first comic i've made in years, i hope i can find the motivation to make even more after this! This is expanding even more on the idea from reddit user TytoT2000/A_A_Ironwood! My original post about this headcanon can be found here if you haven't seen it

while i do think this is an interesting and very good perspective, i think swanick is the bow that ties the events of nipton together.
the entire game up until this point is advising you to stay away from the legion, and you finally meet them in nipton. however what they do with the legion is much more interesting than making them some pure evil faction that comes in and just slaughters towns. they, mainly vulpes, are a pure evil faction who (again mainly vulpes) think before they slaughter and plan out a “lesson” from it all.
nipton’s “lesson” was a society of contempt corruption and exploitation. swanick is not just yelling as a gag or warning, he is the epitome of their lesson. he isn’t concerned with his gang, because he won. he won and now he gets to tell everyone that he won- the point of their mission, to spread word that the legion didnt just kill a town, they use the oxymoron to their own morales to spread the word that in some’s eyes, they did a service to destroy nipton, as horrible as it is. but again, as proved by nipton, people aren’t always concerned about the horrible circumstances.
frankly, i think this is fucking genius and extremely scary and intimidating. in their eyes, they did not just slaughter a town, thats against the legion’s rules. they purified it. there was purpose for their cause, because that’s what they want their goal to be. they are less concerned with wether people like them or not and more concerned that at the end of the day, they are here to make a statement and a legacy.
swanick is a bad person. swanick is concerned for himself and just himself. for this, does he deserve to die too? the answer is no, because no one deserved nipton… but they were a corrupt town full of corrupt people and many people did not like nipton or those that lived there. like i said, i like to assume we can all morally agree the legion is awful- but they are not awful without justification, and thats all they need to pick at your depraved side or fear them. its psychology for the most sickening actions and people, but at the same time you can’t deny they have a point, and in their eyes it is completely justified. to even consider the legion “justified” for a brief moment means that the nipton “lesson” did its job very, very effectively.
lets say swanick just warned you about the legion and told you to stay away. this would be a peculiar contrast to the powder gangers being the introductory bad guy, showing you that they are nothing in comparison to the predatory legion. however, they chose swanick to live for a reason. they chose him because choosing someone with the sense of feeling bad for his gang members wouldn’t justify their message. it wouldn’t show the mojave just how deprived nipton was, because then you would feel bad for nipton. you wouldn’t see it to the extent that the legion does- disgust, the same feeling you, as the player feel when you meet swanick.
for a brief moment you are on the same page as the monsters, wether you like it or not. its a trial as to how how much you are and in my eyes, the only proper way to introduce the legion.
Okay gonna go on a slight tangent here
Am I the only one who thinks Oliver Swanick kinda ruined Nipton?
Like you know Nipton is the player's first introduction to The Legion and everything is perfect
You got Necropolis playing in the background people strapped to telephone poles tire fires that go up to the sky heads on pikes it's a perfect introduction to show how ruthless The Legion is
And then it gets ruined by some asshole yelling about a lottery completely oblivious to his situation before hand
Like I think Swanick would have been perfect if he tried to get you to turn around and get away from The Legion rather than screaming about winning a lottery as if everyone in his gang wasn't brutally tortured enslaved and killed
I mean sure you know he could not care about you or his gang like Boxcars but at least have him be in a rush to get out of Nipton before Vulpes changes his mind
I dunno I think it would be interesting to have a member of a faction most players would start off as enemies with and perceived as an actual threat by both The NCR and the local settlements be actually fucking terrified of a much larger faction and a much bigger threat rather than screaming about a lottery which isn't even a valid lottery so he really didn't win anything just his own life
Going into Nipton for the first time in a new playthrough is such a chilling experience if you have a mod that removes Swanick from the game
I dunno I just think that Swanick was a bad choice because how am I supposed to be terrified of what The Legion did to the town of Nipton if I have this guy and his stupid haircut yelling about a lottery in my face?

Carolina Parakeets, #5. Getting into the tougher stuff now.
As I’ve said, I want to use this series to talk about ways in which the Carolina Parakeet was unique. Well, there’s one aspect of this species that I think stands out particularly in the context of avian extinction.
There’s a plant called the cocklebur. Common around the world, you’ve probably met it at least once or twice, its seedpods clinging to your socks after a walk through long grass, or to a pet’s fur. (Once, this happened to an engineer, resulting in the invention of Velcro.)
To most people, the cocklebur is a mere annoyance. To farmers, however, it is a scourge. The cocklebur, you see, is highly toxic. Even an animal as large as a cow or horse may be felled if it consumes enough of the plant. Unchecked by any extant natural predator (with the exception of a few insects), careful management is required to keep pastures clear and livestock safe. Though better equipped to avoid the stuff, birds, too, are susceptible to cocklebur poisoning.
All except one.
When John James Audubon created his portrait of the Carolina Parakeet, he chose to depict the birds among the bristling branches of a cocklebur plant—what better place to pose the parrots, than nestled within the arms of one of their favorite food sources, nibbling happily on its barbed seeds.
Audubon, along with early naturalist Mark Catesby who wrote the first scientific description of the parakeet, noted also that the flesh of the birds seemed to be fatally poisonous to cats, which would quickly die after having killed and eaten a parakeet.
It’s impossible to fully calculate the toll that our domestic felines have taken on the world’s birds. Invasive on every continent to which we’ve carried them, it’s estimated that cats kill a minimum of 2 billion birds per year just in North America. These losses appear again and again in the narratives of extinction, with cats factoring into the disappearance of at least 75 species of bird in the last 300 years.
The Carolina Parakeet was not one of them.
The title of this painting is ‘The Poison of the Cocklebur’. It is gouache on 18x24 watercolor paper.

Another comic! This time I had to choose a scene from a movie to recreate, so I went with the ending of the Guardians of Ga’hoole movie (an all time favorite)!
