Okay in all seriousness. There's something that I REALLY want to talk about as an open discussion with the fandom, but. This is not going to be a very nice thing to hear/talk about.

It's about how Gonta is treated by the fandom.

As a fan of all the V3 characters now, and as someone who has always been a fan of Gonta, and as someone who has many mental disabilities and two diagnosed neurodivergancies... I'm tired of playing nice about it.

You all need to stop being ableist towards Gonta.

I've mentioned in the past that I don't like shitting on personal interpretations. I don't like saying something is or is not canon because narration is just a big web of text that you try to decipher with your own personal biases, experiences, and thoughts. That's why two literary analysts analyzing the same text with the same literary criticism rules can come to wildly different conclusions--why people develop different headcanons from the same canonical information.

But one of the things that challenged my integrity is just how many people view Gonta as this innocent, naive, ignorant, baby boy who can do no harm/never has a complicated/dirty/violent/sexual thought in his life ever.

This incredibly ableist interpretation of the character bothered me for, well, obvious reasons (See: It's fucking ableist, need I say more?) but I never challenged it as harshly as I am now because to be frank, it's not my place to tell people how to HC a character. It still isn't. But I've pretty much given up on my integrity on the subject and have decided to go all in on discussing why this interpretation of Gonta is just. Really bad.

First of all, not to promote my own analyses here or anything, but I think this analysis I did of Gonta explains a LOT in regards to the ableism the cast gives him in canon. I also think that this subtle ableism is why the fandom is so bad with Gonta's characterization in headcanons and fanfic--because they've seen how the cast treats him, and they think it's normal. They don't see the microaggressions, they don't see the subtle ableism in the cast--they just see this big giant idiot who speaks like Tarzan in the English version (which... I don't actually know why people assume Tarzan (Thinking of Disney's version) is stupid. Like as a boy he had to reinvent the spear with no one to guide him on how to do it. He was able to strategize and outsmart "civilized" men in the final showdown. Still I digress) and don't see the literal genius behind his social awkwardness.

There is also another very important point I'm going to make in addition to this, and it's going to be very uncomfortable to Gonta fans who insist he's nothing but a sweet baby who only has pure thoughts. Especially to the fans who insist he "can't be sexual" or think it's weird to ship him with his peers.

Sorry to burst your bubble, but... Gonta blatantly has sexual desire and gets horny right in canon.

This is further clarified here:

It wasn't a matter of Gonta didn't want to touch her because touching someone in their underwear was inappropriate, or being flustered because she was in her underwear which is inappropriate...

It was literally a "weird feeling" that made him unable to approach her or touch her. A "weird feeling" that Miu makes pretty obvious as to what it was--sexual arousal.

He literally was sexually attracted to and felt sexual arousal from looking at Miu in her underwear. He had sexual feelings and thoughts about Miu. Why?

Because Gonta is a young man.

Gonta is a brilliant, talented young man who has normal human thoughts for someone his age--sexual desires, upsetting thoughts, complicated thoughts, ectect. He is not a child, he is not mentally stunted (I've been informed that people have literally said this on Ao3 for the NSFW Gonta fics, please for the love of god stop that)

I think the reason why Gonta fans typically want to keep him as a "pure baby child who can do no wrong" is because treating him like the young adult that he is makes it harder for them to justify Chapter 4. Every time I've seen a Gonta fan that hates Kokichi, it's always followed by the sentiment of "Kokichi manipulated and abused Gonta into killing Miu, so it's all Kokichi's fault." They're afraid of nuance and liking a character with the grey morality of genuinely thinking Mercy Killing the cast is a viable option, because it challenges their own morals about the character they adore.

To those people who read this and are upset: You can and should like Gonta! Gonta is a magnificent character who showcases the subtle way microaggressions can manifest and hurt people, he's a good-hearted person and a literal genius, he cares deeply for his friends and loves everyone with upmost sincerity.

But.

