jason todd loved willis todd and willis todd loved jason todd. there is no proof during jason’s entire run as robin of willis having abused jason. jason’s reaction to finding out about his death and then jason’s mourning him at the beginning of ditf makes it clear willis was well loved.
catherine todd loved jason so dearly that he never questioned her being his mom. she didn’t have to do that, but she chose to. she gave him so much love that jason went searching for a stranger just because: if she’s also his mother, she must love him. it made so much sense to him because of catherine. even sheila could said it must’ve been jason’s love for catherine (who she calls his mother instead of herself) that made jason protect her until the end. catherine wasn’t actively “choosing” drugs over jason; she had an addiction and she was sick. she did the best she could, and evidently, that was enough for jason to have felt loved.

things you said thru ur teeth w jayroy pls ; ;
2. things you said through your teeth?
Okay, I literally woke up thinking about this so today is your day lol! So, have an AU that exploded into my brain because of the idea of connection feeling a lot like love just won't leave me alone.
*
"––ake! Fucking... damn it! Wake! Jaybird! Jaybird––"
Connection flares. A single pinprick of light buries itself in the endless white-noise of green. He knows he's a person again and that is where the horror lives.
"Jaybird, come on. I know you can hear me you stubborn––" "Roy," Jason grits. It's originally a question, but speaking around the lock jaw of his blank screen pushes his tone flat. He's compressed, zipped into the safety of his binary (he hid under the table he hid under the blanket he hid in the closet he's so good at tucking himself small and out of the way of dangerous creatures) when the green blips him out of his humanity and into...
"It feels like rage," he'd tried to explain, frowning at the scuffed Formica of the diner's counter. He'd paused over the plate of breakfast he'd been shoveling into his face. A chorus of spatulas on flat-top had carried from the kitchen through the small window to where they'd been sitting. The waitress had been paused, talking to a bearish man with a red ball-cap and boar-brush mustache hiding his top lip. The chrome napkin holder had been pocked with age, but the eggs were hot and the bacon crisp. He'd held on to the taste: memories and haptics never quite managed to get it right. It had grounded him. "Like blacking out." "Trust me," Roy had answered, swiveled toward him on a red capped stool in an easy sprawl. His spread knees had cupped Jason's bulk in the same absent fond way that he cupped a coffee mug. Roy had always been so open with his cravings. He'd tapped Jason with the inside of his knee before he'd smirked. "I'm familiar with blackouts."
Jason wishes he'd looked over, now. He wishes he'd taken a moment to etch the quirky openness of Roy's smile into him like a solid state. He wishes he'd carved the messy tangle of his sleepy red hair or the flat sprawl of his cinnamon colored freckles. He wishes he'd paid more attention to the exact shape of the cluster that cut Roy's bottom lip and the tilt of that one crooked tooth that pushed his top lip impish.
He'd know, then. He'd know if this was actually Roy.
"That's it," Roy whispers, harsh and husky. It matches the bruises and the blood. There's glass in his hair. It catches the light, but not as well as the little tangy bits of gold at the ends of Roy's eyelashes.
Jason blinks and the connection spreads. He feels Roy slip into him, slotting next to him with that same easy he nocks an arrow. It makes sense: Jason is a weapon to be aimed and loosed, after all.
Roy is red. Jason sheds the green.
"You coming back to me?" Roy asks. There's blood on his breath and Jason realizes his edges as Roy traces them for him, marking him off in the space inside his mind. Here, Jason thinks, and here and here and here and here.
When they find the ends of Jason's fingers together, Jason thinks: not here.
"They're in my hands."
"I'm aware," Roy snorts. He swallows and Jason feels it against his palm, the subtle dip and rise of his Adam's apple. "You going to let them keep those beautiful fingers, baby?"
"No." Again, the word barely edges past his teeth. Jason fights. He's always fighting. The haptics burn, tensing and snarling in the fibers of his sinew and the electric arc of his nerves.
Roy is under him, both pale hands curved around thick wrists. Jason feels Roy prickling, systematically spreading across his interior, lapping at the edges of the mental block with the inexorable steadiness of the tide. Together, they stretch the LaZaRuS membrane loose and then thin.
Dick//He's compromised. Roy\\I'll get through. Dick//I can't bury another friend. Roy\\Then, let's dig one up! ;)
"I'm in," Roy had breathed.
Then, Jason hadn't been able to do anything but tremble:
––it's disorienting to see the bulk of him from the outside and through the lens of roy's eyes but he's staring up at a handsome face with a dour mouth that matches the sulky tilt to strikingly light eyes framed by thick black lashes and he's seeing himself for the first time with nothing but admiration instead of disgust and it's so heartbreaking to be free of self loathing and only know that there is something wondrous about out of body and nothingness and roy looks at him like he's art and purpose and devotion and it's connection he wants to expand into instead of hide from he's losing himself to it and it's a sigh a kiss a press an opening it's––
Now, Jason let's Roy in, pliant and willing as Roy shoves their joined awareness back into his hands and hands Jason's body back to himself. Jason collapses, crumbling forward like the fall of a marble pillar.
Roy catches him.
"Welcome back," Roy breathes against his ear.
"Fuck, how bad?"
"Later, baby." Roy lingers in him; Jason feels the rawness of his throat, the white bleed ache of a broken rib, and the weight of himself. "Be here." Jason exhales.
Inside, he understands the echo of Roy means: with me.

