The Months in Between chapter 9
CHAPTER 9
It's the night of the charity event for the Firetown flood. It's being held uptown at the Argentum Aurum Hotel. The fanciest hotel in all of Element City. Everyone who's anybody is going to be there. The Mayor even prepared a speech. Brooke wanted to spare no expense and rented out a limousine for the Ripple family to pick up the Lumens. It's black tie event and Wade is in a black tux with a bowtie (like the Oscar art). He steps out of the limo to the Shop, it's closed early for the event. He looks a bit nervous because last time he was here he got into a huge shouting match with Bernie. He takes a big gulp and walks into the Shop.
Upstairs Cinder is helping her daughter with the final touches in her dress. It's like a cross between her familiar black dress and ceremonial gem robe. It's backless and long flowing. She is wearing long gloves, a surprise for Brooke, with matching dangling earrings. Cinder is beaming at her daughter. "Oh it's like I'm getting you ready for your wedding day."
Ember looking nervous, "Àshká! It's just a fancy party. Think of it as a big celebration for you and dad retiring!"
Cinder agrees, "Oh yes, I am very much looking forward to it."
Ember gets up to go look at herself in the mirror. She smiles brightly and then turns to her mom to ask. "You think Wade will like the dress?"
Cinder having done hundreds of matches tells her daughter, "He may be Water but he's still a guy." She puts her arm around her and says with a smile. "I think he has the hots for you."
Ember laughs.
From downstairs in the Shop. Wade walks in to the closed store. The only light source is coming from the Blue Flame in the back and Bernie sitting up front at the table by the window. Bernie clears his throat and waves at Wade.
Wade nervously adjusts his tie and walks over to the table. Wade doesn't know where to start but with a greeting. "Hello, you look great."
Bernie nervously, "Thank you, you look good too."
Both men look down but Wade pokes his head back up first. "Hey I'm sorry about the other day. I meant no disrespect."
Bernie nods his head, "Hmm, I apologize for my outburst too." He pauses then tells Wade, "Actually I'm impressed you stood up to me. You need do exactly that for Ember when I'm not around."
Wade smiles, "Yes sir. Anything for her." He takes a seat across the table and asks. "They're not ready yet huh?"
"Nope." Not knowing what else to stay Bernie asks "So how's work going? I hear good things about you all the time from our customers."
Wade smiles at this but then says, "Honestly I hate it. My job is finding mistakes, give the bad news, and don't do a thing about it. If it wasn't for my mom's architect knowledge helping me come up with good news to give people, I wouldn't know how much longer I could do this. It's tons of added work but the result has been faster repairs and more importantly happier people. Making that connection is what's worth it to me. That and I'm saving up for something special."
"Connecting with people is why I wanted the Fireplace. Though the work is hard and with long hours. Not always fun but I had a responsibility to take care of my wife and Ember."
Wade gets real with Bernie as he leans forward to stare at the Blue Flame from across the room. "Having Ember in my life has given me such drive and focus. It's made working so much easier." Wade takes a pause then decides to tell Bernie something big. "I want to ask her to marry me one day."
Bernie looks at Wade giving him a straight face with slightly widen eyes and raised eyebrows. Wade turns to look at Bernie. You can tell Wade is very serious and sincere about what he has just said. Saying what he feels in his heart.
At the same time this is happening Cinder has come down the stairs and sings "We're ready!" She is excited the most for this party. Both men stand up for their ladies. From behind Cinder comes Ember.
You thought Wade was excited to see Ember at the movies this is ten times that only without the water works. He almost forgets how to breath as he stares at her beauty.
As Ember walks up to Wade they both can't keep their eyes off each other, smiling too. Ember's beautiful light is showing.
Cinder gets to her husband first and takes ahold of his arm. Bernie smiles softly at her then the both smile up at Ember.
Ember gets to Wade. He softly, almost in a whisper says. "You look so beautiful." Never looking away from her eyes they both reach for each other's hands. It's only when they touch does Wade realizes. "You're wearing gloves?"
Ember tells him. "It's a surprise for your mom. She seems like she always wants to give me a hug for some reason."
Cinder being nosy asks, "So what did you two talk about while we were getting ready?"
Wade has a slightly nervous look on his face. He is hoping Bernie doesn't give away his huge secret but he wanted him to know how serious he loves Ember.
Bernie calmly, "Oh nothing big. Just work and guy stuff." Cinder looks a little suspicious but then shrugs it off.
Wade smiles and takes the opportunity to get going. "Come on. My mom is in the limo waiting for us." Bernie and Cinder arm and arm step out first. Ember takes Wade's arm and he places his hand on top of hers as they walk out too.
In the limo ride over. Cinder and Brooke are enjoying their time together. Chatting it up like they are old time girlfriends with glasses of Champaign in their hands. Wade and Ember stair at them like they just caught two Earth elements pruning.
Wade whispers to Ember "Is this weirding you out too because we didn't introduce them to each other?"
"Yep."
Bernie is sitting cross armed next to Uncle Harold, "I got to say your vest is just so colorful."
Bernie thinking it's a weird complement, "Uhhh, thank you?"
Uncle Harold continues, "I just love working with colors."
Bernie doesn't know where he is going with this and feels uncomfortable that he scoots away from him just a bit.
Curious Ember asks, "So how did you two meet?"
It's a flash back. Brooke starts the story. "I went to the Fireplace the morning you started the welding job." Brooke walks into the Shop with her head held high and sees Cinder. "I knew who Cinder was the moment I saw her, the family resemblance is undeniable."
Cinder stops and stares up at the water women with an untrusting squint in her eyes. Cinder knew who she was too but still asks, "Mrs. Ripple?"
Brooke goes, "Mrs. Lumen?" It's like a stand off as they pause.
Then Cinder speaks. "Would you care for some tea?"
"I'd love some!" Brooke proclaims. And they been good friends ever since.
Bernie leans over to Wade and Ember, "It's weirding me out too."
Wade tells Bernie, "I wonder what stories they know?"
Cinder points to Wade, "I know about the sponge!"
"AH!" Wade goes and backs away. Ember looks horrified with him.
Brooke follows up with, "So treat Ember right, not that you wouldn't dear." She says with a smile on her face.
Bernie asks, "What's a sponge?"
Ember whispers near Wade's face, "Don't worry, if she ever has one, I'll just burn it."
Wade smiles and relaxes putting his arm around Ember, "My hero."
The limo pulls up to the hotel lobby entrance. The place is huge like a convention center with a massive staircase. Lake with Ghibli and Allen with his family are on the steps waiting for the rest of the Ripples. On the same steps are Flarrietta and Flarry waiting for Bernie and Cinder.
Wade and Ember are the last to step out of the limo. Wade then notices Ember's dress is backless. Wade gets a silly nervous look on his face, blushes, and rubs the back of his head trying to quite down the popping thought bubbles. Ember doesn't catch his nervousness but his siblings do.
Allen see's Wade's face first and jokes around with him, "Hey what's wrong Bro?"
Lake adds on, "Yeah, you nervous about something?"
Brooke chimes in, "Oh you two stop it." As Wade smiles nervously.
Flarrietta waves over to the Lumens, "Oy, we saved you a table."
Bernie and Cinder turn to their daughter. Cinder tells Ember, "You go stay with Wade's family." Bernies says with a smile, "We'll mingle with you all after we catch up with the other Firish."
Wade goes, "Hey we can stop by too."
Flarry steps forward, "We got enough room for your family too."
Ember smiles at this and glows bright.
Inside the hotel's grand hall. It really is a melting pot of all Elements including Firish guests, workers, food, and art on display. Vinny, Gale, and other Construction leads in their best dress are in a circle chatting and laughing. The Firish welders are sitting with other construction men of different Elements with their wives and families all chatting. Their kids are even playing with each other. A Earth boy is chasing around a Firish boy laughing. A Water and Air kid pops in to play too. Jimmy and Wendy are lovingly dancing with each other. This charity ball doesn't feel like a depressing event but a grand celebration of the whole City coming together.
Wade looks around with Ember. "Wow, this is even cooler then I thought."
Cinder and Bernie are sitting down at a fancy table. They've gotten their familiar Firish food and drinks. Cinder tells her husband. "Now this is how to start off a retirement." Bernie smiles at her and they chime their glasses together in a toast.
There's a dance floor with music. Wade and Ember are dancing together. It just feels like the perfect celebration for the two of them.
Wade says to her. "Can this be an unofficial redo of my high school prom?"
Ember with her head on his chest laughs, "Only if it's redo of mine too." She pulls back to look at him. "I'm really looking forward to our weekend together."
Wade looks into her eyes and nearly a whisper. "Me too." He slides his hand a little lower on her bare back and rubs his thumb across.
His touch sends electric like waves through Ember's body but she is very good at hiding it. She then places a hand on his cheek. He closes his eyes expecting a kiss on other cheek but it ends up being more of a kiss on his jaw closer to his neck. He pulls back to look at her. Trying to read her face like he did when they first touched. Ember is giving him the half lidded, droopy, bedroom eyes. Wade softens and gives the same look back. He is one lucky Water guy. The music stops and an announcer asks everyone to take their seat. Wade says something to Ember about meeting her back at the seat. As Ember sits down she motions to Brooke and Allen to come closer since the event is a bit loud.
"I know what I want to give Wade but till need you're help with it later."
Brooke smiles and Allen goes, "You got it Ember."
Wade sits back down next to Ember and takes ahold of her hand as the Mayor of Element City begins his speech. He's an older Water man.
"My fellow Elements. When this City was founded four hundred years ago, Water had a vision. They took their first steps out of the sea and looked to sky. They felt the earth on their feet, the warmth from the sun on their bodes, and took a breath of fresh air. The Water of that time knew that this City would be the perfect place for all Elements to call home. Though throughout the years we have struggle to find common ground with each other. One thing has remained the spirit of our City and that is helping those in need in times of hardship. Our Firish community has been hurt. Out of all the disasters this City has face I have never seen such resilience and openness come from such Elements as we have from the Firish. From the new Welders on the upper banks."
The Firish men cheer. Vinny and the other construction crew clap too.
"And the shops in Firetown." Firish business owners cheer but Bernie stays humbly silent and smiles.
The Mayor continues. "One shop in particular has been at the heart of our rebuild. Opening it's doors to all Elements helping to rebuild the community. And I hear their food is really good too."
The crowd laughs. Bernie and Cinder look at each other and shrug. What business are they talking about?
"Which is why I am proud to award the key to the City to Bernie and Cinder Lumen of the Fireplace!"
Bernie and Cinder are in shock. They were not expecting this kind of recognition. Neither was Ember as she brings her hand up to her face in shock and happy tears. She turns towards her parents and motions them to go up there. Flarrietta and Flarry tell them to go there too as they clap. Wade and the Ripples are surprised and they start crying happy tears. Wade puts his hands on Ember's shoulder for support. Which in turn, she puts one of her hands on top of his as she watches her parents go up on stage.
As the Mayor hands Bernie the key he says. "The Fireplace is now officially marked forever as a historical site in all of Element City." He whispers to Bernie, "Which means all code violations are grandfathered in." And winks.
Bernie looks surprised at Ember and Wade then smiles.
Ember is clapping and Wade gives a goofy grin with a shrug as he claps. Ember is in tears of joy and thinks so herself what a perfect way for her parents to retire to.
Author's Note: this wasn't supposed to be the end of this chapter but the next few chapters I wrote were so much fun! They ended up being long then I thought. XDD!!

The Months in Between Chapter 8
CHAPTER 8
The next morning Wade and River are in Firetown. Wade finished writing up a list of violations for a brick apartment building and is now challenging River to spot the violations he took note of. All she could talk about is how soot filled the apartments are from all those added chimney fires. She is disgusted by it.
"Agh all this filthy charcoals and brunt logs everywhere are just eww." River says nearly gaging.
Wade from behind her rolls his eyes, "Did you even look at the structures I pointed out?"
"Oh those pipes? Yeah they should be over those nasty fires." River suggests.
"No. No. Very wrong. Did you hear what I said about building when we walked in?"
"That is was originally build for Earth? Which is why the chimneys are illegal." River claims with her fist in her hand.
"No those are part of the original build. What is not original was all the extra piping in each room." Wade points out.
"Yeah that's because Earth uses extra water." She states frankly.
"Regardless of Earth, Fire, whatever Element those added pipes are unnecessary and are causing extra leaks. Which is why the building now has foundational issues." Wade looks at the time. It's close to lunch and he promised a favor for Vinny. Wade then instructs River. "I need you to pull the original blue prints for that building and email them to me. Meet me at the next address at 2pm. It's long lunch break today because I got a special project to take care of."
"What? Why the blue prints? Are job is finish once we cite the violations." River protests.
"Wrong again because these are emergency repairs we got to write action plans, solutions, for the city to repair those violations quickly." Wade states.
"Sounds like unnecessary work." River questions. "It would be easier if they just moved."
Wade is getting frustrated, "Well, this is what you signed up for." Then he turns to leave. If he's lucky River will just quit.
At the Fireplace. Bernie is checking inventory as two construction guys walk in. One is an Air and the other an Earth Element. Seeing as they are not Firish, Bernie is immediately not thrusting of the two, and keeps a close eye on them.
The Air guy floats by showing his coworker around, "Oh man this place is great! You're really going to love these snacks. They've been a life safer on the job. Killer flavor!"
"Can't wait to try 'em."
Flarrietta greets them like old time regulars, "Ráì khìf! Great to see you again! We got a special on these mini kol nuts today, buy one get one."
"Nice! I'll take some!"
Bernie looks confused. He's never thought any other element would like Firish food other then the Firish. As the two construction workers leave Bernie them hears him say.
"This place is the best. Can't find one of these in Element City."
Berne knew his place was special but in the whole City?
"Wade!" Flarrietta, Flarry, and Cinder all say hi as Wade steps in because he is the best regular they have, always getting Ember some extra fuel for her lunches at work. Bernie watches him.
"Hello Everyone!" Wade says as he jogs to the back to the Blue Flame.
"Yo, yo, yo Wade!" Clod runs up to him point at his head for water.
Wade stops with a skid on one leg, almost loosing his balance, and gives Clod some water out of his hand. "Here ya go!"
Clod is refreshed by Wade's water "Ahhh."
Wade runs up to the Blue Flame and grabs a log underneath. He quickly mumbles the same prayer he always does. Bernie catches what he says. "Thank you for keeping Ember safe and please keep her burning bright." The with a little trick he figured out, holds the log right on the edge of the cauldron, and uses his hip to bump it in. Nice and dry the log flows in making it flicker less and glow brighter. Wade turns back around to Flarrietta, "Is the food ready yet? Anything I can do to help?"