You need to re-evaluate your stance on Gonta if you think he's a stupid, naive fool who Kokichi manipulated. You need to re-evaluate why you think those thoughts, why you think Gonta being shipped with anyone is "Kinda weird" or "has weird consent problems" or "give you the ick." You have to challenge yourself and ask yourself uncomfortable questions in regards to why you treat Gonta like a child when canon has proven otherwise, why you think he cannot have violent or sexual thoughts, why he can't think mercy killing his class is the only way to save them.

This isn't an attack on you--but understand that these specific takes on Gonta? They are ableist in nature. They belittle and dismiss him, they treat him like a child, an idiot who can't think for himself--and you have to come to terms with the fact that Gonta is a far more complex character with complicated thoughts and feelings who is a young adult. Not a child. A young adult.

So again, ask yourself this: Why are you treating this young adult like he's a toddler?

Saiouma pining but they're musicans

the original au concept for this involved my hc oc filled friend group for Shuichi and my version of DICE, but y'all can use whoever you want

anywho- basically the idea is Shuichi and Kokichi have their own bands comprised of their friends that they're the lead singers of, and they're both part of the line up for a music festival. neither have heard of the other before but after Kokichi's interest was piqued by Shuichi's band's name on the schedule, he decided to look them up- almost instantly getting his gay ass knocked off his feet seeing Shuichi in the photos of the band

Kokichi then made it his goal to interact with them at some point during the festival and ended up succeeding back stage after Shuichi's band had finished their set. during this interaction both find themselves trying really hard not to look like total idiots infront of the other, Kokichi because hmbgnngb prebby hot man and Shuichi because he's experiancing imposter syndrom interacting with another music artist (and also he's cute, but the imposter syndrom is overriding the simpage)

Shuichi ends up verbally stumbling over himself the whole time and walking away feeling like he made a horrible impression, and Kokichi managed to save face and walked away a bigger simp than he was already becuase holy shit he's pretty and shy!

after some frendly banter and jabbing from his bandmate, Shuichi finds out that during their convorsation Kokichi manage to slip a paper into his jacket pocket with his number on it, which results in that other simpping part of Shuichi to finally surface.

you can do whatever you wish with how this goes from here, but if you're curious about how me and my friend continued it: we decided they's start talking via text for a good while, becoming closer as they do and simping along the way- buuuut they're also keeping their bandmates updated and the bands are screaming in exasperation at them because it's so violently clear they're flirting with one another, but saiouma refuse to believe the feelings are mutual.

All of this has allowed the characters to come to life before the audience’s very eyes! “See, there’s a special little agreement that one must sign before the game that’s part of the audition contract! It gives the Player the option to keep all of the artificial junk that Team Danganronpa stuffed into their head under the condition that they win! It’s an optional prize, but who wouldn’t want to keep their very own—very special—Super High School Level talent!?” A single checkbox makes Shuichi Saihara’s world spin. A single check mark makes Kokichi Ouma’s world break. --- Or, the killing game ends, but not everyone is back where they started.

After six years(?), I have finally returned to rewrite my post-game, saiouma fic which you can read [here].

The story follows, Shuichi Saihara after the events of V3. He discovers that the killing game was all a virtual reality simulation and all of his friends are alive, except anyone who didn't survive til the end AND sign off on keeping their in-game memories before the game has been reverted to their pre-game state.

It's a story of self-discovery in the wake of an identity crisis sprinkled in with the frustrating romance of two teenage boys!

It's been an arduous five months of work, but I've come to deliver 60K+ words to you, dear reader! Even if you have already read this fic in the past, I would strongly encourage you to give it a once-over/another chance. I have VASTLY improved the pacing, plot, characterization, and grammar, and I'm quite proud with what I've been able to create! I used to be very insecure with my writing style but in the past six(?) years, I have improved in both my confidence and prose.

Give it a shot, leave a comment, and just let me know what you think! Any and all feedback is greatly appreciated and I hope to continue working on this after taking a bit of a writing break! :D

Like. People are freaked out, the world is in a state of uncertainty, and your job is to deliver news. So you have to tell people about the enigmatic broadcast that, in a single day, has claimed the lives of beloved pop idol Sayaka Maizono...

