queenash: pleased to announce the arrival of one Asher DeRosa Armbruster. With a lot of struggle and the occasional thought of murdering the father, we’ve now got the cutest baby in this entire town. Look forward to my son growing up to be a ladykiller (or a boykiller, we don’t judge on those preferences).

Just Breathe || Ashroo
ashley-incharge:
Ashley hated this class already and she’d been there for a grand total of five minutes.
The thing was, she was fully aware how young she was. That wasn’t lost on her. She was just barely 18 and she was 34 weeks into her pregnancy. Didn’t mean she had to put up with the other people’s staring. She stared down one of the women until they buckled. Ugly old cow, Ashley thought to herself as she glanced away from the woman who was further along than her.
“Sure…breathing’s part of it I guess. If it were all about breathing I’m sure I’d have this baby with no problems at all.” She wished it were that easy. “I mean I still think drugs is the best choice for me, but the books and stuff I’ve been reading talk about they make stuff harder too. Ugh I hate that there’s no perfect choice.”
Tumblr media
Oof. Ashley was clearly not happy to be here. Not that Roo blamed her one bit. Everything about this was weird and uncomfortable and he felt woefully underprepared, no matter what he did.
Though he did pick up on her worries. He was glad she felt comfortable enough to voice her concerns to him, even if it was mostly only in private. Or as private as sitting in the middle of a class at the hospital can be—he just figured all of the other couples were lost in their own worlds too.
“Well, for whatever its worth, I’m with you either way. Not that its my choice at all,” he clarified. “But still, I don’t think it would be an option if the odds of the drugs being a problem were huge, ya know?”

Just Breathe || Ashroo
Things were getting real, real fast.
Seriously, Roo couldn’t believe he was sitting at the hospital getting ready to participate in a baby delivery class with Ashley. Sure, they’d been shopping for baby supplies and ahd been working on the nursery and he’d even felt little Roo Jr. bopping around like a kid on a sugar rush. But nothing said “HEY BUDDY! YOU’RE ABOUT TO BECOME A DAD!” like sitting in a room with a dozen other pregnant ladies and their partners learning how to breathe properly or whatever.
He glanced over at Ashley who was sitting on the yoga mat beside him and smiled crookedly. “So? You ready to see which one of us can--umm? Breathe the best? That is what this class is about, right?” He was totally joking, but thought Ashley looked a bit tense and hoped to lighten the mood a bit.

Roo was excited. It has been so long since he’d gotten to just hang out with his friend! Between his own life going insane and Nemo’s there really hadn’t been much time to connect.
But finally the opportunity had presented itself. He’d talked his mom into letting Nemo come over, promising to be good while she was at work and since she both liked Nemo and knew that he probably needed a bit of fun and friendship just as much as Roo did, had agreed to let him come over for the afternoon.
Since they’d last really talked, he hadn’t had much chance to research his family history what with all of the drama, but now that he was going to be a dad in just a few short months (gosh, that still freaked him out), he wanted to know who his dad had been more than ever, and he thought it would be helpful to have Nemo over to talk things over with.
He was just firing up his laptop when Nemo walked in and grinned up at his old friend. “Hey!” he said by way of greeting, grinning as he turned back to his laptop to type in his password. “Um, yeah, its no big deal. She’s headed to work soon anyways. Here, have a seat if you want!” He gestured to the open space beside where he was seated criss cross legged on his bed.

Superhero Origins || Neroo
It’d been almost a long time since Roo first revealed to Nemo his magical status and they’d talked about finding Roo’s father– or at least, learning more about where Roo came from after all. Since that time, Roo had found out he was gonna be a dad (still super nutty to Nemo– super, super nutty) and Nemo and Robbie broke up and life had basically, in general, exploded for the both of them.
Nemo hated it. He missed his friend, missed the days when they could go skateboarding or explore Enchantra together– skipping stones or playing pretend or whatever. It felt like those days of summer childhood were really far away now.
But the least Nemo could do was keep his promise. He said he’d help Roo learn about his past, and he meant it. So he texted Roo one day, asking how he was, how Ashley and their kid was, and then brought up his magic again. Had Roo learned anything else? Did he still want to?
Roo said yes and invited Nemo over without Nemo even having to offer. At least that hadn’t changed.
“Heya!” Nemo said when he wandered in, Ms. DeRosa having let him in. He closed the door behind him and raised his eyebrows. “It’s fine that we’re gonna do this with your mum home, right? She’s not gonna eavesdrop or anything is she?”
Tumblr media
Course, Ms. DeRosa had been in her scrubs, so maybe she was gonna head out soon. Still! He had to make sure he was operating in Super Secret Spy mode if necessary!

