Meet the new characters of Pain 'n Dave!
It is time.
Tumblr media
Alright, so I know that there is a lot going on in this picture with all of these characters but today we'll only be focusing on those new lot at the bottom since all of the characters before them will have a character showcase in the future, being pre-existing characters.
Okay, got all that? Let's meet some of these new characters!!
[Fun note for any of you newcomers: About 80% of these characters that you see in the portraits above you don't actually need to know about. This is all just fun worldbuilding that I like to do]
The Disciples of the Labyrinth Lord (Wontas, Rey'avh, Horoev)
Tumblr media
The Maze of Madness, or the Labyrinth Lord's Realm, was a realm once known to the demons. However, relations fell through and now the realm sits quietly, scheming its revenge against the demons who had betrayed them. The Disciples of the Labyrinth Lord carry out these machinations.
Wontas is the most magically-attuned but also the most frail. He's the only one of the trio who can speak, having learned to from listening to the screams of their prisoners. He sounds like a synthesizer being thrown down a flight of stairs.
Rey'avh is the most intelligent of the three, perhaps even the entire universe. He has concocted the most if not all of their operations such as the subjugation of the Vernak Peninsula.
Horoev is nothing more than a beast. The others wondered how he even got to their position, believing it to be a joke from their Lord. However, everything about Horoev is genuine. He is a monster; a ravenous animal who is motivated by nothing but food. Rey'avh has since found use for him by using him as... motivation for their prisoners.
Fun Fact: This is the first time I've ever colored the Disciples. For the longest time, they were just sketches since I didn't really know what color I wanted them to be and also they were kind of low priority since they won't really appear in any comics - they were made for a game in the first place. I also just sketched them out on a whiteboard first before they ever showed up digitally while I was on campus since I was bored.
Tumblr media
The Maggots
Tumblr media
A lot happens down in the Under-Cities of the Maggots. If only things were perfect for such a tide of worms...
Akstrom Big-Hat is a Bishop with a big hat and big ideas. She has been known to be a thorn on the other Bishops' sides, constantly challenging their ideas simply by having a big hat. It's the only reason she has and the only one she ever needs. The Arch Bishop would really like to strangle her some day but she has a big hat.
Irontooth is a chef who resides in the food-filled Under-City, Ma'fu. He's known throughout the tunnels for being one of the best chefs despite his attitude but he's also known for his remarkable lifespan, with some saying he has been blessed by their god, Yersinias. Irontooth is actually quite tired of this whole "theocracy" crap happening though. He lost his tail in a fight.
Big Head was once a regular Maggot. He was digging out a cave for his Under-City when a big rock hit him in the head. His head hurt but the other Maggots thought he suddenly became smarter. Now word spreads of a Maggot of grand intellect and others visit Big Head for his wisdom. The Arch Bishop, Kro'Gax, has also become wary of such rumors and wishes to stamp out this heretic creating a new group. Big Head has no idea what is happening.
Fun Fact: Irontooth was originally just a generic Maggot cook I drew for a sketch and then decided to turn into a regular character. Not unlike what happened with Beth Harbinger!

More of Pain's Family
Tumblr media
The Marauder Kin may be smaller in numbers than they were back in the day, but they're still alive and kicking. They enjoy more favor from the more-dominant Bog Demons (who were once their prey) but it's better than fighting a losing war against the Vundar Demons
Murmur is Pain's aunt. She spent a lot of time with Pain when he was younger and essentially acted as a mentor if not an additional parent figure to him. Pain basically got his sense of humor from her! Pain respects her dearly and always enjoys when she does reappear in his life. These days, Murmur just roams around Molagar looking for new and interesting things but will always come back to her family.
Bosch is one of Pain's cousins. He is an avid filmmaker, having made about twenty films and is currently working on his twenty-first one. He's still currently writing it. I think he wants to dabble in detective fiction now. Anyways, Bosch can be quite particular about his methods which can border on perfectionism at times. He loves his camera and is constantly seen maintaining whenever he can. For good reason too, the amount of times film has come back from it completely black is enough to drive any demon crazy. He still loves it regardless
Pieter is Bosch's older brother. He's not really big into filmmaking as his brother - he really only likes to watch movies occasionally (His favorite are action films, which Bosch doesn't really like). Despite that, Pieter tries to help his little brother as much as he can, finding Bosch's passion for filmmaking to be infectious. He acts as a stagehand for many of Bosch's films, holding equipment like microphones or lights. He also has to mediate tension between Bosch and his actors when Bosch gets frustrated during filming.
Fun Fact: Murmur's name comes from the 54th demon listed in the "Lesser Key of Solomon," Count/Duke Murmur. Also, Bosch and Pieter were inspired by "Home Movies". Bosch and Pieter are also Murmur's sons.