...and world-famous international supermodel Junko Enoshima.

This is a dark day for entertainment fandoms. But you get through it. You deliver the news. The world mourns. Your station hosts a memorial event for these two young women taken too soon. Their faces are plastered all over the place. People doing street art of them. The network runs a marathon of their televised appearances.

In another episode of "SDR2 localization does it again" a particular translation that has been bothering me is this one:

While the translation is not totally wrong there are some things that were translated on a really strange way and I feel like they can greatly affect how the reader interprets this scene.

The "huh? Even hajime hates me now?" Is almost the same in the original and there's no really much of a difference, but when we talk about the next line the translation really does change a lot of things, "That stings... I felt you and I were quite similar" Is not an exact way of translating this line. In first place while the "that stings" part is not a mistranslation, is not the way I would personally translate it "それはちょっと傷付くな" corresponds more accurately to "that hurts a little bit/that kind of hurts", "傷付く" literally meaning to get hurt emotionally or physically. The reason why I think this translation while not incorrect is not the best is because using "that stings" makes lt feel more impersonal but it could be the fact I'm not native on English that makes it feel that way for me.

While that line is not the best translation in my opinion, the next translation does make a lot of significant and even angering changes. "I felt you and I were quite similar" Is not quite the meaning of that line, it actually means "I felt close to Hinata-kun" "親近感" doesn't mean feeling similarity to someone it means the feeling of closeness, affinity or kinship and to my knowledge it can't mean feeling similarity. Basically the original line means something more close to: "That hurts a little bit... I felt a closeness to Hinata-kun"

As we can see the translation changed a really important line and completely erased the fact that is mentioned that Komaeda felt a feeling of closeness/affinity to Hinata, something that would be very important for the reader to analyze his emotions about him. I want to end this by saying that I find really angering how the translation always decide to change something really important or vital about the interactions of Komaeda and Hinata and while I could attribute that to the translation being one of really poor quality when I see so many instances and coincidences it almost seems like something intentional. Also if I made any mistake pointing out the meaning of this sentences feel free to correct me and let me know.

answer: ouma spends a not insignificant amount of effort throwing himself at saihara in canon (to varying degrees of un/success) so i just like to live in a world where he enjoys the fruits of his labors

more serious answer: his dialogues in main story + FTE + love suite are a constant series of challenges & invitations to saihara, even if saihara doesn't always pick up on or accept them. given that plus saihara's passive nature/general preference to follow versus lead, i think it's easy to see ouma as an initiator in the relationship, as obfuscated and overly engineered as his methods are... intention matters quite a bit to ouma, whose whole thing is parsing meaning from uncertainty. so in more benign situations where there's space to build trust and verify interest (salmon mode) he goes all in, and backs off when he can't (love hotel).

imagine Shuichi admiting to Kokichi he trusts him and feels like he's the only one he can truely be himself around. imagine how hard that'd blindsight Kokichi- how much it'd fluster him.

imagine this is pre-dating and Kokichi not knowing what to do with the fact his crush feels that way around him. imagine Shuichi only admiting this because he's in love with Kokichi and was about to confess but backed out and told him that secrete instead.

imagine the flustered struggle they both go through after that trying to bite back their feelings for one another to "act normal" about it

In this gloomy postgame VR AU, a lonely Kokichi navigates his new life as a famous, filthy-rich, and incredibly traumatized Danganronpa star. An invitation from Team Danganronpa brings with it another chance for Kokichi to meet with his estranged classmates, but there’s a sinister mystery lurking in the shadows…. BeachyPeachy’s attention to detail with this fic is amazing. Not only is the worldbuilding well-structured and unique, but the prose is wonderfully poetic and the choices that the characters make leading up to and during the story feel realistic to their situations and personalities. Somehow, there’s even room for full-on character analyses that fit seamlessly into the story. Interactions between Shuichi and Kokichi happen later on in the story, and as the fic is unfinished at the time of this writing, the slow-burn hasn’t evolved into full-on mutual pining, but it’d be a shame to miss out on such a beautiful piece just because of that. Make sure to leave an appreciative comment, and hopefully we’ll see more of this someday.

