For the second week in a row, I will be up in Portland for an event! This weekend, I will have a table at Maine Comic and Toy Con at the Cross Insurance Arena! This will be my first time tabling at this convention. I’ve heard nothing but positive things about its older sister convention, Bangor Toy and Comic Con, so I’m looking forward to this. For the past week, I’ve felt almost back to my normal self. I’m ready!

On Sunday ONLY, from 9:30 AM-11:30 AM, I will be hosting a live demo of Outcasts of the Rift in the game room at Furcationland! I may be able to keep my game set up for longer like I did last year, but I can’t guarantee that.
I won’t be hosting a raffle at Furcationland, but I may display my folder of concept art if I have the space.

Made in the style of the “make a video game cover/movie poster using Comic Sans and clip art” challenge, this is the new promotional art for Outcasts of the Rift! I like it so much that I’ll be replacing all the ugly old promotional art with this masterpiece. All the in-game assets will be replaced with clip art, too! Click here to see the boring original.

Like with last year, I’m scaling back the number of conventions and gaming events that I’ll be tabling at. My first event of 2024 is CT Gamer Con at Mohegan Sun! Are you going to attend any of these events?

I’ve noticed as I grow older that I have less and less time to draw commemorative illustrations. Still, I wanted to make a point to draw something for my 30th birthday. Even if I’ve been far too busy to digitally color it, I’m still pleased with the pencil version.
It's hard to believe that a decade ago, I drew this.
It makes for an interesting visual representation of how things change and don't change in the course of a decade, in far more ways than I can explain here. In the last decade I've had some significant life changes, like graduating college with two degrees (Creative Writing and Graphic Design,) working in the graphics industry, getting married and moving in with my husband. I feel like I've mellowed somewhat in personality, or at least I'm less impulsive, not as sensitive or quick to anger. Some of my interests, goals and priorities are different as well.

This Saturday, I will be demoing in the gaming room at Kids Con in South Portland, ME! This is my last convention of the year.
It has been a busy past few weeks for me, so I’m relieved I don’t have to travel far or prepare much.

This weekend, I will be driving out to Syracuse, New York for Retro Game Con! It’s Columbus Day weekend, so I expect it to be a beautiful drive through the mountains…but there will probably also be substantial traffic.
Retro Game Con will most likely be the last time this year where I host the raffle, so don’t miss out on a chance at a free autographed print! In November, I will be demoing at Kids Con as well, but my space in the gaming room may or may not allow for me to have anything other than the two computers and peripherals.

I had a busy and exciting weekend at Retro World Expo in Hartford! This was my first time tabling at Retro World Expo. My table was two tables away from another game developer who I met at Connecticut Gamer Con earlier this year. There I had inspired him to promote his games at conventions. The convention community is surprisingly small and interconnected.
While there, I ate at a somewhat upscale Caribbean-inspired restaurant called The Russell and also at a breakfast/lunch restaurant called The Place 2 Be. I’ve been to the Springfield location, and the Hartford The Place 2 Be has a very different aesthetic.
Like at Too Many Games Expo, I hosted a free raffle at my table. I will announce the winners of the raffle in the near future!

After a midsummer hiatus, I’m back to demoing!
This weekend, I will be exhibiting Outcasts of the Rift at Retro World Expo in Hartford, CT. Since Too Many Games Expo, I have added significant updates to the demo, including refined animations and assets, new game mechanics and more.
Find me at Table 509 to play, chat about the game and enter a free raffle. Yes, ANOTHER free raffle! The prize remains the same: an autographed Outcasts of the Rift poster of your choice, and the empire that wins (has the most raffle tickets in its jar) will have a character from that empire drawn in a sketch that I’ll share on social media.

Presenting the correct choice from this video! The second part of the puzzle (which you’ll be able to play in the upcoming demo) was very fun to program.
I have the outcomes of the other two choices posted on Instagram.
Create a key to open the door with.
Create fire to burn down the door with.

Look at all the raffle tickets in these jars from Too Many Games Expo! I counted the number of tickets in each jar, and Roncefleur wins by a VERY small margin of two tickets!
In the relatively near future, I will post a sketch of a character from Roncefleur that you, my followers, get to choose! The next character reveal will also feature a Roncefleurais character. Next I combined the tickets from both jars and pulled two winners. The winners are NUMBER 32 and NUMBER 16! If you are one of these two lucky souls, please reach out to me to claim your autographed prints. Since my next convention isn’t until late August, I’ll be lenient and give you TWO months to do so!

Two weeks ago, Outcasts of the Rift was featured at Too Many Games Expo! This is the farthest I have ever traveled to table at a convention. Not counting stops, it took my husband and I seven hours of driving on Thursday. We took time on Monday to explore the palatial King of Prussia Mall, then drove home. It took us nearly 12 hours to drive home because we were caught in severe thunderstorms, fog and construction most of the trip. Nonetheless, coming to Too Many Games was definitely worth it!
I intended to post photos and videos each day to document my time at the convention, but I was so busy I barely had time to take notes or look around! However, I played several exciting demos and connected with several other game developers.

My table at Contropolis in Marlborough, MA! I had the most convenient loading/unloading experience I’ve ever had at a convention. My table was about 50 feet from where I parked.
There were fewer attendees than I expected. I’m glad I only attended Saturday and Sunday, because I heard Friday was horribly slow from almost everyone I talked to. Even Saturday and Sunday were two of the slowest days I’ve had in a long time. I hope that more people will attend next year, although I doubt I will table at Contropolis again. The table was far too expensive for the size of the convention. I spent $250 for an 8’ table, whereas most conventions this size would charge $75-$120 for a table. There were maybe 2,000 attendees total across three days, and that’s a generous estimate.
Since last time, I’ve adjusted my demo setup a little bit. I added even more bells and whistles to it for Too Many Games Expo. I will post those photos in the next few days!

One substantial issue I have run into throughout creating Outcasts of the Rift is scale. How do I make assets look consistent to each other in size and proportion? This is especially a problem with the character portraits. Now that I am creating more and more character portraits, I've begun to run into this problem. Here are a few solutions I devised. Which solution do you think looks the best?
Showing characters as their actual size, even though some will look really small (although you should keep in mind the game's native resolution is 1080x720.)
Showing characters at a more aesthetically pleasing size, even if their sizes proportionate to each other are incorrect.
Showing large characters in the foreground, which limits their full-body animations and could block other characters' portraits.

Big reveal time!
Odette is a schwanenjungfrau, a species of shapeshifter native to Roncefleur. While they are unattractive when not transformed, their dazzling transformed forms are as powerful as they are beautiful. Do not insult their untransformed appearances, or they will compulsively transform, consumed by violent rage!
Roncefleur and Kikuseki are populated by several species of shapeshifters. You’ll find out more about the vital role they have in gameplay and in the story in the future!
