FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Fundraiser to save the steeple at St. Anthony's Parish
St. Anthony's is looking to raise $280,000 by the end of 2012 to help repair its tower that closed two years ago due to falling masonry and noticeable cracks. The bells in the tower were silenced last year.
The Parish brought in the engineering firm, Pujara Wirth Torke Inc. of Elm Grove to asses the tower. They found the tower to be in serious need of repairs. Krause Konstruction has been asked to permanently repair and stabilize the entire tower and steeple, along with the reshingling the steeple roof.
In six weeks, over $115,000 has been raised with most of the money coming from parishioners. Various businesses in Menomonee Falls have pledged their support for the steeple.
St. Anthony's hosted an organ concert in October and a Chili Night on December 1st to help with the money raising efforts.
Those looking to donate can mail their donation to St. Anthony Save Our Steeple, St. Anthony Congregation, N74W13604 Appleton Avenue, Menomonee Falls, WI  53051. A Tax deductible donations can be made through the parish’s secure site by clicking on “Donate Now” link on the home page of www.stanthony-parish.org or on its Facebook fan page www.facebook.com/stanthonymenofalls.
Other options for donations include purchasing the Parish has St. Anthony keepsake calendars and St. Anthony notecards that will be available for sale.

Bring it to the big screen.
Before you begin reading, go grab some popcorn. I am about to explain some movie pitches about Marquette that will make you feel like you're physically at the movies. Each pitch fits one of the seven basic types of stories from Ad Week. Make sure you do not forget the butter.
Most students at Marquette believe athletes are living the dream. This includes the basketball players. They get gifts from sponsors, meals every day, and are treated like celebrities by other students. However, I would want to show the life of these basketball players outside of their basketball schedule. The movie pitch would be a story of rebirth. It would show that these players are just as normal as any other student on campus.
I would focus on two or three of the most known players, because the more famous they are, the more people will think they are treated like celebrities. I would interview them asking what they like to do outside of basketball and show some highlights from these videos. I would capture footage of them doing these other various activities. I would show videos of them studying and putting in just as much hard work as the other students on campus. My goal would to be introducing the "non-basketball" side to students.
My second video pitch would focus on the College of Communication. The stereotype of a Communication student is that we are lazy and do not get homework. It is considered the "easy major." This video would be characterized as overcoming the monster and showing that Communication students work hard.
My video would include videos of all of the different things Communication students do for assignments, such as MU radio, MUTV, and the Marquette Journal. It would show the dedication the students have to their activities with how much time is put into these projects with fast moving clips. I would also interview about three or four students to get some quotes on what it is like to be a Communication student and what things are expected of them.
My third video pitch would be the rags to riches story of the Gold 'N Blues. They have no always been known as one of the best acapella groups on campus. Their first year, they hardly had enough people to make a song. No one on campus knew who the group was. However, now Gold 'N Blues is not as unfamiliar.
The video would capture the growth of the group. I would include songs from their original starting group and songs they are starting to perform now. I would show clips from their performances and make sure to show how attendance has grown with each show. I would interview a member that has been in the group for four years and ask them about the similarities and differences between this year's group and the original group.
All of these stories would provide an insider look into some of the things happening on Marquette's campus.

More important lessons.
This time we did not have a speaker in class; we had two speakers. I enjoyed listening to Arlene McCrehan and Mary Henige. They were able to bounce ideas off one another and provide us with important information not only for writing, but also for the business world.
Since McCrehan and Henige both work with social  media, I was curious if they dealt with all of it, including the negative comments. I asked them if they ignored those customers that bashed on their company. "You have to deal with it head on," McCrehan said, "you must give an explanation." Both women expressed the importance of letting the customer know you heard them, and you want to make it better in any way possible.
They answered a lot of questions about interviewing for a job or how to be prepared for an interview. I appreciated all of this advice because I will be entering the job market in the Spring. I had to choose the two pieces of advice that resonated with me the most.
McCrehan and Henige stressed the importance of networking when searching for a new job. They said that persistence is a way to get you noticed. Henige recommended signing up for a LinkedIn profile. They think you will succeed if you get your name into the field and get discovered.
The last piece of advice from both women was how to write a successful press release. McCrehan said that you need to be clear and concise. People do not want to be digging for the information. Henige agreed and mentioned that you need to humanize the release. You need to evoke emotion from the audience.
The women had important advice to bring to our class about writing and entering the business world. They inspired me to get working on my networking for a job after I am done with school. And let me tell you, not many people get me that motivated.

