another cold, unblinking stare fills the silence. her endgame is still undecided. perhaps she means to scare him away, or perhaps just make this as uncomfortable for the time being. he might grow on her. (unlikely.) she’s weighing her options. “i don’t like school,” ellie responds flatly. “do you?”

“i dropped out,” he shrugs, not the best example. six months left of schooling and he chose to run away instead. “but i’m lucky. musicians don’t need degrees or diplomas or anythin’. just skill. and time.” two things he has plenty of. “bet you’re sick of the ‘what do you wanna be when you grow up’ question.”

“…  rice.”   no,  she  shouldn’t  be  so  mean.   quickly  she  adds,   “i’m  kidding.”   fingers  absently  play  with  the  strings  of  her  apron.   now  that  she  thinks  about  it,  their  menu  is  not  very  vegetarian  or  vegan  friendly.   she’ll  have  to  work  on  that.   “pancit.   it’s  stir - fried  noodles  and  vegetables.   it’s  pretty  popular.”

for a brief moment, before her admission, he resigns himself to rice. quickly, he’s soothed, smiling back at her a little nervously, “i woulda ate it,” he admits in return, happier to be anonymous than full. “pancit,” he repeats, making sure he gets it right, “yeah—yeah, i’ll have that, thank you.”
