I hate doing this but I don't have a choice. Last week I went to fix my car. Then as I was leaving the shop, it froze on me, and left me trapped on a very busy street where I live. I called a tow truck company that forced me to pay before they would come and help, and they never showed. I'm in the process of disputing the payment with my bank, but in the meantime...yeah I'm broke and even should I win the dispute, it'll take a while for the money to come in. If anyone can spare anything-- I have a goal of $120, it would be very much appreciated 🥺

What are Black fans looking for in commissions?

I think this is another one of those things that artists may not have considered, so let's open the floor!

To my Black readers: if you are commissioning (or could commission) an art piece of a Black person specifically- maybe yourself, a friend, a cool character, an OC, etc.- I am asking you:

What things do you consider before making the choice to go with that artist?

(And I'll go first in the tags, just so no one feels pressured or alone)

To my nonBlack readers, esp my artists who want to expand their mentality, skill set, and maybe future clientele: I want you to LISTEN to understand. Listen to what Black fans are looking for in terms of care in the depictions of ourselves. Even if it gets uncomfortable, that's something you can challenge yourself on, and even overcome!

#reblogging again cause I can’t believe I forgot #but please let there be variety in how you draw black characters #yes full lips and flat noses are very common #but not everyone has those features #curvy body types are common #but not everyone is curvy #some of us have full lips some of us have thinner lips #some have flat noses some have hooked noses #some have neither and have a different nose type altogether #some are curvy some are tall and slender some are more boxy #my sisters and I are all monoracial #with the same mom and dad #yet even though we share features with each other we are not carbon copies #some of my sisters even have freckles #black people are not a monolith and it can feel very discouraging to see wildly inaccurate fanart of your favorite #or that you can’t get a commission of your OC #because the artist doesn’t bother drawing it accurately because the character(s) in question don’t fit into a single box #of what a black person looks like #so to summarize: #draw our most common features with respect yes #but also please expand your horizons on what black people can and do look like

#well firstly I check to see if they have BIPOC in their portfolio #to see if they have experience drawing them #consistency in how you draw black/poc characters vs white characters #some artists have a very abstract unique way of drawing characters regardless of race #but some artists #put a lot of love and care and detail into drawing white characters #whereas with BIPOC characters #it seems like artists either don’t put the effort in #or draw ‘inspiration’ from caricatures and stereotypes #now for me specifically #I’m looking at the nose and lips as those features are usually exaggerated in racist caricatures #are they drawn normally (re: consistent with the artist’s style)? #or are they cartoonishly over exaggerated and unflattering? #then of course there’s looking at how they draw hair and shade skin tones #how do they shade skin tones? #do they have a propensity for taking dark skinned characters and making them lighter because it’s ‘easier’? #do they put care into undertone and lighting #or just slap on a ‘brown’ color cause ‘good enough’? #and with hair #are you giving it attention and detail #at least enough to where it looks good? #or are you not even bothering because it’s too hard? #at the end of the day I look for how much effort goes into drawing poc characters #and whether it’s done with care #or whether it’s lazy/mean spirited/mocking #and I’ll end this on a tip: *research* and *practice* #there’s lots of resources out there that provide great information on how to accurately draw black characters #procreate brushes for hair and YouTube videos and tumblr essays and infographics on Pinterest #don’t be afraid to use them
