Far Away From Home - At the start of the year I had 5 travel plans with the next one being now in March. - I cancelled most of my trips with a heavy heart; home is calling. - I love to travel around the world, exploring new destinations and discovering new cultures; yet I have this feeling that I am running away from something important that I need to do here in Mauritius. - There is so much to do here from coral surveying to helping fishermen to catch the right size fish! How can I take a holiday from that? - Going forward I will try to match my next travels with supporting my marine biology studies, learning from organisation worldwide and bringing the knowledge back home. Swimming for 24 hours? - Being a waterman for me is not much of an achievement or sports thing. - Being a waterman is a feeling that I got after my first unassisted open ocean swim. There was no clapping and no awards won; just a deep feeling of being one with the ocean. - Being a waterman is understanding the ocean and always learning from it. What I do best - It has been 2 days now in Goa and after more than 30 hours flight, I have to admit that I wasn’t enjoying much of it. - This morning I decided to get myself wet as that’s when I am the happiest. I only had 2 hours before making my way to Dona Paula in Panji; another hours drive. - After doing my lengths and annoying everyone going back in forth, I spotted a young Indian girl trying to swim. - Everything was wrong with her movements but I could see she was eager to get somewhere; I took it upon myself to give her her first swimming lesson. - After a few minutes explaining the basics, I got her to float and tread water. Then I showed her how to be streamlined and propulsé herself through the water. - It was an amazing experience for both of us! The attentive eyes of someone that wants to learn. Not a glimpse of ‘I know that’ in her eyes which you would get from an adult. - My day and even holiday was done; I am happy. - It made me realise that it has been a while since I haven’t properly taught something to someone eager to learn.
