Interviews with the Guys - Hikaru Kazama

So turns out the original blog did Hikki's interview first... whoops! Well, last is better than never, so last but not least, time to interview Hikaru, a history and fighting teacher!

1. Why did you decide to teach history?

Well, actually, the staff here asked me to teach history because I’m pretty good with it. I’ve spent a lot of time catching up on what I’ve missed and learning all about the centuries before me. Back in my day, we didn’t have books to tell us all this stuff so it’s quite fascinating. Besides, laughs, I lived through some of it.

2. Do you have a favourite student? Can you tell us who?

Oh, that’s not a very nice question. Well, I guess if you can keep it off record, there is a certain girl who just joined- ah, no, I can’t say that! All of my students are a joy to be around.

3. What are some of your hobbies?

I really love learning about history and doing things like going out to the movies and all the wonders modern technology has to offer. But sometimes I yearn for the quiet, simpler things and that’s really the only time I feel at peace.

Interviews with the Guys - Takumi Arai

Today we get to talk to someone who’s getting pretty popular on campus, Takumi Arai!

1. So I hear you’re attending the university on a scholarship, can you tell us more about that? How did you get it?

Yeah! Actually, someone put my info in for the scholarship *scratches cheek* It was kind of embarrassing, but I won it because of my track record as a swimmer. I won the regionals too last year, so that kind of sealed the deal. Which was cool, ‘cause I wasn’t entirely sure how I was gonna pay for it.

2. You’re studying criminal justice, that’s quite a serious subject. What made you want to start studying that?

*laughs* Are you saying I don’t look serious? Don’t worry, I get that a lot. Yeah, I think of myself as a carefree guy, but the truth is there is some stuff I am really serious about. Helping people is one of them. I know what it’s like to have someone you love hurt and not be able to do anything about it. I never want to let anyone feel like that again.

3. With school and work and your club activities you must be very busy, what is it you like to do when you have some free time?

Free time? Oh, you mean – actually, I do something really cool in my free time! I’m an amateur detective and I take on cases for both supernaturals and humans. I’m determined to make a name for myself. But…because of that job I have to spend a lot of time training in order to keep up. *laughs* I guess I don’t actually have any free time!

Today’s interview is with Shinji, a student who majors in Music:

1. Let’s start the interview off with an icebreaker question that I’m sure everyone is dying to know. Is that your natural hair color?

Yup! Although I used to dye my hair red back in high-school, *laughs* I got in trouble for it a lot. Ah but I think you can still see some left over dye in my hair from that time.

2. You’re a Music Student right? What instrument or instruments do you play, and do you play in a band?

I’m in my third year of Music, yeah. I can play the violin, piano, guitar and bass, but I love guitar the most. I even have a little collection of my own. It’s nothing big, only four electric and an acoustic one. And no, I don’t play in a band right now, but when Shou has the time he joins me on his drums and we just play whatever. 

3. I heard you can talk to spirits. Is that a power you enjoy having?

Yeah. It’s something I had to get used to as a child, but now it’s great. And spirits tend to have the most interesting stories too! And from time to time if I find a restless spirit, I help with whatever they need so they can finally go in peace. So yeah, it’s a nice power to have, very rewarding.

1. So Tatsuya what exactly made you want to study business?

Hmm…I guess I’d have to say it’s because of my family. I can’t really say why, but I think having a business degree would be the best thing I could do to help them out. Also, my mother runs a café and the things I’ve learned have been useful to her.

2. I hear you have a big family. What are they like?

sighs* They can get on my nerves if you mean my siblings and parents. But we all get along pretty well. If you mean the Ryu clan, well…they’re all spread out and I haven’t met most of them. But, I don’t think most of us see eye to eye.

3. Now for a question that I’m sure everyone’s dying to know. Are you dating anyone right now? Or maybe you have someone you would like to date?

I-uh-is that really a necessary question? Uh, er…I’m not dating anyone and I don’t plan to. I don’t have time for that kind of stuff. Though…I guess, if the right girl came along it wouldn’t be completely out of the question.

1. So, Shou. Can you tell us about what kind of favorite roles you like to play?

Hard to pick just one! laughs Though I guess if I really have to choose, I’d say someone who is the complete opposite of me. It’s more challenging of course, but I think that’s what makes it more interesting. But really, I enjoy playing all sorts of roles! grins

2. What do you like to do for fun?

So many things! Playing video games with Shin, also playing the drums when I can find the time. Me and Shin always end up playing together in our living room laughs. What else? I love watching comedy movies, though I get dragged into watching a lot of scary ones too chuckles. Also taking bird pictures, it’s one of my hobbies actually.

