alaridtravers:
The jinx that would turn her kneecaps inside out was at the forefront of his mind, and he executed it without warning, and to make it as strong as possible, verbally.
“Five points. Your turn!”
Tumblr media
Mulciber didn’t want a turn. Torture at his own hand -- or wand, rather -- made his stomach church uncomfortably. As the girl writhed in pain on the floor, grasping at her knees and whimpering, he stepped forward anyway, rolling up his sleeves. His eyes narrowed in on the young woman’s name tag. Lisa. But that hadn’t been her name when they had known her.
“Five points is generous for such a sleight. Don’t you think, Vicky?” Mulciber smirked, licking his dried lips, as if to incite something that would overthrow the numbness that had convoluted his mind. He was familiar with the imperius curse, so much so that he often felt he was under its effects when he cast it himself. Foggy, despondent, tied to the mind of his victim so deeply, so intensely--- As the young blonde sat up, her expression vacant but for the ghost of her commander in her eyes, Usi felt as though he could have been looking in the mirror. She moved forward through her commands as he often did, with an air of elegance and detachment, of indifference in spite of the gravity of it all.
Her tolerance for difficult commands, however, was not nearly as great.
“Mmph,” Vicky mumbled in frustration as her hands fiddled with dials, only shaking when the bottom of the Anchovy’s large oven began to glow. Mulciber couldn’t see himself in her eyes any longer; there was only terror, pure and free---
CLANG!
Mulciber threw the witch back away from the oven, allowing her to collide with and shatter the shakers on the counter behind her as he turned. Another man stood in the doorway to the back of house, the dishes he had just washed still echoing their clatter against the tile floor. He stared dumbly at the trio with eyes as wide as the saucers at his feet.
“My mistake,” Mulciber apologized to Travers as he summoned the wizard’s wand and tossed it to his comrade. Normally, he wasn’t so sloppy; he would have cased out the restaurant any other night. “Easily fixed,” he said as the young intruder turned and ran back through the door. At Mulciber’s command, Vicky chased after him, and in a matter of moments, was dragging him back into the cafe by the collar as he made a plea for mercy.
It was far too late for that.
Mulciber spun his wand between his fingers again and watched, in a daze, as the sink filled with water. It was only when Vicky dunked her co-worker’s head under the water that he turned away, holding up his hand to shield himself from the water that splashed in their direction. The first few cries of desperation were exciting, but the thrill faded quickly, especially as the fuss beneath the waves settled to nothing. Mulciber sighed. His fun was over with.
“I’ll---clean up.” He swallowed hard as he lifted  his curse from Vicky, and grimaced even harder as the corpse she had created slid from her now limp grasp at the edge of the sink onto the ground. “Rack up all the points you want,” Mulciber told Travers, levitating the young man’s body back through the door he had come through in the first place. He followed, bracing himself for the shrill screams he would be hearing in a matter of seconds. “I’ve no use for her.”

marymacxx:
It had been an average day of work for Mary. Not particularly bad, not particularly good. Just an ordinary day filled with both ups and downs. She had been giving the task of closing up the Golden Bludger for the night, and so after the last guests had left—staggering out of the pub in the wee hours of the morning—she went about cleaning and then locking up. She had just turned the key to secure the front door when she felt a pair of eyes on her. It was a cool, blustering night, so at first she thought that perhaps she was simply imagining the feeling. Late-night anxiety and all that. It was only when she turned and saw the hooded figure that she realized this was no mirage.
The young witch felt as though the air had been kicked out her lungs. Usi Mulciber. The very person she hoped never to see. The person whose whispered voice was the narrator of most of her nightmares. She stood frozen, unable to move, to think. Her eyes bore into his but she said nothing. Perhaps if she wasn’t so tired, if she wasn’t aware of how incredibly vulnerable she was out there on her own… Perhaps then she could have thought of something to say. But no words came to her.
Tumblr media
Now that he was there, Mulciber wasn’t sure what had brought him. Mary Macdonald hadn’t crossed his mind in a long while, but there was something about the October night that had drawn him to her, that propelled him to cross the street and close the distance between them. If only he could figure out what it was.
But he had time.
Tumblr media
“Walk with me.” And then, with a twist of his wand, he ensured that she had no choice but to do exactly that.

