Will you help me: Chapter 20 Betrayal
A/N: I'm so sorry this took forever. I lost all inspiration to write after some personal stuff happened. I didn't tag anyone because it's been so long I wasn't sure the people I used to tag were still interested. It's a little shorter than other chapters, but that's because I'm just trying to get back into the swing of things.
Esme and Y/N watch in shock as the policemen take Freddie away. Polly takes a moment to comfort Ada, but she can’t ignore her anger for long. Before the other women fully realise what’s happening she’s opening the door and is ready to storm outside. “Polly wait!” Y/N calls out. The situation is bad enough as it is, there’s no need for Polly to make it worse by attacking Tommy.
“No!” Polly exclaims when she sees Y/N stand up. “He promised Freddie could come and he broke that promise!” She adds before she walks out the door.
Y/N hopelessly looks from the door to Ada as she contemplates what to do when Esme speaks up. “Go.” Esme tells Y/N. “I’ll stay with her.”
*****
Tommy is standing at the bar drinking a glass of whiskey while Grace cleans and John and Arthur sing in the private room. “You want me to open that champagne now?” Grace asks with a smile.
Tommy doesn’t get a chance to respond as the door slams open and Polly barges in. “It’s a boy.” She says and Tommy turns to face her with a smile at the news, but then he sees the look on her face as she barges towards him. Polly is ready to hit him and he only just manages to takes her wrists in his hands before she makes contact.
John and Arthur come into the main area of the bar. “Pol? Polly.” Tommy tries to calm her down, confusion written on his face as he tries to understand why she’s so angry. Behind Polly he notices that the door opens again and Y/N steps inside. She looks like she ran all the way to the pub.
John and Arthur manage to grab hold of Polly and pull her away from Tommy as Y/N watches the scene unfold from her position by the door. “But the police came and took his father away.” Polly tells him angrily. “Don’t you dare look at me like that.” She spits out when Tommy looks at her in surprise.
He has no idea what’s going on, he doesn’t know what to say. His mouth is slightly open and he breaths heavily as he tries to think of a way to convince her of his innocence. Polly sends him another filthy look as she pulls out of John and Arthur’s hold. She spits on the ground by his feet. “You liar.” She says as she turns around to walk away, roughly bumping her shoulder into Y/N’s before she leaves.
As she walks away Tommy continues to stare at the door in astonishment as he tries to get his breathing under control. Y/N was already pretty sure that Tommy wasn’t the one who called the police, he wouldn’t do that to Ada, and the look on his face confirms it. Tommy didn’t do this, which means someone betrayed the Blinders.
Y/N’s eyes are pulled away from Tommy when she sees Grace move slowly to the back room, like she’s trying not to draw anyone’s attention, and suddenly everything falls into place. Grace was the only one outside the family who knew Freddie would come to see Ada tonight and the Garrison has a phone, a phone Grace had insisted on getting.
Y/N has to make a split second decision. She can stop and confront Grace now, or she can let her walk out of here and tell Tommy so he can deal with her later. She decides on the latter. Grace will think no one suspects her and come back in for work tomorrow. By then Y/N is sure Tommy will have come up with a plan.
By the time she comes to that decision Tommy has somewhat regained his composure and looks at Y/N. He fears that she believes he betrayed Freddie as well, because she’s not even looking at him, but then her eyes meet his and they soften slightly. “I swear I have no idea how this happened.” He tells her. Meanwhile, Arthur and John grumble as they move into the private room to get their coats before they decide to head out. They don’t really want to be in the middle of whatever conversation is about to occur.
Y/N waits for the door to close behind Arthur and John before she speaks up. “I know.” She says to Tommy as she walks closer to him. “You wouldn’t do that to Ada.” She adds as she stops in front of him and takes hold of his hand.
He lets out a breath he wasn’t aware he was holding and presses his forehead to hers. His eyes fall closed as he lets the relief wash over him. She knew he wouldn’t do something like this. Even after all this time, after everything he’s done, she still sees the good in him.
They stand like that for a few minutes as Tommy tries to come to terms with Y/N’s seemingly unshakeable belief in him even when his own family thinks of him as the villain. Meanwhile Y/N searches through her memories for all the things she has noticed about Grace that don’t add up. “I think I know who did it.” She eventually whispers.
Tommy’s eyes open and he pulls away slightly so he can look at her. A confused frown on his face as he wonders who Y/N might suspect. Y/N lets go of Tommy’s hand and steps closer to the bar where Grace left her purse. She must have forgotten it when she snuck out. “Grace?” Tommy asks as he sees Y/N pick up the barmaid’s purse.