3. Okay, here’s a big one… you’re a popular, good looking guy. Do you have a girlfriend, and… are you looking?

Why, you wanna date me? laughs No but seriously, I don’t have anyone right now and I’m not really looking for love. But I’m always looking for more friends! winks

Hikki-sensei in the house

(just a little heads up that this character bio actually gives pretty big spoilers about hikaru, as in it just straight up tells you what he is when in the actual game, it's kept as a bit of a mystery until his route, so i'm putting the bit that mentions what he is under a keep reading and adding the spoiler tag, just in case)

Today we bring you some facts about Hikaru:

Hikaru enjoys technology, but is bad with it due to being form another age.

Normally he’s very charming and kind but he has a stubborn streak.

Hikaru easily cries at romance or dramas and doesn’t have much shame about it.

He hates spicy and sour foods. He’s a total wuss about them.

Hikki does drive but he’s not the greatest - he scares people on the road.

He may not seem like it, but Hikaru is a demi-god, so here’s some more information on gods:

Gods There have been countless gods in existence. While many are forgotten and lost to the endless flow of time, there are still those who are very much alive. While it is rare for gods to leave their own realms, it is not unusual to see them amongst the humans from time to time. And then there are those few gods who do prefer to live in the mortal realm. After centuries spent around humans, they tend to blend in perfectly, often times no one ever suspects they aren’t at all what they seem to be. Even when in disguise as human, gods tend to have that little something about them that make them stand out. Because of this, they seem to attract humans like insects to the light. And perhaps in the case of gods, that is what we indeed seem like. Demi-gods It may come a surprise to some, but gods sometimes do dally with humans. In fact, some gods seem to make a habit of doing it. The children born of these relationships are known as demi-gods. The powers these children inherit from their divine parents varies, but all are known to have an unusually long - if not immortal - lifespan. Here’s some facts about our little sunshine rogue, Takumi Arai!

Dislikes any super sweet food and drinks.

He likes theme parks, especially roller coasters.

He’s an excellent swimmer, he even got a scholarship for it.

He loves trying out different types of new food, bizarre or not.

He loves superheroes AND villains.

He's a human, so here's a little thing about humans!

But what caliber of scholar would I be if I did not at discuss the most prevalent race, humans? Humans are a populous race, but very weak compared to the many supernatural races. Here’s a few facts about our dreamy musician Shinji:

When deep in thought Shinji tends to hum random songs he knows, he doesn’t realise he does this.

He dislikes it when people are stubborn about something for no logical reason.

He loves meat. Any kind of meat. He’s a huge carnivore, so he can’t live without it.

Because of how he looks most people don’t realise that Shinji is a genius, he has an IQ of 186.

Video games. He’s got a huge collection that he accumulated through the years. Has dedicated game nights with Shou (and sometimes Takumi too).

So here’s a tiny bit on mages:

Most humans who are born with magical powers are called mages. There are a few different mage bloodlines, but not all of the children born within the bloodlines are born with the ability to use magic. Here’s some little facts about our guy #2 Tatsuya:

He prefers foods that are below room-temperature naturally. He typically puts even foods that are served hot regularly in the freezer to cool them.

He’s the oldest of three children. He has a younger brother and sister.

He likes his coffee strong, really strong to keep him going through the night. “As black as the abyss,“ as Shinji likes to say.

Dislikes being in the sun for too long, he gets sunburnt very easily.

Hates hot and spicy foods.

Tatsuya is a type of dragon, here’s a little bit about them:

Dragons are elegant, mystical creatures that are rarely seen by anyone. Yet, somehow, there is proof of them mixing with humans. There is a dragon clan who lives largely in secret - the Ryu - who claim to be dragon brethren. Yet they appear human! When I questioned their heritage however, I was only greeted with mysterious, all-knowing smiles. It would seem that the Ryu keeps some sort of secret knowledge harboring the birth of their clan and will not allow any outsiders to delve further. So here’s a little something about Shou:

He is known as “The Drama King“ around school.

As a bird, he thinks KFC is a sin.

Loves to go to the beach but can’t swim.

A slut for peaches. Will insta-buy peach products.

As we’ve mentioned before, Shou actually comes from a race called Phoenixes. Here’s a little bit more about this fiery race:

Phoenixes are a proud and powerful race, best known for their affinity with fire. They are said to have been the first beings born of fire. In the past they had the ability to be reborn from the flames and ashes, but it has been lost in time. Day 0: Your Mystic Destiny Begins

there's some things i want to say about this post and all the character teasers if you click read more, but the important note to make is that i'm missing some images for this right now but i still want to publish the post on the right day, so i just won't be including them for now! also possible spoilers for the games in the read more, you've been warned.

