seemingly , there's a sentient mass of yarn headed towards zavala's office : a floating , perfectly - new skein of titan - red yarn with slivers of gold that catch in the sunlight. unfortunately, it keeps smacking into different objects - before a crucible bot takes pity and gently nudges it through the thresh-hold and towards its desired destination. finally, the haunted skein crashes into the commander's desk - unceremoniously flopping atop a free space as a shell - less lumax rolls out of one end , making a sound akin to an oversized marble as they fall flat on their optic sensor.

the little light recovers quick, at least ----- their bare form promptly engulfed in a shell. specifically, her repainted generalist shell: covered in tiny, hand-painted constellations by their loving guardian . lumax wiggles her spokes & shuffles her plates until she's satisfied that her shell is in perfect order before immediately wiggling one in an excited wave to zavala, chipper as ever despite the absolute struggle it was to get here.

< hi commander ! um ... > the small ghost settles on top of their gift to rest , their arduous, semi-blind journey finally complete with a small half-turn of their shell before continuing, < i remember - not sure when , but i remember that you mentioned that you're a fan of knitting. ( or was it crocheting ? they're two different things, right? ) and i saw this yarn , & i thought of you, so i bought it and, well. > idly , tines drift away from center before lumax spins her shell to give more emphasis to their chipper < ta-da ! i think it'd look great as a scarf - oh, it'd look so nice with your armor! there's even little , tiiiiny strands of gold -- it looked so glittery in the sunlight! >

it doesn't take long for the ghost to get comfortable, slowly gliding over to rest near the commander's pauldron. < polaris and ikora are taking for-eeeeeeever with... well, whatever they're doing , > the ghost laments, their placid bob dipping a bit too low , < tea, i think - so i thought i'd come to check on you! whatcha up to , by the way? is it super cool and interesting ? i bet it is ! and i'd love to hear all about it ! < caaaaaaaaaayde !!! cayde cayde cayde cayde ----- ACK! > the ghost abruptly SLAMS into the back of the exo's cloak, iris deformed into a cartoony swirl as lumax drifts backwards, staggered. horrifically , she almost drops out of the sky entirely into a crate of what she can only assume to be maps - a close call as the bottom of her terrarium shell makes a soft plink against the edge. the smaller light's eye blinks back into focus as she drifts back up, a mischief-loaded giggle erupting from deep within her shell as she zips around the exo's head. < howdy ! so , i know you're suuuper busy with , yknow - > in lieu of spines, the leafy sprout attached to lumax's head sways, ' gesturing ' rather vaguely to whatever he's working on , < i dunno, vanguard stuff , but you gotta see this !!! >

lumax's eye flashes , before a projection of a video is promptly displayed for the hunter vanguard - and ... it's a video of her guardian ? well, more accurately , a video she took of her guardian zipping around on their new skimmer. eva levante's newest gift was being put to good use by a lot of guardians, & if the video's any indication by the way the nose catches on a slightly-too-high fence during a rail grind & flings the poor warlock out of frame, polaris is still , uh ... getting the hang of it. really, she thought it was impressive how fast her warlock went -- like the rapid acceleration of the cabal cannons on io, or , uh , a kid hitting one end of a seesaw too hard.

the video blurs as lumax zooms to polaris' location - in a tree , dizzy , with a cracked helmet & upside-down. their limbs are hilariously caught in what seems to be three separate branches, bantering and cackling with her ghost between sheepish appeals for assistance.

wait, why did she barge into the hangar ? < oh yeah , aaaaaaaand they're still stuck up there . i'm supposed to go get help , but i'm sure she's fine , > the ghost offers , comically unbothered for someone with a trapped guardian as her lower shutter pops upward, ever mischievous. < it's not like polaris is in immediate danger ! i just thought you might like the additional context! ( also, 'cause it's funny. ) >

so many new things to scan , too ! periodically, a bright , razor-thin plane of light bursts out from the ghost's singular, star-shaped "iris," harmlessly gliding over every new thing her eye caught before zipping around the ... spider ? man ? guy's head with a twirl of her shell. she falls into an almost - lazy orbit , slowly drifting around miguel's head before a spine is stuck out for an approximation of a handshake. another giggle bubbles from the paracausal robot , her lower eye shutter raising in an approximation of a smile.

< lumax , by the way ! i think you've already met my guardian - she's the, uh... ( what did you call her ? oh right --- ) the anomaly that can't stick to stuff ! and , uh - well , i know you're some sorta bigshot spider - guy , but i don't think i caught your name. > the camera - like shutters narrow that shining, strange iris into a squint - temporarily scanning her own databases. < oh. yeah , no - i definitely didn't . whoopsie ! got a bit excited about expanding the ol' database ! > / @iobartach

like i cannot stress how much hotaru and lumax are so inseparable that i consider them to be two halves of a whole. functionally you cannot have a guardian without their ghost, sure - a ghost is literally the prerequisite to BE a capital g Guardian, your connection to the light of the traveler , and the reason why guardians can't stay dead and are functionally immortals. and yes, the young wolf and little light ( the player character and ghost ) care for each other! there are also guardians and ghosts who hate each other . katabasis from presage comes to mind, specifically- his ghost kept rezzing him so he could die repeatedly. & to a lesser extent, the drifter and his ghost also do not get along, at all. but i'd argue that hotaru and lumax are closer than even the young wolf and little light are.

on this blog, hotaru and lumax will always be presented as two halves of the same "character" of the guardian. outside of that, you'll probably notice that lumax pops up even in non-destiny aus. she can be hotaru's human bestie, a spider that bites her & travels with her in earth-404, an A/I hotaru programs, a robot hotaru builds, or even just Hotaru's Cat. but the constant is that somehow, some way, hotaru and lumax always find each other, because they are two halves of a whole. and i think that's beautiful. you can't truly have hotaru without lumax, and you can't have lumax without hotaru. they are inseperable & they genuinely love each other & consider each other family in a way that transcends the ghost / guardian bond. hotaru protects lumax out of love and respect, and lumax would lay down her life for hotaru as much as they actively try to discourage her from doing so because hotaru fears the person she would become without her.

and on that note, fun fact: hotaru actually sleeps curled up around lumax! either that or lumax will nestle in her hair or hotaru will cradle her to their generator. it goes all the way back from hotaru's initial resurrection - the first thing lumax heard when she succeeded was hotaru's heartbeat and the whir from her generator, and the first thing she felt was being held by her guardian's hands. it also stems from the fact that hotaru and lumax are from the dark ages, a period in destiny lore thats ruled by violence and some Evil Ass Lightbearers called warlords. it's a survival instinct for hotaru to protect her smaller-than average ghost at all times as much as it is for comfort. lumax WILL cry if she's forcibly separated from her guardian and hotaru will do ANYTHING to get her ghost back, which has resulted in serious violence on hotaru's part. the quickest way to make an enemy of hotaru is to upset lumax, and the quickest way to get lumax to absolutely despise you is to upset hotaru. you cannot have one of them without the other. hotaru will not even consider being friends with you if you aren't at least civil or kind to her ghost.

just like you can't have lightning without thunder, you can't have hotaru without lumax. and i think that's neat.