“I may no longer be a Black, but I do work for a living.” She said. “I’m not afraid of you, Usi. But, you should be afraid of me. Because just like everyone else, you underestimate me and what I’m capable of. But, if you push me? You’ll realize that the Sorting Hat put me in Slytherin for a reason. And you don’t want to find out why.” She snapped.
“I’m not someone you want to mess with.” Mulciber was someone who infuriated her because he represented the life she ran away from.
Tumblr media
Words were empty, so far as Mulciber knew---but he also knew where Andromeda came from. He had seen Bellatrix’s wrath more than enough times to know what temper was hidden in the Black family’s genetic code. All the same, Andromeda was nothing but a coward to him. A coward who had ran, and who would continued to run. Though her words pinched a nerve at first, he brushed it off quickly with that thought.
“On the contrary,” Mulciber said with a wink. “I’m eager to find out.”
And with a quick turn, he was gone.

Narcissa was undeniably happy for their union, but that wasn’t enough to stop her from worrying about Vivien.  The reason for his sudden decision to get married remained unclear to her, perhaps someday, after the wedding, she would ask him about it, but not now wasn’t the time for that.
She looked into his eyes, wondering if he had told her the truth, the whole truth. “Vivien has a heart of gold, she has been through a lot lately, Usi… She deserves to be happy.”
Tumblr media
Usi disagreed. The universe didn’t deal out happiness according to deservedness, or weigh it against trials and tribulations. Happiness was earned, worked for, sought. “Mm,” he said noncommittally. “I suppose I could be lightening the load. Financially at least.” Usi was no bookkeeper, especially not for the Dark Lord, but he was no stranger to the Travers’ difficulties, though he had never pried for the details.

“Tone it down a notch, Janice,” Rita briskly told the younger witch next to her, who paused mid-click, and, apparently unable to resist, took one last photo with a solitary phoom noise.
“Why, very much, thank you! And can I just say, you make quite the dapper groom, sir, congratulations!”
Tumblr media
Mulciber held his smile while his eyes glared daggers at the young photographer, but he swept this look away quickly as he engaged with Rita once more. “You’re too kind, but I think you ought to be complimenting my wife instead, don’t you?” The word still tasted foreign on his tongue, though he was sure that wasn’t the only reason he detested it. “She orchestrated the whole thing, and so beautifully at that.”

Usi Mulciber was a married man. He contemplated this as he walked, under the cover of both night and his heavily hooded robe. While his new wife slept soundly, he walked through the streets of Puddlemere, a restless air stirring both his own reckless nature, and the whole of the village. Fliers from the beginning of term at the Puddlemere Institute had begun to peel away from walls and lampposts. They danced in the wind now, as if they knew what was coming.
As if they knew, and wanted to escape before they became a witness.
Tumblr media
Suddenly, Usi stopped, and the breeze circulating all around seemed to stop with him. He had found her, the person he had come to see. Now he just needed her to find him, too. He waited, silent, watching, anticipating the moment she would catch his face amid the darkness.

“Are you pleased with this all?”
Tumblr media
“Yes, dear, you did a wonderful job.”
Dear. It was bizarre that he had a wife now. He itched for Holden, for someone to talk it over with. What would his life be like now? What would change? Not much could, could it? Usi swallowed hard and focused on Vivien’s jewelry.