A full meal at Milwaukee Public Market.
No matter what you're craving, you will find it at the Milwaukee Public Market. There is something there that will satisfy your needs. The best part is, the food is amazing.
I visited three of the vendors and tried what they had to offer. I decided to test out a full meal. I ordered a salad, a drink, and desert. I did not even have to go outside to complete my meal. Seriously, this place is awesome.
My dinner entailed a salad from "The Green Kitchen". They make your salad exactly how you want it. Their selection of extras, over fifty vegetables to be exact, to put on the salad is overwhelming, but in the best way possible. Their new wraps are the gaining interest, but the "salads are the most popular item on the menu" stated the worker.
Tumblr media
I usually shy away from salads because I never feel full, but this salad was the perfect amount. I did not feel the need to change out of my jeans, which is a big deal for me and my eating habits.
A drink to accompany my salad was necessary. I walked over to "Thief Wine Shop and Bar" for a glass of wine. There were wines from all over the world. I asked the bartender for a recommendation, but she confessed she would not be of much help. "We change our list every six to eight weeks," she explained, and they just changed the list.
Tumblr media
I spotted a Pinot Grigio on the menu and decided that would be my best bet. My sample glass of Tommasi 2011 "Le Rosse" Pinot Grigio was refreshing and smooth. The owners from California prove the California wine stereotype; these people know great wine.
Tumblr media
To finish my full meal, I walked over to C. Adam's Bakery. I asked the girl about their most popular item. She handed me a cake pop, for free! I always thought my grandmother was the best baker in the world, but this vendor could give her a run for her money.
Since it is fall, the bakery is transitioning to more pumpkin flavored items. The bakers in the back get to experiment with new recipes, so there is always something new being sold up front. C. Adam's Bakery still sticks to it's roots by baking Milwaukee Brewers and Green Bay Packers cookies. This place has the right thing to give your sweet tooth a fix.
Tumblr media
The Milwaukee Public Market is a great place to go when you are not sure what you want to eat. I promise you, they will provide you with what you want. And the chances of you running in to me have greatly increased since finishing my full meal.

Reading is a hot topic.
I find it amazing that every speaker that comes to class has new advice for our class. Who knew there was so much to know about writing?
Jim Nelson covered some similar topics to our previous speakers, but I liked his reasoning for his advice. They were reasons that none of the other speakers covered.
To start, my favorite piece of advice was to not read in bed. I will be completely honest in saying that I love to read in bed. But, I usually fall asleep while reading. Nelson said we must develop good reading habits. We need to absorb what we are reading. "Reading in bed is like eating while standing up," Nelson said. Your mind and your body cannot take in the information or substances when you are not in the proper position.
Next, Nelson, told us to be conscience of the changes in the industry. We need to know how and where a story is presented along with other possible ways to access the story. This may include iPhones or iPads. Regardless of the channel used, we must make sure the story is available to all users.
Last, Nelson brings up the topic of reading. All of our speakers have mentioned reading in some context. Nelson told us to always read because he finds reading to be an important way to find out how we want to be writers. We can view others' styles and develop our own based on them. He believes you will become a better writer when you read more.
Nelson also mentioned that being nice can get you very far. So do not forget to put a smile on your face. :)

Finding your inner photographer.
I had dreams to be a photographer when I wasn't even in middle school yet. I always stole the camera from my mom and took pictures. She would be angry any time she came back from getting the pictures printed. I can't blame her, my pictures didn't scream professional.
I still enjoy taking pictures. I would rather let my pictures do the talking than write an essay about something. However, making meaning out of pictures is something I have not mastered. Luckily, Ben Smidt gave our class some insider tips on photography.
One major point Ben told us was to be careful with lighting. It can hurt and help. Quality light is necessary for a picture to succeed. It should help give meaning to the whole picture.
Tumblr media
Layering pictures can make a picture interesting and add more character. This means having something in the foreground, something in the middle, and something in the background. It is important to try and keep distracting items (such as light poles and garbage cans) out of the layers in order to produce a crisp and clean picture.
Tumblr media
Color makes a picture pop. It grabs the viewers attention. Colors can also create more character for the picture. Fall is a great time for pictures with all the changing colors on the leaves.
Tumblr media
While using some of these tips, maybe people will actually confuse me for a professional photographer. Or I can just show my mom I know what I am doing with a camera.