princess-mei‌:
It was a fifty/fifty chance that Roo told her why he was grounded. She knew that they didn’t know each other well and she probably shouldn’t ask, but once again, her curiosity had gotten the better of her.
And, as Roo hesitated, Mei’s mind flipped through ideas. He’d broken curfew, he’d said a curse word at his mom (yes, this was a groundable offense in the Qin household), or got caught not doing his homework…he didn’t seem the type for something worse really…
When he asked if she was sure she wanted to know, she nodded without another thought. What was she supposed to do when he said it was scandalous? Did he do drugs or something?
“I dunno what would ruin my opinion of you,” Mei blurted. “I mean–I really don’t. People do a lot of things for a lot of reasons.” She shrugged a shoulder. “You didn’t like…kill someone or something, I’m sure. Besides, don’t you know? I’m a crackhead slut, so nothing shocks me.”
Tumblr media
She rolled her eyes and gave him a close-lipped, sardonic smile. The words always hurt, but she tried to joke about it, hoping that would lessen the impact.
Roo smiled sadly at her words. “If it makes you feel better, I always thought that rumor sounded bogus. I mean, I know I didn’t know you at all, but, well—I do know Ashley. And making stuff up about people is sort of her aesthetic.” He rolled his eyes at the thought of Ashley.
“And whats even better than that, you might ask?” he continued, in an attempt to make a joke. “I am most definitely not a murderer! Though, depending on your point of view it might be worse...”
He sighed, pausing as he wondered if he should just tell her—it was sort of personal and she might think it TMI or something. But–well, he didn’t have anything to lose, did he? He didn’t have anyone he could talk to about this stuff aside from Nemo, and Nemo had his own problems that kept him busy.
“Well, it started awhile back when my mom and I had a huge fight—I left and didn’t come home all night. That was enough to get me grounded for at least a month, to be honest. Unfortunately, there’s more, you see. At the time Ashley and I were still sort of but not really seeing each other—it’s complicated. And, well—” he hedged, shifting in his seat. “She invited me over and—stuff.” He finished, tensing up and wondering if Mei would put two and two together.

ashley-incharge‌:
“An awfully big assumption considering the baby’ll probably be born in October.” Was Roo an idiot? Maybe. No definitely. There was no way in hell Ashley was starting college 7 or 8 months pregnant. That was just insane. And she’d miss a bunch of class and it would be utterly pointless to register for that semester.
But there would be time later to tell him how much of an idiot was. They were in the middle of a doctor’s appointment. The nurse carefully applied the cool gel over her, and Ashley forced her gaze away from it and toward Roo as the woman reached to grab her little wand thing to put over it and check her over to make sure everything was fine.
She didn’t want to admit that it would be stupid, but she did acknowledge that someone with the experience might be helpful. She just didn’t want to talk to Roo’s mother. “Hmm…maybe. I still think that-” Whatever she might have said was quickly pushed out of her mind as the wand drifted over her stomach and she could hear (they could all hear) a rapid heartbeat that could in no way be Ashley’s.
“Oh my god…is that?” Ashley glanced away from Roo and onto the screen that showed the shape of their growing baby. It was a little unnerving. “That’s right sweetie. That’s your baby,” the woman said, and though Ashley wanted to be irked by the endearment, she was too busy staring at the screen. That was…it was a baby. It was actually there and happening. She felt her body change but this…wow. Ashley could hardly believe what she was hearing. That was another person’s heartbeat. In her. She wasn’t sure if she was more disturbed or amazed. “Guess it is becoming a baby after all huh? Go figure.”
Tumblr media
Roo rolled his eyes but kept his mouth shut. It really annoyed him when she acted like he was a complete moron, thought he supposed she had never been reasonable or nice. It made him wonder vaguely why he had ever liked her in the first place?
The annoyance was quickly replaced by surprise when the sound of the tiny heart beat filled the room. Was that—
He followed Ashley’s gaze to the nearby monitor, his mouth popping open to a perfectly shaped “O” and his knees went a bit weak. Oh God! That was—their baby. It was real. This was really happening.
Of course, he had known it was happening, but nothing had quite prepared him for seeing their baby alive and healthy on the screen like that. Just—wow.
At Ashley’s comment, he couldn’t help but snort quietly, remembering their text conversation from a few weeks before. “Yeah, I guess it’s not really an alien after all, is it?” His tone held more awe than sarcasm as his eyes remained glued to the screen.