Rise of the Rackoleps
Tumblr media
Deep in the Northeast of Hell, a forest of mushrooms called the Largos Frontier grows. The fungi has been called many things, such as "Devil's Bane" or "Magic Eater" but it is most known as the Rackoleps. The dangerous properties of the Rackoleps has moved the Citadel to take action against the rapidly-spreading fungus, establishing a perimeter around the forest wherein Inhibitor units spray various poisons, flames, magic, and other would-be fungal killers. At first, it worked, but the Citadel noted an ever-increasing resistance to their efforts as the Rackoleps becomes more and more resistant towards their attempts.
However, unbeknownst to the general public, the Rackoleps has finally reached a critical point of its evolution: sentience. After having assimilated enough outside life, the mushroom can finally walk; talk. Think.
Mycelia, the Spore Queen is the firstborn of these so-called Rackoleps Demons. She towers over all life so that She may watch over Her kin; Her children. Her ultimate wish is to unify the Chaos Realm under the mushroom cap of the Rackoleps.
Cybin was one of the first Rackoleps people to have been created by the Queen. However, he would be the first to step outside of their fungal forest, for his purpose is to understand the world beyond. As he went on his observations, the voices of his family back home became quieter until he had traveled so far that all he heard was silence. Cybin still continues his mission however it is a lonely one. He wanders Molagar alone, depressed. Dying. He wonders how his family is doing back home.
Tumblr media
Fun Fact: The Spore Queen was probably the hardest I thought when it came to coming up with a character design; a lot of intention was put into Her design with the idea of making Her look beautiful yet alien. Gentle yet intimidating.
Tumblr media
Alright, I think that's pretty much everything when it comes to the "new characters". I put it in quotes because, for me, they're not actually that new. Relatively with the others? Yes, certainly, and they're definitely new to you, the reader since I didn't really have a chance, or will get the chance to, introduce them to you through the comics any time soon.
Hope you enjoyed this massive lore dump. That's the thing I like about this site. I can write about just whatever I damn please! Thanks, tumblr!! I'll see you all next time with the next character introduction of the Harbinger sisters! Now those are characters you should actually know about!

The PnD Portrait Yard is about to get bigger!
Tumblr media
Look at this piece of shit. Okay, sorry, it's not " a piece of shit"; I just like saying that phrase sometimes!
This is pretty much what I consider to be the mostly-definitive gathering of the named characters in Pain 'n Dave...
...as of October 2022. It's August 2023! The times have changed, god damn you! I drew more characters in that time frame than comics! Can you believe that?!
Anyways, these portraits have been sacred to me as this gathering of characters has practically been the one-stop place to see (almost) all of the characters I care about in the series and the ones you should know about. It's about time it got a fresh new batch of characters coming in.
"Boring Explanation of Where I've Been" Section
I guess I should also explain where I've been. I just got back from EVO 2023 (A lot of fun btw; I should talk about it here some time) and I need to prepare for the next semester but besides that, I've pretty much been out doing my own thing if we were to keep things within the scope of art and PnD-related things. I have a lot of stuff I really want to do but I'm kind of in that "inertia" phase where I really need something to push me out, y'know?
I know I have this whole character intro thing going on on this page and I still plan on continuing that. The problem is just that with the Harbingers, I kind of wanted to get some updated ref sheets for them to better represent how I draw them today since the "most updated" refs I have for 3/4 of them right now are from 2020-2021. As of writing this post, I retroactively decided to just axe that and focus the next character introduction(s) on the characters whose portraits will be added soon! Wow!!!
Alright, that should be it from me for now.
Tumblr media
Hold on to your hats.
We're getting more character portraits on Friday.