Flarrietta, "Oy it's just getting packing it up now. Are you going to be able to carry all of this yourself?"
"A buddy of mine is stopping by to help me out." Wade tells her.
"Oh good because this is a lot of Firish treats." Flarry says turning around with a few big boxes in hand.
Wade dreamily, "Yep, only the best for my Ember."
"YOUR EMBER?!" Bernie says angrily.
"AH!" Wade jumps in surprise and starts to sweat. He turns to look at a very angry Bernie with his hands on his hips. A nervous Wade starts to ramble. "I.. I.. I.. Didn't Mean.. That's not what I.." Bernie just stairs at him angrily and fumes brightly. Wade then drops his shoulders and head in defeat. Wade decides to speak honestly from the heart. "I meant no disrespect sir, I just really love your daughter very, very much."
Bernie starts to soften a bit. He can't get over the fact that some Water guy loves his daughter as much as he and his wife do. Maybe even more.
Just then the shop door opens and in walks another Water guy. "Jimmy over here!" Wade calls out. Wade turns back to Bernie. "I don't want to be rude but I'm in a hurry." Then he turns to leave with Jimmy carry out the big catering order.
Bernie starts fuming again but the little Earth boy Clod braving goes up to him. "Umm excuse me sir?" Bernie turns to the boy and Clod nervously explains, "Wade is surprising Ember and the other Firish at the job site with a huge lunch from here." Bernie softens again.
Flarrietta is getting annoyed by Bernie's outburst and tells him honestly, "You need to calm down. Wade is a good person. Even did a quick prayer to the Blue Flame."
Cinder was next to Flarrietta this whole time watching and she tells her. "I'm starting to think this isn't a Fire Water thing."
The Shop door opens and it's another Firish business owner from down the street. "Hey did you guys hear on what the city council just voted on?"
Overhead shot of the job site. The site looks almost complete with less scaffolding and less construction material laying around but the waterfall is still raging on. Bright yellow light can be seen glowing from inside the falls. Inside Ember and Vinny are working together on a complicated weld. Their finger tips just millimeters away from the fast flowing water.
"Just a bit more." Vinny has trouble saying from all the concentration he's putting out on that weld. Ember has her black googles on just remaining still and focused. She brightens up with intensity on the last bit of weld, heats up through the water, and completes fusing the metal together. She and Vinny both relax at a job well done. Vinny yells, "OKAY! PULL US UP!"
They are both on a platform that get raised up through the waterfall. As it does we can see Vinny looking very tired and soaked even in the water proof suit. Ember looks the same but more calm then tired with her eyes closed. She takes a deep breath in and as she exhales the water on her suit steams away from her body. She is becoming a master of her own flame.
All the other construction workers and Firish welders cheer. Celebrating this huge milestone in the repairs. Vinny and Ember step off the platform, "Not much longer now plus we are ahead of schedule.
Ember groans, "Agh finally." But Vinny can see she isn't tired but playing it off for the other Firish who couldn't do the work she did.
Vinny continues, "I would offer you more work but I know you'll say no with the glass internship coming up. Need a reference from me let me know. I'll write you one anytime."
Ember laughs, "Yeah I could really use the break but I appreciate you offering the opportunity and thank you." She smiles at Vinny.
Vinny then starts to look serious, "Have you heard about the city council's vote on the Firetown flood yet?"
Ember looks confused"No?"
Vinny then spots Wade, "Ah, food is here. I'll tell you about it after." Vinny turns to the rest of the crew. "Lunch is here everyone, dig in!"
Ember brightens up at the site of Wade. She can't help but feel so excited to see her boyfriend. Ever since he pitch the weekend idea with him, only him. Out of all the amazing opportunities she's gotten the past few months, being his girlfriend has been the best one. She has never felt so sure of anything in her life. Ember practically pounces on Wade in a hug.
Wade nearly falls backwards with a laugh. "Hey don't worry about me go eat." He then jokes "Man you're heavy." As Ember lets go of him and she shakes her head at his comment.
Jimmy over hears this, "Dude, never tell your girl she's heavy. I made that mistake once."
Wade argues with his friend. "It's not her it's the suit."
Ember laughs and tells Jimmy, "Wade's right it's the suit but thanks for having my back. I'm glad Wendy forgave you too."
Everyone is laughing and having a great time. Ember picks up a Kol nut and just as she is about to take a bite freaking River chimes in.
"Eww why is there an open flame here? This seems way too dangerous to be on the job site." As River points to the cauldron holding the Blue Flame.
A very annoyed Ember and everyone else, especially the other Firish workers, turn to look at River. "Removing the Blue Flame from this site are grounds for Religious discrimination."
Wade adds standing next to Ember with his arms crossed, "Which is violation of City policy and very illegal."
River simple and uncaringly, "Oh, sorry."
Jimmy tells Wade, "How is that not Elementalism?"
Wade shakes his head in annoyance, steps up to River, "What are you doing here? I told you to meet me at the next address in Firetown."
River coyly, "I wanted to inspect this site and make sure the work is up to par." She turns to look at Ember. River is talking specifically about her work on the welds. But Ember doesn't need to defend herself as Vinny steps in.
"Yeah I'm not going to let some intern inspect my job site." Vinny says bluntly.
River annoyed, "Why not? You let some intern work on it."
"City employee as of last week."
Ember turns to Vinny, "What?" Wade is next to her smiling.
"Congrats Kid, you've had a raise as a entry level welder, it's well deserved."
Wade is so excited for her he puts his arms up and cheers, "WooHoo! That's awesome! Congrats Babe!" He then picks her up despite the heavy suit to twirl her around. "This will look so good on your resume!" He couldn't be happier for her. He puts her down and hears his girlfriend ask him.
"Babe?" Ember looks up at him with a raised eyebrow.
"Oh. Hehe." Wade is embarrassed but then nervously laughs it off and shrugs his shoulders.
Ember grabs his tie and pulls him in close. "I like it." She tells him then gives him a kiss. It's short kiss because they're in public but both are looking at each other wishing they weren't.
River huffs at the scene and storms off. Everyone laughs.
As Ember and Wade turn back to grab food she tells him, "Yeah I not worried about her at all but I'm sorry you're dealing with that."
"It is what it is. Oh I have something else for you other then food for once." He pulls out a small bag and hands it to her. "It's a special type of sand from glass internship."
Ember looks at the bag then smiles up at her Boyfriend.
"I'll meet you at the Shop after work since I'll be in the area, love you." Wade gives her a kiss on the head then goes back to work with a smile on his face.
Lunch was fabulous but it's now nearing the end of day for Ember's welding job. Her phone keeps vibrating and she finally goes to check it. It's all messages from her mom, Flarrietta, and even Clod all saying get to the Shop ASAP. Ember shows Vinny the messages.
"Sounds urgent. It must be from that city council vote. We're ahead of schedule so you can head out early to take care of this." Vinny tells her.
"Okay, thank you." Ember gets on her motorbike and heads to Firetown.
Inside the Fireplace. It's getting dark from the sunsetting. Flarrietta, Flarry, Cinder, Clod, and whoever else is shopping in the store and all starring wide eyed at the scene folding out in front of them.
Wade is pleading with Bernie, "Please let me explain."
"YOU LIED TO ME!! ALL OF YOU PROMISED THERE WOULD BE NO MORE WATER!!" Bernie is glowing from his anger.
Wade is boiling and sweating from the waves of Bernie's heat but isn't backing down. "It's has to stay in order for the water to go somewhere otherwise the pressure can build back up and another disastrous flood will happen." The next part Wade stands up firm and says. "And I am working hard to make sure Ember, you, or anyone else here in Firetown will NOT be in that kind of danger again."
"SO YOU LET THE ONE THING THAT CAN KILL US STAY?! WATER IS DANGEROUS!!" Bernie steps towards Wade his fits to his side balled up in rage.
Wade is so upset he can't tell if Bernie is taking about the water staying in Firetown or him personally. "I AM NOT DANGEROUS!"
Ember hears the shouting from outside the Shop, enters through the front door in a panic, and yells. "What is going on?!"
Bernie speaks first, "HE LIED TO US! WATER IS STAYING IN FIRETOWN!"
Ember ran up next to Wade as her father speaks. She is noticing how much of Wade's water is sweating and bubbling out. Not only that but the shelves around her father are almost lit up in flames. Wade looks to Ember hoping she will be the voice of reason to calm her father down. "Àshfá calm down you'll start a fire in the Shop and Wade isn't lying."
Bernie yells, "WHAT?"
Ember has stepped out in front of Wade with her arms open. She doesn't want to fight with her dad but he needs to hear this. "Àshfá, I've been working at the water's source for months, I understand the city council's decision because Elements need water."
"NO FIRE NEEDS WATER!" Bernie yells.
"I do Àshfá, I want my boyfriend to feel safe here." She motions to Clod. "I want Clod to get a drink of water from the Shop and my new friend Wendy, the construction crew too."
The Air and Earth construction worker from before are hiding behind a small chair one says to the other. "A little water here would be nice." They nod in agreement.
Wade steps up next to Ember and cautiously states, "The council also voted to lower the water on the Wetro so no more over flow from above." He gently takes Embers hand as he continues. "And the city is installing heaters, as well as more water reductions, and splash zone warnings because Element City is a City for all."
The last part triggers Bernie. Even though his second language skills aren't the best he clearly remembers the banner for the Vivisteria tree all those years ago reading: for ALL to see. "CITY FOR ALL?! WHERE WAS THAT CITY WHEN WE CAME HERE? WHERE WAS THAT REDUCED WATER SO MY PREGNANT WIFE DIDN'T GET HURT?" Bernie is glowing in angry but with something new that Ember spots, tears?
Ember crouches down to her Father, grabs his hands, and calmly tells. "I know mistakes have happened in the past but that doesn't mean we can't move forward and connect to a better future together."
Bernie Looks into ember's worried face and is finally calming down to her words. As he does he looks around at the patrons in his Shop. All different elements. He even spots a younger fire guy holding hands with an air girl. Bernie looks back at his daughter and they share a big hug. Cinder comes around the corner and hugs them too. "Times really are getting better. I can smell it." Cinder proclaims. The Lumen family laughs.
Wade is holding back tears at the beautiful scene in front of him.
Ember tells her dad, "Come on Àshfá let's go rest after a long day." He nods at his daughter with a smile and he with Cinder walk hand in hand upstairs.
Ember turns back to Wade. Wade puts his hands up, "I. I didn't mean to cause a fight and I meant no disrespect. I-." He gets cut off by Ember hugging and kissing him.
She pulls back and joking says, "Thanks for not putting my dad out and I'm glad he didn't boil you away too."
Wade puts his hand over his mouth in shock and proclaims. "HUH! I would never."
Ember laughs and put her head on his chest. "I know you wouldn't." Wade hugs her back. She reluctantly pulls away and tells him. "I promise to call you later tonight. My dad and I still need to work things out."
Wade gives her an understanding smile and nod.
The Lumen's all sit around the kitchen table for dinner. It's quiet. Bernie looks tired from his earlier out buster but is now calm and content looking. Ember is determined to not let this change in him go and wants to bring back up the idea of her and Wade living together. She going to ease into it first.
"I found out I got a raise from work today after putting in my notice for the glass internship."
Cinder is first to speak, having her back, "Oh that's wonderful sweetie." Bernie looks up at her and smiles.
Ember continues, "Yeah this extra money is a surprise. I'm thinking about using it to let Wade go back to school to find his dream while I'm at the glass internship." She eyes her dad for his reaction.
Bernie smile's fades and raises his voice, "Oh no, it's not good to let a man not provide."
Ember stands up to her father, slams her hands on the table, and raises her voice back, "What exactly do you have against Wade?"
Cinder looks at the two of them and quickly walks off to the other room, "I'll just let you two work this out." Honestly Cinder has been dying for them to finally have this talk. She may even gossip to her new friend Brooke about it.
Bernie calms downs and has a serious talk with his daughter, "Look I don't know how Water does this but Firish-"
"He's not Firish." Ember interrupts
Bernie puts his hands up and calmly but firmly, "Please let finish."
Ember sits back down to hear what he has to say but is in no way backing down if she needs to defend Wade again. He's done nothing wrong.
Bernie continues, "Firish men are the head of the household. They are the providers. It is their responsibility to care of their wife and children. They also don't move in together unless they are married. That is what your mother and I did. It has brought us great happiness. Which is what I want to have happen for you and Wade." Bernie was sincere on the last part. He loves his daughter and other then the fact that Wade is Water he does see he is a good man.
Ember has a realization and then points out, "Then why train me to take over the Shop or even let me do this welding job? Sounds like work a Firish man is supposed to do."
Bernie tells Ember, "I thought it was your dream at the time and this isn't Fire Land so..." Bernie pauses as it hits him. Traditions can be different here then in Fire Land. He was a part of that change and didn't even realize it.
Ember smiles at this and tells her father. "You know, I did learn a lot about love from watching you and mom. How you guys sacrificed and struggled. You were always there for each other and for me too." Bernie watches his daughter speak to him and brightens up. "Wade has helped me when I was struggling with my anger. We have made sacrifices to help our community like you and mom did with the Fireplace. We're always there for each other, in good times and bad. Love has always been the foundation and I can't thank you and mom enough for teaching me what that looks like." A tear escapes Ember's eye as she finishes.
"Hmm, I'm so happy you learn this from us and it really is time to let you live your life on your terms. I am so proud of you my daughter." Bernie smiles at her.
Ember gets more teary eyed and hugs her dad. "Oh Àshfá!"
Bernie hugs her back, "What's with the tears, Wade is really rubbing off on you, huh?"
Ember laughs as her father rubs her back.
From the hall Cinder smiles at them then quickly starts texting on her phone walking back into the living room.
It's late at night. Ember is now in her room having a video chat on her phone with Wade. "We worked things out and my dad is okay with me starting my new life at the glass internship with you."
Wade can be heard over the phone. "Really? That's great. I'm so glad things are working out. I was beginning to worry I was causing too much trouble."
"You? Trouble? Never. Besides you are totally worth it."
Wade blushes and smiles.
Ember gets a little bashful, "It's getting late. We better get some sleep. I love you Wade."
"I love you too Em. Good night, sweet dreams."
As they hang up Ember thinks to herself another pet name Wade slips out but she loves it. Now she has to come up with some of her own. She falls asleep dreaming about it.