princess-mei‌:
Mei raised her eyebrows.
“You’re grounded?” she asked, slightly scandalized but mostly teasing.
Tumblr media
She certainly wasn’t one to judge. Mei had been grounded several times before coming to Swynlake and several times before that. It wasn’t always her fault either! Sure, she could accept that she had definitely made some mistakes (going to Pixie’s had definitely been one), but most the time her groundings were because her dad and mom were so unfair!
“That sucks. What did you do?”
Maybe she shouldn’t ask. It wasn’t until the words were out of her mouth that she realized it could be something he didn’t want to talk about it. Even though he had been joking and looked to be in good spirits. Mei knew that the real reason she’d been grounded over the summer was almost embarrassing enough to keep her mouth shut about the stupid rehab rumors.
“Yeah, it does suck. Though I guess I deserve it,” he shrugged. “I’ve been an idiot.”
Roo couldn’t help but laugh a little at how straightforward she was with her curiosity. He didn’t mind, not really. It was kind of nice having at least one girl at school not look at him like he was a giant slug or whatever. Though, of course, that might change if she knew what he’d done.
New rumors about Ashley being pregnant were spreading every day—he supposed it was only a matter of time before the whole school knew who was responsible for it.
Besides, he was pretty sure it would look way worse if he avoided it now and she found out through the rumor mill. But then again, she
“Well, it’s kind of ridiculous and dramatic and totally scandalous—are you sure you really want to know?” he pursed his lips thoughtfully. “I mean, it might ruin your opinion of me and that would also kind of suck.”

kangaderosa‌:
Kanga hadn’t really expected the question somehow. Despite having been through it all herself…Roo had never asked her about it before. She knew there were things he took for granted. Kanga had been his mom before anything else for so long. She had dedicated her life to him.
It was hard to explain how it all happened. Just that it had. But Kanga would do her best to share her experience. Maybe it would be helpful to her kid, even if it wasn’t something she wanted to have to talk about with him. The struggles she’d dealt with, the work she’d put in…she was determined to take care of Roo and give him a good life.
“Well…I did it because I had to Roo. I moved here and I got a job that didn’t pay well but would at least pay me something to get by. I got to know people in town and I was able to get help from them when things got incredibly overwhelming. I don’t know how to explain it mijo…I took it a day at a time.” That might not be the most helpful answer, but it was the truth. She just kept at it, she worked, she studied as hard as she could. There were certain hardships she dealt with that he wouldn’t have to. Including carrying the kid.
And he had Kanga, no matter what. He wouldn’t be in the same situation as her. “And I knew that you needed me. You needed me to be your mom and to provide these things for you.”
Tumblr media
Roo felt kind of bad for never really thinking about how much his mom had gone through to make sure he was safe and taken care of all of these years. He’d never really considered what it might have taken for one person to care for both of them until now. How stupid did that make him?
But he was considering it now. Now that it was him facing the unknown world of becoming a father at the age of seventeen.
He huffed out a breathy laugh, his head still resting on her shoulder. “Well, at least I’ve got one thing going for me then—a job that doesn’t pay very well.” He paused before adding, “And you, of course. Thanks for that, by the way. For being here for me. I know I screwed up and I was pretty sure you were going to disown me when I told you.” He leaned in closer, wrapping his arms around her in a hug.
There was so much to think about, it was overwhelming. He honestly still had no idea what to expect, but perhaps his mom was right. “I can do that though,” he said finally. “Take it one day at a time. I guess thats all I can do, huh?”

