Patalliro Movie Viewing 8/28

On August 28 I and 2 friends went to a viewing of the 2019 Patalliro movie in a small theatre in Yokohama that only sat 20-something people. The most exciting part about the event was that Maya sensei was going to be there to do a talk session, signing, and photos. I’ve never once thought I would have the opportunity to meet such a legend so this was honestly such a crazy experience.

We got to the theatre so early and quickly took some photos before finding a place to eat (which there weren’t many options for since it was in a kind of residential area lol), and after that we quickly headed back to the theatre and went in. We were definitely the youngest people there (I especially) and the other fans were sooo friendly. It was such a casual event that before it started and the staff were telling us the general rules that the staff yelled back into the other room to check with the other staff on some things. First we watched the movie, which was of course amazing, especially seeing it on a big screen for the second time since I saw it in a theatre in 2019. Then after the movie Maya sensei and his assistant came out to talk for a while. I can’t disclose what he spoke about but it was super interesting to hear about the series from the man who created it himself. After that the staff went in order taking items from everyone for him to sign, and I got a postcard of Maraich signed (I still can’t believe he wrote my name lol). Then he signed a giant poster for the movie that had been up on the door (see below) and everyone took turns taking photos with him and holding the poster if they desired.

After the event ended and he left many of the other fans there came over to my friend and I and asked to take photos of our ita bags. I was so surprised and they were all so sweet, I was really happy that they liked our bags too. Someone else even waited at the door to give us some Japanese snacks. The three of us ended up being the last people to leave the theatre because we started talking to his assistant, and this is when the craziest thing happened.

As we were walking out the door the staff stopped us and asked if we wanted the previously mentioned huge signed movie poster??? I literally started crying as I stood outside holding it, it just felt so surreal. I feel so lucky to have experienced this and to meet someone I look up to so much.