Author's Note: I wanted to write Wade and Bernie getting into to this huge fight. Conflict is fun. I love that Cinder and Brooke are friends and we get to see them together next chapter. I wonder who else will be seeing together? XD

The months in Between chapter 7
CHAPTER 7
It's mid afternoon. Ember leans on the railing of the bridge crossing Mineral Lake. She is right above the spot where Wade and her first touched. Ember looks tired and worn out but not from the welding work but the emotional drain of dealing with the phone call she had with her Àshfá. She looks out of place too with her water proof suit on. It's black with yellow reflective strips on it and a size too big on her too. She spots an air couple from across the lake flirting with each other and she smiles. Being with Wade soon is going make her day but is also dreading dealing with her father shortly after. That can wait though because she spots her Water guy and she can't help but glow at him.
Wade runs up, "Ember hi! Sorry to keep you waiting." As he hugs her he asks. "Wow is that the new suit you were telling me about?"
Ember sounding a bit off goes, "Yeah, it's the most unflattering thing I've ever worn but it does a good job keeping the waterfall off me." Ember looking down at herself holds up her arms as the sleeves droop nearly over her hands.
Wade then says softly almost to were Ember can't hear, "Nah, I think you look sexy in whatever you wear."
Ember wasn't sure if that's what she heard and quickly looks at him with a bright yellow face, "What?"
Wade now realizing what he just said out loud goes, "What?" Then panics, desperately tiring to change the subject. "Hey I wanted to pitch you something?" He then clears his throat and looks down at his hands fiddling with the hem of his shirt like he did when he asked her out. "It's about a weekend coming up in about three weeks. My mom is going out of town and-"
"Hello Wade!" River interrupts.
"River? What are you doing here?" Wade questions.
River shrugs her shoulders and lies, "Just passing by and happened to spot you here."
Ember looks at River then looks at Wade. What she sees is a very attached Water girl around their age and her boyfriend clearly not happy to see her. Ember was already having a bad day and is not interested in it becoming worse. Ember tings a bit purple and then tells River. "Excuse me but we were in the middle of a conversation." Wade reads that Ember is sticking up for him and goes to cross his arms in front of him with a "yeah" look on his face.
"Oh my apologies. I'm River, Wade's ex, and his new trainee for city inspector." She says with a smug look on her face. Wade just face palms, this was not how he wanted Ember to find out.
Surprisingly Ember's purple fades. All thanks to the knowledge of the back story Wade has told her. She has confidence that this clearly wasn't Wade's idea and that he is unfortunately somehow stuck with this. The last thing that she wants to do is make him feel worse. He's had enough of that from her figuring out what she wanted for her life. Time to shine bright for him.
Ember confidently steps up to River with her hand held out. "Oh, I'm Ember, Wade's girlfriend, you're really lucky to be working with an inspector as amazing as him." River back off a bit and puts her hands up not wanting to touch Fire. Ember realizing she coming on a bit strong pulls her hands back down to behind her. "I'm sorry. Water doesn't bother me as you can tell. You sure you're going to okay working in Firetown? We Firish do run a bit hot." Wade is beaming a huge smile at Ember.
River nervously steps back, "I just remember something I got to do, see you tomorrow Wade." River then turns to power walk away, trying to hide her fear.
Wade turns to Ember, "That was amazing. I've never seen River get that uncomfortable before." Wade then notices Ember turning purple again. Misreading the situation he then says. "And I'm sorry you found out my bad news this way. I tried talking to Gale but-"
Ember interrupts him, "That's not what I'm mad about." She leans over the railing looking down at her reflection on the lake, still purple.
Wade is confuse. If she's not mad about River then what is she mad about? He cautiously walks up to her and puts his hand gently on her shoulder. As he does her purple fades and she shrinks to red as she exhales out. Wade is trying to read her face but she just looks sadly at her reflection. He tells her softly, "I'm here for you. You know that right? Whatever it is."
Ember just takes a deep breathe out again and puts her hand on top of his. The one on her shoulder. She rubs her thumb across the back of his hand and thinks he's so good to her.
Wade smiles at her touch, "What is it that you're not ready to hear?"
Ember sightly chokes on her words, "That some people don't accept our relationship."
Wade reassures her. "I don't care about with other Elements think of us. What matters is the Elements in our lives closest to us like our family. Right?"
Ember slides off the railing into Wade's arms. He easily returns the embrace.
Wade then speaks his mind, "I love you Ember and no one, not the whole world, can change my mind."
She hugs him tighter and as she does Wade can see her beautiful light glowing. Knowing everything is going to be okay. She looks up at him and they kiss right over the spot where they first touched. What a precious memory.
Ember then speaks, "Let's go back to your place so I can get changed and if it's ok with you can I stay over?"
Wade smiles and hugs her tight, "Of course you can." She can tell him what's wrong when she is ready, they now have all night.
Wade and Ember are relaxing on the couch in the living room before their dinner date. Brooke and Lake aren't home yet so it's just the two of them. Wade gave her her space to get changed in his room. He now has his arm over his girlfriend while her head rests on his shoulder. He smiles at the thought of what Ember said to River about her being so lucky. He has never been so turned on. Wordless they turn to each other then start making out. Wade puts his hand on her back then slowly lowers to her hip. He stops his hand there and begins to shake.
As Ember put her lips on his she thinks how much she needed this. She loves the feeling of his touch but why is he shaking? Is she too hot? Are they moving too fast? Does he not like her this way? Like Water maybe? She pulls back slightly, "You okay?"
Wade's voice squeaks from his nerves, "Yeah I'm fine." But then he loses control of his thought bubbles.
Ember finally puts two and two together about thought bubbles. She pulls back more to ask, "Wait, what are you thinking about?"
Wade is badly lying and it's not like him but he really doesn't want to make Ember uncomfortable, "What do you mean?" Too late.
Ember backs off some more, turns purple, and let's Wade have it. "Look, something is on you're mind that you aren't telling me." She puts her arms out as her purple flame grows bigger "Whatever happened to saying what you feel?" She shrinks back down and looks down sad at the last part of her rant. "Or not keeping secrets from each other."
Wade puts his hands up when Ember turns purple but she is not burning him. He knows he's screwed up and has to come clean. He's just very scared to say it. When she shrinks though it darn near breaks his heart. "No! That's not it... It's just..."
Ember asks softly feeling a bit uncomfortable and concerned she did something wrong, "Just what?"
A extremely nervous Wade comes clean with his eyes tightly closed and blush to his face he finally asks. "Do you ever think about taking things further?" He opens one eye to see a bright yellow and shocked Ember.
Ember relaxes and begins to laugh. She drops her head to his chest. "Oh Wade. I was beginning to worry you didn't like me in that way."
Wade is horrified looking down at Ember on his chest. "WHAT?! I am so sorry I gave you that impression! That was total not my intent!"
Ember still laughing hard rolls back on the couch. "That's what your thought bubbles have been about this whole time?"
Wade is a bit embarrassed but mostly relieved as he laughs with her. He grabs her hands as she rolls back up forward to him. "I was scared to push it. The last thing I want is to make you feel uncomfortable."
Ember jokes but Wade takes it seriously and tears up, "Well you working with you ex isn't helping with that."
Wade in a high pitch voice goes, "I know! I tired telling Gale." He groans in frustration and puts his hands in his face.
Ember laughs and reassures him. "Relax I'm joking. I've never seen you so tense."
Wade grabs her into a hug. "I love you Ember and I don't want to screw this up."
Now it's Ember's turn to feel like her heart is breaking. She had no idea he was putting that much pressure on himself. She hugs him back tighter wordlessly telling him it's going to be okay. The moment is cut short because Brooke has come home.
"Hey you two! How was your day?" Brooke bubbled.
"Fine Mrs. Ripple how was yours?"
Brooke responds cheerfully, "Wonderful and I got some news about the charity event. It's two weeks from now at 7pm."
Ember excited "Great! I'll get the word out in Firetown. My mom is super excited already."
Wade interrupts, "Well we better head out for our date soon."
"Aww with Jimmy and Wendy? They're such a cute pair. You're going to love them Ember."
As Ember walks with Wade to the elevator she asks. "So who are Jimmy and Wendy?"
"They're some of my coworkers down at City Hall and they are kind of like us."
"Us?"
Wade continues as they step in the elevator. "Yeah my buddy Jimmy is Water and Wendy his fiancé is Earth. I figure it would be nice to spend time with another mixed Element couple. We could support each other you know?"
Ember thinks to herself wow Wade really loves connecting with others. He is starting to sound like he'd make a great councilor or therapist. Wonder if Wade has ever thought of that too? She'll get back to talking to him about that later because another more important thought popped back up. Ember interlocks her hand with his. Her beautiful light glows as she tells him. "You're not going to screw this up Wade. If anything I'm worried I'd be the one to do that."
Wade disagrees, "No way you can do that." He squeezes her hand a bit tighter then goes. "Maybe we are putting too much pressure on ourselves and we should remember to start small." They smile at each other as they step off the elevator.
Jimmy and Wendy are holding hands. They spot Wade and Ember in the front of the restaurant and wave to them. Jimmy is shorter and thinner then Wade. Wendy is a cute little Earth girl with a rose bush as her hair. She is not scared of Ember's fire and is in fact excited to meet her. The four of them have a great time together.
Back at Wade's place. Wade steps out of his room in just some pajama bottoms on and hands his shirt to Ember. She takes it and closes the door to his room as he waits outside. Lake in their pajamas walks by and the two siblings wordlessly have a moment. Wade gives Lake an unamused look. Lake holding in a laugh with raises eyebrows, shakes their head, and walks away. Ember opens the door to let Wade in. His shirt nearly falls off her but its more comfortable then sleeping in her chainlink skirt. Wade is trying not to think about that shirt nearly falling off. Ember notices this and sneakers at him. Wade with a goofy smile just shrugs then relaxes. It's nice to see him no longer tense about these things. They lay in bed together and since the rest of the house is tiring to sleep they whisper to each other.
"So is the reason you're spending the night here have anything to do with your dad?" Wade quietly asks as he puts his arm around her. Ember's face says it all and Wade goes "Thought so. Is there anything I can do?"
Ember whispers to Wade, "I told him about us moving in together at the wrong time and he blew up at me over the phone."
Wade looks up at the ceiling, "Ohhhh." He then thinks aloud, "I wonder what I can do to help him trust me more?"
Ember shakes her head. "Wade that's not the problem." Ember has a hard time saying the next part, "He's... not trusting of..."
Wade finishes, "Water?"
Ember tires to help Wade understand, "When my parents first came to Element City they weren't treated well by other Elements. No one wanted Fire around. My mom pregnant with me was almost put out by a Water person on the Wetro. And you know the Garden Central Station story. This isn't something that you did. It's just hard for him to let go of those past traumas. I just got to give it time."
Wade rubs her shoulder as she is talking. He's thinking but all him can come up with is as long as he shows his love for Ember the more her dad might start to trust him more. Ember is right, give it time.
Ember remembers something then asks Wade. "Hey what was is you were trying to ask me on the bridge today?"
Wade turns to look her in the eye, "Well, My mom is going on business trip and is taking Lake with her. So we have the whole apartment to ourselves for a weekend. Just the two of us if you'd like to stay with me." Wade smiles lovingly at Ember. He isn't afraid of weirding her out anymore and won't be offended if she says no. Though it would be nice if she says yes.
Ember puts her head down on his chest so he can't read her smiling face, "That sounds nice." She says with her beautiful light glowing.
Wade hugs her back, kisses her forehead with a smile. "So it's date?"
Author's Note: I had a lot of fun writing these "wordless interactions". XD

The Months in Between Chapter 6
CHAPTER 6
It's late afternoon at Wade's mom's apartment. Wade is outside on the balcony talking to his older brother Allen while Eddy and Brooke are working on game day treats in the kitchen. Lake is playing with Marco and Polo in the living room. Wade is trying to get relationship advice from Allen.
Wade starts, "Thanks again for helping me out with the ring fund."
"Hey no sweat. You can watch the kiddos anytime. I love getting more date nights with Eddy." Allen takes a chug of a beverage from a glass bottle.
Wade then nervously asks, "Hey speaking of which, I could use your help with something." Allen raises an eyebrow but let's Wade continue. "Kind of feel weird asking my bro this but since Dad isn't here and Mom is well..." Just then you can hear loud sounds from Brooke and Eddy in the kitchen either laugh or crying at something they said. Probably both. "...Well Mom... I could use some advice. Like adult advice."
Curious, Allen laughs. "Oh this ought to be good. Ask away."
Wade shyly continues, "Well, it started at the pharmacy..." Flash back a Water Pharmacist is laughing at Wade. "... then my doctor's office..." Flash back to the doctor's office. The Receptionist, Nurse, and Doctor, all Water, are pointing and laughing at Wade. "... And even tried a Herbologist." Flash back to an old hippy looking overgrown weed of a Earth dude just slowly shaking his head at Wade. "No one will help me find it."
"Find what?"
Wade looks down and nervously rubs the back of his head he answers, "Fire... proof... protection."
Allen laughs at his younger brother hard. Like when he told Ember the sponge story.
Wade is not amused and grumbles to himself, "Agh, I knew this would happen."
Allen catches his breathe, "Ha ha, I knew you and Ember have been heating up but don't you think you two are moving too fast? Like I get the ring thing takes months but this?"
Wade reassures his brother, "Actually the subject hasn't come up yet and I'm just thinking of the future. I want to be ready and take responsibility for making her feel comfortable with me if this does happen." Wade nervously plays with his hands.
"Brother, you will never be ready, trust me. Have you tried looking in Firetown? Also isn't this like a no no before marriage in Firish culture?
Wade freaks, "No way am I going to search in Firetown. Ember'a dad, Bernie, he knows everyone there. He told me himself. He'd boil me alive if he ever found out about this. And no. I don't know if it's wait till marriage thing. If it is I'm fine though I'm totally with that." Wade has a dreamy smile on his face thinking about Ember.
Allen teases, "Whoa look at you all grown up." He puts his arm around Wade and gives him a noogie.
"HEY!" Wade laughs.
Allen stops with the noogie but keeps his arm around his brother. "Nice to see you thinking of the future Bro." Allen then comes up with an idea. "You know, Ember is probably the solution to your problem. After all Eddy is the one who uses protection with us." Then winks at Wade.
Wade sighs, "Okay I'll ask her when the time is right. I also got to tell her I ran into River today.
Allen taking a sip of his drink almost chokes on it and spits it out."Cough, cough. Don't tell Ember about her."
"Actually I already told her the party story because I don't want to keep big secrets from her."
Allen puts his face down on his hand, "That was not a good idea but I guess if she took it well."
Just then a yellow glow can be seen across Wade's face. Wade turns to see Ember in the kitchen with the Brooke and Eddy. He can't contain his excitement. He goes in to greet her.
Allen shakes his head and takes a sip of his drink, "Hopeless lover boy."
