I'm loving the use of technology for something so simple as trash cans. I hope this pilot program is not only successful but also cost effective so that the model can eventually spread to places around the world, including developing countries where waste management can often be a major issue. Good job LA :)

This week I saw a couple headlines about the Nigeria attacks on Facebook and was wondering why everyone wasn't posting about it when just a few days earlier, the Paris attacks occurred and were all over the news/social media (including the Golden Globes that I'm currently watching). I decided to google the Nigeria attack to learn about what exactly happened and this was the first article that came up. It only partially answered my question but still an Interesting perspective.

I'm a huge proponent of clean needle programs, especially in relation to its impact on reducing the spread of HIV. Treatment for drug addiction requires a long-term solution but in the meantime, programs like these are necessary for public health and safety purposes.

Interesting article on the advantages and disadvantages of giving cash versus food/clothing to the homeless. I hold the stereotype that most do in that homeless people would be more likely to buy drugs and alcohol than better their lives if given cash. However, i would imagine the amount of donation plays a key role. Giving a few bucks versus a couple hundred probably affects the likelihood of the person trying to improve their living situation. Nonetheless, the studies show interesting results that may definitely lead to a solution down the road.

When I found out about this ruling yesterday, my first thought was thank god I work for an employer that doesn't restrict my insurance and reproductive rights. And if for some reason my employer decided to follow Hobby Lobby's suit, I would just quit and work elsewhere. Then I realized that not all women have this luxury and the impact of this ruling is truly devastating. How are 5 men going to decide what women should or shouldn't do with their bodies?! Birth control, such as IUD's and Plan B, is not cheap and women shouldn't have to bear the burden of paying for it on their own. Setting aside the fact that birth control does not equal abortion, since when does it even matter what the religious beliefs of a for-profit organization are?! Are they trying to make money or convert their employees and customers? It's all so frustrating and if the ruling cannot be reversed, I can only hope that other companies aren't stupid enough to impose their beliefs on their employees.

As someone who is predisposed to diabetes, I certainly hope this drug has relatively few side effects and the device is successful in the market. The convenience would be amazing, especially for people that hate needles. Innovation in medical devices is rapidly growing and it can only mean positive things for our future. I can't wait for the results!

It feels great to be part of an exciting company that is ready to grow even further. As a jewelry merchandiser for Chloe and Isabel, I definitely feel like I play a role in spreading brand awareness and helping the company succeed. I can't wait for the company to have a global presence because its values and designs can be appreciated around the world. And if we do expand beyond jewelry, I personally hope the next step is watches!

Occasionally, Buzzfeed posts articles that are good for more than a quick laugh. These apps almost seem too good to be true. It's great to see that developers and innovators are able to combine social media and current trends with social awareness and change. I hope my phone has enough storage for all these :)

This seems like a such a simple yet great idea...not sure why it hadn't been thought of before. Although it's not close to a permanent solution, hopefully it can make some difference in the lives of the homeless. I can barely imagine being homeless in Santa Monica, let alone a place like Vancouver or Chicago, where the weather is not friendly.

I decided to check out this art show tonight and as an active online dater, I definitely found it entertaining. I can't say the artwork was breathtaking but it's always fun to see artists' interpretations of society and our dating culture.

Man this would have been amazing! Aereo is a perfect example of a startup that invested millions of dollars only to be crushed by regulations. It's unfortunate and this probably happens far more often than we hear. Hopefully one day there can be an affordable cable service that actually caters to today's generation. Until then, I'll stick to my illegal streams.

I don't credit McDonald's for a lot of things but this ad is pretty darn good! I also don't follow soccer/football regularly but the World Cup always makes it exciting. I can definitely say it's the most universal sport in the world, as even people from the most remote areas of the world love to play and watch. It's nice to feel a bond with people who otherwise seem so different from you.

Wow this is insane! How was this permitted? There's a lot of things that need to change within the prison system, and this is definitely one of them. Hopefully they'll have stricter enforcement to prevent this from happening in the future.

This is an interesting perspective. The article basically says that if we lower the corporate tax rate by ~10% to make it comparable to other foreign countries, large companies will be more likely to stay put in the US, thereby creating millions of local jobs. The lost tax revenue would be offset by the revenue earned from job growth. It's hard to say if it would actually work but the argument is worth a read.
The fact that corporate taxes currently account for only 10% of the government's revenue seems odd, but I'll leave that for another day...