“I think so.” Y/N says as she turns around to face him again. “She was the only one outside of the family who knew Freddie would be at the house tonight, and she’s the one who insisted on getting a phone in the pub.” She explains and the confusion slowly disappears from Tommy’s face as the pieces begin to fall into place. “It would explain why her references were fake and why she wears clothes and jewellery that are far too expensive for a barmaid.” Y/N goes on. “And why she has a gun in her purse.” She carefully pulls Grace’s gun from to purse and holds it out to Tommy.
“She’s a spy.” Tommy mutters as he takes the gun from Y/N’s hands. “I can’t believe I didn’t see it before.” He shakes his head at his own stupidity. “She came into town at the same time as Campbell, I should’ve known that was suspicious.”
“You can’t blame yourself for this, Tom.” Y/N assures him as she steps closer en places a hand on his arm. “She fooled all of us.”

John, I don’t see the same thing in your eyes that I see in Tommy’s. You should get out. You should get out.

Hi,
It’s your friendly neighbor fanfic author here. In the light of this apparent new trend of people feeding unfinished fics to AI to get an “ending,” and some people even talking about “blanket permissions,” let me just say this:
I EXPLICITLY FORBID ANYONE TO FEED MY FICS TO AI. DUDE, THAT IS ABOUT THE LEAST RESPECTFUL THING YOU CAN DO. IF YOU DO IT, SHALL YOU BE EXCOMMUNICATED FROM YOUR FANDOM AND WALK ON LEGOS BAREFOOT TILL THE END OF DAYS.
That is my anti-permission.
Thank you for your attention.

Will you help me
Chapter 19: A big day
Tommy takes Y/N’s hand and pulls her up the stairs behind him. They make their way down the hall to his room, when Tommy suddenly stops. Y/N frowns and moves a little closer, but Tommy pulls his hand away from hers and gestures for her to stay where she is. She then hears something in Tommy’s room and now understands why he suddenly stopped, so she stays still and watches as he pulls his gun out and makes his way to the door.
He pulls it open in one swift motion and points the gun at what he assumes is an intruder, but turns out to be his younger brother. “What the hell, John.” Tommy says as he puts his gun away. He takes a moment to calm himself down and is about to speak up again when he feels Y/N’s hand slip back into his as she joins him in the doorway.
“I couldn’t get it lit.” John says as he fiddles with Tommy’s opium pipe. “Couldn’t even do that.” He adds and Y/N watches him with sad eyes. She knows Tommy told him about Lizzie accepting the money he offered her and she knows John must be hurting.
Tommy steps further into the room, Y/N follows him and he’s a little ashamed that she now knows he uses opium. “What do you want to be smoking that for?” He asks John.
“Same reason as you.” John says as he moves towards Tommy’s bed and sits down. “Pain in the head.” He adds. “I spoke to Lizzie.” He explains that Lizzie tried to tell him Tommy lied but that he checked with her sister and her cousin and he now knows she still sees a few regulars. “You must think I’m an idiot.” He sounds slightly angry.
Tommy lets go of Y/N’s hand and sits down next to John. “I think you’re the first Shelby in history with a legal licence for anything.” Tommy says and John scoffs as he turns his face the other way. “What would our granddad say, eh?” Tommy goes on and John faces him again. “He’d be turning in his grave. ‘Honest bloody money? In this house? Here?’” Tommy puts on a voice. Y/N remains silent as she watches the two men.
John snorts. “You always used to do voices when we were kids.”
Tommy gets serious again. “Well we’re not kids now John.”
John looks at him. “But we still have to look out for each other, right?”
Tommy nods slightly before turning his head to look at John again. “Yeah.” He tells him as he places a hand on John’s head for a moment. “Come on. Go home. Get some sleep.” Tommy says as he stands up. “We’ve got a big day tomorrow.”
John stands up with a confused look on his face. Y/N’s eyebrows furrow in confusion as well as she looks at Tommy. “We have?” He asks as he fiddles with his cap in his hands.
“Tomorrow we finish the war with the Lees once and for all.” Tommy tells him as he puts his hands in his pockets.
“Since when?” John asks. Meanwhile, Y/N tries to catch Tommy’s eye but he avoids looking at her.
“Since just now.” They look at each other for a moment. “Ten o’clock tomorrow.” Tommy adds as he places a hand on John’s shoulder to lead him to the door while John’s puts his cap on. “Be ready for anything.” He says as he watches John walk away for a moment before closing the door.
Y/N waits for Tommy to turn to her before she speaks up. “Do I want to know what’s happening tomorrow?” She asks, her arms crossed over her chest as she waits for Tommy to let her in on his plan.
“It’s nothing bad.” He tells her as he slips his hand into his jacket pocket to pull out a cigarette. “John will be getting married to a girl from the Lee family.” He sees Y/N’s eyes widen at his words and quickly goes on. “He needs a wife and his kids need a mother, he said so himself. This girl needs a husband and I need an alliance with the Lee’s.” He explains before he runs the cigarette across his lip and lights it.
