Thought dump about yesterday

Under a cut because, maybe controversial

To make this absolutely clear, I don't dislike Thierry and this isn't a hate manifesto. He's one of my favourite drivers, but that doesn't mean uncritical support and I really don't think yesterday showed Thierry at his best. I agree with what people have been saying about his interviews at the end of SS18 and immediately afterwards, because that was shitty behaviour towards Martijn.

I know Thierry doesn't always engage his brain before opening his mouth and he did row it back later, but it still really doesn't help an awful situation to make things even more awful by publicly humiliating someone who can't defend themselves (Martijn can't exactly lean across and start arguing about it or tell him to fuck off; Thierry is his boss and Martijn is stuck in the car with him). And Martijn very clearly knew he'd fucked up.

It would have taken 0.2 seconds to say something like, "I don't know yet, we will have to look at the data". And then just shut up. There's a lot to be said for shutting up and saying these things in private, as I'm sure he did as well since they had plenty of time when it was just them in the car. Public comments can spiral very quickly a la Colin McRae and Nicky Grist.

So yeah, I don't think yesterday exactly showed the best of Thierry's character. He's not a rookie who is new to motorsport at that level. Sometimes it's better to not say anything, or say something tactful, because the alternative reflects badly on you.

(I'll draw a parallel to Elfyn's stage end interview on Rally Sweden about the road position swap; he started saying what I'm pretty sure he really thought and had been saying to Scott, and then stopped when he realised how petty it sounded. After that he stuck to variations on it's what it is, it's the game etc)

#....yeah. #i was pretty pissed off with him when he immediately threw martijn under the bus #like ok maybe he called the note late but you're the one driving the fuckin thing #and it certainly wasn't on purpose. the lad looked on the verge of tears for the rest of the day and you were the first person to see that #idk. and i know it was a heat of the moment thing cause his tone def changed later #but yeah. that was a big bonehead moment from T and i'm disappointed in him #slightly unrelated but i've been watching onboards of and interviews with martijn all day and nearly crying cause i love him so much #i wish that fella all the espressos and cycling sessions in the pyrenees he needs to clear his head #he's one of the finest co-drivers on display today and this doesn't take away from that #(sorry for the word vomit. i'm feeling things)