And so the final day of our countdown is here! Have you been teased enough? Are you ready?

Huh? What just happened? Looks like we got a glitch…

Well, we’re not sure what happened, this might take a week or two to fix, but since you’ve been so patient, we’ve decided to do a full character reveal!

finally concluding the initial character reveals! for anyone who knows the characters, you'll probably see the resemblance between the final character designs and these ones. and yes, the suspicious ginger man smiling at the top of the post is galinn.

unfortunately, i don't have two images from this original post. there's meant to be one above and one below the image of galinn, assuming the wayback machine was showing me all of the images it couldn't load. i think i may have seen this full post before, but i don't remember where and i hadn't archived then, either because the original tumblr blog was still up or because i saw it back when i was solely interested in information about the game's characters and not so much in development. i only checked the wayback machine for this post, but since i'd collected everything from the other character teasers a long time before i looked for this day 0 post, i couldn't remember how i managed to find them all. if i have some time to kill (probably after the summer this year), i'll try finding the missing images to complete this post.

oh, and if you were wondering, i'm pretty sure the missing images were just glitchy text that hinted at something, like galinn be able to see people interacting with the post. i don't really remember the exacts though, so don't quote me on that.

the other thing is that i tried keeping these posts as close to the original posts as possible, like keeping wording like "we present" instead of changing it to "i present" since there's only one person running this archive.

i did make one pretty major change to the posts, which was basically just deleting all mention of the game's kickstarter. i didn't want a situation where someone manages to stumble across a post mentioning the kickstarter and then get confused when there wasn't one, or think that i was trying to act like this was my game and was in the process of starting a kickstarter campaign for it. this whole countdown was to the kickstarter, and day 0 was posted at the same time as the kickstarter announcement! (i think, i don't actually know since i didn't bother looking at any of the kickstarter posts o-o;;;)

and since this may be the only post where all the guys' original designs are, i might as well talk about them all together here! i'll be mentioning a little bit of trivia from one of serendipity of aeons' art books as well, and i plan on making a full post comparing the different art books (there are two, their content overlaps in some places and differs in others).

shou was the first character drawn and written for in the game's development. he was originally an "oresama" type and managed to do a complete 180 by the time development ended (reminded me a bit of riddle from twst who went from immature brat to serious rule-follower). i think shou's original design definitely gives off untouchable cool guy, it's almost unbelievable that he turns into the absolute sweetheart in the game lol. the original definitely makes shou being a party guy seem more believable (i remember telling my irl friend after we played his route together that shou's the super popular life of the party type of guy and she got so shocked bc his final design looked so innocent)

apparently, tatsu was meant to look younger than his age, which i can definitely see in this design. while it definitely got dropped for his final design, he does look a little younger in his confession cg by the fountain. i think one thing i particular i love about his original design is the way his lips were drawn. i think they're sooooo cute!!! in that confession cg, they're drawn in a similar way to the original design and whenever i see it i squeal. i call them "lizard lips" bc it reminds me of a lizard's smile, and also slightly of toothless and light fury from httyd (like yeji from itzy). i also think kayo and sakuko have similar smiles to original design tatsu and always sob at how adorable they look when they show up in the game (litr the ideal adorable younger sis... also hikki's got similar lips but i don't want him as a younger sister)

i love shinji so much, both old and new <3 his original design was made with basically all his key character traits in mind: a calm, mysterious genius with a rocker vibe and fashion loosely based on japanese visual kei. i have to agree with the note in the art book that his current design portrays him better, but they both have a special place in my heart!! the only other detail that really sticks out about shinji's design is that his original design has the dyed bits looking more red, like described in some trivia on the old blog and in the game, but the final design definitely looks more pink than red, and while i do have a history of being absolute shit at identifying colours in people's hair, i've heard at least three people also say that his hair looks more pink than when it's described as red in game. but either way, pink or red, i love it :)

from the way he's described in the art book, original taku just sounds like final shou. an innocent lil guy who doesn't have a single troublemaking bone in his body. but then they decided to change things up with the childhood friend troupe and ta-dah! the quirky rouge we all know and love was born. it's not mentioned in the art book, but taku actually had a two design changes: one being the change from innocent to troublemaker and the other being quite minor, with just a few changes to his facial features. i think the change is quite noticeable between all three designs that were featured on the blog, and in-between taku did feature in a few of the art/sprite response posts, though i don't know which of the two updated designs were used in the official game art for the main menu and banners (i suspect his final one as the in-between design has slightly bluer eyes)

