i hate when people say “zutara is just girls who self insert as katara & want zuko”

first of all, arguably not always true as someone who never saw herself as katara & is still obsessed w zutara, secondly let’s not act like ur angsty ass wasn’t trying to relate to mai bsfr or the kat@@ng shippers who r self inserting as aang.

theres literally no issue with self inserting or relating to a character so i don’t see the issue? that doesn’t mean the ship is entirely invalid even if we relate to someone in the ship. but even then there’s xreaders for a reason babes, if we really wanted zuko for ourselves those type of fics exist.

Something that I think ppl who ship both sukka and zutara don't acknowledge enough is the fact that poor Hakoda met both his kids' future spouses on the same day, in the same place and that place just happened to be prison.

Hey! So, I just need some help understanding something... I heard that people think that Zuko took Katara straight to Ember Island after TSR. I missed it on my rewatch, and I don't get where this interpretation comes from, and whether it is just a headcanon. Do you happen, by chance, to know more about that? I LOVE this tidbit by the way; I just don't know where it's coming from. Sorry if this is random.

Oh I’ve heard that before! From what I’ve seen, it’s based primarily on the visuals we see of the settings. Before leaving to find Yon Rha, everyone is camped out on this island:

It appears to be a small, uninhabited island (which makes sense if they’re in hiding) so clearly not Ember Island.

Then at the end, the final scene begins with Katara here:

This is definitely Zuko’s family home on Ember Island, with Katara sitting alone on the pier. In the second screenshot you can see Appa flying in.

Now here is the interesting part:

Zuko and Aang get off of Appa, and if you squint, it kind of looks like the others are in the saddle too. Based on the conversation that follows, it’s clear that this is the first time Aang has seen Katara since she left to confront Yon Rha.

So the implication here is that Zuko and Katara first went to Ember Island alone, then Zuko flew with Appa by himself to pick up everyone else from the other island. This actually makes a lot of sense logistically, because without Appa, everyone else had no way of getting to Ember Island from wherever they were before.

I really like this theory (and I think based on the evidence it’s pretty much canon) because it shows there are a lot of missing scenes between Zuko and Katara. It makes sense. He was the only one there to comfort her after something so traumatic. I love the idea that he thought to bring her to a place that was special to him, hoping to find her comfort. Then I’m guessing she wanted some alone time and he left her to go get the others.

I think it’s very sweet, to think about that time they spent together and what they talked about ❤️

ZKBB 2024 Basic Guidelines

What is a Big Bang?

A Big Bang is a collaborative event where writers are paired with artists and beta readers to write and edit a long fic with accompanying fanart within a specific period of time. In a traditional Big Bang, writers come up with their own story idea, and artists and betas bid for places on writers’ teams based on the story ideas submitted.

What are the story requirements for this Big Bang?

All stories should be centered around Zuko and Katara and their relationship.

Oneshots should meet a minimum word count of 6,000 words when completed, and multichapters should meet a minimum word count of 10,000 words before the end of the event.

Stories must be rated G or T on AO3

Big Bang fics must be new, standalone works. No continuations of existing series or published WIPs are allowed.

Story ideas should be secret before the start of the event to allow for fair, anonymous project bidding.

What are the roles and expectations for this Big Bang?

Writers will be expected to come up with their own story ideas, meet word count checkpoints throughout the event, share their progress with their team, and communicate with their team and the mods as needed.

Artists will be expected to create at least one finished piece of art for their project(s). Any type of art is welcome. Artists will be asked to meet several checkpoints throughout the event, and should share their progress with their teams as the event continues.

Betas will be expected to work closely with the writer and provide advice and feedback as the story is written. All beta readers should be able to provide SPaG feedback, and may be asked to provide additional support with plot and other creative decisions.

Other information

All participants are required to be active in our event Discord server. Work space within the event server will be provided for every team, and separate servers for individual projects are not allowed.

Members who are inactive for three consecutive weeks may be dropped from their project(s) or the event as a whole.

Members who miss formal check-ins (see our event schedule for dates) or fall behind on their progress will be dealt with on a case-by-case basis.

Members are welcome to announce their participation in the Big Bang, but should not discuss specifics about their project(s) publicly until after posting begins (or for writers, after the reveal date).