Wade runs up to Ember in the kitchen, picks her up, and twirls her around. She laughs at him. "I'm excited to see you too." Ember tells him. As he gently puts her down then they give each other a kiss. Eddy and Brooke go aww.
Wade gives Ember a loving look but then snaps back to reality and tells her the bad news. "The weirdest thing happened to me today." He start to rub the back of his neck and breaks eye contact with her. "I uhh, ran into my ex while at work. Just for a brief moment." At this time most of the Ripples minus the kids were all eavesdropping.
Ember quickly responds, "Oh Wade that's okay. No need to tell me."
Wade asks unsure, "Yeah?"
Ember then continues, "Wade, if I told you about all the exes I run into I'd be messaging you daily because they are mostly regulars at the Shop."
Wade looks slightly confuse then concerned, "Oh? Ohhh."
Ember laughs at him. Seeing that he thinks there is competition but there's actually none. "They come in with their kids or wives most of the time. Don't sweat it. But I do appreciate you telling me though." Ember turns toward Brooke. "Is there anything I can help with?"
Brooke gets teary eye at Ember wanting to be a good guest, "No sweetheart you go relax in the living room, I think the pregame is just about to start."
Wade offers his arm and Ember takes it. Off to the living room they go.
Ember cuddles with Wade on back couch in the family TV room. Wade isn't really watch the game much as he normally would do. He is just enjoying this time with his girlfriend. The rest of the family is sitting up front intensity watching the game. Ember starts to nod off on Wade's shoulder. The whole family cheers at a point made. Allen goes to Wade, "Bro, did you see that? That was epic!" Brooke gets up to head to kitchen to get more snacks for the family.
Wade lies and responds, "Huh? Yeah that was cool." Wade notices Ember trying to be attentive to game even though she is very tired. She props her head up to smile at the screen. Ember doesn't notice but Wade gets a thought bubble. He's too nervous to say what he thinking and hesitates a second. He opens his mouth to ask Ember a question but Brooke walking back in, beats him too it.
Brooke says to Ember, "Aww you're more then welcome to spend the night here dear. That way you get more sleep for work tomorrow." Brooke then winks at Wade.
Ember is glowing a bright yellow but not enough light to block the family's view of the TV. Wade is shocked at his mom and gives her a "what the hell?" look. He hides it though as soon as Ember turns to look at him. He can't stay silent now and starts to ramble like he did when he mess up calling Ember hot. Pleading this case. "Yeah.. and I can take you to work in the morning. The train ride is shorter from here then Firetown." Next part he says a little softer. "And.. and I promise nothing weird because I.. I can sleep on the couch." He ends his rant with a nervous smile.
Ember looks down and says only to Wade, "I don't know what my parents will think of this idea?"
Brooke over hearing says, "Oh your mother is fine with it. I looped her in with a text while I was in the kitchen. She agrees you need the best rest."
"Wait you've been speaking with my mother? For how long?"
Wade is also confused and gives Ember a it wasn't me shrug.
Brooke responds, "Oh I've been talking with Cinder since shortly after the flood, Mother bonds are universal, and she is my new best friend." Eddy gives Brooke a high five to mother's bonds are universal. "So don't worry dear she is fine with it."
Ember checks her phone to see a thumbs up message from her mom.
Wade and Ember look at each other surprised then Wade softens a bit. "Up to you. I can still walk you to the wetro station later too."
Ember whispers to Wade, "I'm really not introducing?"
The whole family goes, "NO!" And the never leave their eyes off the game too.
Ember exhales a sigh, "Well that will help me rest a bit more." She curls up back with Wade and says to him, "Thank you."
Wade smiles putting his arm around her. "Any time."
An hour and half later the game is over and Ember has been fast asleep on Wade. Wade's been enjoying even minute of it. Even though they've well established that their chemistry is in sync, he is still in aww that this was happening. That his water was giving her comfort enough for her to stay asleep. That her fire hasn't made him feel too hot. It just feels perfect. Admittedly he can't wait to feel what it would be like to have a whole night like this and with even less in between them. Wade rubs his head again at the intruding thought bubbles. They are getting worse. He knows he needs to talk to Ember about them eventually. Maybe she feels the same way? Wade slowly picks her up in his arms off the couch. As he does she rolls her head on his chest and subconsciously lays her hand over his heart. Wade is trying so hard not to cry at this cuteness overload he's experiencing. Brooke looks at the scene and is too trying not to cry.
Brooke says softly "Aww poor thing I hope she's not overworking herself."
Wade goes to his mom, "SHHH." He looks over and is relieved to see Ember still fast asleep.
Wade carefully walks past her to go upstairs to his room, Brooke continues quietly, "Then again I worked that hard when I was her age."
Wade gently lays Ember in the river rock bed. He then slowly pulls a blanket up over her. The blanket looks like one of those emergency foil space blankets but it has a soft matted texture to it. Very comforting. He was testing it out because it was one of the only blankets he could find that was both water and fire proof. So far he likes it and he hopes Ember finds is comfortable too. He gives Ember a soft kiss on the head. As he turns to walk out he feels like his shirt is caught on something.
Ember subconsciously has a hold of Wade's shirt. Wade starts to sweat a bit not knowing what to do. He obviously does not want to wake her. He decides to just lay down next to her and wait for her to let go. He stays above the covers because he promised nothing weird, even though this is weird, or not? His mind quiets down when he feels Ember roll her head on his chest and stays there. Wade just relaxes and lays his head on top of hers. Regardless of traditions, boundaries, promises, whatever this right here doesn't feel wrong at all. He wants her to feel this safe around him, always. Wade looses track of time and falls asleep right next to Ember.
The sounds of an alarm clock wakes Ember up. Wade reaches his hand over to turn it off and looks back to Ember trying to read her thoughts. Wade pleads his case, again. "I know I said the couch but you wouldn't let go and I really didn't want to wake you up, I'm sor-" He gets interrupted by Ember giving him a kiss.
Ember laughs, "Good morning I love you too." Ember then looks away bashfully, "Honestly, I didn't want you on the couch anyway."
Wade is surprised but relaxes. Maybe she does feel this growing desire same way as him?
Brooke can be heard yelling from downstairs, "Breakfast is ready!"
"I got to take a quick shower, don't wait for me, go get yourself some food." Wade then looks at the clock. "You got about an hour before you need to leave for your shift."
Ember goes, "Wow that much time? Yawn, I'm glad I stayed. I feel so rested."
Wade goes softly, "Yeah me too. Well you better got get breakfast."
Ember yawns again, "Okay."
Ember walks down stairs toward the kitchen. She then realizes she's never had Water breakfast before. Wonder if it will fuel her like a fire- then she smells it. A pot of Lava Java.
Ember is so excited, "Mrs. Ripple thank you so much. You're really making me feel at home." Ember's smile fades as she makes eye contact with Brooke. Brooke is about to have a crying fit. She whales and Ember just stairs. She really needs to watch what she says around the Ripples. They get too emotional.
Lake walks in and sits downs next to Ember. "Don't worry my mom is fine, you'll get used to it."
"I guess I'll watch what I say?"
"Nah, just be yourself. You can't stop the water works in this family."
Brooke finally calms down and asks to Ember in a high pitched voice, "Coffee?"
"Thank you."
Brooke is back to normal, hands Ember the mug, "Oh I hope I made it right." Ember smiles at the cup in front of her but then gets an idea spark from Brooke's next words. "I followed your mom's instructions." Ember thinks of a quick flashback to when she saw Wade talking to her mom, getting ideas on what treats she likes.
Ember lights up, "Hey I want to get Wade something." Brooke and Lake look at her. "But I have no clue what to get him."
Lake asks, "Why?"
Ember continues, "Your brother has been so sweet to me. Meeting me at my job for lunch almost every day. Making sure I get home okay after he's been all over the city. He even made a date with just my favorite snacks on the roof top of the Shop."
Brooke reminiscing, "Aww I remember when Dewey and I would have little moments like that while we working hard on our careers."
Ember then thinks aloud, "Careers? Does Wade like this job?"
Lake goes, "Oh no he hates it."
Ember is surprised and tells them, "Really? I've been hearing nothing but good things from the folks in Firetown about his work."
Brooke, "Yeah that's because he is basically doing two jobs at once. He's only suppose to report the violations but he can't stand not giving a solution. He connects, loves comforting people, and letting them know it's going to be okay. Then he stays up late coming up with those solutions."
Lake, "Yeah I don't know where he is getting this energy from."
Brooke says, "It's passion for the work, sometimes you won't love it, but the end results can still drive you."
Lake then goes, "It's just nice to see him so focused on one job for once."
Brooke agrees but then points out, "Yeah but he really doesn't need to come up with those solutions."
Ember is sipping at her java thinking about what they are saying. Wade was able to help Ember get the strength to be herself and follow her dreams. She wants to help him do the same. Sounds like he is trying but is in the wrong place. Maybe she can use the welding job to not only cover expenses but help give Wade the time to find his dream?
"Good Morning!" Wade enters.
Lake does their usually, "S'up."
"Good morning dear!" Brooke bubbled.
Wade hugs and kisses Ember's cheek from behind her and asks, "How's the coffee?"
Ember responses with a smile, "It's great." Ember then notices how refreshing her boyfriend smells after a shower and blushes. Oh she could get use to mornings like this as she sips her coffee trying to hide her bashful face. Wade goes and takes a seat next to her.
Brooke then remembers something, "Oh since you're both here I got some news to tell you. A couple of firms got together with the city and they are putting on a charitable ball for the Firetown flood. All of Firetown is invited as guests at the Argentum Aurum Hotel.
Wade goes, "Whoa that's a fancy place."
Brooke says, "The best in the City. I'll let you all know when. They haven't picked a date yet but it's in the next few weeks."
Monday rolls around and Wade is at city hall first thing in the morning. Gale texted him over the weekend that she has a replacement for him to train and to be in her office Monday. Wade walks into Gale's office then gets look of horror on his face from seeing who's also there.
"Wade I'd like you to meet Ms. River Florentine, your replacement you'll be training for the next month." As Gale finishes, River turns around in her chair and does a little wave with her fingers.
Wade takes a deep breath in and out and awkwardly goes, "Okay."
River then tells Gale, "Wade and I go way back." As Wade reluctantly sits down in the other chair. To say his job just got way harder is a understatement but then remembers why he is working so hard. To save up for that ring for his Ember. As he looks down as his hand he thinks to himself that he's not going to quit now.
"Oh you two know each other?" Gale asks. "That's perfect should make the transition even smoother. You two get on it."
River gets up from her chair and says, "Right away."
Wade takes advantage of River walking out to the office and quickly says, "Yeah I'll just be a minute with Gale, wait out here please." And before River turns around to question it Wade closes the door.
Wade turns around and tries to plead with Gale, "River's my ex-girlfriend and I'm really concerned that this could turn into an HR incident."
Gale puts both hands on her desk and leans forward to tell Wade, "Ripple this isn't high school and you have a job to do."
Wade gulps in fear and says, "Yes Ma'am."
"Wow, these are some heavy suits." Ember says to Vinny as she looks at the one piece fire now covered to water proof suits. They look easily +50 pound of material to wear which will make getting around the welding job harder.
Vinny with a quick laugh, "Yep this should get the job done. It's probably going to even out energy wise to wear them but the benefit is..."
"Not getting your flame splashed." Ember finishes.
"Exactly." Vinny says with a smile. Vinny doesn't mind if the work is harder if that means his team is now safer.
Ember with the new suit on and hood over focuses hard on a weld with the other Firish men. The waterfall is running hard right off of their shoulders. It's added weight and pressure for sure but the benefit is, other then not being in fear of getting snuffed out, is that you are closer to the weld you're working on. Some of the Firish men struggle and are clearly uncomfortable because their flame flickers. "I don't think I can ever get used to this!" One of them says. Even though their new suits are now water proof the heat from their bodies are still creating tons of steam and it's getting hard to see. As Ember is focusing, the loud sounds of the water rushing off her back slowly disappear and almost change to the soft sounds of Wade's heart beat. She remembers hearing it their first night together. The steam around her makes her think of them holding hands and how safe that makes her feel. As she begins to relax the fire from her hands gets stronger and she is now clearly out pacing the other Firish men. Her beautiful light glows strong. Vinny from a distance notices this and nods with a smile.
Lunch time finally rolls arounds and Ember removes her hood with a large exhale. She is not as tired as she was when she started this job. Her endurance is stronger. She checks her phone for messages and sees one from her dad. She gives him a call.
"Hi Àshfá, how are things going at the Shop?" She asks knowing today is the reopening since the flood.
Bernie all excited goes "All is good but it so weird to take a step back and supervise. There is so much help here. Everyone is happy to see the Fireplace open. It really warms my heart to see our community being served the comforts from Fire Land imports again."
"That's so great to hear Àshfá." Ember is so happy for her father and for him to not be over working himself anymore. He is so close to retirement and this couldn't be anymore perfect.
"Also the motorbike is now repair so you won't have to stay at Water's anymore." Bernie innocently slipped by saying water and not Wade but it did not leave a great impression on Ember.
"Well what if I like staying at Wade's?" Ember then reasons with her father and accidentally slips. "It's a shorter commute and we're going to be moving in together at the internship anyways." Ember quickly realized what she did and puts her hand over her mouth in horror.
Bernie standing there in middle of the busy shop is wide eyed in shock. His angry creeps up and he starts to yell over the phone, "WHAT!? WE NEVER TALKED ABOUT THIS?!? THERE IS NO WAY THAT'S HAPPENING!!!
Ember on the other end of the phone is clearly hurt but her purple flame starts to form. Not wanting to cause a scene at work she sternly says to her father, "I got to get back to work." Then hangs up. She is still purple but it fades a bit as she tires to hold back tears.
Bernie on the other end of the phone suddenly relaxes his angry and quickly starts looking regretful as he slowly looks down at his phone. Cinder walks up to her husband and takes his arm to comfort him. Bernie looking down sadly tells her, "Change is hard."
Cinder assures him, "I know Bernie but you two will get through this. I've been talking with Mrs. Ripple and Wade seem like a fine gentleman for..."
Bernie finished "For Water. They want to move in together at the internship. This just isn't the Firish way."
Cinder then goes, "Remember, we are not in Fire Land. I don't want to see our daughter alone in a new city without her true love with her. The more I see them together the more I'm starting to trust Wade as well as Ember."
"Hmm." Bernie still looking down crosses his arms and is deep in thought. He is very hard to convince.
Back to Ember. She hears a chime on her phone and reluctantly checks it. She is relieved see that it is a text from her love.
It reads, "Hey do you want to have dinner with my buddy Jimmy and his Fiancé Wendy tonight? We can meet at my place after work and I'll take you home to Firetown that evening? I also have some news for you but I want to tell you in person."
