I had an epiphany today.
I had an epiphany today,me and my family moved into our house about 3 years ago. A little less than1 mile from our house there is a major intersection and at this intersection there is a neighborhood icon. A young guy probably not more than 18 years old who spins a sign. He is in the same spot almost every single day and has been ever since me and my family moved here. Why is this important you may ask.
The reason I am writing about this kid is because he has to be the best god damn sign spinner I have ever seen, and I don't mean with skill. He doesn't do crazy tricks, he doesn't flip or do acrobatics and he will never have to and still be better than his competition. What is the purpose of a sign holder? It is to grab your attention, it is to get you curious and force you to look at whatever that business is selling. In this aspect this guy has mastered his trade, he is listening to what I could only guess is death metal music. He screams and jumps around for hours on end, almost un human like with as much energy that this kid has. I have seen him a million times and every time I pass him I still cannot help but stare and laugh at how crazy and energetic this kid is.
This morning me and my girl are driving and there he is, front and center in all of his bat shit crazy glory. I laughed as we drove by and for the 10004090th time I commented “damn that guy is good at his job” my girl laughs and agrees and then asked a question that sparked a wildfire in my brain. She asked me “ what does his sign even say”? For the life of me I couldn't recall, I had no idea what his sign said. I had no idea what he was promoting or what business he worked for.
The entrepreneur in me started twisting and knotting up and it almost made me angry thinking about it. This business owner who had this guy out here spinning his sign was extremely lucky. He found this kid with an endless amount of energy ( whom he probably pays shit) and his potential clients (me and my girl) can't even name the business he works for. It hit me like a brick to the teeth, this guy did what he was supposed to do, what every business owner wants to do. He got my attention, he forced me to look and I complied. This brings me to my point, just because you have my attention does not mean you have won, it is not even half of the battle.
Business’ spend MILLIONS of dollars each year (maybe even billions) on marketing. Coming up with new ideas on how to take your attention and direct it to what they are selling. I have come to learn instead of spending all that money and time to market to the masses you should instead spend your resources on the most important people. People who are looking for YOU! Find people who want what you offer and cater to them. Find people who listen to the music you make, people who eat the food you cook or would wear the designs that you design. don't get caught up in spamming the masses and try to play the statistics game. Be strategic, be a surgeon and focus on precision and quality and the people who matter will spread the word to other people who matter. Just some food for thought.

Inspiration
I am a firm believer in “work for a year , celebrate your success for a day and set a new goal the day after.” I have accomplished more goals this year as a brand owner and as an individual than I have in a long time. But for some reason I have had this itch more and more to seek knowledge.The more I learn the more I realize how little I really know.
I get asked for advice a lot and have learned that when I give it it’s like I am talking to a younger me. I try to give advice that I would have felt was valuable. I am brand owner ya, but I am a normal guy. I have a house, I have bills and I responsibilities. I get discouraged, I get worn out and I depend on my creativity to support my family and keep the flame and soul of my dream lit. This can be extremely stressful and I have learned “stressed” is the least creative and productive mood you can be in. It’s easy to get caught in the daily motions and lose track of years (not being dramatic).
So I am constantly searching for ways to stay focused. Ways to stay free from the chain that binds our brains to our daily duties. Don’t let life make you stupid. I have made it a personal goal to seek, I don’t know what but just to seek. Music, adventure, knowledge,money or whatever I feel what will make me happy that day.
I was at kinko’s getting some signs printed for an event and made eye contact with a real beauty. I couldn’t keep my eyes to myself and even caught myself not listening to , even almost annoyed by the employee trying to help me (sorry dude). Anyways this cat FINALLY walked into the back room giving me just enough time to run over to this lady. I asked her to kindly move the hell out of my way so I could pick up this book that was calling me so hard before the kinko’s guy came back out.
Subconsciously I think I may have either heard of or seen this book before which is what drew me to it. I picked it up an I found a random page and read it. Then I flipped and read the next,and the next….and the next. I stood there for almost 45 minutes reading this book and was instantly reminded of my passion for reading. which leads me to the reason for writing this entry. Do not lose site of the things that bring you joy,they may just be the fuel to your passion without you knowing it. I had no idea I had ran so low on creative juices, then it hit me. how could I be creative, I got caught in this loop of day to day duties and didn’t make time for new experiences. How could I possibly create a work of art with no tools, no stories.
You do not have to be an artist to understand or appreciate the insight this book offers, I strongly recommend all of you to read it. It slapped me in my face and brought me out of a slump I didn’t even realize I was in.