Use of any AI text or image generators is not welcome in the Big Bang.

why do kat@@ng shippers feel the need to go into zutara spaces to bash them?

maybe it’s just me but i rarely ever see zutara shippers on kat@@ng posts bashing them unless it also has to do w zutara. but for some reason they are EVERYWHERE on zutara fics, posts, twt, tiktok. i can’t scroll on a zutara edit for more than 3 seconds before someone’s bashing on zutara shippers.

why are they so insecure abt their ship? i don’t understand? they are like jealous girlfriends calling out everyone under the sun instead of looking at a mirror?? i get you don’t enjoy it & that’s fine but calling us delusional (which is such a stupid take when there’s so much content to back up zutara and or to analyze the ship as a whole) or toxic, idiots, bashing on our charachter etc like pls im just tryna enjoy a zutara post why am i getting called a colonizer

this ! where i am from, our native tongue was almost completely wiped out due to colonization. the effects are devastating, and our culture is barley breathing.

it is SO disrespectful to say that zutara shippers are supporting colonization when so many zutara shippers are POC and have dealt with the traumatizing effects. things that we still deal with to this day, and quite frankly many just use it as an excuse for their cannon ships to seem superior. why do they have no issue shipping zukka if this is the case? why don’t they also criticize the writers and their dehumanization of VICTIMS of colonization? they just like to pick and choose what makes them feel good about themselves, they don’t truly care about the effect it has on us, this is our life, we don’t get to turn the show off and not think about it again.

I hate when zutara antis say that people who like Zutara support colonialism.

As a Latin woman who lives in a country that has suffered from colonialism, it's so disrespectful to say that Zutara shippers romanticize colonialism because here we're really struggling because of it.

It’s not a thing that you can use to describe a fictional ship dynamic. If you don't know how it is dealing with it every day, you’d better keep your mouth shut.

On 𝖠𝖺𝗇𝗀 Kissing Katara in Ember Island Players

I don't hate 𝖠𝖺𝗇𝗀 for this. I'd argue that it's not indicative of misogyny or a disregard of Katara as her own person. To me, it is indicative of 𝖠𝖺𝗇𝗀 being a child. A mature one, one whose grown a lot over this year, but a child. A child that doesn't fully understand consent until he's already crossed a line.

But I also keep that maturity, relationship wise, in mind. For when the show wants to have its cake and eat it too. Or else I'd be having a completely different discussion about 𝖪𝖺𝗍𝖺𝖺𝗇𝗀.

I know the zutara fandom has basically accepted the idea that the crystal caves scene story was spread by the dai li, first to their families and close friends and then subsequently to the entirety of Ba Sing Se including the occupying FN forces, but please consider:

Dai Li agent #1: I really can't believe what happened with the fire prince and that waterbender girl

Dai Li agent #2: Yeah its insane, especially considering how they were on opposite sides of the war

Azula, listening in and realizing how embarrassing this could be for her brother: I'm sorry, what happened?

Me: I mean, no shit, it's a burn scar.

Me: But it has the three little pointy bits at the back, which kind of make it look like the Fire Nation's flame emblem, but turned sideways.

Me, scribbling furiously: The resistance movement in the Fire Nation comes to see Zuko as the symbolic leader of their movement toward the end of the war, and because voicing support for the traitor prince isn't tolerated, the resistance needs a subtler way to make their position known. All across the Fire Nation, banners are stolen and re-hung sideways, official seals on documents are deliberately printed crooked, and disillusioned soldiers deface their uniforms by tearing the flame emblems away and reattaching them sideways. What most people know but no one will say is that the sideways flames represent Zuko's scar, and that the symbol indicates support for him as a leader and for his mission to bring an end to the war.

Ugh I will always love the concept of Katara using blood bending to revive Zuko after the last agni kai, mostly because it makes no sense to me that Zuko was able to bounce back so easily after being struck by lightning, but also because the way the show treats bloodbending is just odd to me. It was a defense mechanism created by a traumatized victim of some of the most devastating parts of colonization, and although I understand that Hama was supposed to symbolize the "bad parts" of waterbending and was important for Katara's growth in realizing that the world isn't entirely black and white, its still disappointing to me that the show never explored the gray areas of blood bending, especially since that episode was, as I stated above, about understanding the gray areas of the war. Katara using blood bending to revive Zuko would add so much to the last agni kai in demonstrating that she has truly realized that "good" and "evil" are relative concepts, and Zuko being saved by both a defense mechanism of a survivor of colonialism and a type of bending used to terrorize his people would have even added to his arc, as the narrative required him to save and subsequently be saved by the physical embodiment of everything his family sought to annihilate.
