@mageiia asked: it's only been a few weeks , really , since she was forcibly put to rest with abilities far more than her caffeine and anxiety concoction that had kept her awake . she's spent time carefully navigating some light research that would , hopefully , in no way , signal or connect to her father . she finds some information easily — family structure , roles in well known tales , popular symbols , some shared with his twin — but nothing that really digs into what he would be like , personality wise . and that is what intrigues her .

so , naturally , she does what any curious person would do — she repeats the steps necessary to get his attention . and that is how she winds up staying awake for 3 days straight , with a combination of parties , caffeine , and baking to keep herself busy and avoiding rest .

It was usually a bad idea to draw a god's attention through negative means - even Hypnos who wasn't renowned for a short temper. Fortunately for the child of Hermes, his vendetta against her father put her in a good position. Hermes had perfected each strategy to avoid sleep known to both man and god, and there was little hope of him succumbing, but his immortal child? Now that was a good way to send a message.

That he was the only exception.

So a great amber eye peered in at her from her window as she stared at that damn bright screen. That somehow also worked as a strategy, but it did strain the eyes and oh boy could he exploit that now that he'd been drawn here by exasperated dreams fed up of waiting for her. He'd dismissed them and decided to act on this himself. To nip this all in the bud before it became a problem. He didn't want to have to make a sepeate to-do list!

The moment that she next took a long blink to clear her eyes, he grabbed hold of her aura and yanked her into unconsciousness before she could react. Really it was overkill but he was used to her speedy winged herald of a father.

Now she stood on a grassy field that faded off into white mist in every direction. The Heralds' Plain. The place the gods liked to pass on their most direct messages to followers. Once it had looked more lavish, but it had been disused for a while with more and more messages sent via dreams and abstract thoughts.

Hypnos drifted out of the mist, looking completely alert and awake despite his blanket cloak. Here there was no feeling of sleepiness, there was no need.

"I checked how old you were, and wow for your age you sure seem to act like a new worshipper with how you're pressing all my buttons. It's like you want to go to Hades' court! You've found the fast track! Buuut that's a lot of paperwork and boy do I not have time for that." He crosses his legs so he is now cross-legged in the air before her, a light breeze ruffling around them. "So you have my attention, which you coulda just politely asked for by the way, what d'you want?"

@mageiia asked: what’s something about your hades & zeus that you want established followers to remember and new followers to know? (if that’s too hard/weird, here’s another one: what event would you point to as most formative for your hades and zeus portrayals?)

this is such an amazing question and honestly its something i feel like i haven't properly addressed in a long while so i'm happy you sent this!!

i think the biggest and most important thing is that i really try not to portray either of them as one-dimensional, nor as what most of the 'fandom' tends to represent them as. zeus is not the idiot who can't keep it in his pants, who doesn't care about others, or someone who actively tries to screw over humanity. hades is not a misunderstood teddy bear who only wanted to save persephone from her horrible abusive mother. they're both a lot more complex, and i really try to drive that home.

zeus is not some magnificent hero, but he is not a cruel or unforgiving person. his relationship with hera is not nearly as 'toxic' as people like to make it out to be -- in fact, they love each other very much. his affairs are often out of duty (creating a larger, stronger olympus) or out of a really strong sense of love he possesses for others. i acknowledge that myths write some of his relationships as nonconsensual - but i also acknowledge that these are myths written by men of a different age and i choose to interpret things a little differently. basically to me, zeus is not at all a horrible person, but a flawed and very complicated figure with a lot of love, but also a lot of baggage.

i think the most significant thing about hades is that he is by no means a good person either, which i think fandom tends to... overexaggerate. hades is often depicted as doing nothing wrong and i think that is so far from the truth. he kidnapped persephone. he can sometimes be cruel and unforgiving. he has also been unfaithful. and all of this can be true and he can still have redeeming qualities, things that make him relatable and lovable. i really like to play into hades as this very flawed but very raw and real figure who struggles as much as anyone else could.

as for formative moments, this kind of takes it in a different direction but for zeus, there are two: one is obviously his fight against cronus / ascending the throne, and the second is typhoeus. the first forms him into the kind of king he is for so long, and the second is the moment he starts to reform himself as a better, more just king. i think the underlying theme though is that zeus is a figure with a lot of trauma and suffering under his belt, a king who has actively fought and suffered for his people and that's so so so so so important to me.

for hades its the death of zagreus. i think there's a lot of other really significant events in his life, but for who he is in my current intrepretation, its this. zagreus dying completely changed his entire perspective. it drew hades' worst traits to the surface and changed his life for millennia. he's only now actively fighting against his trauma and pain over losing his son and learning to heal and thats... a long time haha

finally, i should also mention i've rubbed my queer little hands all over both of them and their relationships to masculinity are far from traditional, which is fun !

" mismatched eyes are amused as they look about maggie's garden. there were many moments in which his imagination has gone a bit on the wilder side thinking of what manner of plants she's used for her magic. but safe to say, that those hopes were easily dashed when he follows her into her gardens, a basket resting on his elbow and his friend plucks, snips, and gathers what she needed. " safe to say i'm a bit disappointed. " this, of course, is a jest. it wasn't everyday occurence that zagreus came into contact with magic and potion making, so it was natural to think beyond the basics, wasn't it?

"Did you know that a snail can sleep for three years, and female ferrets die if they don't fuck soon enough?" Hypnos tells her, looking up from his phone. As if he hadn't fallen asleep and just read the first thing that was on his phone.

"Huh. Ferrets are freaky, I guess. We'd have no problem staying alive if we were ferrets." He raises his hand for a high five.

“you clearly haven’t made any of them angry,” it was a throwaway comment, murmured half-heartedly over the edge of the paper hades held. eyes scanned the document, nearly glassed over in boredom, but work was work and it had to be done. the balance of the world and the maintenance of peace kind of depended on it.

but hades only allowed a single moment to pass before he set the papers down, sighing heavily. his own experience with the olympians was far different. he had known them all his entire life - or their entire lives, anyway. he had been on the receiving end of their anger on more than one occasion, watched the world starve once for it. but maggie was right - they’re not so bad.

they were family, at least, and hades loved them.

“i’m glad that your new life is going well. all of my olympian brethren can be kind, if you let them.” hades pursed his lips, fighting a smirk. “maybe not so big, and not so scary, but they will drive you crazy eventually. try not to let anyone under your skin.”