“It will take the entire afternoon if you don’t keep still, Usi.” Narcissa reprehended him, scrutinising the robe with narrowed eyes.
“That sleeve is uneven.” She said to the seamstress pointing to the right sleeve.
The witch turned her attention to her dear friend with a sweet expression on her face. “I was right, you know, about you and Vivien.”
Tumblr media
Usi kept his gaze straight ahead, his expression unreadable as he contemplated the situation. Yes, Narcissa had hoped that Vivien and him would end up together, but he was sure that if she knew all the sordid details, she wouldn’t consider it as grand an accomplishment as she did now.
“You were right, yes,” Usi smiled, because, in a sense, she was. “How does it feel?”

Andromeda could feel the rage rising. Very few people could incite her anger so quickly, but Mulciber knew which buttons to press. “You are very close to sporting an unattractive shiner, Usi. And then how would that look? Imagine when your friends ask you how you got a black eye, and you have to tell them you incited the wrath of the exiled Black sister. I’d pay galleons to see that.”
Tumblr media
Mulciber clucked his tongue against the roof of his mouth and grinned, though he was already gripping the handle of his wand in preparation for a quick exit. He didn’t want to be seen with Andromeda, no matter the circumstances, and if she was going to make a scene---
“It’s a pity you don’t have galleons to pay, or we could have struck a deal,” he drawled, tipping his hat at her as he backed away. “Perhaps the next time we meet, you can say differently.”

alaridtravers:
Who the fuck eats pizza at eleven, he wanted to yell. Already his nerves were shot, not out of anxiety or fear, but rather a blood-pumping adrenaline rush that never failed to pin-prick at his skin, and heat him to boiling point the moment someone said something remotely infuriating. Travers, in Appleby, was already angry.
He hadn’t seen her face in quite some time, but just as they had her, she would recognize them eventually. She’d tried hard to change her appearance. Her hair, though a dirty blonde, sported unmistakable brunette roots she hadn’t taken the time to cover up. She had changed her eye color, her nose, he thought, or maybe it had always been that big.
“Nah,” he shook his head instead as he pointed his wand toward the door and locked it behind them. Not ready to tuck it away just yet he folded it between his arms, and took his place at Mulciber’s right to face her behind the counter.
Tumblr media
Mulciber had been thinking about this moment almost constantly since he’d run into Andromeda a few days prior. From the moment they’d happened upon the young woman in the pizza shop, from the very first moment they had recognized her as a long lost friend, Usi had known what Alarid wanted to do. It was the same instinct that Usi had, but caution had held him back. Now, though, there was nothing to stop them.
No matter what name she went by, what she had done to her appearance, she would always be a blood traitor.
“We’ve waited long enough, I think, don’t you, Alarid?” Mulciber asked. At the recognition of the name, her eyes darted upward, and the hands that had been so fixated on condiments flew for her wand---
---which flew into Usi’s waiting hand.
Tumblr media
“We won’t take up much of your time.”

Alohomora.
It was too easy, but Mulciber kept his mouth shut. The true challenge was still ahead; he would only need to be patient. They entered the Anchovy, Mulciber trailing behind Travers, twirling his wand in his hand like a baton.
Tumblr media
“Ahem.”
Through her disheveled blonde hair, the witch at the counter looked up. She didn’t seem too surprised to see them, though the door had been locked. Perhaps she didn’t remember doing it. “Shop’s closed,” she sang, turning her attention away from them as she tended to the salt and pepper shakers by hand. That alone made Mulciber’s lip curl. “We open at eleven tomorrow, come back then.”

“As is only appropriate for your birthday.” The pair stopped in front of the Funky Anchovy, a familiar place that their outings had taken them to many times before, though never quite this late. The restaurant was nearly empty, but for a single waitress at the counter, counting her tips. The neon signs in the windows had been dimmed for the night, but not the lights behind her.
“She’s the one?”

The enchanted parchment she was writing on would appear blank to the public eye, and she was grateful for that when she heard the voice of Usi Mulciber. Glaring at him, she replied. “And why is that, Mulciber? Why exactly shouldn’t I be in public?” She asked.
Tumblr media
“That’s not at all what I said,” Usi drawled. “Why should you be in a place where someone like me might show up?”
