, men's clothing by the way does Not do this if you were curious. The shirt as indicated by the folds is hanging onto his his chest and hips and there is no reason to add so many crotch folds if the outfit was baggy. Every time I show Terry's design to my trans men friends they are all disgusted and appalled that this was allowed in game. It was obvious that the artist didn't take any care or consideration to portraying Terry as a man like he did with Derek and Cove and that's the issue. Not all trans men are going to have a 6 pack but there are ways of drawing trans men without sexualizing parts of them that would make actual trans men playing uncomfortable. (That's not even going into how desaturated and ashy and simply devoid of actual afro-centric features Terry has but that's another conversation.)

Also I can clearly tell you don't actually care about people of color cause the issue with Baxter's parents isn't that their portrayed at all. The issue is that their not portrayed with the severity that those sort of conversations need, you can't throw out a one-liner of "Oh I cut them off after college cause they were super bigoted" without having a serious conversation, it will alienate players of color because yes Kab has mentioned homophobia before but the line was about Pamela and Noelani being comfortable with wearing their rings in public, not that they were afraid of being hatecrimed in their small town for being gay. There's a difference of being vague and being explicit (the latter of which Kab was with Baxter's parents) and the truth is, Kab didn't add that line to make Baxter more complex and give us a better look at his character, otherwise there would have been a much needed longer conversation about it. She added it so people can say Baxter is a good guy when that is the bare minimum, people should cut off their bigoted parents. Also, adding it in the fist place throws players of color from fully immersing themselves in the game which is an extremely shitty thing to do and just truly kills people from being as invested in Baxter when everyone should have the experience to like Baxter without worrying about bigotry. You making this post doesn't make sense to me, you could have easily just asked me a question if you were truly confused or taken it to DMs if you were really confused. Instead of being honest about your confusion, you decided to take the path of ignorance and say this is a "bad take" because you couldn't understand why I said what said and instead came for my character, saying I am transphobic when I am trans myself and how I need media literacy when this is literally a criticism post. Go do research and learn instead of trying to be racist and transphobic on my fucking post.

For example:

The inclusion of white supremacy through one of the LI's parents

Cliff never having a set enthicity and therefore letting people decide what race Cove should be so they dont have to worry about confronting their feelings on dating a mixed man

I can go on and on about this, but you can enjoy a game and criticize aspects of it that wasn’t handled well. You should, at the very least, be neutral on when people criticize those aspects because each criticism is an improvement that the devs can take forward to their next games

is the existence of the wards really an issue? i always thought it was more world building than anything. we never meet or talk to the wards and and baxter obviously doesnt share their ideals so. yea the supremacy exists but is it a flaw if we never see it personally? it feels more like world building than a flaw in the story to me so im wondering if thats wrong. people wanting to know more about them tho is fucked up and weird and kab should stop responding to them, even if shes just saying she wont answer those questions.

Yes, it is a flaw, and it's a major one because you are forgetting about one particular little thing.

Despite what tumblr might have taught you, a significant part of Our Life's playerbase is not white.

I have met so many people of different backgrounds through this fandom, but you know what tends to be a common link for them?

"Yeah, I like Baxter or think he's alright, but I can never finish his DLC cause of his family and how uncomfortable it made me"

This has become quite the sore spot among the community, especially with black and brown players because why would you bring such an awful topic up through one of your own LIs. It doesn't add anything to the story, the one conversation it's brought up in doesn't explain why exactly he cut them off besides just "oh because they were bigots teehee" when those sort of conversations Need to be fully explored in order to be conveyed well because otherwise you're tackling on the fact that Baxter could have easily internalized those white supremacist values. We need to know what he did to unlearn them, but in a game like Our Life, why bring it up then if you're not going to explain it in depth.

So that brings the question of whose comfort was this inclusion for? It's not for black or brown players. It's not for Muslim or Jewish players. And sure as fuck it ain't gay people. White people who are born majorly christian in their beliefs? Most likely, because they won't feel targeted by these people, but in a game that's main selling point is supposed to be safe for LGBT+ people and people of color, they sure as hell decided to alienate a good chunk of their playerbase for white people who didn't need that comfort.

It's a stupid inclusion that didn't need to be in the game. Everyone before the initial beta of that section was released thought his parents were just helicopter parents who just sucked and that was fine? But making them white supremacists??? It's so obvious she wanted to include something like this but gave it no nuance and how it would affect the player's views on Baxter.

TLDR, if you're not going to make a poignant point in your stories to actively be ten toes into explaining white supremacy and how your LI had to unlearn it due to being raised by white supremacists then you shouldn't include it point blank. The fact that hasn't been taken out yet proves to me that Kab really thought it's fine and is not trying to make Baxter's route a safe playthrough for people of color like Cove and Derek are.
