no like... kavik gets it!!! you made a mistake? well good thing you can keep trying to make it right, in this life and the next. you all need to read the yangchen novels pleaaaaseee they do such a beautiful exploration of what it means to be an avatar in an imperfect world. being the avatar is not about playing God. the avatar must remain attached to the world, must care deeply and love fiercely in a way that no divine, eternal being can. that's why the avatar is reborn again and again, in a human. mortal and tainted by the world we are all stuck in with each other, whether we like it or not. kavik's right: the choice is to keep trying, rather than to give up and pull away. there is no saving the world. there is only the work of keeping the world in balance, and this work never ends.

yangchen almost becomes immobilized by fear of failure—despite being the most powerful bender in the world, it seems almost as if no matter what she does, humanity will always beget its own suffering. that's why she considers abandoning her role altogether, before she makes the most important choice in these books: to believe in the possibility of good against immeasurable odds, to insist on caring about the world even through its messiness. yangchen refuses to disengage simply because she has caused harm and been harmed before, and that her every move carries the same risk. the point is to carry on with HOPE, despite the fact that we have and will always have the capacity to hurt one another. the other face of great love is, always, the risk of great pain. the avatar shows us how we might continue to live, to love and be loved, even amid the ruins of what we've done. even if we can't save the world this time, either.

arguing over which Avatar had the worst “failures” just shows that you do not understand the story whatsoever. the whole point of the Avatar being reborn over and over is that the work of keeping balance in the world is never done and the world needs different things at different times, and no matter what good you do there are unintended consequences which is WHY the Avatar always comes back. There is no end-all-be-all fix. I’m really so over this nonsense arguing over “who’s the worst Avatar.” every Avatar has to adapt to their time and every Avatar has successes and failures and every single Avatar leaves consequences for their successors! That’s the whole point!!!! Being the Avatar is a never-ending job because the world is always changing. What was right for one time won’t be right forever, THAT’S WHY THE AVATAR ALWAYS COMES BACK