Ember texts back, "Sure, but let's meet at Mineral Lake after work first. I love you."
Wade reads the text and immediately feels like something is off but he'll just ask her when he sees her this afternoon. There is another chime on Wade's phone. His eyes widen and as he reads the new text. He then gets a dreamy look on his face as more thought bubbles pop on his head.
The text is from his mom and it reads, "Hi Hun! Mark in your calendar I'm going on a business trip next month for a long weekend and taking Lake with me. So you'll have the whole house to yourself for a few days. Love you!"
Author's Note: Argentum Aurum is latin for silver and gold. It's so obvious how Wade feels about Ember that I forget that Ember is just as crazy about him so I wanted to try to write that in just a bit. Seeing as they are both in their mid twenties this is the time we learn how hard work and adulting can be. It's also a time when you start learning how to prioritize bigger goals and dreams for the future.

Oooo you know I was going to do some fan art this morning after the Mufasa trailer dropped!! Did this in pens and color pencil with a classic old school 90's feel.
The Lion King is my favorite movie and to have a new story come out is so excited to me!!! I'm going to review this first trailer.
First off one of the scenes I loved about the 2019 Lion King was Simba's mane in the wind. It really showed the spiritual side of the Circle of Life. Like there is some greater power at play. I get a big sent of that in Mufasa.
Second, if the music is anything like the trailer then I'm not worried about Lin-Manuel Miranda messing this up. Plus he did work with Elton John, Tim Rice, and it wouldn't be The Lion King without Lebo M. So I think we're in good hands.
Third, I love the flash back scene of the Battle of Pride rock. Clearly Timon and Pumbaa are fibbing to Kiara about them fighting Scar. I can't wait to see that!
Overall I'm excited. I loved The Lion King 2019 and the Broadway. I can't wait for more!!!

Thank you @fanreadermx and everyone who got me to 5 reblogs!
The Month In Between chapter 5
CHAPTER 5
Two weeks has past and Firetown's repairs are moving quickly. Wade and Ember have been working really hard at their jobs but haven't been seeing each other as much as they would like. They try to at least grab lunch or dinner together when then can but Ember's new welding job leaves her very exhausted. Bernie has even caught her falling asleep rebuilding some shelves at the Shop. There's been no time for dates.
Wade has been going above and beyond on his inspector job. He is only responsible for pointing out the violations that need to be fixed. He instead takes time in his reporting. Giving the knowledge he's been learning from his mom, he writes individualize action plans to get the building up to code, and on budget. It's extra long hours on his laptop at night but to him it's well worth it. Wade hates giving building owners the bad news and not being able to offer a solution. Which is why he takes in the extra work to help better the community he feels connected to. Gale takes notice of this and has him in her office.
"So Ripple what did you want to meet with me about?" Gale asks.
"Well, I wanted to request a transfer for next quarter to the city Ember's internship is at. That is if I'm doing a good enough job." Wade says without confidence.
Gale then tells Wade, "Kid, I'll be real with you for a second. I only hired you as a favor to your mother and you were this close to be fired. Finding that leak was your last chance."
Wade looks nervous and gulps.
Gale continues, "But then all of a sudden it's like you found your spark. I never seen any inspector be so thorough and have these amazing actions plans for the city repairs. You're on fire kid! You really got a passion for this."
Wade questioning himself says, "Well it's easy when you connect with the people you are trying to help? I just want to help them through it other wise I feel like all I do is give bad news all day."
Gale says, "Well it's working. Your the reason the repairs are going fast in Firetown. Keep up that attention to detail. In the mean time I'll look for your replacement and you are going to train them to be exactly as you are now. I'd hate to loose ya but I get that that Fireball of yours is cute." Gale does a wink.
Wade with a smile gets up and shakes Gale hand. "Thank you Ms. Cumulus. I won't let you down!"
Wade gets back to work in Firetown but then heads to an outdoor mall on his lunch break. He had to white lie to Ember about having the work through lunch but this secret isn't harmful. Wade stands outside a jewelry store. He takes a confident deep breath as he steps in. Wade looks over at a Water couple around his age being helped by a salesman. They are picking out matching wedding rings and they look very happy together. A Water salesman steps up to help Wade.
Salesman, "Hello sir is there anything I can help you find?"
Wade gets excited and rambles, "Yeah hi, I'm shopping around for an engagement ring but my relationship is still new but amazing. I really just need a better idea for what to budget for the next few months before we move in together."
Salesman, "Great. You came to the right place. Let me show you some styles and do you happen to know her ring size?"
"Actually no." Wade holds his hand to look at it.
"No problem I got a chart you could look at." The Salesman holds up sizing chart.
Wade points over the a very small size but then again Embers digits are very thin. "She's around this size."
"Oh, that's pretty small for Water." Says the Salesman.
Wade was taken back by surprise. He never really thought about how strangers view his relationship with an Element not of his own because frankly he doesn't care. Now it's time to test if he is in the right place.
Wade then goes, "Oh yeah I forgot to mention she's Firish can you should me your selection of fireproof rings please?" Then Wade gives the salesman a look of I dare you to say something Elementalist.
The Salesman looks surprised for a second then gets back to his job, "Of course they are right over here, My mistake I should of ask you first."
Wade is relieved and laughs it off, "Haha, not a problem."
After some time, Wade steps out of the jewelry store. He looks up and does a dreamy sigh but then a young woman's voice breaks his good mood.
"Wade Ripple? Is that you?" Asks a very attractive Water girl his age.
Wade has a look of horror on his face but quickly changes it to not be suspicious. He then fake smiles and says, "River. Hi, crazy seeing you again." Wade doesn't have a mean bone in his body as awkward as this, is he's a nice guy.
River runs up and hugs Wade. Wade clearly not wanting to hug back gives her a small pat on the back.
"Wow it's been what almost a decade? You've really grown up." River then notices his name tag and flirtatiously goes, "And a city inspector now?"
Wade takes a few steps back as soon as River lets go of him. Wade looks like he's partially melting, his hair slopped down, he's sweating, and runs his hand on the back of his neck. "Yeah.."
Lucky for Wade. The Salesman interrupts, holding a piece of paper. "Sir you forgot to grab the estimate for your engagement ring."
Wade turns to the Salesman completely forgetting River is there. "Oh thank you." Wade looks down at the paper and smiles. It's like his watery waves on his head have come back to life and he stands proud.
River is staring at him in shock then goes coyly, "Wow Wade sounds serious. Does she know about me?"
Wade doesn't make eye contact with her as he folds up the paper and puts it in his bag. "Actually yeah she knows and it's very serious." He makes eye contact with River when he says serious.
River chuckles at Wade, "Well it's good to see you again Wade. Tell your mom I said hi." And with that she structs away.
Wade immediately turns the opposite direction and says to himself, "Pfft, yeah my Mom never liked you." When he is far enough away he pulls out the estimate. Wade takes a breathe in, does a dreamy sigh out feeling confident. "I got a lot of saving up to do."
Nearing the end of day at the job site, a worker in a suit passes out paychecks in envelops and hands Ember hers. Ember almost forgets she is getting pay for this work, "Oh thank you." She opens it and is shocked by the amount.
Next scene is Vinny with the check in his face and just laughs at Ember's surprise. "Ha, yep that is what an apprentice welder makes plus you've been making killer OT on the weekends."
Ember pulls the check down and stares at it for a second, "Dang!" She then paces and rambles, "This? This is so much! I mean my glass internship coming up is paid too but this welding job isn't just taking care of my travel costs." Then is dawns on her. "It will cover all my living expenses while I'm there."
Vinny goes with his arms held up, "Well what an amazing opportunity you have and the experience you're gaining from welding is going to help you prefect your glass making. Especially if it tempered."
Ember gets a bit honest with her boss, "Well it's exhausting work though not gonna lie."
Vinny isn't insulted by it and puts his hands down. "I know that waterfall hasn't been easy. I'm lucky I've been tolerating it as well as I have. I have a team working on converting some fire proof suits to water proof. Water guy actually came up with the idea."
"That's great and about time." Ember then takes a moment and ask Vinny, "Hey can I ask you something personal?"
"Sure kid." Vinny genuinely not fazed and is actually expected what she is about to ask him.
Ember is a bit nervous and she holds her arms to her sides close. Worried her question might be insulting but she goes for it anyway. Rambles a bit too. "Well it's about your parents, I'm in a mixed Element relationship and me and my parents had no idea that that was even possible." Ember nervously flared up a bit with her hands up, "Not that we're prejudice towards other Elements being together we just simply didn't know. Wade and I just kind of happened." Ember smiles at thinking of Wade.
Vinny give a warm smile and laughs, "Yeah you and Wade remind me a lot of my folks. My mother is Firish and dad is rock hard stubborn. I guess that's why the fell hard for each other."
Ember laughs but let's Vinny continue.
Vinny gets a little serious, "I learned very quickly we were not like most families but we all stuck together. Me and my five other siblings."
"Five wow." Ember thinking that's a lot of kids.
Vinny laughs then continues, "Ha ha yeah but we all love and support each other. That has been the biggest lesson growing up as a mixed Element is how to love yourself and each other. Love is alway worth it."
Ember smiles and goes, "Yeah I know. Thank you for telling me."
Back at the shop now. Ember is helping her father finish stocking shelves for the reopening tomorrow. Flarrietta, Flarry, Cinder, and Clod are working too. As they are working Ember has just told Bernie about her first pay check.
"Whoa! That's a lot of money! Maybe I should of become a welder?"
Flarrietta chimes in, "Are you kidding Bernie? You were made to create this shop."
Flarry says, "It's the gem to our Firetown."
Ember agrees, "Yeah Àshfá."
Cinder goes up to her husband, "You really got a strong heart for this and I wouldn't of had it any other way. Besides doing any repair work always brought out your temper. You hate it and you know it."
Bernie puts his arm around his wife, "Ahh you're right. Serving the community did bring me such happiness. Speaking of happy how are things with you and Wade Ember?"
Ember leans back on a self and has a dreamy look on her face. "Oh Àshfá, he's wonderful stopping by the job site when he can for us to have lunch together. But we haven't gone on a real date in a while because we are both so busy with work."
Flarrietta chimes in again, in support of Ember. "I keep hearing stories about how he has been going door to door in Firetown teaching everyone how to keep water out. Even helping create plains for the repairs of each building. He's the nicest Water guy ever, very polite, and respectful too."
Clod adds, "He gives me water when I'm thirsty since the pipes here don't have water in them anymore."
Ember smiles warmly as her father goes, "Okay okay, I'm warming up to the water guy."
Ember sincerely tells her father, "Thank you Àshfá. You have no idea what that means to me."
Bernie's expression gets a little serious as they walk over to the back, "Hmm, I just wish you guys happiness but I know there will be judgements from others. I wish I knew more on how to protect you from that."
Ember tells her father, "Well, I started talking to Vinny about that, he's one of six kids."
Bernie surprise, "Six?"
Ember laughs then looks at the clock. "Oh, I better get going to Element City."
"Oh?"
Ember forgot to tell her parents, "Yeah Wade invited me over to watch a big Windbreakers game."
Bernie confused, "Wind what? Game?"
"Glad the Wetro is up and running again but the motorbike would of been a shorter commute." Ember turns and gives her dad a hug. "I'll be back home later on tonight."

The Months in Between chapter 4
Outside the Ripple's residence. Brooke opens the door just as enthusiastically as she did the first time she met Ember, "OH Ember! It's so good to see you again!"
"Hello Mrs. Ripple, it's great to see you too." Ember can't help but smiles at how warm Wade's mom is.
"Come inside dear." Brooke steps out of the way the let Ember in. Being careful not to touch her as much as she would like to give her a hug.
As Ember steps in she notices that the water level in their home is now lower. She can get around without using the floating chair like the first time. Ember feeling guilty immediately turns back to Brooke. "Oh Mrs. Ripple, you didn't have to change the water level. This is your home."
Brooke just smiles at her, "Oh nonsense, you're practically family Ember and I want to make sure you feel comfortable. That's what I want in my home."
"Thank you." Ember can't help but think would her parents have water in their home for Wade to feel comfortable? She can't see her father watering down their home for anyone.
Brooke's words then breaks Ember's thoughts, "Wade is upsides in his room. He told me he had a lot of paper work he still needed to finish up. Why don't you rest up after your first day. Dinner is in a hour."
Ember steps up to the doorway to Wade's room. He is at a desk, glued to his laptop typing away but that familiar light catches his eye. He turns his head to see. "Ember!" Wade runs up to her to give her a quick hug and kiss. He then motions her to go relax on his bed. "Relax, make yourself at home. Sorry I have some paperwork to finish up but I should be done soon."
"No worries." She then notices Wade's bed is not a water bed like she imagined but more of a dried up river bed full of smooth, round rocks, and pebbles. Ember chuckles, "I honestly thought you slept on a bed made of water."
"No, are you kidding? I jiggle around all day long as it is. At night I need some stability to fall asleep. I'm guessing it's kind of the same as the briquettes on your grill bed. Keeping your fire hot while you sleep."
Ember goes to lay down on one side of the river rocks. It's cold at first but then the rocks start reflecting back her heat from her fire. She closes her eyes and relaxes. As she does she is unaware that she is casting her beautiful light. "Huh, it's feels nice."
Wade spots her light and looks over his shoulder to Ember relaxing on his bed. He looks nervous and starts to sweat. Ember is on HIS bed. He starts to get thought bubbles but then scratches his head frantically. He turns back around to his laptop trying to distract himself. Ember doesn't notice this at all. She notices something else though then quickly opens her eyes with a gasp.
"OH NO!" she cries.
Wade turns around quickly like he hasn't been watching Ember on his bed, "Wha, ahem, What's wrong?"
Ember has stood up from the side of the bed she was laying on. Clutching her arms to her chest and looking down. "I ruined your bed." she says quietly. She has unintentionally melted the smaller pebbles and sand with her fire into glass. The bigger river rocks look smoother too. Ember is so embarrassed that she just wants to crawl under that bed and hide there.
Wade looks at his half melted bed and gets up to go lay on that side. Wade is laying face up on the glass part of his bed and his eyes start to widen. Wade quietly, "Oh my God." Ember peaks over Wade to try to read if he's mad. Ember is nearly in tears but then Wade grabs her to pulls her onto the bed with him. All excited he says, "It feels better then before! Can you melt the other side too please?"
Ember laughs away the massive ball of stress she was just holding on to. Wade laughs with her. The pair catches their breath from their laughing fit only to realize they are inches away from each other. Wade slowly reaches his hand up to cup Ember's face. Ember starts to noticed Wade has small thought bubbles as he slowly inches toward her lips. She is about to say something about them but then.
