I’m beside myself. My girls from RissaGoosman and RoadkillJack arrived on the same day! I’ve been getting to know them ever since. This couldn’t have happened at a better time. I really really needed the presence of these girls in my life. Thank you so much, you guys.
On the left is Little Miss Jack, found dead in an Ohio forest by Rissa. To the right is Ellie, found as roadkill with a broken neck south of Memphis by Jack. The bottom photo is of a Wildwood Tarot card and three totems; a desert rose (selenite) representing Mind, a coyote vertebra representing Body, and a pawprint stone (quartz perhaps?) representing Spirit. I have an extensive coyote altar and will be doing a lot of rearranging to make these girls feel right at home.

You guys !! I’m so excited right now. These babies are freshly tattooed on the hands of the stellar witch who adopted my cat skull from a few months back. It was true love, obviously! The skull on the left is her other familiar, a bat. Check out her Insta: https://www.instagram.com/p/BPL7cfXFjaT/

thats neat! thank you for taking the time to explain what you personally felt. hope it didnt seem like i wanted to argue or anything, just genuinely curious.
NP! You didn’t sound confrontational at all. I only went overboard with such a long response because it’s something I’ve thought a lot about but had never written down. I was happy to do it!

hi! i was browsing your blog and you seem to not like/dont want any bones from animals that were hunted. im new to this community and ive seen it a few times but nobody has explained it to me. do you mind explaining why you dont like hunted/trapped animal stuff?
It’s absolutely all personal preference so what follows is only opinion. When it comes to my own shop, I work with whatever I find dead. That’s what the “vulture” in Vulture Culture means to /me/. Though it’s always easier to buy animal bits in bulk online or from local hunters, fellow vultures specialize in scavenging either for the fun and challenge of it, for reasons they consider moral, or both. What I gather is mostly roadkill, feral cat kills, old bones and antler found on their own, etc. but I can’t know how all of them met their end. If I find an animal in the wilderness it may very well have been poisoned or shot. I’m fine with collecting them not knowing, but I don’t personally pay anyone for animal parts (unless paying a fellow vulture for something scavenged that I’ll be keeping myself, as in my last post).
It isn’t that I villainize hunting. In many cases I admire the idea, but there are a lot of factors. The hunter, their chosen prey, why they’re hunting, their skill level, their level of respect for what they’re doing… These things can’t always be known and they make or break my enthusiasm for animal remains.
For me, a lot of it comes down to my very general mixed-bag paganism. If I keep remains in my own home for personal use and enjoyment, I get the most out of them if I feel human interference in their death was minimal. My paganism is animal-centric, slightly misanthropic at times, bleeding heart to some degree. It’s just me! I may very well take down a deer to feed my own family one day, while still questing for deer bones on the side of the road.

Fun Fact: a rat broke into my tub of animal bits drying in cornmeal outside. He ate a lot of cornmeal but only made off with one of the bits. Unfortunately, it was the only one I planned to keep for myself - the mink tail. I guess nature had other plans! Honestly, I went too long without checking on those so let this serve as a reminder to anyone else with bits to check on. Oh well. A grouse wing, two grouse feet, and two minky paws will be up soon! Not to mention all the deer bones craftified and otherwise.
I’ll admit, it’s been bitter cold and I work full time now so I’ve been putting off a lot of this stuff til stints of better weather. Although, I’ve been slowly realizing that not minding the boneyard really gets to me. Doing this work fulfills and rewards a part of me that few things can. It’s in my blood, and I’m stoked to get back at it ASAP.

Are you gonna be selling that cat skull or keeping it for a personal object...? I've been trying forever to get a kitty skull from a trusted source (I worry too much getting domestic animals from people I don't know or trust, don't want them to be killed intentionally) but it's been hard ;w; if not, I can't wait to see them in your collection
I’m so sorry I never saw this ask! and I have no idea how old it is because Tumblr doesn’t share such information. but, kitty skull was sold very soon after showing her off here and I should really go back and edit old posts to reflect that. She was bought as a gift for someone working with a cat familiar and now lives with a bat skull friend and I just love that she’s being so appreciated. I did do an above-ground burial in a pinch of a cat some time after (same summer) and have been meaning to go back to the spot and see what bones remain, if any. I stumble across cats semi-regularly and can definitely shoot you a message the next time I have a skull on hand in case you’re still on the lookout. I really appreciate your interest!
I totally get you about being nervous buying bones and that’s the reason I still don’t have a coyote skull (my #1 most coveted item) even though they’re actually available everywhere and for cheap, because I really need to know that she wasn’t culled or trapped. It can be an arduous search looking for bones free of any negative vibes but it’s always a super rewarding thing in the end! This is what prompted me to start Mutt’s Boneyard. It was selfishly for my own benefit initially, and now I offer what I can to others who feel the same.

hi there! new vulture here:) just a quick question, why do most vultures interrupt the name of an animal (ex. rac/coon, c-at, etc.) when talking about their deads?
Hope this answers as the right blog, otherwise I’ll just reblog it from myself. :P To be honest, I’ve never beheld this phenomenon! I certainly haven’t done it myself. If I had to take a guess, it would be that vultures may not want to surprise people searching for, say, cat-related posts on Tumblr with photos of a skinned cat or some such. Just a guess though! Now I’m curious too.

Hello! I work for my school’s natural history collections so I understand all the laws and have all the permits I need to care for my dead things. This piece is not a personal collection piece but the schools.

the skull of the black roadkill cat in my dermestid beetle tank. i’m so happy to finally have some beetles, i finally got them from the awesome @mysticmutt after having wanted to buy some for almost a year. i’m excited to see the colony grow and watch how fast they can clean bones, they’ve already done some good work on this cat in just a day.
before putting it in the tank i removed the eyes, tongue, and as much flesh as i could.
