doomed by the narrative but not to death. doomed to survive. doomed to stay alive inside the story. doomed to never escape the narrative, not even through death. you are allowed no exit. there is no way out for you and there never was. you couldnā€™t die if you wanted to. the narrative has a hold on you and it wonā€™t let go. death is too sweet a doom for you. the story has something much worse in mind. there is no way out.

its dope how the CEO of this website can casually drop the fact that he had at least one content moderator on payroll who was accepting bribes to take down blogs on request, without revealing who was affected by this or what actions were taken to reverse the damage, and were all just supposed to be like oh ok thanks for taking care of that :D

Another reason I love Tolkien is what he does with character death
When characters die (or are perceived as having died) the others characters grieve their loss
When Gandalf falls in Moria once the rest of the fellowship is safe in Lothlorien they take time to mourn and grieve and remember
When Boromir dies Aragon, Gimli, and Legolas stop to give him as good a funeral as they can before going after Pippin and Merry and even that's not the end of his effect on the narrative.
Denethor allows his grief to destroy him (and nearly allows it to kill his other son) Faramir fights with his grief and his guilt for not going to Rivendell instead
And Frodo, who was betrayed by Boromir, is heart broken to hear of his death
The story of the Eo family is one of a family touched deeply by grief and that's why Eowyn and Faramir bonding in the houses of healing is so important
Because they do heal, by sharing their individual grief and carrying that combined pain between them
Because when death happens in LOTR it is always with intent, with purpose, and it allows for mourning. And while grief can be destructive mostly it's not, because it's shared.
(and I know there are a lot more examples these are just the first that came to mind)
Too many times I have read fantasy novels that don't let characters support each other when a character dies. And often if a character dies it's sad in the moment and then the narrative just stops caring
Tolkien's work is a story about grief and healing from it. People are changed by grief but it doesn't have to be a bad thing, it's just something that happens and that love and mutual support can carry you through
"I will not say, do not weep, for not all tears are an evil."
This is why I love Tolkien

The Shire was saved - but not for any of the Fellowship
So, I just finished my reread of the Lord of the Rings. And while I could say a lot about how it hits different every time since I read it first at the age of 8 to now being 26, there was one thing that I never realized and that really moved me.
We all know that Frodo never felt at home again in the Shire and left for the Undying lands to be healed. But while I read through the Appendix, I realizedā€¦ none of the fellowship found peace at their homelands after their quest:
- Frodo leaves for Valinor.
- Sam follows him after Rosie dies.
- Merry and Pippin go to Edoras when Ɖomer calls for them as heĀ“s getting old, they continue their journey to Minas Tirith, and stay there until they die and are buried besides Aragorn.
- Legolas canĀ“t resist the seagullsĀ“ calls and leaves for Valinor after Aragorn dies.
- Gimli goes with Legolas.
- Aragorn grows into his role as the king of Gondor during the quest and doesnĀ“t return to his former life at all.
- Gandalf may be the only member of the remaining fellowship that is doesnĀ“t fall into the same pattern, but then again, who knows what he was like before he came to Middle Earth and how heĀ“d felt when he came back to Valinor.
- Even Bilbo doesnĀ“t find his peace at the Shire and goes first to Rivendell and then to Valinor.
To me it seems like both a warning and a consolation. A warning that adventures are not just over, they leave a deep mark. That growth comes at a price and that even if it makes you stronger, wiser, and more confident, you may have to leave something behind that will never return, even if you yourself do.Ā
But on the other hand, it feels like a consolation for anyone who has been fundamentally changed by an experience and doesnĀ“t understand why they donĀ“t feel at home anymore at the place where they used to be most comfortable. For those who longed after their former home so much during times of hardship and return only to realize that they have outgrown their old ways.Ā
The end of their story right now feels like a warmĀ ā€œyou are not alone with this feelingā€ and there are no words to describe how marvellous I think it is that a story that IĀ“ve known by heart for so long still can surprise me and still has something more and deeper to offer whenever I come back to it. The story of all stories indeed.
