The New Powell Estate? The Doctor had to bite her tongue to stop herself from laughing. She, too, highly doubted if they’d bothered rebuilding that particular estate — but it was typical Rose to try. That’s my girl. Good thing she’d play along, act like she had no idea that such a thing didn’t exist. Given that she was going to be entirely evasive, not tell her who she was, well…she couldn’t really say a thing.
“Can’t say that I do,” they admitted, reaching for the drink. She’d been here before, plenty of different regenerations. These futuristic bars were somewhere she should bring more companions, actually, they’d be fascinated…but it had been a little while since she’d travelled with anyone. That was something she should probably change — but not yet. “Not quite, no. I travel quite a bit, can’t say that I ever stay in one place for too long.”
Tumblr media
“And me,“ Rose said with a toothy, brilliant grin. “I stop back home sometimes, though... with m'laundry.” With a glance around to make sure her rabid boss wasn’t anywhere nearby, Rose slipped into the booth across from the woman. If nothing else, her feet were absolutely murdering her in these heels.
Elbows on the table, she leaned in. One of the best things about traveling with the Doctor was the people she met. She’d chatted with people from different species, exchanged dating stories with girls from centuries back, and fallen in love with an ancient and ridiculous man with his own toothy grin.  “What’s your favorite place you’ve been then?“

This all felt like so many lifetimes ago, it must have been hundreds of years. For Rose, though? She’d likely seen her mere hours ago, with an entirely different face — all leather jackets and Northern accents, or trenchcoats and converse…either way, the Doctor knew she must still have been travelling with them. How else would she be there? There was no memory of it, though why would there be, if she’d simply been dropped off there? Maybe that was where she came in, the stranger who helped out.
“Oh, err…yes, of course. Star Rise it is.” That wasn’t what she wanted to say. She’d missed her, but how could she utter those words? Rose couldn’t know who she was, how complicated would that make things? There’d be too many questions, about where she’d ended up…it was safer to remain anonymous, it wouldn’t be all that hard to make John Smith sound a little more feminine. “Where are you from?”
Tumblr media
“Earth - New Earth,” Rose quickly corrected herself. If it was anyone else in this place, Rose would have been preparing herself for a pick-up line, but this woman didn’t seem the type. She seemed sincere... and there was something about those eyes. “New Powell Estate. Y’probably don’t know it.” Particularly as she highly doubted that when the human race had gone about building cities named after their homes on Earth, anyone had ever felt the need to honor an otherwise insignificant corner of London.
She hit the buttons for a Star Rise on the pad and a few seconds later, the drink came floating over on a hover-tray. Rose passed it down to the woman. “What ‘bout you?” Rose asked, leaning against the backrest of a nearby chair. “You local?”

Not a single star in the sky…how was that possible? How could that work? Stars didn’t just switch off like a light, they didn’t just disappear out of existence. Sarah was no scientist, but she was pretty certain that was impossible. Then again, a lot of things she witnessed felt like they should be impossible, the Intersect for one. There were very few reasons to trust this strange woman who’d broken into a CIA base, and knew all about Chuck — but she’d certainly piqued Sarah’s interest.
The gun was lowered, though she hadn’t totally written off the idea of shooting her. Why would she, when she still had no clue who she was, or how she’d gotten there? She knew fine well she should probably just shoot now, ask questions later…but she wouldn’t exactly get answers that way. “What does that even mean? What do the stars in the sky have to do with anything?”
Tumblr media
She registered the gun lowering, but didn’t pay it any mind. There’d been a lot of instances, traveling with the Doctor, when dying had all too imminent but now it seemed inconsequential when everything she had to love could flicker out of resistance like dust. “Everything, ‘cos we have one too ‘case you’ve forgotten,“ Rose said, “And so do a billion other races on a billion other worlds. Their stars going out, like they never existed. And if there’s any hope for them, for us, then we need the Doctor. That’s who he is. D’you get now why I don’t care much ‘bout your database? I don’t even know if this is the right universe - but, if I’m lucky, he’ll be able to save all of ‘em.“
Rose started up the stairs, still talking. “Need to make sure I’m in the right place. The Cybermen - do you remember the Cybermen? Ghosts everywhere. Or the ship that crashed into Big Ben, would’ve been a few years back, remember that?”

This really wasn’t supposed to happen. There was no such thing as impossible, but this? Rose was supposed to be safe in an entirely different universe, and perhaps she still was, perhaps this was when time became entirely too wibbly wobbly for comfort, but seeing her again knocked the breath from the Doctor’s lungs. It had been centuries; six faces had come and gone since their tenth, yet there was a lump in her throat, a funny feeling in the pit of their stomach, both hearts racing beyond belief.
It was easy to distract herself when she had a companion, to show someone else the universe, put the memories of all those long gone into a locked box in the back of their mind — never forgotten, but not allowing those memories to haunt her. Alone, however, and everything was different. Alone, and she was approaching without even considering what she was going to say. “Rose…” Well…it was something.
Tumblr media
“Just stay here,“ the Doctor she knew had told her in his thick Northern accent, “Keep an eye on the... puppy,” wolf-man, utter dog, owner of the New Moon club, “and Jack and I will check in with you in a few days. And don’t get yourself noticed... or killed.“ Alright, she’d done that. She’d taken on the role of the pretty blonde waitress in this New Vegas club. She’d been promised all of time and space and here she was - waiting tables and getting her bum pinched.
Rose glanced around as one of the customers - a woman who looked like she’d walked right out of a Renaissance fair. No, not Renaissance. Come on, Rose, you’ve been there. Regency. What happens in New Vegas...
“Sorry, didn’t see you come in,“ she said, spinning her order pad around and bringing up the menu. She thought nothing of the woman knowing her name - she was millions of miles and years from home but she did, after all, have a nametag on. “What can I get you? I recommend the Star Rise. Bit like Sex on a Beach.”

