bisexual people aren’t more likely to cheat in relationships but we are more likely to cheat at cards, while lesbians are most likely to cheat at jenga, and genderqueer people often cheat at mario kart

AOU and Humanity (so many spoilers)
I want to talk about the theme of humanity in Age of Ultron. I want to address the fact that Tony Stark runs his hand down the staircase wall, accidentally touches the light, and jerks his hand back as he’s been burned.
I don’t know if that was RDJ actually loosing track of where his hand was, but we know that final edits are never an accident. If it was put in the movie, then it was put there on purpose, and I want to talk about it.
All throughout AOU we watch the intrinsic definition of humanity get thrown around. People stutter and can’t figure out what they want to say and then trail off. We have lines like “good talk” “no it wasn’t” and Pietro’s perfect little “oooo!” right before he grabs Mjolnir.
We get a close-up moving shot of Ulysses Klaue’s family in picture frames on his desk, minutes before Ultron rips his arm off.
All of this revolves around the movie’s thematic question, “what does it mean to be human?” Stated another way, “what does it mean to be a monster?”
Concerns about the movie aside, I am overwhelmingly excited by this theme, and I want to talk about it.
Let’s start with Clint. Clint’s is easy, because we see his family. BAM out of the blue, we are reminded that Clint is human. Now, that wasn’t very far for us to go with our adorable amazing little Hawkeye, because his humanity is actually a central part of his character, and how his character relates to other people.
But AOU really went above and beyond. The moment in the city when he’s talking to himself about shooting Pietro? “No one would know.” “Last I saw him Ultron was sitting on him.” Besides laughing our asses off, how many of us were reminded of moments when we’ve done similar things? Hell, I’ve said similar things when I was babysitting uuuuuh, interacting with some short spoiled people.
Moving beyond that, we have Steve talking about his memories and his own evolution. We have Tony afraid of outliving everyone he loves. We have Wanda and Pietro touching their hands together–running their fingers over skin–the first time we see them.
Do you realize how important physical human contact is to our emotional development? Infants and children who don’t get any physical contact growing up do not usually become stable people. The Maximoff twins fill the void of their lost parents with each other, and we get that whole understanding in a single shot.
The debate, at the end, over whether Vision is worthy or a machine? They’re arguing the definition of humanity.
And Ultron himself? Despite all his claims to the contrary, his flaws—his very nature—are nothing but Tony and Bruce’s flaws bleeding through into him. His quest for evolution is steeped in irony, because he’s the only character in the whole movie who’s incapable of it.
Of course, this all escalates as the narrative develops. We start to leave behind light-hearted verbal exchanges and the “oh so relatable moments.” Instead, we get Bruce and his isolation. That shot of him in the stealth-moded little jet? We all know the fear of loneliness. We know what it means to be bereft. The fear of being alone is integral to our existence as humans. It’s why society exists and functions as a whole.
We get Natasha and her desire for children, for the continuation of her life, matched up against Ultron’s speech about how even procreation is a manifestation of humanity’s yearning for death. We get the whole team willing to die on a flying city, when they could easily escape. And I’m not talking about after they have a plan. I’m talking about when they literally are expecting to just stand there and ride the city into the sky. The darkness behind disvaluing your own life? So human.
Of course, this all climaxes at Pietro’s death. Looking back, we really couldn’t have expected anything else. At the heart of the matter, what’s more human than the fact that we die? “A thing isn’t beautiful because it lasts.”