how do each character react to finding out the other(s) has a crush on someone outside their friend group? do they have different approaches to acting as a "wingman" for their buddy, or do they worry about becoming a third wheel?

oh boy, Kaede is all excited to wingman, Shuichi's biggest worry is probably that she'll accidentally confess his feelings for him, or otherwise put him in a situation he's not ready for because he likes to take his sweet, sweet time with processing his feelings, meanwhile Kaede is a firm believer in pushing him outside his comfort zone. Even if she's... unsure of his taste, she might interrogate this person in order to make sure they'll be good for him, or try to give a shovel talk if they do get together, but she wingmans nonetheless, that is her duty as a bestie and she takes it seriously.

Being a third wheel is just Shuichi's fate, he knew it to be so before Kaede even really caught feelings for anyone, just from the way she would try to flirt with every girl they'd come across when they hang out, and some guys that she could call pretty all the same, he's been on the receiving end of her compliments before, it's hard to tell when she's being friendly and when she's interested in someone. She flirts for the fun of the game, has a habit of stopping to talk to people and not hesitating to invite them to tag along regardless of the company she's already in (or maybe she does ask, but Shuichi never says no), anything Kaede does is an open invitation group activity, maybe it's just that she loves everyone a little bit and everybody loves her. But once she falls for realsies, it's s e r i o u s, it's an emergency. She is dragging her moral support anxious wet dog bestie around to "casually" walk into them, and hang out together, and she makes schemes to get closer to them that she just needs Shuichi's help with (Kaede, why are all of these group activities? Kae-please, wouldn't it be for the best if you spend some time alone with them? -Nuh Uh, it'll be fun and we'll strengthen our bonds, it's a perfect plan, Shuichi!), and it's unfair that he won't "investigate" (it's called stalking, Kaede) to find out what they would like so she can win them over with that.

Bonus: If they crush on the same person [I rub my hands evilly] Shuichi tries to hide his feelings and help Kaede with her schemes anyway, but since those require him to be so involved... she notices the chemistry and creates a new scheme without telling him and on the next hang-out she switches from walking in the middle to the third person being between them and starts asking them unsubtle questions like "Don't you agree Shuichi is looking great in that jacket?" or even straight up "What do you think about polyamory?" and Shuichi probably spits out his drink as she does. She's just like, so my bestie likes the same person as I do... that's great! If we both date them then instead of cutting into our time to hang out, it'll increase it. Stonks B)

Hit with this earlier, so am sharing.

But the idea of Hope's Peak is that some people are just better than others. Whether they're born with Talent or fought hard for it or just happen to have it because they needed to survive, they are better than others. Specifically at this one thing they do. Whether or not that's all they'll ever be - regardless of whether or not they want that to be all they'll ever be - they are better than everyone else. And they're chosen to go to this special school because they're better.

The Reserve Course is throw us enough money, and we'll let you say that you're better, even though you're not. It's throw us money for the name and prestige. It's throw us money because everyone has bought into our school being better and having the people who are better. (Which gives the idea that when companies or teams or whatever are going through resumes, they're also specifically looking for HPA graduates.)

And Hope's Peak is all about how do we make the most Talented most bestest person possible to the point of human experimentation, where they rip apart everything that makes someone human - makes them themselves - just to make them the bestest human being ever.

And Junko starts the Tragedy by basically saying no, that's bullshit, treat everyone equally.

I mean, she says it in a lot of messed up ways, but that's what the Reserve Course riots are about. They're being used as cash cows for something they didn't agree to, they aren't being treated the same as the actual better than you people, and it's one of them who was taken and experimented on to be made the bestest person ever, not one of the better than you people, who is already better than you.

HPA has no concern for the value of an actual human life.

And Junko spits in their face because look, the best of your best, your actual student council, I can make them rip each other apart and look, your human experiment who is supposed to be the bestest person ever is just as bad as everyone else and no, look, they are just. like. everyone else.