"Agh, close the door first." Says Lake.
Ember's second time jumping off of Wade like her life depended on it. Wade gets up quickly too. Ember embarrassed goes, "Sorry."
Wade is way more annoyed than Ember and yells, "LAKE! NOT COOL!" Wade runs up to the doorway but by this time Lake has already ran off. Wade turns back to Ember, "Sorry about that."
Ember shrugs her shoulders, "That's what it's like having family so close I guess."
Wade grumbles and Ember hears it, "Yeah and no privacy." He then turns to Ember, "Well now that we've established the fact that you are NOT ruining my bed, go take a nap while I finish up my paperwork."
Ember sighs, "Music to my ears."
Dinner time with Wade, Ember, Lake, and Brooke. Brooke talks as she passes along a casserole. "Ember, I just spoke with my friend this morning and I got some good news and bad news."
Wade and Ember look worried then Wade asks, "What's the bad news?"
Brooke looks a little sad but not teary eyed, "The internship is filled up this quarter."
Ember then asks, "And the good news?"
Brooke getting excited, "You got in next quarter! Which is three months from now."
Ember is relieved, "That's great because that gives me time to help finish up with all the repairs." Wade looks over at her. He is concerned that she might be overworking herself.
Brooke notices her son's concern then tells Ember, "Yeah hun just make sure to take some time for yourself in between."
Ember and Wade are outside on the balcony after dinner. The pair are leaning over the rail looking out at Element City.  It's a clear summer night and the city lights sparkle like diamonds. Ember tells Wade, "Man, it's crazy the amount of opportunities I've been getting. I'm so grateful."
Wade goes, "You're very talented Ember. You so deserve it."
Ember asks, "Hey what the new city like?"
Wade responds as he leans his back on the rail, "I haven't been there since I was a kid. It seemed nice. Not as big as Element City."
Ember then realizes, "I've never been on my own before let alone gone to a new city."
Wade looks at her, clear his throat, puts his arm gently around her, "Well what if we move in together at your internship so you won't have to be alone? I can easily get a transfer at work."
Ember is glowing yellow and nervously spats, "Wow Wade that's, that's a huge step. Not that I'm not happy about it or anything it's.. just..."
Wade sensing her anxiety, "Hey. Hey, it's three months away which is plenty of time to see if we start hating each other."
Ember starts laughing and rests her head on his shoulder. Ember's smile begins to fade as she thinks then tells Wade, "It's going to take me some time to bring this up to my parents."
Wade exhales a deep breathe, "Do they not like me?"
"No, Wade it's not that. It's just they are very traditional."
Wade looks a bit sad, "I'm sorry I don't know much about Firish traditions."
Ember turns to Wade and places a hand on his cheek, "And it's my job to teach you. Please don't feel sorry."
"So is this a yes to moving in together, down the road?"
Ember laughs, "Yeah, it's a yes." Wade moves to give Ember and hug then a kiss on the lips.
Wade then reluctantly pulls away, "It's getting late. I'll wait for an air lyft with you to take you home."
"Okay." Ember says with a torn look on her face that he doesn't see. Home? Ember thinks. It's starting to look less and less like Firetown and more like anywhere where Wade is.
Author's Note: Ahh siblings, thought bubbles, parents, and hugs. Also kind of a shorter chapter. Update next week. :)

The Months in Between
CHAPTER 3
It's a new morning in Firetown. The streets are practically cleaned up. Crews are now working on fixing utilities. Wade is there back at it as a city inspector. Wearing his yellow shirt, pink tie, and a hard hat. He waves over a construction worker. "Come on there is somebody I would like you to meet."
From inside the Fireplace, Wade walks in, "Good morning Ember, Mr. and Mrs. Lumen."
"Hello Wade." Bernie says first.
Wade turns to Bernie "I want to introduce you to Element City's master welder. He's in need of interns to help with the flood gate repairs to keep the water out. And we both agreed Firetown is the place to recruit them. Could you help us get the word out? It's pays really well but it's hard work."
Bernie, "Of course Wade I know everybody in Firetown."
"Great he's right outside, come meet him."
All four of them step outside and are greeted by a large volcanic Earth element. The Lumens and Ember can't believe their eyes. A half Earth half Firish Element. He's taller then Wade and has fire in his eyes. Flames come out the top of his head. His hands and feet are glowing magma. When he speaks you can see fire burning in back of his throat.
Wade introduces them, "Everyone this is Vinny. Vinny, these are the Lumens, their Shop, the Fireplace, is a huge part of the Firetown community.
Vinny stretches out his hand to shake, "Nice to meet you, I have never been to Firetown before. I mainly work in the welding hub uptown."
Ember smiles and steps forward to shake his hand, "Nice to meet you too, my name is Ember, welcome to Firetown." Ember then turns to Wade smiling. He returns the smile knowing full well what meeting an Element like Vinny means to her.
Cinder wide eyed form a distance whispers to Flarrietta, "I didn't know Earth and Fire can mix."
Flarrietta laughs at Cinder, "Oh you and Bernie have living under the Shop too long." She whips out her phone and shows Cinder a picture. "This is my brother, Firish of course, and his wife is Earth and that's my little nephew. Isn't he the cutest magma Element?" Cinder smiles softly at the picture of the cute boy.
Back to Vinny, "Well Wade here tells me you guys might know of any Firish that can help weld. We need all the help we can get." Vinny points over to a canal. "You see how the canals are full of water again? Yeah, that is the only thing relieving water pressure right now. We get a big rain storm and there will be another huge flood." By this time many of the Firish in the neighborhood have gathered around Vinny listening to what he has to say. "We need to get those new flood doors welded shut so it will help direct the water around Firetown. Then it won't be in danger anymore. But the work is really dangerous. You'll be near water all day unfortunately."
Ember tells Vinny, "It's my fault the doors failed. The tempered glass didn't hold."
Wade runs up next to Ember refusing to let her take the blame, "Wait no it's not."
Vinny looks down at Ember, "That was your work?" Then starts to laugh. Ember looks embarrassed but Vinny goes on. "Oh kid, that worked for the water but the hinges on the door were too old and it cause a lot of added pressure. Sorry to laugh but I'm actually really impressed. Tempered glass is not easy to make by hand. Who else helped you?"
Ember surprised goes, "No one. Just me."
Vinny just stares at her for a minute in disbelief then tells her, "Oh you're hired! We desperately need that talent." Vinny yells out to crowd, "Anyone else interested?" A few Firish men step forward to speak to Vinny.
Wade and Bernie are side by side looking horrified. They both don't like the idea of Ember working a dangerous job.
Wade speaks to Ember first, "Whoa hold up, you don't have to do this."
"Wade's right Ember this sounds too dangerous." Bernie pleads.
Ember takes a second for herself and thinks. Her eyes darting back and forth. "I think I'm supposed to." She turns to Wade. "I feel really guilty that we fixed the door and Firetown flooded anyway." She starts to walk away from them over to a canal. "Vinny seem really impressed with my glass." She looks at her reflection in the water. "What if I can learn to do better?" She then turns back them. "I have to try."
Wade and Bernie are side by side again. Wade doesn't know how to argue with that. Bernie though has his head in his hands. "Why? Why does it have to be near water? Why?" Then Bernie realizes he's next to Wade, "Umm no offense."
Wade tells Bernie, "None taken."
Ember turns to walk over to Vinny, "Hey when do I start?"
Bernie turns to Wade and tells him a story, "Ay-yah, years ago before the city shut of the water the first time, I would catch Ember playing near the canals. Despite me telling her numerous times how dangerous that was. She was always so curious." Bernie breathes a heavy sigh.
Wade's phone rings and it's Gale, "Hi Gale, yeah I'm in Firetown..." and starts to walk off.
Ember meets back up with her dad, "I start tomorrow morning, I'll be off in the afternoons to help with the Shop repairs which is fine because I'm no stranger to hard work. I learned that from the best. I'm going to make this right Àshfá."
Bernie breaths out a heavy sigh but then smiles up at her, "Good daughter."
Wade cuts in with his hand over the phone, "Hey sorry but I get to get back to work soon."
Ember, "Oh wait." Then pulls Wade aside so it's just the two of them. Wade hung up his phone at this point. Wondering what Ember wants to talk to him about in private. Ember leans in, "You knew Elements could mix this whole time?"
"Actually I forgot about Vinny until yesterday and I have a Water buddy of mine who just proposed to his long time Earth girlfriend. I honestly didn't know about Fire and Water mixing but..." Wade looks over at Ember's hand and grabs it with his own. "...I just hoped it would work out and it did."
Ember looks at him lovingly, "Well looks like I'll be at city hall first thing tomorrow."
"And I'll be there with you." He gives Ember a hug and kiss telling her, "I love you. See you tomorrow."
"Love you too."
As Wade heads back to work he quickly tells Bernie, "Don't worry I'll keep an eye on her and try to keep her safe."
Bernie laughs, "Ha, good luck."
Ember walks up to her dad as they both watch Wade leave. Bernie says to Ember, "It's still weird that he's Water but the more I get to know him the more I keep forgetting that." Ember just smiles and thinks to herself it's another baby step.
It's early morning at City Hall. Ember is across the street looking up at the Earth building. She has her familiar hoodie on with a cross body purse. She is admiring City Hall's beautiful architecture. The first time she was here she was in too much of a hurry to notice. Wade is already there to greet Ember near the steps.
"Good morning! *yawn* Fancy meeting you here." Wade teases.
Ember walks up to him, "You're not going to fall into the floor grates again are you?"
"Gasp, oh no!" Wade trips in to the grate but then pops up again, "Psych."
Ember laughs at him as the walk up the stair to the front door, "You okay? You seem a little tired?"
Wade admits, "I haven't been getting much sleep but no way was I going to miss you on your first day." Ember looks a little worried but after seeing Wade in his usually upbeat mood she relaxes. As the couple walks in the building, Wade holds the door for her of course, and then they run into Fern. Fern still looks very much bald but is just starting to barely grow some bright green grass back. Wade spots him first. "Hey Fern how are ya?"
Fern stops and looks wide eyed at Ember. Ember notices this shrinks a bit as she awkwardly waves at him, "Hey Fern, sorry again about your office."
Fern relaxes and says in his monotone voice, "It needed some pruning anyway."
Ember and Wade both look at each other and snicker at the inside joke.
Gale and Vinny meet Ember and Wade in the hall. Gale speaks first, "Hey it's my favorite fireball and Wade. Glad to have you working with us. Wade meet me in conference room 212."
Vinny then goes, "Ember follow me."
Wade just remembered and tells Ember, "Hey stop by my place after work, my mom has some news for you."
"Okay see ya."
Vinny and Ember walk down the hall then he asks her, "Did you bring extra kindling like I told you?"
"Yeah my parents wouldn't let me leave without it or an umbrella like ever."
"Ha, sounds like my mother."
As they walk into the conference room there are other Firish men there much bigger then Ember. They all turn to look at her. She feels a bit intimidated as she takes a seat. Vinny walks up to the front of the room. Already standing up there are a few Air, Earth, and Water construction workers. Vinny then speaks. "All right everyone this your safety brief before we head to the job-site so pay attention. These lessons could keep you from having a tragic accident." Ember pulls out a pad and pen ready to take notes.
One of the Firish men speaks to another, "Pfft, it's just point and fuse metal together. How hard can this be?"
At the busy job-site now. We see other construction workers mixing cement and working up on scaffolding laying bricks. Centered is a massive and loud waterfall draining off into the canals. The site has Elements of all kinds working except Fire. The group of Firish men and Ember are all walking behind Vinny.
Vinny yells so everyone can hear, "This is the job-site, we'll have three rotation shifts to keep the job going 24/7. We already have a bunch of Earth men placing the metal that needs to be welding in place." Ember and the Firish men look around but don't see the metal Vinny is talking about. Vinny turns to them and then points up over his shoulder to the giant waterfall. Just as he does an Earth man pokes through the side of the waterfall and waves. The water is hitting his shoulder but since he is made of earth it doesn't phase him at all. Ember and the Firish men nervously look up at the waterfall as Vinny asks, "Who wants to go first?" The Firish men all back away but Ember not taking her eyes off the waterfall slowly steps forward. She then looks at Vinny concerned. Vinny smiles, "Don't worry kid, I saw you taking notes, you'll be fine. This way." Vinny then remembers something and turns back around, "Oh but first..." He points over to a cauldron holding a Blue Flame. "...for good measure."
Ember is surprise and relieved to see the Blue Flame. Se walks over, takes a log to do a silent prayer, then places the log in the fire. Just as the Blue Flame burns bright so does Ember's confidence. With enthusiasm she turns back toward Vinny, "Alright let's do this!"
Later on in the day we see Wade stops by the job site for lunch. He looks up at the giant waterfall and does a fear gasps. He can tell there are multiple Firish behind the raging waterfall because their light is glowing through it as they weld the metal underneath. He knows Ember is up there too. An Earth worker steps out from the side of the falls and with his back pushing the water away. Ember sluggishly steps out from the falls with Vinny behind her. "Great job so far Ember. You're a natural at this."
She responds with a tired, "Agh." And an "OW!" As some water hits her arm.
"It's all that extra humidity that is draining your fire. Remember to eat well and try to stay away from water for the rest of the day." Just as Vinny says that last part Ember spots Wade and runs up to him giving him a hug. Vinny sees this and says with a chuckle, "Well never mind on the last part."
Wade looks super concerned at Ember, "You okay?"
Ember looks tired, "Yeah this is just a lot more work then I thought. I'm not sure I brought enough food for my lunch."
Wade whips his bag around, "Well don't worry about that, I stopped by the Fireplace and got extra kol nuts for you for your first day. I was hoping we could have lunch together?" He end with his smile.
Ember grabs his cheek with one hand and on the other cheek places a kiss. Then with a smile rests her head on his chest and with a tired sigh, "Oh thank you, you're amazing." Wade is just frozen there holding the bag with a dorky blissful grin on his face.
The pair finds a place to sit and have lunch together. Ember tells Wade that Flarry found the old Fireplace sign and that they are putting it back up soon. He and Flarriette are buying the Shop so her dad can finally retire.
Wade says, "That's great! Hey don't forget to stop by. My mom is dying to tell you the news about the glass internship."
Ember laughs, "Don't worry I won't, and thank you for the extra kol nuts, this really helped."
Wade and Ember stand up but Wade goes, "You be careful." Then hugs her "Love you."
"Love you too."
Author's Note: Pruning and mixing elements XD. On a serious note sometimes we have to learn new skills in order to improve our natural ones. Like welding for glassmaking or drawing to writing. :) New chapter next week!  Also planning on posting art from this story in the next few weeks as well.