Worked for everyone? Yeah, right. Nobody was on everybody’s side, nobody was completely neutral. Regardless of what people said, there was always some ulterior motive, always something under the surface. Sarah had absolutely no reason to trust this woman, and why would she even try? She wasn’t supposed to be in there, and she’d been looking through her files, looking at Ellie, and she knew about the Intersect. Alarm bells were ringing, even if she tried to distract with mention of some Doctor.
“No. You’re not borrowing my phone, and you’re not distracting me with all this…crap about some ‘Doctor’. How do you know about the Intersect? How are you in here? Do you work for the Ring?” Had they infiltrated, made it down into Castle, and come up with some bizarre story to distract her, while someone else took Chuck? It wouldn’t be the craziest thing that had ever happened, that was for sure. “I want the truth.”
Tumblr media
Okay, perhaps bringing up their precious Intersect wasn’t her best move. “It’s in your files - there was a big hole in every file abou’ someone who was doin’ these... impossible things. Who knew things he shouldn’t. I thought it was the Doctor, so I dug a bit deeper. Only it wasn’t him.” Of course it wasn’t... She was losing hope it ever would be. “I’m not after your boyfriend, mate, alrigh’?”
She glanced down at her watch, and the timer ticking away on it. If this was the right reality, she was running out of time. She stepped past Sarah and towards the stairs, “You can shoot me if you like, but when you look up at the sky and there’s not a single star in it, you’ll only have yourself to blame.”

❝ don’t be ridiculous. it’s pouring rain, we’re practically closed - i’m not charging you for getting dry and staying warm. ❞   elsie closes the woman’s hand and pushes it back towards herself with a smile and a shake of the head. it’s not as if they’d have made anything today anyways, and she’s hungry too. it’s little effort to make an extra portion of food. besides, the stranger is clearly a traveler, and travelers have elsie’s favorite thing: stories.
she heads back to the kitchen and she’s gone for a longer while. when she returns with a plate and a mug, she sets them on a table that she then drags a bit closer to the fire. her own meal and drink occupies the further end of the table and she brings up a chair to sit on, crossing one leg over the other.
❝ we could swap stories, if you like. good comfort on a rainy day. ❞
Tumblr media
Rose wrapped cold hands around the warmth of the mug. Whatever was within was unfamiliar to her - it didn’t quite smell like the tea you could buy at a corner shop and she was pretty sure hot cocoa wasn’t a thing in this part of the world. Not quite yet. Wherever this part of the world was - the Doctor hadn’t had the chance to give his typical rundown of the local trivia before they’d been separated.
“That I can do,“ Rose said with a grin, “only m’not sure if you’ll believe me. Which do you want - ridiculous, terrifying, or a little bit unlikely... although, come to think of it, most of my stories have all of the above.”

Marisa tried denying to herself that Tyler made sense. Logically, she knew all of it to be true, but she had to keep telling herself what she had been telling herself. Remain strong in her conviction that she was doing the right thing, because if she didn’t, she wouldn’t be able to live with herself.
“Falling in love for me has only ever brought pain and suffering.” Marisa told her. “And you know, many of the nurses here have had the operation. They seem happy, don’t they?” They seemed empty, and Marisa knew that. With their blank eyes, emotionless smiles, incurious about everything. They weren’t suffering, but they definitely weren’t happy either. “Besides… stopping me would be a bad idea. if I’m no longer at the helm, the Magisterium will just continue using this technology in my absence.” she informed her.
Tumblr media
“There was a point where I considered leaving the Magisterium all together, because… well, because I didn’t want to do this anymore. I didn’t want to just rip children from their homes. I tried suggesting that we continue with volunteer adult trials, and they told me that regardless of whatever decision I made, the Magisterium would be moving forward with the adolescent trials. The project would continue with or without me. However, they wouldn’t show restraint as I do. While under my orders, the General Oblation Board processes anywhere from two to three operations a week. What my superiors wanted me to do last was process ten a day. Ten children, every day. I had to fight tooth and nail to avoid that being the decision. Before that, when we first started taking them, they wanted the children to immediately be processed, measured, and going through the operation the same day of their arrival. I convinced them that it takes more time than that. It doesn’t, and they would find that out if someone else were to take leadership. You may think I’m the worst person, but believe me, they are far worse.”
Tumblr media
“The better of two evils, that’s what you’re sayin’?“ Rose said, revulsion punching at her stomach although she tried to keep it from reaching her face. She didn’t need to provoke her. Don’t provoke her... “You know what that leaves you as though?” Alright, a little provocation couldn’t hurt.
Two to three operations a week. Two to three children losing their hearts and souls every week, becoming as blank as the nurses. She was almost certain that you could ask those women if they’d mind you chopping off their hands and they’d just stare at you and shrug. Whatever had made them alive had been ripped away.
“Righ’ then, General Oblation Board. Thanks for pointin’ me towards who we have to stop after you.” She stuck a hand in her pocket, finding her phone and pressing out a message against the keys. It came out as “Genebal Oblatin Bord” but she was rather sure the Doctor would work it out. “Y’know, when you have an evil plan, it’s really a bit thick t’just blurt it out like that.”