So what does HPA do?

They don't learn their lesson.

They take the survivors of the attack on their academy for trying to pretend that some people are just better than others, and again, say you are better than everyone else, the only hope for humanity are you specialist special kids, so we will lock you and only you away, and not even think that other people could possibly stay in this honking huge building we have here, it's only for the specialist special people and they will make everything better once they get out!

Of course, Junko's going to throw a Killing Game with them.

They aren't better than everyone else.

That's the entire point.

They fall to the exact same problems that even your everyday normal person does: threat to loved ones, not wanting their secrets told, money, backstabbing - they are exactly the same as everyone else, and their Talent doesn't suddenly make them better people.

Fuck off with that some people are naturally better than others bullshit. You all suck.

Junko's the Ultimate Despair because she looks at the whole of humanity and sees that everyone is equally horrible (which is true).

Makoto's the Ultimate Hope because he looks at the whole of humanity and sees that everyone is equally able to change (which is also true).

🌶️Spice — who can handle spice, and do they tease their friend(s) who can't?

🛏️ Sleep — what sleeping habits do they have? how would they comfort the other(s) after a nightmare? would they share a bed or cuddle together, or does that cross a boundary?

🏠 Housemates — how would these characters be as housemates? if they're already roommates, what does their life look like together? if not, would they want to live together, or would that be pushing things too far?

🗺️ Map — who leads the way when navigating, and who's more likely to get lost?

🎤 Karaoke — what's their go-to karaoke songs, for when they're taking turns singing and what duet do they choose when they're singing together?

ANGST & HURT/COMFORT

👑 Devotion — are they willing to die for one another? go to the ends of the earth to make each other happy? is one person more devoted to serving the other, like a knight protecting their ward?

💥Disagreements — how often do they fight? what's the quickest way to get them to have a petty argument, and what would genuinely have them at each other's throats? is there relationship one where they're quick to forgive the other(s), or do they each need time to figure things out?

⚔️ PVP — if there were forced to fight one another, how would they react? would someone throw the fight to protect the other, or would they both give it their all if something important was on the line? in a larger friend group, how would the characters divide themselves into teams if they were all pitted against one another?

What if I said every single piece of saiou by evercelle? What are you gonna do? You can't stop me. You can't make me choose. Everything about them makes me crazy, the style, the take on the dynamic, the poses, the colors, but the black and white pieces too, the eyes, oh the eyelashes sometimes, the legs, the clothes, I would be licking it off the floor on all fours if that was how Ever would serve it, I'm eating it up no matter what.

what's your dream theme/plot for a fic, and who would write it best? The second part of the question is interesting to me... because I don't believe I've ever thought of it that way? when I pose a prompt I want to see multiple options of it, I want it endlessly, I want the differences between interpretations to get my brain going with more ideas, I want to have my own version of it (but I probably won't), I hope everyone writes it or draws it or uses some of the themes or a specific element of it in another thing they're doing, I hope they let me know so I can see. If I had a specific person in mind, it'd be a situation when they're already writing a fic I am invested in and try to make predictions for, but when my attention is captured like that rarely ever I am disappointed, my silly scenarios in my head are just extra spice and I can adjust them. And it's classic fake dating, obviously, I want pinning, I want all the pinning in the world, and the feelings realizations, the denial, the holding back, the invisible barriers, the rules, the tension, the misunderstandings, the lack of communication, the messiness of it all, the tension, the kisses, the "they're not looking anymore", the awkward bed sharing, the looking when the other doesn't see, the rules again, it's the boundaries, it's that they're so close, but there are things they feel not allowed to do, I love that, did I mention the boundaries and the surrounding nervousness, not wanting to rock the boat and cross the line, something breaking anyway, the devastation, the reconciliation, the resolution of all the yearning and maybe of the sexual tension if we're lucky. I want it all a million trillion times, all with Kokichi being the fake bf, I could do with all being saiou, but I could see some variety too, ouruma would be funny, tojouma could get real sad I think, I struggle to imagine Hoshi in this scenario but it would make it all the better if someone would try, Kaede would be a different kind of funny than Miu, she's so unserious, she could probably find a way to skip the angst and just go for it. I will not get tired of it.

