Wow! Never seen those before. I have only seen a photographed sketch of Cosmos drawn this way. They look awfully like the four autographed sketches Tobita sold together with the brochure as a special package, so I guess they are like them? Also, Shizuku is wearing her princess styled dress!!! I would love to see if there are anymore pictures <3

I found these off of Aucfan and these were sold during 2012. I think these were limited edition signatures.

That is good to know. To be honest I am more concerned about the concept art because I have to clean it up.

An idea of a completed (and translated) page. This is pretty much how the character pages look in the archive. I sadly cannot find the fond they used so I’m just stretching the default photoshop ones. Almost all the character profiles, the introduction page and one of the “interviews” are done for now. I guess I’ll upload them in parts.

They say that to make a comic book character recognisable you have to keep two key elements intact- the eyes and the hair. After seeing so many manga images and how much the eyes were different in the Season 1/2 images, I finally found one manga-styled image that has somewhat similar eye design the S1/2 character designs. Won’t complain, those designs grew on me now.

I will be honest. I have never watched Sakura Wars. Past its first season at least. I couldn’t get into it for some reason. Maybe the harem with shounen style is what threw me off? I honestly cannot tell. But after going through their character designs, Shinji Tobita really kept his word when saying that he loved this series. Wow!

The first two girls for example are Sakura Shinguji and Erica Fontaine, the first girls to appear in Sakura wars and Sakura wars 3 respectively. Sakura is pretty much the face of the whole franchise (despite Ogani being the main protagonist, hell this is a harem game!) and some of her character poses were used as bases for the old website graphics. Erica though has more than a design similarity; she is a nun in training who works as a cabaret dancer at a night club. Sounds familiar? The rest are the closest I could find that resembled or straight out had a Papillon Rose counterpart. The most obvious ones are Lobelia Carlini with Papillon Dhalia (She starts off as a villain and joins the Paris flower division later in the story. These two even share a voice actress!), Ikki Yoneda with the pub manager (He is the manager of the Troupe’s theatre) and Maria Tachibana with Adonis (Otokoyaku actress of Teikoku Kagekidan). 

Sumire Kanzaki with Lupinus is merely a suggestion though, as she is Maria’s musumeyaku counterpart in the in-series plays, so it makes sense to me. Please do not take my word to heart. With the same logic the moe characters Iris and Coquelicot can be seen as an inspiration for Petit Rose, but only in the sense that a small character is needed in a way or another (lol). As for the girls resembling Lily and Margarette, these are the closest designs I could find for them. Through the purple haired girl only has glasses similar to Shizuku’s.

Other similarities with Sakura Wars that caught my attention were the villain in the first game being called the Hive of Darkness (All of the Dinasty troops were named after bee terminology) and having four main generals one of which has the appearance of a 10 year old boy for some reason (same case for Sister Pchela). There’s also a minor character named Dandy Boss (Dandy Lion).

All of that or I’m just nitpicking. On a closing note, the translations of the first archive are coming along nicely so far. I have been checking them out with many different grammar sites to make sure they are accurate. The only thing that is taking time are the graphics. I really have to reink and organise everything and even the simplest picture takes some time to be made. Please bear with me, whoever is reading this. xoxo

Long time no see~~

Hey whoever is reading this. I did not forget about my blog or artwork ^_^ I just wanted to wait until the new Papillon Rose website expired to start working again. The reason was a small notice it had forbidding the reposting of the official pictures. I don’t know if the rule applies at all, since official pictures were all over the internet since the old days (which I have no idea if they had any warnings or not since the old domain is now protected and wayback machine cannot access it), and the Papillon Rose wikia has a lot of them uploaded there for quite some time. Then again it is a wikia, so I guess encylopedia-type use is justified. I’m not directly uploading anything official in most cases, but I do trace official artwork most of the time. So my work is not 100% clean (no pun intended) in regard to the notice. Still, I have a better concience to do what I do while knowing that any sites with regulations are down. With that said, I am basically back in the game. Expect more stuff from the old artbook sooner than before! xoxo

I have to say, I’m very surprised when I come across stuff like this. For any obscure(or not) old anime actually. Behind the scenes stuff and unused materials? those things are to die for right? loling.

These are some interesting pictures from what I can assume is from the unreleased New seasons DVD boxes. We already know the fifth DVD would feature the Susanno sisters because of the promotional flyer we got to see for it. We also know they would wear the main characters’ maiden outfits on the cover, so why not include an illustration with the respective lingerie? What is even more interesting is the very obvious parallel outfits that match the other illustration; Suu wears Lily’s lingerie, while on the other one she wear’s Anne’s maid outfit. Same thing goes for Miki with Tsubomi’s clothes and Ran with Shizuku’s. You could say they probably wanted them to have more matching personalities with the girls (Miki’s “a skimpier girl than me running around?” in the first episode is still both funny and cringey) but the new season didn’t really get to unveil that. I don’t really care though. I already said New season is my least favorite of the Papillon Rose franchise. Tons of wasted potential. The sketches have some very obvious gaps that imply the girls’ positions in the final composition. Since a sketch of that did not seem to be found, I worked it around some photoshop.

