Light Fittings for Black+White+Colour
Here's my progress so far on the light fittings for the Black+White+Colour pop-up shop which opens on Thursday. I've been folding on the tube to work for the past few days which has been attracting a fair few funny looks! It's a great way to pass the time though, even if I do look like a bit of a crazy nut job.

Bompas & Parr Mercedes Drive-thru
On Friday night I went along to the Bompas & Parr Mercedes Drive-thru at Selfridges, an event being held as part of London Fashion Week. I’ve heard a lot about the pair and was really looking forward to attending one of their events. Anyone who thinks of building a giant green jelly moat on a rooftop has got to be worth checking out! The Mercedes Drive-thru is a fast food diner with a rather strange but suprisingly tasty menu. The cars are led into a marble tunnel by a group of rollerskating girls in sinister superhero style costumes, waving giant silver flags. Above the Drive-thru is a lighting installation designed by Jason Bruge studio. The best part of the event was the Big Merc burger which contained, “duck sausage patty lubed with damson ketchup, piled with celeriac remoulade, tomato slice vac-marinaded with eleven herbs and spices and melted smoked cheese.” Doesn’t exactly sound too appealing, especially when you find out it is served inside a sugary doughnut. Surprisingly though, it tasted really good! (Although I admit I did feel a tad pukey afterwards)
Bompas & Parr are designing cocktails for the Black + White + Colour launch party on Thursday night as part of the London Design Festival. I’ll be exhibiting a lighting installation there that will be on show from the 20th-23rd of September.
If you’d like to come along to the opening event you can find the details on facebook http://www.facebook.com/events/468625629825167/?ref=ts

RCA Limited Edition Collection for Esprit
On Thursday night I worked as a Tutor/Artist for London Drawing at a private event at the clothes store Esprit on Regent Street. The event marked the launch of 3 collections from RCA students Julia Mackenroth, Ryan Mercer and Rachael Hall. The guests were treated to a fashion show/performance and a series of six short artistic workshops that played on the idea of traditional games and craft. The concept was thought up by Anne Noble Partridge and David Price, the duo behind London Drawing. The overall concept for the event was themed around the illustrative work of Andy Rementer, an unexpectedely playful choice for Esprit. They seem to be doing a good job at reinventing and investing in their brand.
Andy Rementer's bold black and white illustrations added a playful element to the show and were used inventively within the lookbook in combination with photographs of the garments. The overall format and layout of the lookbook was really well done. A few photos of the book, along with some images courtesy of London Drawing, can be seen above. Overall, it was a fun night and I really enjoyed working with such a jolly team!

Dominic Wilcox / Variations on Normal
Last night I went along to Dominic Wilcox's exhibition opening at the KK Outlet to get my hands on his new book 'Variations on Normal' and check out his latest project, 'No Place Like Home.' The Dorothy inspired shoes he's designed have inbuilt GPS that can guide you to any location in the world. Simply click your heels together to get them started and follow the flashing lights to get to your destination. Quite handy if you live in a big city like London!
When I first heard that Dominic was designing shoes that would 'guide you home' I assumed they would physically force you to take steps in a particular direction. I had jolly images in mind of people charging around in a John Cleese like manner on their way home from work or drunken people being whisked home in the right direction. Although I was at first a little disappointed to discover this was not the case, I soon became excited as I began to wonder about the other potential uses of these fully functioning shoes besides 'guiding you home'. What if they were used for treasure hunts to lead friends to surprise locations? Or imagine an event/festival where the organiser gives each attendee a pair and takes them on a surprise tour to various locations around the city. What if parents could use them to keep track of children in busy public places? What I like most about the idea is that it combines technology with an everyday object, unlike other GPS devices, which tend to be quite robotic and inhuman. The shoes allow their wearer to playfully experience the world around them in a way that doesn't involve staring at a screen or listening to a monotone, automated voice.
The 'Variations on Normal' book contains a collection of Dominic's drawings that give a glimpse into his world of sponge weight lifting wristbands and apparatus for vertical sleeping. Each time I see his drawings they cheer me up and remind me that life doesn't always have to be the way it seems. As I walked around the exhibition people were chuckling away to themselves and smiling whilst viewing the work. Lets hope he continues to surprise us with his unique and humourous ideas of how the world should be.
Check out his exhibition at the KK Outlet by Hoxton Square until the 26th of September.

If you've got a very good reason for not visiting his exhibition, you can have a look at some of his lovely drawings on his blog instead. Or go to see him at Dezeen live during the London Design Festival in a couple of weeks.