justkeepdancing-nemo‌:
See, in the Hollow, sparrow men couldn’t run away from their fledglings.
He supposed they could try. But he was pretty sure they’d have to at least wear the crown of thorns, and no one would like them very much. If whispers and disapproving frowns followed Appa for never making a Promise to help him raise Nemo, he couldn’t imagine what the Hollow would think of someone who refused to be there for their own child. But then, the Hollow was a close community. Even Nemo– though Appa had never asked for help, there’d been plenty of pixies who offered to help raise him alongside Appa. And Nemo sorta kinda had mothers in Pluma, one of the nursing-talents who did his massages, and in Mistral, his talent-head.
And of course, Queen Clarion. She was a little like a mother to every fairy.
He was glad Roo realized that running away was not the solution. Even mustering up all the sympathy he could, Nemo woulda been very disapproving of that. A little fledgling didn’t deserve such a selfish thing.
But Roo got it. Of course Roo would never have gone through with it.
“It won’t be so bad,” Nemo reassured. “At least, it won’t be just bad all the time. I’ll help you however I can, I swear! I love fledglings.” His smile returned, dimple sweet. “And I bet my Appa! He would too! If you ever wanna talk to him about being a dad or stuff, he’d probably have a lot of great advice.”
Roo cringed a little at the idea of telling Marlin. You see, he really liked Nemo’s dad and hated the idea of disappointing yet another person in his life. This whole situation was humiliating. But—Nemo had brought up a good point. Roo was going to need all the help he could get and even if it was embarrassing, maybe Marlin would have some good advice?
He was thankful that he had such a good friend in Nemo. If nothing else, he was the ray of sunshine when Roo needed a bit of light in his life. At this point, Roo had no idea what to expect—the future felt really kinda dark.
He liked babies and thought they were cute. But what did it mean to be a dad? Surely there was more to it than just bottles and diapers and making cute faces, right?
“You’re right,” he said, with a nervous smile. “It won’t be so bad. It might even be good. Plus it helps knowing I’m not alone, so thanks.” He gave his friend an affectionate nudge with his elbow.
“Ashley asked me if I wanted to take the baby myself or give it up for adoption. I thought about it for a long time too—there are tons of people out there who would make a way better parent than me. Can you imagine? Me as a single dad? At the age of seventeen?” He sighed. “I sure can’t.”

ashley-incharge‌:
The one bright side about all this was that the baby wouldn’t be born until after Ashley graduated from secondary. That was a positive. She might have to start college later than she wanted, but at least she wouldn’t have to worry about secondary and a baby.
“That’s more of a you problem than a me problem,” Ashley pointed out helpfully, trying not to stare at some of the heavily pregnant women. This place was unsettling. She kind of hated it. “I’d guess you’d take afternoons and evenings then if that’s the routine and I’ll take the kid during the day.” That was at least a possibility while the baby was still tiny and needed lots of care and attention. From there? Well she had no idea.
“Ashley Armbruster?” A nurse called out, and she sighed, getting to her feet and gesturing for Roo to come with her. She’d only had one of these appointments alone, but she didn’t like the experience much so far. The nurse led them into a room and asked all these questions on how she was feeling and whether she’d handled the nausea okay while Ashley settled onto the cot in the middle of the room. “By the way, this is the father, so expect him to be present for as many of these appointments as there end up being.”
She glanced over at Roo, as if daring him to say something stupid as she rolled up her shirt and exposed just the slightest curve of her stomach. It was hardly anything compared to the women they’d seen outside…but it still felt monumental to her. “Do you expect to have your mom involved in things too?”
Tumblr media
“Is it really?” he questioned. “I just assumed you were going to uni in the fall, but ok. Yeah. That works. I’m sure I’ll be able to work with Al to fix my work schedule.”
When the nurse called Ashley back, he followed, glancing around curiously. He’d been in the hospital too many times to count over the years, but never the OB/GYN clinic. It had a much different feel—for one, it was so...girly. And for another, it didn’t have quite the same smell of strong disinfectant.
When they got to the exam room, he just stood to the side and crossed his arms, watching as Ashley rolled up her shirt to expose her stomach. His eyes widened at bit as he noticed the slight curve—that hadn’t been there before, had it? He was quiet, however, not wanting to draw attention to himself or the nurse might tell him off for being a jerk who got this “poor girl” pregnant or something.
At her question, he tore his eyes away from the baby bump and met her expectant gaze. “Oh, um—well, yeah. Though I guess it’s more of a question of her wanting to be involved with her grandchild, isn’t it?” He shrugged. “The answer is yes, by the way. She wants to be involved. Besides, she’s actually done this whole baby thing before so it would be stupid not to have her involved, don’t you think?”