*sighing Writing all this maked me wish more bts stuff from the original Papillon Rose website existed. But it was doujinshi. In professional works, those stuff get leaked all the time, possibly to save the studio or company in secrecy somehow or simply for people to collect through self publishing. Considering that Minoboshi Tarou doesn’t have any more plans for Papillon Rose, we will probably never see sketches or old ideas from back then. It’s kinda sad actually.

Thoughts on Papillon Rose: New Season

I’ll be honest here, the New Season series is something that I can’t claim to enjoy watching. Sure, it was a huge thing on the Papillon Rose history. A fanfiction net anime turned OVA turning into an actual anime TV series is awesome on its own. But assuming reality ensued with the cencorship laws, nothing from the original series was used, save for the small joke/reference to the series when Rama blocked Rose from using the Pinky Vibrator and even saying the work “Viagra”. From then, it just seems to be an anime about otaku culture. But not anime otakus; otakus about anything. The three guys documenting the episodes reflect this a lot, especially the guy with the camera who seems to be a moving wikipedia. He knows everything about the parts of the monsters the girls are fighting and makes up names for them. While it does sound fascinating in theory, it feels so out of place and sloppy, especially in a series originally meant to poke fun at magical girl series with a bunch of borderline naughty elements. And the girls? Oh boy. I don’t think they serve as nothing else other than being there -just- to battle and to look pretty. And they are definitely not the magical girl caricatures of the original series; the New season versions are as flat as a cardboard character wise. Tsubomi is a nymphomanical clumsy bimbo in the original, Anne is described as an airhead and comes very close as she sleeps around but keeps a steady relationship with the pub manager, Shizuku starts out as a shy nerd but is immediately revealed to be a closet pervert who prefers masturbation over sex. None of those elements are shown in the TV series, not even cencored somehow to fit the TV cencorship laws. To quote a reviewer, New season took out the naughtiness the original series presented and left a plain and uninteresting magical girl series. I do agree with this, but I would add that it added some very unnecessary elements and tried desperately to appeal to otakus by giving them something they thought they would enjoy. With this, they sacrificed a lot that had to be there including the girls’ own characters, making it indeed a very uninteresting series. After the revelation of Minoboshi Tarou being Shinji Tobita and his article on the Papillon Rose phenomenon, he said that he didn’t like New Season because that was not how he envisioned Papillon Rose. And if the old claims from the BBS board really say that Pink Company was left out from the TV series production, this makes his words even stronger, The only thing I enjoyed was the OST...which was not in the american release because of reasons! Oh boy~

While searching for Papillon Rose merchandise on online stores last year, I stumbled upon this card image on a package sold together with the collectable CD Rom and the Papillon Rose archive. While the package was sold out, the image was still there. It was always a mystery for me as to what it actually was, as phone cards were issued by Face.inc only during the OVA promotion years in 2003. Then I searched on the wayback machine and found a line of text mentioning laminated cards to be sold in 2001′s Summer Comiket. Seeing the semi-transparent edges of the card, this is probably one of them! The images used are quite interesting, as the specific manga image of Papillon Rose is never seen anywhere in the old website. It bears a very small resemblance to Ai Hanazono’s fax sketch but nothing else. The image of the anime version of Papillon Rose exists on a higher resolution, as it was used in the March wallpaper before Papillon Lily’s. In that image, she was joining cheeks with an image of Papillon Margarette. The text is a little hard to read. but when cleaned up it seems to say  “Papillon Rose ♥Limited Edition Comic Market 2001 your papillon make up(?)” and a heart with 15

Found this and recalled the image immediately. Seems like even Shinji Tobita paid homage to movie posters.

Luna isn't supposed to be a mentor figure and she definately not as mature as you may think. The "big sis" trope is more appropriate to her character. She is mostly scolding Usagi for her lifestyle instead of giving her helpful advice and as proven in the movie, points out a lot of Usagi's flaws, which is both rude and immature from Luna's end of the stick, even if it is played for laughs.

For the older crush, blame the author for making a story for young girls that follows real life and doesn't get a good ending. (Because every story MUST have a good ending, right?)

Kakeru didn't see Luna transform into a girl and the whole scene was like a dream to him. He didn't connect the girl next to him with Luna but saw her as Princess Kaguya, and that is why he liked her. The comparison to Dia who actually saw Luna talking as a cat is invalid. That's your opinion. There are people who have a soft spot for animals and would at least call an animal organisation to nurse them back to health. This doesn't mean they get aroused by them.

People who say Luna sounds “too young” in Viz’s redub must not know or have forgotten she has a kitten in SuperS from the future and a teenage girl human form in the S movie. (which is her canon age)

Design-wise, last time I checked Usagi doesn't look like a 15 year old girl in the S movie either. Does that mean they need voices that sound like british nannies?

On Luna's age, every teenager goes through a phase of a crush on an older person This is exactly what Luna is going through. Same thing happened with Naru and Nephrite during the first season.

And fyi, if you payed any attention to the movie's plot, Luna's love was one sided and that's why she was so heartbroken. Kakeru was in love with Himeko. So calling him pedo is invalid.

And wow, I didn't know that if I took care of an ill, possibly stray cat I would instantly be a furry fetishist.
