She visited with President Franklin Roosevelt, becoming the first Soviet citizen to be welcomed at the White House. Afterward, Eleanor Roosevelt asked Lyudmila to accompany her on a tour of the country and tell Americans of her experiences as a woman in combat. “Egyptian Blue”, my second in a brand new series that’ll focus on the history behind color pigments.

Egyptian Blue was first manufactured around 2500 BC, and although it was incredibly tricky to make (specific temperature and oyxgen levels in the firing of a glassy solid) it was easy to work with and remained popular for a long time.

Recently it’s made a revival after the discovery that it (calcium copper silicate) can be broken down into “nano sheets” that produce infrared radiation. After falling into disuse for a few thousand years, it’s now being used in new medical imaging devices.