Roo’s life had been flipped turned upside down and everything felt outside his control. Of course, some of it was his own fault—like the fact that he was going to be a teenage father in the very near future. Some of it he was just along for the ride—like the fact that he’d been born a magick and had abilities he now had to learn how to use properly.
One thing had remained 100% the same, however—his art.
Roo clung to this like a lifeline, using every spare moment when he wasn’t working to create. And since he was grounded for pretty much the rest of his life, he spent as much time after school in the art studio as his teacher would allow. As long as he had a school related activity, he could avoid his own personal house arrest for at least a few hours a day.
Which is what brought him to the art studio that afternoon. He’d long since finished his oil pastel still life for the final project and had moved on to drawing the other sets in different mediums just for fun. He’d just started sketching the costume jewelry set in a sort of Picasso style because, why not?
He’d heard the studio door open and shut and glanced over at the greeting. It was Mei—the really cool sorcerer girl he’d talked to Rome. She’d been really nice—and fun to draw! He grinned and turned toward her in reply. “Hey Mei! Yeah, I’m usually here after school any day I’m not scheduled to work at The Comic Barn. Since it’s ‘school work’,” he laughed, drawing quotes in the air with his fingers, “Its an acceptable alternative to being grounded at home.”
Tumblr media
Still Life ❤️ [Roomei]
@littlemister-roo
Mei had chosen an art elective, not out of any great love for art, but because she didn’t really want to do anything else. She could’ve done choir, but Mei had been too intimidated when first coming to Swynlake. Choirs were always tight-knit, Mei would know, since she’d done choir at her old school. She didn’t want to risk not fitting in to her elective.
Art was chill–and fun! Better than her academic classes. And she wasn’t terrible. She wasn’t great, but she had a good time messing around with it and trying all the different mediums and techniques. It wasn’t anything she was gonna continue at any point, but a nice relaxing hour and a half every day.
For their final project, they could choose between three different still life objects and draw them in one of the mediums they’d learned about. Mei had chosen the table made up of a fake crown and costume jewelry–and water colors, because she thought they were the prettiest. Today, she was staying behind after school to work on it for a little bit, since she tended to get distracted in class talking to people and not actually drawing.
When she entered the art room, the light was already turned on and she spotted–
“Oh! Hi Roo,” she chirped, giving him a little smile. They weren’t friends…but they weren’t unfriendly either, which was a relief. “I didn’t expect anyone else to be here.” She set her bag down at her usual table, which happened to be next to the one he was working at.

kangaderosa‌:
Kanga was having a difficult time keeping steady herself. Her son got a girl pregnant! She couldn’t believe he could be so stupid after how many times she had told him to be safe. That the best way to avoid this was to practice safe sex. She had to take several breaths herself to keep steady and be the proper support her son needed.
There would still be time for yelling. And she was certain she would be doing it soon enough. It was incredibly frustrating to see her hopes for Roo’s future fade a little. His life would be so much more difficult. It broke her heart.
“You can do it if that’s what you really want to do mijo. I did.” She ran a gentle hand through his hair, kissing the top of his head to soothe him and well…it soothed her too a bit to baby him even for a small moment. “I know the decisions that are coming at you and the mother are going to be difficult ones. Ultimately it’s up to you both. If you want to be the baby’s dad then do that. I can support you as much as possible. You know I’ll never kick you out of this house. If you need a space to raise that kid I can help you have that.”
She sighed, running a hand through her hair. “Your life will be different though. You won’t be able to do all the things that your friends will be doing because you’ll have to take care of your kid. It’ll be hard dear. It’s not impossible, but it is incredibly hard. You need to be aware of that.”
Tumblr media
Roo sighed. He knew this, though it wasn’t like he had all that busy of a social life anyways. But still—there would probably be no more parties or whatever.
“Thanks mom. I—I know. Though I guess it won’t really feel real until it happens, yeah? Good thing my social life is nearly non existent.” He laughed nervously, the sound a bit hollow, even to his own ears.
It helped knowing that he wasn’t alone, that his mom was exactly the opposite of Ashley’s parents. Still though—the thought of having a baby in the house that he was responsible for? It was overwhelming and terrifying to even think about.
He leaned his head against his mom’s shoulder. “How—” he started, uncertain. “How did you do it? All these years, I mean? How did you survive all alone with just you and me so far from your home without any family at all?”
