from a cat's eye view
The sun sets behind the towers, blinding light turning to a dull pink, to a dusky purple, to a muted blue. A tram screeches to a stop, cars drive by; folks are commuting home, or going out for the night. The pulse of the city has slowed, but it never truly stops. In the newborn shadows of a deserted dingy alley, a cat yawns awake. It blinks slowly, its pupils contracting and dilating; it stretches, front paws extended, then shifts its weight forward, back legs straight as sticks. It sits, looks around calmly. The people passing quickly on the sidewalk in front of it pays it no mind.

Moonlight filters through the blinds, casting stark rays across the beaten earth floor of the abode. It is quiet, save for the soft snoring of the man laid down in the bed pushed against one of the walls.
The woman next to him isn't sleeping. Her eyes shine in the darkness as she stares up at the wooden beams of the ceiling; her hands are clenched tight against her chest. She glances at the man next to her. Her gaze, hard and confident at first, wavers a bit as she takes in how vulnerable he currently looks.
She had loved him, once. Had loved how free he'd made her feel, how special.
Her glinting eyes become tough as iron once again, and she quietly slips out of the marital bed, confident that her elven grace will conceal her from his imperfect human senses. A few steps bring her to a pair of rough linen pants that she puts on before slipping on her leather boots. She spares a look to the sleeping man, still peacefully asleep. She seems to hesitate once more, her fingers stopping just short of the leather armor she had been reaching for; but then she shakes her head, and carefully picks up the vest from its stand. The leather straps, well-maintained, move smoothly against the buckles as she puts in on.
And then, finally - the sword in its scabbard, resting on the ground next to the sleeping man. The woman tiptoes closer, watching out for any sign he might be waking up. Her fingers are shaking when she goes to grab the weapon, her jaw tense, her eyes attentive. The man sighs, and she freezes; but then he simply rolls over, and keeps snoring.
She lets out a strained wheeze, and her fist closes around the sword.
She exits her house for the last time by the window like a common thief, because the door's hinges squeal too hard, and she's unwilling to risk her freedom when she's so close to getting it back.
The woman emerges from the house bathed in moonlight, and the first few breaths she takes are frantic, like those of a newborn seeing the world for the first time. Her eyes are wet with tears, and she wipes them with the back of her hand before shaking her head.
This isn't the time to regret the past. This is the time to welcome the future.
The woman starts walking.