The Months in Between chapter 2
It's early morning at the Shop. Some of the regular customers, including Flarrietta and Flarry, are knocking at the door. Ember is the first one to greet them. "Uhh, you know we're not open right?"
Flarrietta responds with some sass, "We're fully aware of that but we want to know what you guys are planning on doing with the Shop?"
Another regular chimes in, "Yes, yes, we want to know when it will be open again, we need supplies." The rest of the crowd agrees.
Bernie steps out from behind Ember over hearing the conversation, "Everyone don't worry we are planning on reopening the Fireplace."
The regulars cheer but Ember looks down at her Àshfá all concerned, "Dad I really don't want you to work anymore."
Bernie turns to Ember, "I'm just going to help with the transition don't you worry." Bernie then turns to the crowd to ask loudly, "Who wants to buy the Fireplace! It's for sale once it's rebuilt!"
The regulars and Ember gasps then Flarriette and Flarry yell, "We will!"
Bernie invites them in to talk business. Then turns to his daughter, "Ember, organize the rest of the crowd to help with the clean up for the grand reopening."
Ember burning bright says, "You got it Àshfá!" Then she turns to the crowd. "Let's get to work everyone!"
It's almost the afternoon and the community has made quick work with the clean up with Ember's directing. Cinder and some Firish women are working on getting some food prepared for lunch in the now clean deli area behind the counter. The Fireplace is really a centralized hub for Firetown. Getting it up and running was essential and hard work is no stranger to the Firish. Bernie and Flarry work on moving the giant cauldron in it's right place. Bernie relights the big Blue Flame from the small lantern that Wade and Ember were able to keep safe from the flood. Just as the Blue Flame is burning bright another light source cuts in and catches Bernie's attention. It's Ember's beautiful glowing yellow light. She's looking at who just walked in the shop. It's Wade.
"Sorry I'm late, it was really hard getting an air lyft this morning." Wade looks around at all the work, "Wow this is looking really great."
Ember runs up to Wade and gives him a big hug. Resting her head on his chest. "I'm happy to see you."
Wade does a slight laugh and softly tells her while hugging her back, "I can tell."
Bernie looks at the pair as Cinder walks up to her husband and puts her arm around him. "Oh Bernie, Have you ever seen her burn that bright?" Bernie sadly admits, "No."
Just then the little Earth kid, Clod, bursts through the door. Unafraid if he was going to get kicked out. "EMBER MY QUEEN ARE YOU ALRIGHT!?!"
Everyone stops and turns to look at Clod. Ember and Wade are still hugging. Ember yells in surprise, "CLOD!"
Wade's confused, "my Queen?"
Clod looks over at Ember and Wade in an embrace. There is a bit of steam rising from the couple's chemistry syncing. Clod is slowly realizing what going on and says, "Heyyyy, I thought you told me Elements can't mix."
Ember still holding Wade looks to him and says, "Well I was wrong." Wade smiles at her.
Clod playing it cool looks at the ground and does a kick goes, "Awww well, you were too old for me anyways."
Ember turns a bit purple and yells, "WHAT!"
Everybody laughs including Wade. Flarriette walks up to Clod, "Hey kid, want to help rebuild this Shop?"
Clod gets excited, "My first job? Here? Heck yeah!"
"You're hired! I like your style."
"Thanks."
Ember puts her hand on her head and shakes it. Wade tires to hide a giggle. Ember then turns back to Wade, grabs his hand, and tells him, "Come on I want to teach you something."
Wade replies trying to hold back some laughter,  "Yes my Queen."
Ember returns all seriously, "Please don't call me that."
Wade laughs and shakes his head at how ridiculous that sounds.
Ember takes Wade up the the Blue Flame, "This Blue Flame has been in my family for generations, it's hold all our traditions. It's one of the few and very important things that my parents brought with them from Fire Land."
Wade goes, "Wow it's beautiful."
Ember grabs a log from underneath, breaks it in half with her fire, and hands a half to Wade. "Each day we think of what we're grateful for and humbly pray for something new."
Wade asks, "Does it work for Water?"
Ember tells him with a smile, "Only one way to find out."
"Do, you have to pray out loud?"
"You don't have to." Then she silently bows her head to the stick then tosses it in the fire. The Blue Flame sounds delighted to have another fresh log.
Wade does the same thing as Ember, "Okay here it goes." Wade thinks about how grateful he is to have Ember in his life and prays she keeps burning bright. As he opens his eyes he is careful to keep as much water with him as he can. He raises the stick up a little too high and it just drops in the fire. The Blue Flame flickers but it's not out. Wade freaks thinking he put it out though.
Ember reassure him, "It's okay, it's not out, that was just a little rough."
Wade taking a deep breathe out, "I was so worried my water was going to get in."
"We had a back up Blue Flame in the lantern just incase." Ember points over to her mom holding up the tiny Blue Flame.
Cinder then yells to the crowd, "Lunch time!"
As the day goes on the shop is almost cleaned up, ready for the big repairs. The sun is setting and most of the regulars have already left for the day. Ember yells out, "Thank you!" as they leave. She looks over to Wade and she sees him crouching down whispering something to her mother. They both giggle. Ember wonders what are they up to?
Bernie then asks, "Ember can you give me a hand in the basement?"
Ember, "K."
After a while Ember walks back upstairs to the shop floor and no Wade in site. Just her mom humming and sweeping the last remaining debris.
"Mom did Wade leave?" She asks.
Cinder goes, "Hmm? I don't know, he might be upstairs?" Then she goes back to sweeping and humming.
Ember senses suspicion but goes upstairs to check. Ember enters her bedroom, no Wade but then sees a glass of familiar blue water with a note on her night stand. She grabs the note and reads aloud, "Ember, Meet me up at the place where our relationship first took off like a hot air balloon, Love Wade." Then she realizes, "The roof."
Wade paces a bit up on the roof. The sun has set and you can see the bright lights of Element City twinkle. Wade has set up a picnic blanket by candle light with some of Ember's favorite Firish snacks. He hears Ember's foot steps and picks up some drinking glasses. Ember turns the corner and sees Wade giving that dorky grin he does.
"Surprise." He raises his shoulders up.
Ember giggles, "What's all this?"
"Well, it's been like two days since our last date."
Ember give him a sly look as she steps forward, "Uh huh."
"And I ask your mom what your favorite snacks and drinks are and figure we could use a break." He finishes shyly. Hoping this isn't too little for Ember.
Ember laughs, "This is great, just what we needed after a long day of work."
Wade smiles and puts his hand out offering her to sit first. Ember gives Wade a loving smile. They both lean up against a wall side by side. Wade pours Ember her favorite soda and she says, "Thank you. Hey when was our first date exactly?"
Wade thinks for a second, "I always thought it was the movie?"
"Yeah but you did get me in to the Windbreakers game."
Wade takes a bite of some fire-flakes, "Well you also chased me across the City. Does that count?"
Ember laughs, "Sure why not."
Wade then asks, "What about the future?"
"What about it?"
Wade bashfully, "You see yourself being married someday?"
Ember turns bright yellow and gives Wade a playful slap on the arm, "Is that what you and my mom where whispering about?"
Wade protests, "Hey, No I'm just asking."
Ember sighs and relaxes. Wade shrinks back down lowering his defenses. "Someday." She replies, "When I'm ready."
"Oh." He pats his hand on his knees nervously, "What about kids?"
Ember turns bright yellow again, "What is with you tonight?"
Wade in his defense and classically saying what he feels, "I just want to point out that your beautiful light is glowing yellow, not purple, and that means you're happy we're having this talk." Ember rolls her eyes at him unable to hide her smile. "Come on Ember, we're in our mid twenties, in love, it should be okay for us to have these conversations. It's not like I'm proposing right this second. Your parents seem interested in knowing and actually I'm curious too. Are you?"
Ember sighs again, "You're right, I am happy we're talking about this." She takes a deep breathe in and relaxes into Wade's side looking up at the stars. "I've always wonder what it would be like having another sibling around." She turns to Wade, "What is it like?"
"Pfft, awful at first. Growing as the middle child I felt like I never got enough attention." Wade then gets a little sad, "But, when my dad pasted having them there really help us all grieve. A big family is a pain sometimes it really helps to have them around when times are tough."
Ember feels guilty she brought up a painful memory, "I'm sorry Wade, I can't even imagine what it would be like if I lost my Àshfá that young."
Wade softly, "You teaching me Tìshók' has really helped me heal from that." He puts his arm around her and gives her a side hug. "Thank you."
Wade then suggests, "How about we talk more about the past?"
"Okay? What do you what to know?"
Wade half joking half serious, "Like if I'm in danger from some crazy ex Firish guys I should be concerned about."
Ember bursts out laughing, "My dad really scare you that much?" Once Ember catches her breathe from her laughing fit she continues, "I never really dated past middle and high school. My dad was always too harsh and scary with them as you can tell."
"Oh I can tell."
Ember laughs again, "Firish boys are so hot headed and my mom never smelled love on me so it never lasted more then just up to a Firish kiss, nothing ever serious."
Wade asks, "What's a Firish kiss?"
Ember turns yellow for like the millionth time today. She slowly turns to face Wade and can see that he's being serious. "What? No. You're joking?"
Wade laughs a bit but reassures her, "I'm serious I have no idea." Wade then smiles and dares to inch closer, "Can you show me?"
Ember's yellow glow fades as she thinks to herself what if they can't? It's such an intimate kiss. What if her fire does actually does burn him?
Wade sensing her discomfort backs off immediately. Just because they are in love doesn't mean he can push being physically so quickly. He puts his hands up, "Sorry, I didn't mean to make you uncomfortable." He's really worried he screwed up.
Ember snaps back to her senses and explains to Wade, "No, no it's okay I was thinking if my fire would hurt you."
Wade relaxes with a smile. Relieved he didn't mess up, "Here, give me your hand."
Ember holds out her hand palm up. Wade takes one of his hands and places it underneath hers, palm up as well, but they aren't touching yet. Wade takes his left hand and has his fingertips float above her palm. He then gentle flicks some of his water droplets on to her hand. Her hand sizzles but she doesn't pull away or feel pain. "Did that hurt?" He asks.
Ember stares at her hand in disbelief that she just saw water droplets hit her and it did not cause pain, it's actually tickled a little. "No, not at all."
Wade then takes both his hands together and completely engulfs Ember's hand. He slowly adds more pressure, more then he would like. Ember's light still strong as is passes through his hands. "How about now?"
"Just pressure from you squeezing but no pain from your water." She admits.
"And I don't feel like you're burning me at all, never had. I guess whatever we do it would be just like any other couple from the same Element." He releases his grip and then he pops up his head remembering something. "Wait! I just realize I can prove what I'm saying, tomorrow."
Ember looks up at him glowing yellow again having no clue where he is going with this. "Uhh, what?"
Wade laughs and winks at her, "Don't worry, not what you're thinking." Wade gets some thought bubbles but Ember doesn't notice.
Ember changes gears, trying to be clever as she jokes, "Okay Romeo, what about you? Any past relationships I should be terrified of?"
Wade gets serious all of a sudden. He can't make eye contact with Ember yet. He leans his back on the wall. Ember notices how serious his is being and watches him closely waiting for him to speak. Wade opens his mouth as first but then pauses to think about what he is going to say. Then he speaks. "Hey can we promise each other something? Especially now that are we know we love each other?"
Ember doesn't know where he's going with this but says, "Yeah of course."
Wade takes a deep breathe out, "I don't want to hold on to secrets and what I about to tell you is one of the biggest mistakes of my life." Ember nods encouraging him to continue. "I was 16, it was right after my dad died, I got drunk at some party, and apparently slept with an ex." Ember looks a bit surprised but stays quiet. "I can't remember anything about that night just when I came to I rushed out of the room terrified. Some guys saw me and started laughing. I booked it home and luckily I had my big brother Allen there to help me out. It's like the second hardest time I've ever cried, other then my dad passing. I'm sorry for telling you this but I didn't want to keep that from you moving forward in our relationship." Big tears are starting to form in Wades eyes. "It's not something I'm proud of at all."
Ember is slowly processing all that Wade has told her as he starts to cry. Her face softens as she puts her hands on Wade's face so he can look into her eyes. "Hey. I'm not going to hold something you did as a kid and grieving against you, Okay." She takes his head and hugs him close to her. "Thank you for being honest with me."
Wade hugs her back and says through his tears, "That really mean a lot to me Ember thank you." Wade surprisingly calms down quick. Probably something about getting a hug from your girlfriend that does that. "You know I really look up to my brother Allen and his wife Eddy. They have a great marriage. We should go on a double date with them sometime."
Ember likes the sound of that, "Sure that would be great." Ember then whispers to Wade, "So about that Firish kiss?"
Wade perks up almost too enthusiastically that it makes Ember giggle. "What do I need to do?"
Ember whispers, "Close your eyes." Wade does what he's told as Ember gently take ahold of the back of his head and leans on in. Wade follows Ember's lead on the kiss and it's as you'd expected it to be. A Firish kiss is a French kiss. It surprises Wade at first but then he boldly takes over the lead with his hand on Ember's cheek. His thought bubbles are going crazy but Ember thinks is just their chemistry. It's their first make out secession when all of a sudden soft steps up the stairs can be heard.
"Ember you up there?" Bernie yells from the bottom.
A now purple Ember has never jumped up so fast in her life. She runs to the top of the staircase to greet her dad before she catches him crashing the date Wade made for them. Poor Wade is left there sitting speechless, holding his breath. "Sorry just wanted to get some fresh air after a long day, ha ha, I'll be down soon."
Bernie just looks at her, "Okay just didn't know if you went out with Wat-* clears his throat* Wade or something." Then he turns to head back down the stairs.
Ember looks over at Wade. Wade blows out a long stream of steam out of his month. "You okay?"
"Oh we call that a wet kiss." Wade states with a dreamy laugh, "But that's the best one I've ever gotten, so steamy."
Ember happily freaks out and tosses a empty drink can at him, "I knew it!" Then goes to tackle him.
Wade puts his hands up, "Hey, I really didn't know! Come on no fair. But seriously let's head back down before I get into really trouble."
"Ha ha ha, yeah good idea."

The Months in Between chapter 1
An Elemental fan fic.
The laughter of Cinder's sense of smell declaration fills the Shop. Ember can't help but enjoy the new feeling of Wade hugging her so close as they laugh. The bellows of his deep laughter are so soothing and welcoming. She doesn't want it to end but reluctantly she turns to gives him a smile. Wade silently acknowledges her look and partially lets go of their embrace. Now excited to officially meet her folks.
"Mom, Dad, this is my boyfriend Wade Ripple." Ember tells them.