Bornstein Promotes Change Through Journalism
This week, social journalist, David Bornstein, lectured Marquette students, faculty, and community members on the virtues of solution journalism, a hybrid form of journalism that focuses more on covering solutions rather than covering problems.
“I always say to people think of 10 problems in the world, and then I tell them to think of 10 solutions,” said Bornstein. “It always much easier for us to name the problems.”
Bornstein’s lecture urged young people to consider a new way of thinking to solve these world problems. He gives lectures to people who he believes can be the difference.
Bornstein credits an interest in social entrepreneurism as the inspiration behind the development in solution journalism. Bornstein who formerly wrote about solutions for the New York Times, now has his work published on the website he founded dowser.org.
On his blog, Bornstein has written about topics such as the nurse-family partnership, the microfinance Grameen Bank and a program which builds wells in Brazil with cheap electricity.
Bornstein shows that journalism tends to have the reputation of exposing bad news. “It’s people doing remarkable things that are hidden from view,” Bornstein said as he finished his lecture. He wants these remarkable things to be emphasized as the solutions to the world’s problems.

One of my favorite movies just got even better.
Tumblr media
My roommate and I were sitting here watching A League of Their Own, something we often do, and as Stillwell Angel ran up and covered the bus driver’s eyes she told me, “You should make a GIF of that that cuts to the bus from Speed.”
“OK,” I said.

What could a girl know about sports?
I could summarize Becky up in one word: awesome. This girl knows the sports writing industry inside and out. She admits that it wasn't easy being a girl in the sports field, but some of her most important pieces of advice came from this obstacle. You can tell she grew tough skin from her years as a reporter.
Becky covered areas all over the writing spectrum. I am having a hard time picking her three most important pieces of advice. But, I have narrowed it down based on things I found to be the most interesting and influential to me.
First, Becky reminded us that mistakes happen. Sure, we hear this when we are little and spill our cranberry juice on the white carpet. But, when we're talking about your career and credibility, mistakes appear scarier when brought up by your boss rather than your mom. She said that "there is always tomorrow" and we need to learn to let things go. The best thing you can do is learn from that mistake and move on.
Second, Becky talked about the importance of AP style. She told us why it is used; AP style allows us to give out information quickly. She believes that it is beneficial for us to become familiar with it because it cane be applied to wherever you work. It sounds like I won't be able to avoid AP style like I had hoped freshman year.
Third, Becky mentioned writing from the angle of human interest. Stories can start to sound the same after a while, so writers need to find ways to keep their readers involved. On the other side of this, the writer needs to be fully invested in the story. This will create a more interesting story instead of just the facts. It will give the story flavor and character.
I would like to say one more thing because I am answering the question of "is there anything else I would like to add". At the end, Becky told us to keep writing. It seems that this is a common theme among all of these speakers that came to class. They tell us to keep writing, and that writing is a process. I am taking this more seriously because I hate when people read my work. I don't believe I am a good writer. However, it sounds like if I keep writing, I will get better. Let's hope all of these speakers are right.

Can you be my grandpa?
You haven't seen adorable until you've met Paul Salsini. However, the man has some brains too! Talk about a good combo.
Paul taught me great information about writing, but there were three areas that I found the most useful. And I will share those three areas with you because, well, I have to for a grade.
First, Paul emphasized the importance of writing simply. He said it over and over again when he presented. This is something that I need to remember because I tend to use lengthy sentences. I think that I need bubbly words to keep the audience interested. Now I know that this tends to take away from the core part of my writing.
Second, Paul brought up immediately that grammar is not dead. Our generation is used to shortening things to speed up communication. Still, writing will not succumb to our technological ways. We must perfect our grammar in order for people to understand our writing and to take us seriously.
Third, Paul spoke about how important observation is for interviews. What the people say is important, but so is their appearance and their mannerisms. The clothes a person wears says something about them. Their actions say something about them. These details that the interviewer notices gives him/her insight the interviewee might not say.
With all of these writing tips, I am hoping to improve my posts! But, I'll let you be the judge of that.

