Marriage law fics that gloss over Hermione being pissed to all hell make me sad. Ones that have her just quietly accept that Ron's moved on with his surprise match (usually Lavender) a week after asking her to marry him make me want to reach through the screen and throttle the writer

For the last goddamn time...
"Kill your darlings" means "if something is holding you back, get rid of it, even if it sounds pretty."
That's it! That's all it means! It means if you're stuck and stalled out on your story and you could fix the whole block by removing something but you're avoiding removing that thing because it's good, you remove that thing. That's the darling.
It does NOT mean
That you have to get rid of your self-indulgent writing
That you should delete something just because you like it (?wtf?)
That you need to kill off characters (??? what)
That you have to pare your story down to the absolute bare bones
That you have to delete anything whatsoever if you don't want to
The POINT is that you STOP FEELING GUILTY for throwing out good writing that isn't SERVING THE STORY.
The POINT is that you don't get so HUNG UP on the details that you lose sight of the BIG PICTURE.
Good grief....

Ordered postcards of just some random travel shots I had saved on my computer to test what paper Moo is using these days. Sometimes I honestly do forget that I am a decent photographer until prints are in my hands

“'We’re gonna be down there alone?’ Marco yelped. ‘Underground? Dirt pressing in all around us? No air?’
Cassie shrugged. ‘Well, you’ll be a mole.’
'Well, then it’s all right,’ Marco said with shrill sarcasm. 'We’ll be moles, so it’s okay to be under twenty feet of dirt with no air.’
'Oh, you big baby,'I said. 'No problem.’
I say these things. I don’t know why. They just pop out of my stupid mouth.
'Ladies and gentlemen,’ Marco said, placing his hand on my shoulder, 'we have a volunteer.’
What could I say? I had to tough it through. 'Okay. Fine, Weenie-boy. I’ll go first.'”

Thoughts upon finishing my PJatO re-read:
Massive Annabeth character whiplash between first and second books. Some with Percy too, but not quite as noticeable. Mostly he gets a bit intellectually nerfed from the second book onwards, I'm guessing to make up for the fact that his demigod powers are significantly cooler than anyone else's, usually including Thalia's even after she becomes immortal. He can't be superpowered and as quick to pick things up as Annabeth; it'd ruin the plot tension
This is actually a bit annoying because you spend a lot of time going "Percy why you being stupid", but not quite as annoying as Annabeth going from 'reasonable, if a bit emotionally confused, kid' to 'kind of a bitch actually' seemingly out of nowhere. She gets better, but then Rachel comes in and the teenage drama starts
My god does Rick yadda yadda yadda his way through some stuff. Rising war tensions? Percy and Annabeth being awkward about Luke? Percy half kinda maybe sorta thinking about dating Rachel? An entire year of battles and deaths? Eh. Throw in a sentence, it'll be fine.
Do not understand the people who make out like Percy had no idea he was into Annabeth. He pretty obviously does, he just also doesn't know what to do about it given that (a) the girl runs hot and cold on him constantly, (b) he knows she's had a crush on Luke forever, and (c) he very well may not live to see 16.
You can tell that Rick got to books four and five, realised he'd written himself into a corner with the single first person perspective, and scrambled to try creating enough characters with enough backstory to make the coming war have any emotional impact at all
He didn't really succeed
Reading as an adult—like, a full grown one, not a college aged kid—is really a fundamentally different experience when it comes to the gods, especially Poseidon and Hermes. The ways in which they're doing the best they can given the constraints they're held to just aren't as clear when you're still closer to Percy's age than his mom's
Percy should've been ready to throttle everyone at the start of the fourth book, tbh. From a writing perspective, he doesn't know anything because it's more useful to the story. But from in world? No one told him his best friend was on trial, his other best friend never told him about the multiple times she was in town, there have been moves toward the war he and everyone else knows he may well die in but no one thought to keep him up to date, and yet somehow Annabeth's cranky he didn't mention a girl he spoke to once while running for his life six months ago? Fuck that. And fuck him feeling guilty about spending time with Rachel the next summer when Annabeth and Chiron, again, keep information from him. I like Percy/Annabeth, but Rick fucked that one up
I had forgotten how tedious it was to read Percy and Annabeth avoiding simple conversations. The Percy/Annabeth that lives in my head is from HoO so all the early teen awkwardness is mostly gone
Rick really does perfectly capture the middle school experience. In terms of overall vaguely Greco-Roman inspired fantasy I still prefer The Arkadians, but I've yet to read any author who can write about all the awkwardness and confusion the way Rick can. The monster health video about killed me

people say folks with adhd struggle with "delayed rewards" aka long term goals and as such we tend to focus more on short term rewards. what they don't talk about is that at when we Do accomplish long term goals we don't actually feel anything proportionate to the amount of work we did to achieve it. In my head I suffered for a while and then money spontaneously appeared in my bank account.

First you procrastinate on the task because it is not a big enough deal to get done urgently. Then you procrastinate on the task because it has become such a big deal that doing it is overwhelming. You would think that this implies a middle point where it is just big enough of a deal to get done easily, however the inherent perversity of the universe's causal geometry prevents this