Wade gives Ember a smile similar to the one in the movie theater. This is the first time she has ever said that they were in a relationship despite all the obvious signs that they cared for each other. What else would you call the person you're in love with? Ember on the other hand looks nervously at her parents as their laughter fades.
Cinder is first, "Nice to meet you Wade."
Bernie says nothing and his face gets serious. He steps forward to square up with Wade. Ember is in between them unsure of what's about to happen. Wade is too unsure and lets go of Ember.
"Umm Àshfá?", Ember nervously asks. Her hands brought up to her face.
After what felt like an eternity Bernie speaks, "Thank you for saving my daughter." Then Bernie puts his hands together and does a small standing bow. This is not the Bà Ksô.
Wade is shocked and then slowly comes the water works but he tires to hold it together as he says, "No problem... sniff... anything for Ember." The last part Wade's voice get all high pitched.
Bernie lifts his head in confusion and slowly backs off as Wade bellows out tears. "Uhh you good?" Then Bernie turns to Ember concerned, "What's going on?"
Ember chuckles as she puts her hand on his shoulder and tells her dad, "It's a Water thing and thank you that really means a lot."
Just then a phone can be heard ringing from Wade. Wade pulls the cell phone out from his collar and sees it his mom calling.
"Sniff... sorry, sniff... it's my mom, I should probably let her know I'm okay. I left as soon as I realized Firetown was getting flooded."
Ember replies, "Yeah of course let her know we're all okay."
As Wade takes a step out of the shop. The regular Fire patrons who were helping with the search all quickly gather around Ember.
"What's it like touching Water?" "Did that kiss hurt?" "I've never seen so many colors from light."
Ember is taken back by surprise but Bernie steps in and rises his arms, "Okay, Okay, thank you for your help you can all go now." And shoos them away.
The regulars go, "Awww."
Flarrietta and Flarry laugh and then tell the Lumens, "Glad you all are okay and I knew something was going on with you and that food inspector from day one!"
Ember nervously laughs and asks, "Wait. Really?"
Bernie admits to Ember, "We all knew you were with someone and that you would tell us eventually." Ember is looks at her father in shock then Bernie continues. "What? Your mother couldn't stop talking about smelling it on you every time you went out. I'm just surprise he's Water."
Ember tells Bernie, "Yeah me too." Her face soften though thinking she wouldn't have it any other way.
Outside the shop Wade talks to his mom on the phone.
"Yeah Mom, I'm fine so is Ember and her Family. Their Shop is still standing but there is a lot of clean up to do. We uhh also made up and we kissed." Wade tells his mom bashfully then he notices some more damage outside. "Looks like the wetro is down and the canals still have water. I'll just call an air lyft later. I, uhh, want to spend time with my girlfriend." There's a pause as Wade listen to his mom over the phone. "Yess, I'll call Gale too for my job back I'm pretty sure she is busy right now, but since I'm here I'll see what more I can do to help. Alright love you too, bye."
Wade steps back in the shop. Ember runs up to him and puts her hand on his shoulder to ask, "Is everything okay?"
Wade looks down at his shoulder where Ember is touching him. It's such a small gesture but it's still new and exciting. Wade's head slightly bubbles as he thinks how awesome this is and yet is now terrified that there is this whole new set of boundaries he's got to learn. Fear? This is weird, why? Maybe it's because the last 24 hours has been one heck of a rollercoaster ride in his life and now that things have turned out amazing he's afraid that it will turn sour again. Wonder if Ember feels the same way? Taking his opposite hand and places on gently on top Ember's hand. They both hear the sizzle of their chemistry syncing. "I'm good." Wade's not lying and says, "I want to stay and help with the clean up."
Ember smiles and says, "Okay, well mom is checking up stairs, I'm checking the shop and my dad-" "WATER!!! AGH!!!" Bernie yells out, "-is in the basement.." Ember finishes saying. She is really embarrassed at her father's sudden outburst and she hopes Wade isn't offended.
Wade can read Ember's thoughts on this one and honestly they been very good at reading each other since the day they met. Wade wants to show this isn't a problem. "I'll help in the basement." Wade says and he walks over to the staircase. Ember from behind him can't help but look nervous.
Bernie is fuming from the top of the staircase. Wade comes around the corner and steps around him. "Hold up, let me see if I can find a way to drain it." Wade states as he enters the water. Bernie looks surprised. As Wade steps into the flooded basement his finds the familiar family photo floating by. He carefully picks it up and gently shakes off the excess water. "Oh, here you go." Wade carefully hands the picture to Bernie, "I'll see if I can save more." Wade then turns and goes underwater.
Bernie looks down smiling at the photo of them celebrating Ember's fifth Birthday. From behind Bernie is Ember going from nervous to relieved as she watched her Àshfá calm down.
From under water Wade knocks at the water regulator he saw his first time he was in this basement and shakes his head. Then he looks over and finds some debris blocking a flood drain. He puts his hand over in the area and can feel the water wanting to drain. Wade looks around and finds something to grab ahold of as he kicks the debris away from the drain. The water gushes towards the drain but Wade has a tight grip on a pipe so he won't drain away with it. Bernie from the top of the stair case looks happy. Once the water is all drained off Wade lets go of the pipe. He looks up at the pipe he burst out of the first time he met Ember and smiles softly.
Bernie runs down the stairs all excited to have this part of the Shop back. "You did it! Great job." Just then some water from the ceiling dripped onto Bernies head and he gets angry again. "OW!" Wade crouches down scared but then he stretches and reach up top to the pipes on the ceiling. Wade starts collection the excess water into his hands then drains them off in the now clear floor drain. And just like that Bernie's not mad anymore and they both start to laugh. "Looks like having some Water around isn't such a bad thing." Bernie says. Wades smiles and laughs taking the compliment. Ember from the top of the staircase just shakes her head. She is still really embarrassed by her dad's prejudice of Water but it's a start and Wade doesn't seem to mind. Wade looks back at Ember and smiles.
Cinder comes downstairs to the Shop, "The upstairs looks fine, nothing is damaged, and I have lunch ready. Come. I want to finally hear the story of how you two met." She tells Ember as she walks toward her.
Bernie overhears and turns to Wade. "Yeah how did you end up in a pipe?" Bernie asks.
"It's a long story." Wade responds.
Cut to upstairs. We're in the Lumen's kitchen. The Lumens and Wade sit around a small dinning room table. It's an small, intimate space. Bernie yells, "30 CITATIONS?!"
Ember is helping past food around and responds to her dad in agreement, "Yeah that's what I said."
Wade looks horrified but defends his reasoning, "To be fair those pipes in their condition where very dangerous for Fire. I'm surprised you didn't have like a thousand leaks everyday." Wade says. He looks down at the kol nuts in his bowl, carefully hides with his hand over, and cools it down with his water. Just a bit.
Both Ember and Bernie looked at each other nervously. "Uhh we did." Ember stated. She continues to talk as she walks around where Wade is sitting. It's a tight space so she puts a hand on Wade's shoulder as she passes so she doesn't trip. She goes and sits next time him. "But then you wanted to help me get clear of those fines so it worked out." Ember smiles up at Wade a bit bashfully.
Wade smiles back and puts his hand on top of hers on the table.
Cinder then asks, "Yeah but how did you fall in love?"
Bernie looks uncomfortable. "Ay-yah!Could you be more nosey?"
Cinder turns to her husband, "What? Don't you want to know more about you're future son-in-law?"
Ember nearly chokes on her drink as she turns bight yellow which is how she blushes. "Àshká! Really?"
Cinder yells and holds up her hands, "Ember your guys are a ten. What, you haven't talked about marriage yet?"
Bernie whispers to Cinder but everyone can hear it, "Can they get married or even have kids?"
Bernie isn't being mean about his question either. It is really out of curiosity. He and Cinder honestly don't know any better being from a land of only Fire and have never seen or heard of Elements mixing before. They believed they couldn't but just like their move across the world they too are willing to change their way of thinking, for Ember.
Wade blushes, feeling the thick tension in the room then remembers and says to Ember nervously, "Hey you should tell them about the glass internship."
Ember breaths a sigh of relief at the change of subject. "Yes it's what I want to do instead of running the Shop, of course after the repairs are done and all. But Àshfá will you retire the Shop?"
Bernie says, "Don't worry about the Shop right now, I want to hear more about my daughter's dream."
Ember smiles at her father. Wade lovely smiles at Ember as she talks about her dream of glassmaking.
After lunch the four get back to work cleaning the shop. Wade helps Ember bring boxes up to her room. As he does he keeps looking at the what looks like oil lamps hanging high above. Creating these beautiful spotted patterings across the ceiling walls. It's reminds him of Ember's beautiful light.
"You can put those over there Wade." Ember directs him. She turns to see him not paying attention but looking at the lamps. Ember smiles and grabs one off the ceiling. "I'll grab some oil and matches for you later to keep it lit but here."
Wade puts down the boxes, reaches out, and takes the lamp Ember is giving him. Memorized by it's beauty, "Whoa! You sure?"
Ember laughs at him, "Yes Wade, I have a million of them, it's the least I can do."
Wade looks at her and says, "You don't owe me anything Ember."
Wade's words hit hard. Ember realizes that she was holding on to a guilt that just suddenly flooded up to the surface. Ember's fire turns red and she start to shrink like she did on the beach. She can't make eye contact with Wade and looks down at her feet. She quietly speaks almost a whisper, "I.. At least owe you an apolo-"
She doesn't get to finish her words as Wade quickly realizing what was going on. He places the lamp down and gives Ember a hug. Ember's light returns as soon as she feels his embrace. It's like his touch sets her back on fire. Wade speaks, "Hey, hey I meant what I said back there about no regrets. You don't have to apologize for anything Ember."
Ember doesn't say anything but takes a shaky deep breathe in and hugs Wade back as she breaths out. Wade doesn't speak anymore, he doesn't need to, he just smiles and hugs her. After a moment Ember speaks, "You're still keeping the lamp," then Ember pulls out the glass vivisteria globe from her pocket. "And I'm keeping this."
Wade sees the vivisteria knowing that that was supposed to be his break up gift and says. "Deal."
They are still holding on to each other but Wade slowly inches his face closer but then Bernie yells from downstairs.
"You two heading back down?!"
Cinder yells at Bernie, "Give those kids their space."
Bernie talks back to Cinder, "What, I thought they were helping?"
Cinder yells back up the stairs, "You two take your time.. but not in wedding planning."
Bernie, "ê shútsh!"
Ember groans in annoyance and she lets go of Wade to step up to the doorway. She yells back "We'll be down in a minute." Ember turns back to Wade, "Sorry about them and before." Ember glows a little yellow at the last part.
Wade laughs and says, "It's fine, really, but I got a lot to learn about Firish culture, admittedly. Speaking of which I'm curious, is that how you sleep?" Wade points over to Ember's bed. It's basically a grill grate with coals underneath and a half burnt log for a pillow.
Ember is confuse and not getting it that it's different. "Uhh yeah why, oh wait, do you sleep on a water bed or something?"
Wade rubs the back of his head as he has thought bubbles and bashfully replies "Something..." "Let's go before your parents yell at us again."
Ember laughs and follows Wade back down stairs.
It's night. Ember is with Wade outside the Shop. An air Lyft is there to take Wade back home. We can see work trucks and crews out with bright lights fixing the streets.
Wade goes, "Glad the city is working nonstop to get Firetown back up and running again."
Ember replies, "Yeah." But you can hear the disappointment in her voice because Wade is leaving to go home.
Wade notices and replies, "Hey I'll be back tomorrow as soon as I can. After I talk with Gale plus my Mom has been really worried about me."
Ember looks up at Wade feeling a little guilty and replies, "Sorry."
Wade smiles at Ember and gives her a hug. He reaches his hand up to cup her face. As he touches her face he whispers in her ear, "I love you." Then gives her a soft kiss on the cheek. He pulls away slightly to see Ember glowing a bright yellow and her beautiful light reflecting all around. Wade gives a cheeky grin but then is caught off guard to Ember basically pouncing on his lips with a kiss which he gladly returns.
It's Ember's turn to pull away now. With her hand on his chest she looks up to him with a dreamy look on her face and says, "I love you too, see you tomorrow." Then she turns to walk back to the Shop.
Wade has the most dorky, love sick smile on his face. He sluggishly turns around towards the air Lyft kind of like he's drunk. As he walks towards it he does an excited dance like he did on their movie date.
The sound of the Shop door closes behind Ember. Her special light reflecting in the whole room. As she leans her back on the door she does a heavy, dreamy sigh. She pulls out the vivisteria globe from her pocket and plays with the light. But then she over hears her parents talk.
"I can't believe she choose Water!"
"Calm down Bernie, it is true love, and a perfect match. It's shouldn't matter what Element he is, they are both seem happy with it."
Ember tiptoes over to their door but stays out of sight.
Bernie replies, "I know I know but it's unheard of to have other Elements being together. What if it doesn't work out? It's just hard navigating an unknown this big. This is bigger then us leaving Fire Land."
Cinder tries to reassure him, "He's the nicest Water guy I ever met?"
Bernie, "He's the only nice Water any of us have ever met. Sigh, I sure hope Ember making the right choice."
Cinder puts a hand on his shoulder, "It's out of our hands, the readings are never wrong. You know that."
Ember takes a step back away from the door. Her parent don't catch her listening in. Ember doesn't know what to say. All she knows is this will take some time for everyone to get use to. As least they see that Wade is nice, that's a start.
Wade opens the door the apartment and yells, "I'm home!"
Brooke rushes to her son in blubbering ugly tears and gives him a big o' mom hug. "Oh Wade!! I was so worried! Wahahaha!! You must be exhausted with no sleep and you were out all day!!"
Wade laughs it off but now that she mentions it he is feeling really tired. "It was worth it Mom and I don't regret any of it. Ember was able to tell her parents about not wanting to take over the Shop which they supported and that she loves me back and we kissed... twice." Wade is off in la la land with how much he loved today. Best day of his life, so far.
Brooke then asks, "Do her parents like you?"
Wade immediately flashes back to Bernie yelling about water and Cinder about marriage and how complicated this is. Wade then says to his mom, "Yeahhh they are warming up to me."
Brooke goes, "Oh good. Lets have them over for dinner soon. I've always liked Ember. I so happy this is working out for you both. Now you got get some rest dear.
"Thanks Mom."
Wade walks into his room. He pulls out the oil lamp Ember gave him and turns off the rest of his lights. The oil lamp is the only light source. He places the lamp on his night stand. The photo strip and movie tickets from his date with Ember are on the night stand too as mementos. He lays on the bed staring up at the lights reflecting off the ceiling. He closes his eyes as thought bubbles appear yet again. His eyes close tighter.
Wade whisper to himself, "Ember..."