Kangidir and Beyond
What good is a demon without a home? Well, it does depend on who you ask as a matter of fact, but whether or not you are a legal home owner, there is still at least one place that you can call home, right?
(Brace yourselves, this is going to be a long one!)
Tumblr media
For Pain and Dave (and a large majority of the characters by extension), that home is Kangidir. A town that is a little east in its region, Molagar (More on it later).
Kangidir is a relatively new settlement compared to the other ones in its region, being the first to develop itself using the Mortal "suburbs" as a baseline, whereas other settlements before it were more like villages, or in Nekropolis's case, a whole dang city.
It was founded in the 20th eon (For reference, PnD currently takes place in the 27th eon, or in Mortal years, 202X) by a group of demons and a Mortal who was a landowner during their life. It was that Mortal who bestowed upon those demons the knowledge of "suburbia". One of those demons, Pauline Doed, would be elected by the group to be Kangidir's first leader; its mayor.
Eons after, Kangidir is still a sprawling town, growing bigger since its initial founding. To its north lay the various suburban homes. Down south, the impoverished gather en masse within Kangdir's less-developed areas. A large concentration of crime, organized or otherwise, pollutes this area but it's also where a majority of its cheaper housing options lie in the form of apartments, a familiar housing type to those hailing from Nekropolis far west. Sandwiched between these housing districts are where a lot of businesses operate.
Kangidir is also known for its massive magma lake up north and its lush green park in its south-west sector, being one of the few rare instances of genuine Mortal grass in Hell. There is also its Library, the Kangidir chapter of the Great Archive, run by no less than Bethany Harbinger. Kangidir is also host to many companies such as Yaku's Convenience, Do'Not Donuts, Pain Trade 'n Co., Traxis R&D, etc..
Tumblr media
The current leader of Kangidir is none other than Mayor Matthew Gremory, a close friend of Pauline Doed. Assisted by his secretary, Ms. Annie Maccus, Gremory does his best to keep order in his town, although he loathes Ms. Doed's decision to name him her successor in the first place when he never truly saw himself as a leader though him and Maccus are another story for another day.
Tumblr media
Molagar: Typical Hell
By extension you have the region of Molagar. Molagar is pretty much the stereotypical "Fire and Brimstone" Hell that we all know and love. However it isn't all rocks and crevices. Towards the north-east is more of what one would expect from Hell with rocky ground, occasional magma pools, and plenty of stone spires, but going south-west in Molagar reveals a more-desert-y subregion. The ground and air become dusty and more yellow, compared to the north-east's clearer maroon.
The most important aspect of Molagar is the Citadel, the great capitol of Hell, proudly standing in the center of Molagar, having been there for countless eons - maybe even since the very beginning of civilization in Hell. It is so tall and massive that it is visible to some degree in every other region in Hell.
I think that's pretty much it when it comes to Kangidir and Molagar. All in all, Kangidir is the town a lot of characters in Pain 'n Dave call home. It's just one of many settlements in Molagar if not Hell as a whole. A lot of characters' opinions of Kangidir can be summed up as "It's nice but there's a lot of room for improvement around here."
Fun Fact: Kangidir came from me misremembering "Kadingir Sanctum," a level from Doom 2016. For a good amount of time, Kangidir was known as "Kangidir Sanctum" before I just dropped it to make it sound more like a generic town name and to distance it from the Doom level. I have no clue where "Molagar" came from. I guess "molar" as in the tooth and "magma"? I dunno...
Alright! That's it for today from me! Happy 4th of July and I'll see you all later for Part 1 of our next Character Showcase!

Meet Pain and Dave!
Tumblr media
Hey, kids! It's the start of a long and informational journey and what better way to start than starting with the idiotic brats that this webcomic is named after?
That's right, it's Pain Elemental and his good ol' pal, Dave! They're both quite a basic bunch of characters, really.
Tumblr media
First up is Pain Elemental, or Pain for short (He prefers the latter). He is a Marauder Kin, an old kin of demons whose numbers are currently dwindling in the modern eons. Pain himself is anything but a marauder however. He is a lazy bum, preferring to take things easy even with his legitimate business. Pain also has a crass sense of humor though comes off more as teasing at times compared to his pal.
Tumblr media
On the other hand, you have Dave (Full name: David Patterson). Dave is a Mortal, i.e. a human who has perished and their soul now rests in Hell. For what exactly? Who knows. Dave was to be sent to the frigid Aztarkus Mortal Correctional Facility to rot in damnation however he somehow escaped before he could be sent there and soon met Pain afterwards. Dave is a rather impulsive man, acting on a whim; always jumping straight head-first without any prior thought. Although he comes off as a fickle person, Dave is known to be fiercely loyal to those he is close with.
Now the two are inseparable best buds, living their best lives. Together. Ain't that cute?
Tumblr media
Check back tomorrow for a quick introduction to the town, and by extension, world, that our duo inhabit!

The Death(?) and Return of Pain 'n Dave
Tumblr media
Hello Tumblr! I'm missingnoge, and I make webcomics about two bumbling meatheads living in Hell and several of the other horrific beings that share their plane of existence with them. It's called "Pain 'n Dave". You might've heard of it. I also do game dev too (It's going to be my job after all) but expect more posts about these two knuckleheads around here.
Tumblr media
For those of you who know me from twitter, yes, I came here after being sufficiently annoyed by the rate limits. I have no plans to let this account replace my twitter account; that account will stay up for as long as twitter can.
What this means is that I actually have different plans for this account. You see, despite being a webcomic primarily centered around two pumpkinheads, there's a surprising amount of characters and worldbuilding that inhabit their world. My goal here is to really share everything I've got about Pain, Dave, and the world they live in; something that I wasn't really able to do on twitter despite my best efforts.
Thanks to finding out that this site lets me blog like a mofo, I can now essentially turn my page here into a public fountain of knowledge about Pain 'n Dave! If worldbuilding and lore isn't really your thing though, don't worry; I still plan to post doodles and updates on the regular comics here too.
Alright, I think I'm overstaying my welcome here with this long-ass post. While I'm getting things set up around here, check out Pain 'n Dave on WEBTOON! There's a lot of fun and neat characters you can meet there. See you around!!
