I was so excited to read Demigods & Magicians, but it just made me angry. My disappointment is immeasurable and my day is ruined:
At first I kinda thought that it was weird when Percy seemed exhausted by making that Hurricane/Whirlpool/whatever in The Son of Sobek, but OK. It's from Carter's POV, and Percy was noted to have Magic act weirdly around him and he wasn't injured after that Falcon Warrior fist by Carter, either. So I can accept that, and chalk it up to exhaustion and misinterpretation.
(I really didn't care about the Staff of Serapis)
But in The Crown of Ptolemy?! First, he makes Percy be super clumsy (I don't remember that ever being the case?) and Percy talks about it as if it was normal (which is in direct opposition to The Son of Sobek). Again, ok, whatever, Setne cursed him to be super clumsy or something. I don't like it, but acceptable. (Although it does make me wonder why magic suddenly doesn't act weird around Percy anymore.)
But then Percy complains about the rain. Percy complains about THE RAIN!?!?!?!. Sure, Percy, who got a boost by being in the rain in the first book and can simply decide to not get wet, suddenly gets inconvenienced by a bit of water falling from the sky. That's believable. You would think that being on an island surrounded by water while it's raining would be ideal, but apparently Rick has decided to go back on everything he wrote about Percy.
(and Percy is once again written to be a good little boyfriend. Can't make Annabeth angry. Can't let her get annoyed. Wow, if we had a kid she'd be a lot like Sadie - he's seventeen, stop. Just stop.)
And then there's more of that DELIGHTFUL (not) ~dumb meathead Percy can't understand anything and never has a plan~ writing.
I'm five seconds from chucking the book across the room.
Tumblr media
Of course Annabeth wants to host the goddess. She's the only Person without powers there (and honestly wouldn't be that useful that fight otherwise). She just wants to have powers for once! But then both she and Nekhbet imply that Percy is stupid. (the book is now in danger of being burned)
"For the record: I have my own healthy fear of Annabeth" - I don't think it's healthy to be scared of your girlfriend, actually :)
At least Percy gets to have some cool moments later. He turns down immortality while the goddess possessing him is trying to influence him in the other direction. He fights Setne. He figures out both Setne's and the goddesses' plans. Iconic!
I don't think Sadie giving Annabeth her Ren was smart. She should've at least demanded it back like Set did that one time.

When a post gets downvoted as few as 1 or 2 times, they are just harder to find. (Comments get hidden but are still easy to see.) Because it kinda stops circulating in whatever group you posted it too.
So if someone says something unpopular like they don't get the hype for a well loved character and are wondering if others feel the same, the chance of them finding out if people agree with them drop significantly if it gets downvoted. Unless people are looking for those types of posts.
Getting downvoted on reddit for saying percbeth were better than they were friends is too funny to me. (Rick is not good at writing romance, in my opinion. Every character gets reduced to whoever's bf/gf as soon as they start dating)
Like tell me you're childish without telling me you're childish.

Oh, look, here's one now. Outing themselves.
I disagree with people all the time. I don't downvote them when I do it. That's childish. I just keep scrolling...

If I am remembering correctly, Sally has no family. She's an only child and every relative she has is dead, so she's the only one left. Then, she gets pregnant at nineteen and is forced to raise Percy all on her lonesome. And Percy, being a child of the big three, attracts dangers as young as a toddler, so Sally marries an smelly, abusive jerk to mask Percy's scent in attempt to keep him safe. Sure, he is safe from mythological monsters with the intent to kill, but not from the ones of which reside in the mortal realm. Percy is deadass bullied out of every school he attends, has evident self-esteem issues, and has a shitty home life. She tries to take him to Montauk so they can get away from it all and bond, but it's only a temporary escape. Then, Percy gets attacked by a fury at school, and Sally has to drive in a hurricane to get Percy to safety, which is successful, but at the cost of her life. In her dying moments, she fights to protect her son the way her family never did for her, but indirectly dooms him to the same fate: being the only survivor in the family. Yes, in The Lightning Theif, Percy did lose Sally, but Sally lost Percy, too.

percy is definitely aware that he has a reputation at camp and he hates it. he hates how campers look up to him, like he's someone they should strive to become and they fucking shouldn't. being a hero means making the tough decisions, it's watching people you've grown to care for die, it's swallowing your fear and performing anyway with the weight of thousands of lives on your shoulders. percy wouldn't wish his childhood and teenage years on anyone. he also hates how some campers are afraid of him. he hates that they have every right to be because he has killed and liked it, he has tortured and liked it, and in the midst of battle, he is the one who recklessly puts himself in harms way and succeeds because he allows his resentment and anger to overtake him like a monster. ironically.

thinking abt tlt, som, and ttc era percy
percy who's still struggling to find his footing at camp, and every single time during those first three prophecies, he's seen as the outcast, and never once brought into the fold until he comes back after finishing the prophecy.
there's always something that pushes him to the outskirts, something that gives the other campers fodder to make fun of him or completely ignore him.
he thinks he's found his place after the minotaur? nope, turns out everyone sees him as a bad omen and he doesn't make any friends because the entire camp refuses to be around him.
he thinks he's found his place after lighting thief? restoring zeus' bolt? NOPE he finds out tyson is a cyclopes and his brother and now one of his closest friends + the campers are icing him out and grover's not around.
he thinks he's found his place after sea of monsters? restored thalia's tree and hey, now he's got a cousin? NOPE he's pushed aside in favor of her by the campers and chiron and is seen as incompetent and his best friend has been kidnapped and he's being blamed.
rereading those first three books now is so painful, because the way percy gets treated by the camp hurts so much, because literally all he wants is to be accepted by this group of people he should have so much in common with, but every single turn meets him with more people pushing him away.
and it isn't until battle of the labyrinth, until he's named as the child of the prophecy, that people actually start to treat him as one of them.