I see a lot of love for Dexter Soy and Jorge Jimenez’s illustrating Red Hood, but I think we ought not to forget Jeremy Haun, who illustrated Lost Days and issue 25 of RHATO. He’s the guy who made this page that I see floating around so often:

His style is very distinctive and very fitting for young Jason, and Lord how intense the expressions are! The eyes! And Jason looks his age!

No hate towards Snyder but if you need to do an extended cut of 75% of your movies to "fix" them. That might be telling you something.

"Roy wouldn't like Jason! They have completely opposing ideologies! It's out of character for Roy!"
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Jason was a general menace that kidnapped Mia for one conversation in a pathetic attempt to convince her to abandon Ollie and partner with him instead. He kills criminals, but only criminals. His mindset as Red Hood is "I'm protecting civilians by killing criminals"
Jade is a mercenary, an assassin, someone who kills people for money regardless of whether or not they're a criminal and has no problem killing people without monetary incentive. Roy fell in love with her. The government told him to bring her in, since she's a mercenary, and he fell in love with her and didn't bring her in, indirectly allowing her to continue to kill people.
Out of character my ass.

Another thing that annoys me about “Cass, Steph and Damian died too” as a response to Jason just existing (besides that Jason doesn’t bring up his death to use against others nearly as much as people think he does), is that “they got over it, why can’t you?” and belittling him for not being a “perfect victim” is all in such bad taste, for obvious reasons. Then there’s the fact that none of those deaths are the same as Jason’s so the comparison doesn’t work even if we decided to judge characters on how well they fit the mold of a victim that doesn’t make a fuss.
Cass’ death is her being freed from her death wish. She’s not expecting revenge because she signed up for it. I don’t even know what to say about that because it’s all pretty clearly stated in the text.
Steph’s death was retconned into not being an actual Death death, first of all. Otherwise, we see her struggling to piece together her relationships in the aftermath of her return. Also, her death can’t be acknowledged too much because Bruce has been repeatedly absolved of all blame (that being pushed off to Leslie instead, originally) and speaking about how Bruce failed her isn’t something she’s allowed to do as a character who has to stay entirely on one side of the fight (because most characters don’t get to question Batman or believe he failed them, not without being framed as something less than morally sound). Jason gets to openly criticize Bruce but at the cost of never being one of the Bats like Steph is, and the inverse is true for Steph (irt pre-flashpoint).
Damian’s big death should be ignored because there’s literally not a way to have that storyline happen without being racist. We understand this, yes? And the rest don’t last longer than an issue. Let’s not pretend it’s comparable with Jason being dead and buried for over a decade in real time, actually dead and buried for 6 months in-universe, and believed dead for 3 years in-universe.

I feel like Bruce and Jason both have distorted expectations of the other post-DITF but almost in opposite directions. Bruce remembers Jason as the Robin he didn't train properly, the one whose arrogance and need to prove himself got the worst of him. Ultimately, he is remembered as Bruce's failure. Jason remembers Bruce and Batman as a safe place for him, a home, the best thing to happen to him.
So, Jason expects more from Bruce; he comes back, and he keeps holding out hope that Bruce will do what (Jason thinks) is right by Jason. But Bruce has spent years convincing himself that Jason wasn't ready for Robin and Jason was too violent and Jason didn't understand what it means to fight by Batman's side. He sees what Jason's doing now and he assumes Jason doesn't understand, that Jason still doesn't understand. Because that's easier than confronting the idea that Jason has always understood, and is still standing against him.
