the best hades could do was doze. he slumped in the chair beside her bed, head lolling to the side as sleep came and went in dizzying, anxiety-riddled waves.

it was only when hades woke with a start, jolted awake by a spike of panic, did hades realize niamh’s eyes were open. immediately, tears stung his own and it was only through sheer determination that he kept them at bay. hades reached for her hand, slowly coming into her field of view.

“hello, darling,” he murmured. “just rest, okay? i’m here, and i’m not going anywhere. just try and stay calm for me.”

“what happened?” less of a question and more a demand, the words tumbled from worried lips before hades could rein them back in. he had only just opened the door, sparing melinoe a passing glance, but it was enough to set himself to panic. there was ichor, bandages, a visible grimace on his daughter’s face - everything he needed to know, and still not enough information at all.

he knelt beside her, dark brows furrowed intensely on his forehead. “what did this? who did this? if anyone has harmed you, i will have their head.”

tempered though hades might have been, there were some circumstances in which he would not keep his head. seeing harm come to his children was one of those circumstances. hand outstretched, hades took one of the cloths from her hand and began to wipe away the ichor, frowning deeply. “is this the only wound, or is there more?”

muscles ached and joints creaked, the weight of battle heavy on every soul - even the lord of war. war was a natural phenomenon, the basest urges of humanity made manifest in something big, and violent, and chaotic. to represent that should have made ares wild, should have made him untouchable. but even he fell victim to the slice of a blade, and as golden ichor mixed with the blood of the fallen, he should have gone mad with bloodlust.

but there was aphrodite. there was always aphrodite, and she could rile him up or bring him back down to a simmer with a single smile. she quieted the buzzing in his head, and made the pain he felt seem small. even now, her gentle hands wiped the gold-red concoction from his skin, wiping away the sins of war as if she could truly make him clean.

“you’re perfect,” ares murmured, before he could help himself. he was undeserving of her tenderness, even after all these years. “where would i be without you?”

but hades only allowed a single moment to pass before he set the papers down, sighing heavily. his own experience with the olympians was far different. he had known them all his entire life - or their entire lives, anyway. he had been on the receiving end of their anger on more than one occasion, watched the world starve once for it. but maggie was right - they’re not so bad.

they were family, at least, and hades loved them.

“i’m glad that your new life is going well. all of my olympian brethren can be kind, if you let them.” hades pursed his lips, fighting a smirk. “maybe not so big, and not so scary, but they will drive you crazy eventually. try not to let anyone under your skin.”