Y/N remains silent for a moment as she lets Tommy’s plan sink in. John and his kids do need someone and options in Small Heath are limited, but is this really the way? “Are you sure it’s a good idea to marry him off to someone he’s never met before?” She asks Tommy as she reaches out to take the cigarette from his lips and places it between her own.
Tommy’s eyes linger on Y/N’s lips as they wrap around the cigarette. “To be completely honest, I don’t know.” He admits with a sigh as he moves to his bed and sits down. “But it’s the only plan I could come up with, that will solve multiple problems at once.” Y/N holds the cigarette out to him and he takes it from her. He looks up at her as he inhales and sees the somewhat tense look on her face. “What is it?” He asks as he holds out a hand to her.
Y/N sighs and takes hold of his outstretched hand. “It might be nothing.” She says as she lets him pull her closer. “But it could be another problem.” She adds as she sits down next to him and cradles his hand between both of hers in her lap. Tommy gives her hand a soft squeeze to urge her to keep talking. “Grace is asking a lot of questions. Questions about things that definitely don’t concern her, not even now that you’ve hired her.”
Tommy frowns as he lets the smoke drift from his mouth. “Questions about what exactly?” He asks as his thumb brushes over the back of Y/N’s hand.
“About stolen goods and your warehouses. She asks about locations and about the workings of the illegal parts of the business.” Y/N tells him. She had kept it to herself for a while, thinking Grace might just be curious because she had just started working for them and that the questions would die down soon enough. But the questions keep coming and they get more and more detailed. “Arthus tries to brush her off, but he’s not smart or sober enough to realise when she’s playing him. She tries to make it seem like she’s doing him a favour and he tells her everything she wants to know.”
Tommy nods slowly and lets the smoke drift out of his mouth as he takes in Y/N’s words. “Thank you for letting me know.” He mutters as he lets go of her hand to wrap it around her shoulders and pull her into his side. He feels her nod against his shoulder as she relaxes into him. He still can’t quite believe that they’re back together, he fears that he’ll wake up any second now and find himself alone in his bed. “It’s late, do you want to spend the night here?” He asks softly as he trails his fingers up and down her arm.
Y/N smiles and nods again. “I’d like that.” She all but whispers before she sits up to put out the cigarette that has been dangling between her fingers. They’re still getting used to being together again. It’s different from before, they’re different than before, and she can tell that Tommy still finds it difficult to open up to her but she appreciates that he’s trying.
*****
Queen Mary looks John up and down and a tense silence forms between the two groups. “He’ll do.” She smiles and the men around John cheer while Tommy smiles as he watches on with his hands in his pockets.
“Here she is.” Tommy nods as Queen Mary leads the bride forward so the ceremony can start.
“She better be under fifty.” John mutters.
“Come here.” Tommy says and he taps John’s cheek to get him to look at him. He pulls the toothpick from John’s mouth. “Go on.” He adds and watches John with a slight smile.
As the ceremony starts Polly and Y/N arrive with Ada. They stop next to Tommy and Polly leaves Ada and Y/N with him. Y/N slips away from Ada and moves to Tommy’s other side hoping it will give the two a chance to talk. “You look well.” Tommy tells Ada a slight smile still lingering on his face as he offers Y/N his arm.
They watch the ceremony and see John smile as the girl from the Lee family lifts the veil from her face. He turns around slightly to smirk at his brothers, who exchange an amused look. Y/N shakes her head with a smile as she leans into Tommy’s side.
“You got my invitation?” Tommy asks Ada as the ceremony continued. He hopes to burry the hatchet today.
“Grace said there’s a truce.” Ada says. She doesn’t want to forgive him, but he seems different. More like the Tommy from before and she’s pretty sure Y/N had a hand in that.
Tommy nods in response. “Family day.” He says and Ada smiles slightly as she turns her head to look at him. Her smile widens a little when she sees her brother’s arm linked with Y/N’s. “Your husband couldn’t make it?” Tommy asks.
“He’s not speaking to me.” Ada says and Tommy nods slightly. “And when he does he calls me a fucking Shelby, even though I’m a Thorne now.”
“A thorn in my side, that’s for sure.” Tommy mutters as he continues to watch John and his soon to be wife Esme. Y/N squeezes his arm slightly in warning but when he glances at her she’s smiling.
*****
The party goes on as it gets dark and everyone is dancing and drinking. Tommy and Y/N sit at a table smoking a cigarette as they watch the others have fun. Tommy’s cap is gone by now, he looks relaxed, and if she’s completely honest Y/N has to suppress the urge to climb into his lap. Their peaceful moment is broken when Polly approaches. “You should tell Ada to slow down.”
