We are excited to announce the release of "The Great Beefsteak Raid," the sixth print in Mort’s “A Tribute to the Legend” Series. Once again, Mort has found a subject that had never before been painted, featuring one of the most dramatic and underpublicized raids of the war. Confederate forces were besieged in Petersburg, Virginia and were suffering shortages of food supplies. Aware that his men were suffering from hunger, Gen. Wade Hampton decided on a very daring, dangerous raid. He stole an entire herd of nearly 2,500 head of cattle from the Union Army!
In Phase 1 of the progression, you can see Mort's final sketch on trace paper. Note the grid lines he drew to easily enable him to transfer the sketch to canvas. In the second photo, Mort has started to draw up the painting on to canvas.

The Making of a Masterpiece: Phase 1 "...none to caress"
We are excited to announce the release of the fifth print in Mort Künstler’s “Tribute to the Legend” Series. It features Stonewall Jackson watching his VMI cadets march in formation in front of what is now Mary Baldwin College in Staunton, Virginia. With Mort doing only four more paintings of the Civil War, it is likely that this is the last painting Mort will ever do of Jackson and the VMI cadets. Stay tuned for phases 2 and 3, and the exclusive online release on April 29.
1. This is Mort’s final charcoal sketch before working on the canvas. Note the grid lines Mort drew to enable him to easily transfer the sketch to canvas.
2. Mort has started to draw up the painting onto canvas.
3. A detail showing Jackson on Little Sorrel. Note the direction Jackson is looking.

Mort Künstler was obviously happy in this photo taken with Gary Libby, Curator, and John Surovek, Director of the Daytona Beach Museum of Arts and Sciences. It took place at the museum on the opening night, January 13, 1977, of the exhibition, “Mort Künstler: Master Illustrator.” It was the very first one-man show Mort Künstler had ever had!

Witness the official unveiling of Capitol Farewell, the third release in Künstler's final "A Tribute to the Legend" series and the 2013 Annual Snow Print. Mr. Künstler will sign prints in the Museum Shop and other Künstler memorabilia will be available for purchase.
"In 1995, I had my first one-man exhibition of original paintings at the North Carolina Museum of History in Raleigh. This was a special event where I unveiled and signed limited edition prints of the painting Winter Riders. That release was a huge success and after eighteen years, I will be having another show at the museum with more than thirty originals and another unveiling and print signing. What a pleasure this is for me, as my work continues to go full circle." -Mort Künstler
