⚠️WARNING - Proud parent ⚠️ Yesterday was one of THE proudest moments we experienced as parents (to date) of this outstanding young man. It filled me with joy to see @aj_clough pass-in to the @britisharmy at @armyfoundationcollege Harrogate, after it being his life choice from being 8yrs old. What made it even more special was sharing it with my Grandad, who's pride in his first great grandchild was evident and heartwarming, and his Dad @johnnylfc1 and Stepmom @dani_x_jonny who have been on this journey just as much as me. We did a thing 💪🏆🥇 What a day out!😍 Doing it for the olds @wodmania_fitness was an absolute blast, amazing venue, challenging wods which tested our fitness, great bunch of judges and volunteers.... loved it!! Was lush catching up with some familiar faces, it's been a hot minute! 😷 It's been a funny old week 🙁 🤕 Tweaked my ribs/back last week so training has taken a temporary step down to *movement = medicine* for the last 4days. Had a little light back squat session this morning to test it out. It felt good so I'm switching to maintaining for the next 5 days, with a view to getting back to normal training after Christmas. 💉 Booster jab at the weekend knocked me for six, felt groggy and shivery for 36hrs so opted out of a Christmas party ☹ *gutted* (Blessing in disguise as all the trains home were cancelled apparently 😓) 🏃‍♀️Have enjoyed a couple of lower intensity, longer runs and foggy walks, plus loads of stretching to keep the old body in motion 😊 #mastersathlete #fitover40 #Crossfit #Christmas #injury #mindset #blueeyes #positivity https://www.instagram.com/p/CXs8DK9ISRR/?utm_medium=tumblr

Who'd have thought that I could keep another human alive for 17yrs!?! 🤷‍♀️🤣 Honestly when I found out I was going to be a mum all those years ago, I couldn't keep a Tamagochi alive and was barely keeping myself in a fit state 🙈 But that baby boy was the best thing to ever happen to me, he changed my life for the better and I've wanted to be better every day since ❤ I can't believe how fast the time has passed since then to now and AJ remains the single best thing in my life.😍 I am of course blessed with a life of amazing opportunity and happiness, which I owe to my son's affect and influence. "I don't want to get bulky" 🙄 💁‍♀️Heads up "I just want to tone" types, it takes more than using a couple of 5kg dumbbells twice a week to 'get bulky' 😫 I've been asked a few times recently how long it has taken for me to look like I do now. 🤔 Besides the fact that: 1. My physique is a byproduct of the training methodology for the sport I do 2. The way I look is far outweighed by what my body is capable of doing.🏋️‍♀️ 3. When I started this journey I was seriously unhealthy and massively underweight. 🧐 Interestingly, I spotted this bit of data this morning.... Just over 8yrs ago (I was 33yrs old) I began training...not working out, actually training. It happened slowly and unintentionally at first, with a friend PTing me as his 1st client. Beginning to track my food and eventually (3yrs later) finding crossfit, taking my nutrition seriously and training HARD to the present day. I'm now 42yrs old. So when you say, "I don't want to get bulky" or as a girl once said (thinking I was out of earshot) "I dont want to look like Laura" when offered a light squat or deadlift, or anything heavier than a 2kg dumbbell. FACT - Maintainance periods are important!!💪 If you've been in a calorie deficit for 12wk+ you're potentially doing more harm than good for your training and mindset. 🧠 You probably need a maintenance phase to make progress 💁‍♀️ I cut earlier (8wks) this year prior to competing, then switched to maintenance calories and macros, which I've been using the @rpstrength app to support since. This has allowed me to enjoy my strong and lean physique whilst indulging in 1-2 cheat meals per week (including cake!!) staying within the threshold for my maintenance bodyweight. 🙌 This has allowed me to re-set and recover from the depletion of cutting, its given my central nervous system a much needed break and broken the scarcity mindset of a calorie deficit. I'm fueled to perform and recover, both physically and mentally. Simultaneously its helped me hit some PBs across all the disciplines, helping me improve my crossfit performance across the board. Maintainance phases are vital if you take your training seriously. What does progress look like to you? 🤔 How do you measure progress?🤷‍♀️ 👀 Did you know? The way in which we view our progress can impact our appreciation of any progression we have made in our endeavors. If we are too outcome focused we can struggle to see the value in the compound interest of the process. 🧠 This morning @unit4cfp programming revisited the @crossfitgames Open workout 18.1, reimagined as a partner wod. This gave me an opportunity to review my progress. I knew how many rounds I achieved last time I did the workout and I remember vividly how i struggled with the TTB, grip and ultimately torn hands 🖐😭 😊 In reviewing my progress I had the opportunity to celebrate some big wins (massively improved TTB technique, avg faster rounds etc.) But also more subtle process based wins, like being a smarter athlete (i.e grip management, transitions, pacing) and being generally more resilient (mentally, physically and emotionally) in the workout. 💡These more nuanced improvements are easy to overlook if you are only focused on the end result (score). You ok hun????🤔🤷‍♀️ How do you know you're 'ok' when it comes to training load, recovery and health? How do you monitor your individual health markers so you know when to push and when you need to ease off? Our body and mind give us signs and signals all the time, it takes practice to interpret those communications. With the help of some technology, these are some of the things I track: 1. My training - I keep a training log as well as using the whiteboard app at my gym. This allows me to track progress and record notes about my performance each session. 2. My nutrition - by following a structured nutrition plan I can record my meals and therefore track I can correlate benefits of or issues with my diet in relation to training and recovery. 3. Sleep - This is THE single biggest factor in training ability and recovery so tracking is vital for me. 4. My menstrual cycle - my physiology has a huge impact on my training ability and recovery as well as my nutritional needs. 5. My mindset - I have a daily journaling practice which allows me to track my growth and progress holistically and keeps me focused on my goals. It also allows me to observe and make sense of the links between all the data I track. 🙋‍♀️ Hands up if training has kicked your ass this week? A number of factors have contributed to the butt whooping I feel like I've experienced 😆 1. My period is AWOL. I'm currently on day 38 of my cycle, of which my average is 28days 😕 2. I seem to have picked up a low-level cold. 🤧 Nothing serious, just stuffy sinus' and a bit of headache. This could be partly due to my extended menstrual cycle 🤷‍♀️ 3. I feel exhausted! I'm training no harder than normal but recovering less effectively. Again my missing period and the hormonal effects of this are a huge contributor to this fatigue 😫 The moral of the story? WOMEN ARE NOT SMALL MEN! We are hugely impacted by our physiology, mentally, physically and emotionally. Training has to be tailored around our unique needs and synchronised to our cycle to maximise benefit. This is everything I am uncomfortable with; unconditional self love, vulnerability, the whole deal. Third listen/read through and I'm so glad it was our @mindsetrxd #DMGbookclub read this month 🙏 📕 Tribe of Mentors - @timferriss Industry leaders, subject specialists, sports people and inspiring people, all asked the same set of questions providing awesome insights and much more on my reading list. 📘 Rich Dad, Poor Dad - @therealkiyosaki Revisited this as a refresher for conversations to have with my son as he ventures toward his own life adventures and experiences. 📗 Rising Strong - @brenebrown I just love this woman's teachings. Learning how to come back in the face of life changing experience whilst cultivating authenticity and connection. Essential reading whether you've read any of her previous books. 📚 @becomingthe0.1percent - Gareth Timmins One of the best mindset books I've read this year, maybe ever. He explains from his own experience, the methods and motives behind training for the British Royal Marines, then how this is applicable to life and business. I bought this book in hard copy immediately after finishing the audio book so I could re-read and make notes.