Ada has been on her feet all night. Dancing and running around with the Lee’s. Y/N had tried to get her to sit down, but the Shelby sister had ignored her advice. Tommy scoffs. “Think she’d listen to me?”
“Tried stopping her but she’s been drinking.” Polly tells him. “Been stuck in that little basement for weeks what do we expect. She’s going of like a firecracker.” Polly’s eyes widen slightly as Ada spins around. “Oh Christ, Tommy, please.”
Tommy reluctantly gets up and squeezes Y/N’s shoulder before he makes his way to Ada and Arthur. Arthur is trying to get her to calm down as well. “Ada, come on, have a rest. Sit down.” He says as he approaches her.
“Come and look Esme.” Ada says as she steps back to Tommy can’t reach her. “Come and look at the family you’ve joined.” She continues to spew out her grief with Tommy and the family as everyone tries to calm her down. Tommy sends Y/N a pleading look and she stands up to make her way to Ada.
As Y/N and Polly try to calm her down, they see that Ada’s water just broke. Tommy’s eyes widen as he realises what’s happening. “Bloody hell, Ada. You do pick your times.” Arthur says once he catches on. Tommy takes off his coat and wraps it around Ada’s shoulder as Polly leads her away.

Safe again (part 4)
Y/N was already suspicious when Tommy told her John needed help and it’s confirmed when John stands across from her in the kitchen after they’ve put the kids to bed. It’ll be another half hour before Tommy will stop by to walk her home and there’s nothing else in John’s house that needs to be taken care of. John’s house actually looks neater then it has in years. It’s clear that John is about to start asking her about what happened, so Y/N decides to beat him to it. “Tommy told you about Groves, didn’t he?” She asks as she takes the kettle off the stove now that the water is boiling.
John is taken aback by his sister’s words and for a moment he just watches her prepare tea for the two of them. “He did.” He finally says as Y/N places a cup in front of him before she sits down with her own cup. “You used to tell Tommy everything and it scares him that you don’t anymore. You know we’re still here for you, right?” He asks as he sits down as well. “That hasn’t changed.”
The look on Y/N’s face softens at her brother’s words. “Of course I know that, John.” She assures him. “But you’ve been through more than enough in France. There’s no need for me to add to that.” She tells him. “Especially because there’s nothing you can do about it. It happened and I need to figure out how to live with it.”
John understands why Tommy is so worried now. The look in his sister’s eyes breaks his heart, there’s an emptiness there that he has only seen in the eyes of the men coming back from France. “If you won’t tell him what happened he’ll start to fill in the gaps himself and come up with something way worse than what actually happened.” John tells her and then he takes a deep breath before he continues. “But I also think he’s afraid that you don’t trust him anymore.” He says and Y/N frowns in confusion as she looks at him. “He knows he’s not the same anymore and I think he’s afraid that you might look at him differently than you used to.”
Y/N thinks about that for a moment. “Maybe I do.” She mutters as she looks down at her tea, her hands wrapped around the cup. “It’s not that I don’t trust him anymore, but I guess part of me always saw Tommy as invincible.” She tries to explain her thoughts as she looks back up at John. It’s a little strange to talk to him about this, she never really had conversations this deep with him, but it’s nice to confide in someone like this. “When dad left Tommy stepped in, when Arthur acted irresponsible Tommy took over. I knew that no matter what Tommy would always be there, but then you all went to war and he wasn’t there anymore.”
Y/N goes on not knowing that Tommy just stepped into the kitchen. John does notice and is about to speak up but Tommy motions for him to stay quiet. “Polly was still there of course and Ada, but it wasn’t the same. Tommy and I-“ She trails off, not sure how to explain it.
“You have a special bond.” John finishes for her and she nods but immediately opens her mouth. John knows what she’s going to say, he can see the hint of guilt in her eyes. “It’s alright, Y/N. You don’t have to feel bad. Just because you and Tommy share a bond that’s different than the one you share with rest of us, doesn’t mean you don’t love us.” John assures her and when he looks past her he can see a hint of emotion in Tommy’s eyes.
Y/N sends him a grateful look. “I know that he’s here again and that he wants to help, but now that I see how France broke him, I know that even he’s not invincible.” She looks down at her tea again. “I’m afraid that it will break him even more if he knows what happened.” She locks eyes with John and then adds. “And I don’t want him to look at me differently either.”
“Nothing could change the way I look at you.” Tommy speaks up, his voice heavy with emotion. Y/N’s head turns in his direction as her eyes widen in surprise. Tommy steps closer and crouches down next to her chair. “You have to tell me what happened, Y/N.” He says softly as he reaches out and takes one of her hands.
She can tell he won’t let this go. He will continue to dig, push and prod until she tells him, so she decides to save both of them the trouble. “I killed someone.”