hikaru was the project's local design problem child lmao. he's just too complex of a character smh (hikki is like my inner monologue's daily punching bag, my teasing is my affection for him and it reflects in my ocs). hikki actually has three designs like taku, but the difference between all three is definitely more noticeable than taku's. the final design for him was decided to be the most accurate to what xel had in mind while creating him, and they were all relieved when the true hikki finally stepped up. the in-between design for hikaru is like his original design in the updated art style, but the final design is definitely the one that most screams "HIKARU" to me, especially considering how the in-between design looks like the youngest of all the love interests when hikki is meant to be the oldest by a few years. while the in-between design isn't used within the game as a sprite, it's actually the design used on the official main menu and banner art, and the sprite is used for the cover of hikaru's "before i met you" story!

Day 1: Radiance

It’s the last day before the full reveal! We are pleased to present our final guy, Hikaru Kazama!

The ever-charming Hikaru hails from a time long past. In a time where the supernatural and the human worlds were one in the same, he was born to a goddess and human.

Due to a certain chain of events, he was sealed away for hundreds of years until waking up three years ago. Now Hikaru strives to see and do everything in this new world. But he still prefers things that remind him of the time he lost long ago, though rarely will one catch him without a smile plastered on his face.

“Sometimes I miss the days gone past. But I don’t regret protecting the people I love. I just wish I could find a reason for why I still exist in this world.”

Day 2: The Quirky Rogue

The next day brings us the superhuman who isn’t supernatural, Takumi Arai!

The free-spirited Takumi comes from a family that is well-aware of the supernatural influence in the world. However, they’ve cautioned Takumi against getting involved with the world he finds so fascinating.

Though Takumi respects his family’s reasons, he has no intention of cutting ties with the supernatural world. In order to keep up with these beings, he has taken up daggers, knives and parkour. Takumi trains hard and excels at these skills so that he can keep up with the “investigations” he undertakes in his spare time.

As a child, Takumi Arai used to play detective games with our dearest MC-chan before she moved away. Now, unwittingly reuniting with his childhood friend in college, he aspires to become a detective that will solve cases for both humans and supernaturals.

“I wanna know everything, see and do everything! But more than anything, I want to solve problems for people - both human and supernatural.”

Day 3: Let the Unseen Be Seen

We bring you another guy who has been eagerly waiting to meet you: Shinji Hirayama!

Even with being born into a family with a long history of producing exceptional mages, Shinji stands out. As an elemental mage, he’s one of the few in his family who learned how to control all four elements. But thanks to his appearance, this dreamy genius with a talent for music is often perceived as a slacker by others - not that he minds.

One other talent sets Shinji apart from the rest of this family: the fact that he is an esper. When he was a child, a certain event caused Shinji to gain the ability to see and talk to spirits, thus giving him esper powers. Set adrift between this world and the next one, he tries to help as many spirits as he can along the way. Shinji decided to go to college to set his parent’s mind at ease - to prove that he isn’t getting lost among the dead.

“The world is far more beautiful than most ever notice. But if they paused for just a second they might find themselves seeing everything with new eyes.”

Day 4: Here Be Dragons

We bring you bachelor number two: Tatsuya Yukimura!

Tatsuya considers himself an intellectual, but when he isn’t concentrating on his studies he tends to run a little hot and cold. As the eldest son of the esteemed Yukimura family, Tatsuya is having a hard time dealing with their loss of wealth. To lessen his family’s financial burden he works part time to put himself through college.

Even as a child Tatsuya was always very focused and serious. He’s become even more so with the current state of his family, as he rarely finds time to relax. Tatsuya himself carries pride in being one of the dragon-hybrids of the Ryu clan. Despite that, he still lacks the confidence to become the scion of the Yukimura family himself.

“I refuse to believe that appearance or even intelligence have anything to do with success. Diligence is the only thing that I recognize.”

Day 5: Welcome to Our World

First up is the loveable Shou Hatori!

Shou is a popular and confident college student who lives to socialize. As the youngest child with adult siblings, Shou never really got the attention he felt he deserved. Although he can come off as cocky, he’s also very sweet and truly cares for his friends.

Though Shou appears human, he is actually apart of a mystical race of pyromancers called Phoenixes. Unfortunately, Shou is unskilled at pyromancy and he believes it’s just one more reason his parents are disappointed in him. He dreams of one day proving to his parents that he is capable, both as an adult and a phoenix.

“My plan for college? Have fun, get drunk, and party until I get so rich and famous everyone will HAVE to notice how awesome I am.”
