Title: Stay Awake
Author: Megan Goldin
Release Date: August 9th, 2022
Published By: St Martin’s Press
Pages: 338 pages
***
SYNOPSIS:
Liv Reese wakes up in the back of a taxi with no idea where she is or how she got there. When she’s dropped off at the door of her brownstone, a stranger answers―a stranger who now lives in her apartment and forces her out in the cold. She reaches for her phone to call for help, only to discover it’s missing, and in its place is a bloodstained knife. That’s when she sees that her hands are covered in black pen, scribbled messages like graffiti on her skin: STAY AWAKE.
Two years ago, Liv was living with her best friend, dating a new man, and thriving as a successful writer for a trendy magazine. Now, she’s lost and disoriented in a New York City that looks nothing like what she remembers. Catching a glimpse of the local news, she’s horrified to see reports of a crime scene where the victim’s blood has been used to scrawl a message across a window, the same message that’s inked on her hands. What did she do last night? And why does she remember nothing from the past two years? Liv finds herself on the run for a crime she doesn’t remember committing as she tries to piece together the fragments of her life. But there’s someone who does know exactly what she did, and they’ll do anything to make her forget―permanently.
In the vein of SJ Watson’s Before I Go to Sleep and Christopher Nolan’s cult classic Memento, Megan Goldin’s Stay Awake is an electrifying novel that plays with memory and murder.
My Rating: 4.5/5 Stars
Megan Goldin got me again with this book. Her writing is superb. The way she can drop breadcrumbs and misdirections into a story with perfect precision and timing really sells the story and leaves you wondering if maybe you’re crazy too like the characters. You can never quite trust who’s a reliable character, who’s innocent, who’s the killer, who’s a red herring, because she sets up the story in such a way that you’re guessing and making up theories the whole time. It’s not heavy-handed but its not obvious either. Theres also just enough info to keep the story moving along until you get more of the details of what happened, there’s never too much or too little info given at once — its enough to keep you on the hook and guessing while still coming up with your own theories of what happened.  The way she slowly reveals details until the final tada! are masterful. I never saw the killer coming, I guess its true what they say – its always the ones you least suspect. There were a couple things that I assumed that turned out to be true, once I was given enough information, and a couple of things that I missed.
I will say that I enjoyed The Night Swim more than Stay Awake, but Stay Awake is still a fantastic book. I love the jumping timelines aspects of her stories and how they slowly all come together into one timeline at the end, its such a fun, engaging, mind-bending way to tell a story and Megan Goldin really pulls off the format. You’re never second guessing the story or going “wait what?” as you’re reading. I will say though, that the beginning of the book threw off at first and it took me easily 50-75 pages to get into the story. However, by the time I got to the middle of the book I realized that the reason the beginning of the book is so jarring and confusing is probably to mimic the confusing and jarring nature of the main characters memory loss, which I thought was genius. Whether or not this was done intentionally I loved the idea of it once I made the connection further along into the story.
I loved discovering Liv’s memories along with her and was completely obsessed with who the killer was and if/how Liv was framed. Megan Goldin delivers the perfect amount of suspense for a psychological thriller, and I love how she handled the police side of the events. I really appreciated the back and forth between Detective Halliday and Detective Lavelle, Lavelle was ready to sign, seal, and deliver this case on a silver plater based on the evidence intentionally presented to them by the murderer and Halliday was sure that there was more to this case than what meets the eye and advocated for Liv being more than just the most convenient or plausible suspect in the murder they’re investigating.  The motives of who the actual murderer is, isn’t really spelled out at the end but I feel like Megan was telling us the motives of the killer all along, spelled out in the conversations between Levelle and Halliday over the course of the investigation on why Liv would want to murder the victim(s). The seeds are there spread out over the course of the book as to the who’s and why’s but will only make sense once you get to the end and think back on the course of events.
I will read everything Megan Goldin writes because her writing is sublime and keeps you on the edge of your seat until the very end. And you should too!

One easy way to confirm Einstein’s theory is to use the GPS system on your cell phone. The GPS system consists of thirty-one satellites orbiting the Earth. At any time, your cell phone can receive signals from three of them. Each of these three satellites is moving in a slightly different trajectory and angle. The computer in your cell phone then analyzes this data from the three satellites and triangulates your precise position. The GPS system is so accurate that it has to take tiny corrections from both special and general relativity into account. Since the satellites are moving at roughly 17,000 miles per hour, a clock in the GPS satellites beats slightly slower those than on Earth due to special relativity, which states that higher speeds result in slower time—the phenomenon demonstrated in Einstein’s thought experiment of outracing a light beam. But since gravity is weaker the farther you move into outer space, time actually speeds up a bit due to general relativity, which states that space-time can be warped by gravitational pull—the weaker the gravitational pull, the faster time moves. This means that special and general relativity work in opposite directions, with special relativity causing the signals to slow down, while general relativity causes the signals to speed up. Your cell phone then factors in both competing effects and tells you precisely where you are located. So without special and general relativity working in tandem, you would be lost.

I don’t know if these cops were unable to stop this murder, because they chose not to try.
An entire classroom was murdered while these fucking cowards tased and handcuffed the parents of those children who were begging these fucking useless men to do their fucking jobs.
Stop telling me I’m supposed to blindly support cops. These cowards want to cosplay as soldiers, and when the public they are supposed to serve needed them, they hid and showed us exactly who they are. Every one of these cops is complicit in these murders, and they should be held accountable for their inaction.
This is what happens when people become cops so they can bully and harass people with impunity. Thee cowards aren’t going to risk their lives for anyone. They’re cosplaying.
This police force gets FORTY PERCENT of the city’s budget. This tiny town has a SWAT team. That wasn’t enough to save these children and their teachers.
Fuck the police.