name one internet reference that will always make you laugh  I don't think there's anything like that, most of my laughs have to be startled out of me, for me there is quiet fondness in recognizing references (and I probably miss plenty that aren't tumblr specific, my pop culture knowledge is rather narrow, so I really cherish having the context), things that don't catch me off-guard can get a huff or a fond eye roll if they're funny.

what will make you click away from a fanfiction immediately? Once I opened a fic it can be difficult for me to tear myself away, the way one can't look away from a car crash, I've gotten better at it over the years, but it's usually not immediate, the way I can immediately skip a fic I haven't started because of the tags and summary, I'll skip immature edgy attempts at dark fiction because I've had enough of those in my day and now I grew out of it, and I'll skip age gaps and rape fics (I am not particularly sensitive to the topic, so I don't avoid all fics tagged with it, but pwp pieces that are just that are a hard no. huh. I guess situations when I didn't get that it's the case from the tags are ones where I do click out of a fic), I tend to skip weirdos who write "X, but this is good and pure x, this is the nicest I could make x, it's now morally approachable, because I am not a freak bad person" and I am like, this is more perverse and disturbing of you to go to these lengths rather than writing it straight up with an "it's just fiction" mindset, why are you justifying it so much, why are you trying to make the x fucked up thing morally pure, why does it have to be cute and acceptable? I am telling you, that's the most disturbed type of person to watch out for online.

I developed an ick for malewife/ housewife when said about a male character, it was cute the first few weeks and now, it's been years and I am so sick of it, I am in despair over how much deeper we went into reapplying misogyny to gay men thanks to this language, it's legit a trigger into a nasty downwards spiral. It's more of a pet peeve when I see "like a lovesick schoolgirl" (and it's often used when they are young and acting lovesick so like, it's there to note that it's a feminine trait to be so emotional and it's shameful and immature to be girly for them, they should have a grip on their emotions, be cool, that's the masculine trait. Um, once you unpack it like that it's fucked up, but it's in every fanfiction ever, so I don't even bother getting angry about it anymore) or adult women, even mothers being referred to as girls, in mlm fics it's like, every so often someone uses the word "man" when talking about a boy to add a little variety to the repetitions, but it's so rare to see writers use the word woman, girls sometimes make background appearance, and moms might be more common cameos than dads actually, but it's something that even some really good writers do.

I can get fed up and not check new updates on a fic if I get to a point where I dread them (GSA), when I know things are going in a direction I don't like (like when it became clear they're fucking doomed in the unnamed fic, I couldn't handle the horrors like, at all.) or can't handle because some things do affect me badly (the one example I have for this wasn't even in the saiou tag, it was recced for Tenko and Kokichi friendship, it was a talentswap & timeloop combination, so really interesting, Kokichi remembered og timeline but had Maki's talent now, and it was kinda changing him as time went on, so the interactions Kokichi had with Kaito started out fine, Kaito got decked like he should and told off by both Tenko and Kokichi, like, it was what I wanted, he was denied very openly, it was clear that he was being pushy and gross and Kokichi was running away from him a bunch of times, and refused the sidekick thing, but instead of laying off, eventually, and that was good ways into the fic Kokichi changed his tune instead and it was made into him being tsundere just like Maki now, huffing and giving in to only playfully keeping up the bit of hating him, despite the fact that it's been serious until then, and I was so. idk. revolted, horrified and disgusted, defiled even, I think it was traumatic for me actually, never noped this hard out of something, it just went and touched my deepest fear and it's just the very specific scenario that makes me want to take my skin off to wash it, it's a big thing as to why I find Kaito's character unforgivable, it just took the most disturbing thing I know and went isn't it sweet? he can wear even Kokichi down, he's so extroverted and friendly :), as if it wasn't a total disregard for boundaries and consent)