I'm actually learning things in school.
First and foremost, I would like to thank Mykl for making me feel like I am now a genius on tumblr. His presentation on explaining how to use tumblr (unwrapping.tumblr.com) was awesome. The man really knows what he's doing. If only I could actually take his brain so I would remember everything he said. Unfortunately, that seems to be something the future holds.
Anyways, there were three things that completely stuck out to me on what were important tools for tumblr.
First, you MUST use tags. Mykl mentioned that only 10% of tumblr users put tags on their posts. How crazy is that? Tags seem to be the simplest way to get followers and let others know they probably have an interest in what you are posting. The best part is you get to decide what you want to tag and exactly how many you want connected to your post. Ah, the power.
Second, be aware of your publish options. Mykl recommended that we do not use the publish now option because writing is a process; your post should be worked on time and time again. You also do not want to post too frequently. There happens to be a thing called courtesy on here, even if it does not seem to exist in the real world anymore. You can set up your posts to be posted at certain times of the day. Tumblr is like my new personal assistant.
Third, you can send your drafts to someone for feedback. When your post is saved as a draft, you receive a special hyperlink to your post that no one can see unless given the link. Everyone needs help once in a while right? Well, I do all the time. And I don't see that being any different with tumblr.
And know I will use what I learned and save this as a draft. Practice what you preach.

Meet Frances: A girl in love with France
Class brought me to meeting a girl named Frances today. Even though we just met, I think I know some pretty interesting things about this girl. At first glance, she appears creative and enjoyable. After interview questions, these first impressions stand true. She told me about her summer that was filled with concerts- Train, Mat Kearney, and The Head and the Heart, to name a few. All of the concerts joined together to create a mini Summerfest in Minnesota, her home. Continuing with the music theme of her summer, Frances also went to a Coldplay concert. She deemed herself not a die-hard Coldplay fan, but recalled the concert as an “epic lightshow.”
Frances is currently studying Public Relations and French. Two interesting things came from this information.
First: her pet peeve. Although she is questioning her major, Frances cannot handle bad advertisements. It does not matter the method in which the ads are produced, even though she thinks that the worst ones are on television. She even had examples to provide of some terrible advertisements. In her opinion, bad advertisements are ones that make “no emotional connection” to the viewer. And what is even worse is people are getting paid big bucks to put out “crap” like that.
Second: her connection to French. Yes, she is studying French at Marquette and her name is Frances, but her connection goes much deeper. Her interest was born when her mother traveled a lot and visited France and continued to grow when her grandparents took her all over the country before eighth grade. These early childhood connections are still present in Frances today. She told me she is even considering about moving there for a few years to work in Paris. Her dream job would be in the field of communications or Public Relations. She finds experiencing different cultures and having a global look at the world exciting. However, the country cannot keep her forever. Frances said she eventually would want to “come back to {her} roots” to raise a family.

Favorite Writing-Themed Accounts
Tumblr. I find you extremely intimidating. Not only because you are missing an "e", but because you are yet another social media channel that I have to get addicted to. However, I think we will become very good friends. So, here's to our new beginning.
Anyways, it took me a solid twenty minutes to even decide who I wanted to follow. With much consideration and concentration, I have chosen the three writing-themed accounts I like the most. First, I follow The New York Times (@nytimes) on twitter. I cannot say that I read every single thing that is posted by them, but I am working on being more informed about the world. Plus it's an easier way than picking up a newspaper. And hey, I think I seem smart when I follow them- judge me. Next, the one and only Tucker Max (@tuckermax) aka the world's biggest ass. Can I say that on here? Either way the man provides great entertainment and makes you feel like you're the sweetest person walking this planet. Lastly, I am following an account called sharing poetry. I absolutely love poetry so I figured this would be my easiest way to find it without searching too hard! Well, that seems to be all for now. Until next time.
